Fabric PerfromanceThe building fabric performance; that is, the extent to which a building’s walls, floors, roofand glazing limits heat loss, is the biggest single factor in providing an energy efficientdesign. An effective fabric reduces the energy required to heat the building, thereby cuttingthe amount of fuel required, this results in a reduction in the associated CO2 emissions -and crucially, a reduction in the energy costs, a very important factor at a time of spirallingprices. The three main target areas highlighted within the Building Regulation to improvefabric performance are:

• Fabric insulation levels• Limitation of thermal bridging• Limitation of uncontrolled air infiltrationUnder the 2007 Part L, it is no longer acceptable to ‘assume’ performances in these areas, the revision now demands evidence that the designed performance was achieved on site;the Energy Assessor will ask for the same documents when calculating the BER. Defaultperformance values, for accredited detailing, air permeability or U-values attained, will beused if evidence of performance in these areas is unavailable, this will inevitably result in ashortfall in the expected energy label for the design.

Claims of material performance used in the DEAP calculation must be substantiated whensubmitted to the SEI for verification of the BER Rating. Insulation U-value calculations andmaterial certification backed by Irish Agrèment is the assurance of performance required forthermal insulation. Xtratherm has achieved more Irish Agrèment Certificates than any othermanufacturer in Ireland. Xtratherm products are manufactured under Quality Assurance ENISO 9001, Environmental Systems Assurance EN ISO 14001 and EN ISO 18000.

Target U-values - Fabric Performance & RenewablesThe other factor that should be considered when deciding on the performance level of thebuilding fabric is the effectiveness of any renewable technologies that might be installed.Renewable technologies have a very important role to play as we strive towards the goal of‘Zero Carbon’ in new buildings, the target simply will not be attainable without theirinclusion. But it is imperative that when installed - they are installed into a building that is asenergy efficient as possible; giving the renewable technologies a chance of meeting thatmuch reduced energy demand.Cavity Wall

In a ceiling, typically fibre glass is placedbetween AND over the joists – this hidesthe top of the joist and may lead to healthand safety concerns when the roof spaceis being accessed. An Xtratherm solutionto covering the thermal bridge through thejoists is to place a layer of Xtratherm to theunderside of the joist before theplasterboard is fixed. This allows for theroof space to be accessed in a safemanner – leaving the top of the joistsexposed, allowing the roof space to beused for storage.

In a conventional ventilated roof a 50mm clearventilation gap should be maintained betweenthe insulation and the roofing felt. In certaininstances when a vapour permeable membraneis used instead of standard roofing felt, theventilation gap may be dispensed with (See Hybrid Roof Construction)

Placing a layer of Xtratherm to the underside ofthe rafter provides a 'Robust Detail' andsubstantially improves the U-values achieved.Taping the foil face of the Xtratherm withaluminum foil tape results in a very efficientvapour control layer.

Installation Guidelines

Using Xtratherm on sloped roof areas can provide the most efficient U-values with minimalintrusion into valuable living space. Warm Roof construction is a particularly effective way ofinsulating complex roofs. Insulating above and between the roof timbers ensures that thestructure is kept at, or near the internal environmental conditions, reducing thermal stress andcondensation risk.

Placing Xtratherm Thin-R between and/or below the rafter creates a Ventilated Roof. A continuous50mm ventilation space is required between the insulation and the roof tile underlay to allow anymoisture to be vented out of the construction. The high performance to thickness ratio ofXtratherm gives the maximum insulation values with minimal intrusion into the living area below.

The Hybrid Roof follows the same construction as the Vented Roof - but an approved VapourPermeable underlay is used above the rafter allowing the 50mm ventilation space to bedispensed with. A 25mm unvented void should be maintained; Agrément certification coveringthe membrane should be consulted.

Xtratherm Rafterloc Pitched Roof Insulation has a unique widthvariation feature offering a 20-30mm adjustment margin to ensurea tight fitting, high performance insulation locked between rafters.

Used in conjunction with a layer of Xtratherm XT/TL or XT/PR below the rafters, theRafterloc system provides a robust, cost effective solution to insulating sloped rafters tothe most efficient standards with minimal wastage and reduced fitting time.

Rafterloc Pitched Roof Board XT/RLOC

• Variable width feature• Simple to fit• Time saving• Reduced waste

Xtratherm Rafterloc features aslotted mechanism that allowsthe board to lock between therafters in pitched roofapplication.

Discrepancies in timber widths andspacings can result in excessive cuttingand loose fitting insulationwhen usingstandard sized boards; Rafterlocensures that a tight fit is achieved everytime, ensuring high performance robustdetailing.

