FROM THE HEADMASTER

FINANCE

A reminder to all Parents/Guardians/Fee Payers:

Your first fee installment was due on Friday 8 March. If parents have not received a Statement either by Post or email to contact the Office immediately.

Mr Mark BrooksBusiness Manager

Dear Members of the Marist College North Shore Family,

This High Notes edition is the last one before our two week holiday break, beginning Monday 15 April and with the first day of Term 2 being Monday 29 April.

We are launching our Sacramental Program for 2013. Please see the details of this program later in this newsletter.

The students in the Marching Band who participated in the Easter Show parade spent a good deal of practice time preparing for this event. I thank these students and congratulate Mr Herbert in making the whole event go so well.

Last Friday evening, the Immersion Support Dinner took place. We were most pleased to have 150 people attend, including current parents and ex-students. Our Hospitality students did all the catering for Friday night’s event. The meal was very professionally prepared and presented. The immersion students and staff for 2013 were hosts for the evening and they did their job extremely well.

With three immersions occuring in 2013, we are aware that we need to work really hard to secure funds that will be donated to each of the communities we are visiting.

Our first student immersion to an indigenous community in the Northern Territory which is exciting both for the staff and the students. We will be visiting a Marist Community outside Kolkata for the third time and the Sala Lavalla School for disabled children outside of Phnom Penh, Cambodia.

If anyone reading this article and is keen to donate to this cause, please contact Mr Mark Brooks, the College Business Manager regarding the details as to how you can help.

We are currently preparing to interview families who are enrolling a Year 7 student for 2015. Current parents are again reminded that you must complete your forms immediately if you wish to be included in these interviews. Failure to do this will mean that other applicants will be accepted ahead of your son and your only way into the College will be via a waitlist for at least one year.

The main interview date is Saturday May 4th.

The College Athletics Carnival last Friday was a good day with students being very enthusiastic and supportive. The sunny break in the weather was a welcome and pleasant surprise.

Please note, the Parents and Friends Committee is seeking suitable donations for the Trivia Night, which is on Saturday 1 June. Please see the P&F Committee section within the newsletter for further information. As this is the one main fundraising venture for the P&F I ask that you consider what might be able to be donated to help make this evening a success.

Every blessing and all the very best for the holiday period.

FAITH FORMATIONThis week we continue our journey of Easter, yes that is right we are still on our Easter Journey. The celebration of the Easter Vigil is the beginning of the season of Easter. It is the beginning of a new season of grace and a time of joy and thanksgiving, for Easter is not one day or one solemnity — it is a fifty day celebration, and the fifty days from Easter Sunday to Pentecost Sunday together comprise what the General Instruction terms “the great Sunday”.

As we enter into this journey together, seasons of great joy and hope, I challenge us to remember the sacrifice that Christ has made for us. As we count down towards Pentecost, I ask you this question: How are you going to answer the call to be Christ’s Disciple? I would like to share with you the account of how Pope Francis chose his name and answered the call to lead our Church.

“Some people wanted to know why the Bishop

of Rome wished to be called Francis.

Some thought of Francis Xavier,

Francis De Sales, and also Francis of Assisi.

I will tell you the story. During the election, I was seated next to the Archbishop

Emeritus of São Paolo and Prefect Emeritus of the Congregation

for the Clergy, Cardinal Claudio Hummes - a good friend, a good friend!

When things were looking dangerous, he encouraged me.

And when the votes reached two thirds, there was the usual applause, because

the Pope had been elected. And he gave me a hug and a kiss, and said: ‘Don’t forget the poor!’

And those words came to me: the poor, the poor.

Then, right away, thinking of the poor, I thought of

Francis of Assisi. Then I thought of all the wars,

as the votes were still being counted, till the end.

Francis is also the man of peace. That is how the name

came into my heart: Francis of Assisi. For me, he is the man of poverty,

the man of peace, the man who loves and protects creation;

these days we do not have a very good relationship

with creation, do we? He is the man who gives us this spirit of peace,

the poor man … How I would like a Church

which is poor and for the poor!”

Pope Francis has set us a clear challenge – to live out our faith in discipleship and love.

I would also like to take this opportunity to thank Marian McKinley for all of the wonderful work she has done at the College. This was once again illustrated on Holy Thursday when we had a beautiful Easter liturgy and Stations of the Cross.

I wish her well with the birth of little McKinley and we look forward to having her back next year.

FAITH FORMATIONSACRAMENTAL PROGRAM

The Marist College North Shore Sacramental Program is back in 2013! The program gives students the opportunity to explore their faith through receiving the sacraments of Baptism, Eucharist and Confirmation. This is an invitation for students in Year Seven to Twelve to go search, question, discover, and understand more deeply the importance of the sacraments, their relevance today and to live a life of faith.