Pitched RoofXtratherm Rafterloc boards are for use in pitched roof constructions where theinsulation follows the slope of the roof.

Because of Xtratherm's high thermal performance, a single layer of Xtratherm Rafterloc placed between therafters only, may achieve the U-value requirement; however, with the requirements for very low U-values, andthe fact that thermal bridging should be addressed, a two layer solution is generally required. A secondlayer of Xtratherm XT/PR Pitched Roof Board should be placed below the rafter to provide an 'AccreditedDetail'. Refer to product guides for ventilated roofs in Xtratherm XT/PR literature for guidance.

The Xtratherm Rafterloc features a slotted mechanism that allows the board to lock between the rafters inapplication. Discrepancies in timber widths and spacings can result in excessive cutting and loose fittinginsulation when using standard sized insulation board; Rafterloc ensures that a tight fit is achieved.

Rafterloc InstallationGuidelines

Single LayerFollowing completion of roof cladding, fixtimber battens to the inner face of rafters toprovide a ground for fixing the Rafterloc.Position battens at a depth sufficient to allowinsulation to sit flush with the underside ofthe rafters whilst maintaining the ventilationgap. The recommended 50mm airspacebetween the insulation and sarking felt maybe reduced to 25mm when used inconjunction with an approved permeableroof tile underlay. If required, the XtrathermRafterloc can be cut with a trimming knife tofit areas that are closer than the standardspacing. The board should be cut accuratelyto facilitate tight fitting. Care should be takento avoid thermal bridging at roof-walljunctions at eaves, gable walls and partywalls. Complete installation as described tovertical studding and ceiling collars. Asuitable vapour control layer should be fixedto the underside of the rafters at this stage.Finish with plasterboard.

Double Layer SystemInstallationA second layer of insulation should beadded beneath the rafters. XT/PR PitchedRoof Board should be butted tightly againstadjoining panels and temporarily fixed to theunderside of the rafter with large headedclout nails. A suitable vapour control layershould be provided. Finish with plasterboard.

Alternatively an additional layer may beadded in the form of Xtratherm Thin-RThermal Liner XT/TL, which allows acomposite panel of high performancePolyiso and plasterboard to be applied in asingle fixing operation.

Xtratherm Loft Walk-R is a laminate of high performance PIRinsulation with tough moisture resistant chipboard that buildsto allow safe access into insulated roof spaces whilstmaintaining very high insulation values, and complying withhealth and safety guidelines.

There is a growing awareness of the benefits of upgrading the energy efficiency of our homes by installing energyefficient measures. One of the easiest and most cost effective measures to take is to insulate the roof space, butconsideration must be given to safe access to that roof space once the upgrade has taken place. Building RegulationsPart L states -

Providing for access to tanks, services and fittings in the roof space."Because the depth of insulation will obscure the location of ceiling joists, provision should be made for access fromthe access hatch to the cold water tank and other fittings to which access for occasional maintenance and servicingmay be required.”

Application

Xtratherm Loft Walk-R has been developed to provideinsulated decking for lofts to allow for maintenanceaccess and storage in roof space areas.

The moisture resistant chipboard is tongued and groovedalong the long edge for easy jointing.

Boards should be laid transverse to the joists, (spanningminimum of 4 joists at 400mm centres). Pre-drill the Walk-R panels and secure with wood screws. Screwsshould penetrate joists by 30mm and be placed no closerthan 25mm from any panel corner.

Ensure that no electrical cables are damaged orcompressed between the Walk-R panels and the joists.Mark the top of the panels to indicate the positioning ofany services below the walkway. Do not over-tighten thescrews.

Ceiling joists are not designed to take a floor loading, loads applied should not be excessive. If loadingother than maintenance traffic or light storage isrequired an engineer should be consulted.

Laying - Metal DeckOn metal decks, Xtratherm FR-BG should be laid break bondedinto hot bitumen (max temperature 240°C) mopped or pouredover the vapour control layer. The board can also be mechanicallyfixed. Ensure all edges of the boards are supported.

Laying - Concrete DeckEnsure concrete decks are laid to provide correct falls to outletsand are clean, dry, without projections. Primer should be laid inaccordance with the manufacturer’s instructions. The vapourcontrol layer should be fully bonded to the deck and theXtratherm FR-BG should be laid into hot bitumen on the vapourcontrol layer in abreak bonded pattern. The boards can also bemechanically fixed.

Laying - Plywood DeckOn plywood decks, Xtratherm FR-BG should be fully bedded inhot bitumen over a continuous vapour control layer which hasbeen nailed or bonded to the deck. The boards can also bemechanically fixed, fixing heads should be sealed with bitumen.

FixingThe specification for fixing of Xtratherm roof boards will vary withthe location, roof height/width and topographical data, architectural specification should be consulted. Generally with1200x600 boards, a minimum of 4 fixings are adequate, locatedbetween 50mm and 150mm from all edges, additional fixings maybe placed along the centre line. Counter sunk washers, 5mm indiameter should be used with each fixing. However, BS6399 Part2 1995 should always be consulted. In two layer systems, alllayers should be fixed in accordance with the containedinstructions.

Xtratherm Close-R Xtratherm Close-R fully insulated cavity closers are a cost effecive solution for builders and specifiersfor the closing of cavities around window and door openings, preventing cold bridging, damppenetration, air infiltration and condensation. The Close-R range is used to close cavities and is suitedto all types of windows and doors and is available in sizes to fit cavity widths from 100mm - 150mm,with checked detail to suit brick or drylined specifications and flanged detail to suit block outer facings.(Flanged detailing requires precise construction tolerances.)

Building RegulationsThe recently revised Part L of Irish Building Regulations places great emphasison detailing at junctions. It has recognized the need to improve traditionaljunction performance as wall U-values improve.

Targets for junction thermal performance are set in the BRE Paper IP1/06 andasks that a value of 0.05 be achieved. In the past where a typical wall U-valuewas between 0.37 and 0.27, the 0.05 target was easily achieved using thetraditional 25mm strip at the reveal. However when pushing the wall U-values to‘A or B’ rated values the junctions actually fail IP1/06.

Xtratherm Close-R has been independently tested to exceed the new standards.

InstallationIf precise fitting of windows can not be guaranteed, a checked reveal using avertical DPC should be used.

Any jointing of Close-R should be facilitated within 150mm of the opening head.

Close-R should be extending by 50mm past the sill closer.

When sills are horned into the facing outer leaf, the reveal Close-R should betrimmed around the concrete sill and extend 50mm into the cavity.

Horizontal DPCs should be used with the sill as normal, with a lining of 40mmPolyiso placed at the back of the concrete sill.

Should clarification be required, contact Xtratherm Technical Support prior toinstallation.

It has been estimated that up to 30% of the heatloss in a well insulated house is through ‘Non Repeating Thermal Bridges’ atwall/floor junctions, corners, reveals, ceiling junctions heads and sills.

Appropriate detailing to ensure the ‘Continuity of insulation’ is now asked for by Part L, and this continuity can be satisfied byfollowing details printed by the DOE in their publication ‘Acceptable Details of Construction.’ Using these details will allow theBER assessor to ascribe a good score to the detailing section within DEAP with a Y-value of 0.08, following the EnhancedDetails using the Close-R system with insulated drylining may allow a Y-value of 0.04 to be used - a substantial improvement.

XT/TF Timber Frame BoardsBuilding Timber Frame construction is a fast, systematic method that can results inbuildings that perform well in Environmental terms and provide excellent EnergyPerformance ratings, if insulated to the highest standards.

Placing insulation between the timber framing studding has proven effective untilrecent changes to building regulations have asked for U-values better than 0.27 W/m2K. Improving the wall performance past this figure has proven difficult cultbecause of the amount of timber that bridges the insulation. The timber studs, walland foot plates, and noggins that cut through the insulation when it is placedbetween the studs must be taken at a default of 15% of the total wall area, but canbe higher in certain circumstances.

Because of the restriction that stud depth presents, the only pragmatic solution topushing timber frame wall performance toward 0.20 W/m2K is to actually insulate thethermal bridges (Timber studs) with either internal insulated lining or externally withan insulated sheathing board in the traditional cavity.

Installation GuidelinesBelow Floor Screed (Solid or Suspended)

Hylfoor Insulation can be used below the floor screed. Thesame procedure should be followed ensuring that the floorslab or beams onto which the insulation is being laid is level, ablinding of sand may be required.

The concrete floor over which the insulation is to be laidshould be left as long as possible to maximise drying out, inaccordance with BS8203: 1996 Section 3.1.2.

The minimum thickness of sand and cementscreed is 65mm for domestic construction and 75mm for mostother buildings. However, architectural specifications should beconsulted.

Below Floor Slab

Where Hyfloor Insulation is used below the floor slab, lay thehardcore in layers; min 150mm - max 225mm; each layershould be well compacted, with the surface blinded withquarry dust or sand to provide suitable surface for laying DPM.

A damp proof membrane e.g. 1200 gauge polythene or radonbarrier should be laid over blinding with joints taped to preventpassage of ground moisture, it should be carried up the walluntil it meets and seals with the DPC.