The school based program is designed to allow boys at various stages of their spiritual and life journey to learn and embrace the beliefs, teachings and practices of the Catholic Church through a process of Christian initiation.

Some boys will seek to look at receiving all three sacraments while others who have already received Baptism, will seek to complete

the remaining two sacraments of Eucharist and Confirmation. The program will build on their current Religious Education and facilitate deeper reflection on their relationship with God over a number of weekly meetings in Terms 2 and 3.

The program will culminate in a Celebration of Christian Initiation – a special Mass during which the boys will be formally and sacramentally welcomed into the Catholic Church. This will be an opportunity for the boys to celebrate with their parents and friends the gift of God’s Grace that they receive through the Sacraments.

Last year, the College welcomed twelve boys into the Catholic community. Ethan Grenot described it as “a really good way of actively being part of the Catholic Church and the wider world.” To hear more of their testimonies, click the YouTube link: http://youtu.be/2Az_a-zYwec or scan the QR code to the right.

Students who participate in the program are not required to receive all or any of the sacraments. The program is designed to facilitate a period of discernment through which they can then make their decision on becoming a Catholic or furthering their initiation into the Church. This can be decided in 2013 or in the future.

If you are interested in the Sacramental Program, please contact Mr Dela Cruz though the College office by Friday 3rd May 2013.

TEACHING & LEARNINGINTERIM REPORTS

Parents of students in Years Seven to Eleven Should have received their interim reports in the mail by now. Please contact Mrs Joyce Kelly at the school if it has not arrived before the end of term. The interim report does not contain any formal assessment marks but is intended to give parents some simple feedback regarding how their son has started the year in a particular subject. It is important that parents and students take note of the effort grades and try to address any issues earlier rather than later. If parents have any concerns about a particular report, please do not hesitate to telephone the relevant teacher for some extra feedback and guidance.

YEAR TWELVE

A note has also been sent home to the parents of Year Twelve students outlining some of the initiatives the College is introducing this year in order to “raise the bar” for all of our students. Mr Forrester and I met with Year Twelve to discuss some of these initiatives and other concerns we have regarding consistent effort in regards to student work. It is our hope that all Year Twelve students engage in the seminars and study sessions that staff are so generously offering to run.

ASSESSMENT PROCEDURES

Just a reminder that parents of students in Years Nine to Twelve are required to contact me if their son is absent when an assessment task is due. A Doctor’s Certificate must be presented to me the very first day the student returns after being absent.

The detailed assessment policies and procedures can be found in the relevant Assessment Booklet which was given out earlier in the year. An online version can be found on the School website under the “Learning@Marist” link.

CREATIVE ARTSSENIOR MARCHING BAND PERFORMANCE

ROYAL EASTER SHOW – MONDAY 25 MARCH

Congratulations to the fifty musicians who represented Marist College North Shore, marching in the Royal Easter Show Grand Parade on Monday 25th March.

We led two parades accompanying vintage cars, fire engines, costume characters and dancers around the showground. The band sounded great and looked polished in military marching formation including a front row of eight trombones leading the procession!

The boys had some free time to explore the Easter Show highlights, including rides and the confectionary frenzy also known as the show bag pavilion.

Special thanks to our wonderful percussion section led by our senior drummers, Harry Lambrou, and Daniel Cavalcanti-Martins for the funky marching drum cadences they wrote to perform during the parade.

Our next Marching Band event will be ANZAC Day on Thursday 25th April, where we participate in the Sydney City ANZAC Parade. More details will be sent to students and family over the coming weeks.

Thank you to all band members for your preparation and great work you have all put in for these events.

Mr Rod HerbertBand Director

The Easter Show was a great reward for the musicians. Marching at the Easter show was very fun and definitely worth waking up early for rehearsal, as well as all the sweat spilt by the band on parade.

At the Easter Show we enjoyed going on rides, watching some unusual sports and walking through the different pavilions, as well as spending money on showbags. And what’s more, the music was great!

It is no small thing giving up one’s blood to help someone else! As has always been the case, our young men behaved impeccably. The nurses praised them on how well they represented the College and that they would love to see them return as often as possible.

In fact, several of these students have decided that they will continue to give blood in the future and they encourage others to do so too.

My thanks and appreciation goes to these wonderful young men who have gone out of their way to help the community through such a selfless act.

Mrs Susan TurnerBlood Donation Coordinator

On Friday 22 March, a selection of volunteers from Year 12 travelled to the Red Cross Blood Donation Centre in Chatswood for their annual donation program. After a small hitch with the Red Cross van,

the donations went ahead as planned and the students were able to make twenty-seven donations in the course of the day.

This enabled them to help eighty-one people in the community who benefited from whole blood, plasma and other invaluable components such as clotting factors. These gentlemen really have made a huge difference to other people’s lives through their courage and generosity.
