Cheshbon Hanefesh Writing PromptsAdapted from Merle FeldThis holy season asks us to examine ourselves, to ask how it is that we can recenter and refocus in the New Year. As you prepare to join with the Shearith community in prayer, take a few quiet moments to sit, reflect, and write. Feel free to return to this page as many times as you need.

Recall a moment this year when you felt great joy. How did you celebrate that joy, and how do you continue to reap inspiration from it?

To whom do you feel grateful this year? How might you let them know?

Think about the relationship in your life that is in most need of repair. What would it take to mend it? What’s stopping you from doing so?

Recall a moment from this past year when you felt proud of yourself, when the best version of you came out. How can you bring that version of yourself into more of your life?

We miss you.

We love you.

We’ll see you again soon. (But not soon enough!)

And, in the meantime, we hope the tools in this box will help us to feel as close in spirit as we wish we could all be in person.

L’shana tovah tikateivu. May we all be inscribed for a year of health, happiness, and, God willing, reunion.

The Klei Kodesh, Staff & Leadership of Shearith Israel

We know. Shul on a screen is not what you had in mind for this most sacred time of year. So, we’ve put together a collection of gifts and ritual items as way to break through the “fourth wall” of this year’s community experience of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. And also, because— we miss you! We hope each of these items helps transform your home into a mikdash me’at, a smaller version of our dear sanctuaries which hold such a special place in all our hearts. Apples and HoneyGo ahead. Drizzle some extra honey on those apple slices, you’ve earned it! You’ll find the blessings for this customary Rosh Hashanah treat in the ritual section of this booklet. Mystery GiftDon’t open the small ribbon-wrapped box—not yet! We’re saving the unwrapping of this small token of affection,

(which we’ll use throughout High Holy Days Services) for the sermon on Erev Rosh Hashanah. Join us on Friday, September 18 at 6 pm to find out what’s inside (and what it’s for!) Tashlich-in-a-JarWanna stay away from the crowds at White Rock Lake or Frankford Park? Save your extra bread crumbs for your next breaded chicken recipe and try this ingenious way of performing this yearly ritual casting-away of sins. Inside your Tashlich mason jar, you’ll find a few slips of paper and a pencil. Spend a few minutes thinking about the things you want to leave behind you as you start 5781. Write each down on one of the sheets, then fill the mason jar with water, drop in your “sins,” and watch them fade out of sight and mind.

Guide to Your High Holy Days Box

Yizkor StonesHave this bag of stones by your side as we turn to the pages of Yizkor and remember

the loved ones who filled our lives with blessing and inspired us to live by the

values and lessons they left behind. Taken from a beloved annual ritual used in the Family Service, we’ll use the stones to pay tribute to their memory. Havdalah Candle, Spices, and Glow SticksJoin us on Zoom after Ma’ariv concludes the end of Ne’ilah (approximately 7:50 pm on September 28,) light up the intertwined wicks of the candle, and watch the glow of a new year’s light reflected in the faces of your Shearith family members across the metroplex and beyond. And who says glow sticks are only for kids? Wave them in the air as we sway side to side to the familiar melodies of Havdalah.

“We’ve had so much fun putting these Boxes together for you! Each item was carefully curated to help you feel both emotionally connected and spiritually adventurous during this holy season. Which is your favorite?” Rabbi Shira Wallach

Blessing LoopWe are particularly excited about this beautiful ritual object, designed by our good friend and immensely talented artist, Eli Kaplan-Wildmann, in partnership with PJ Library. The Blessing Loop shows four different images of parents blessing children, set against poignant imagery of creation, cosmos, community, and celebration. Have your Blessing Loop handy before joining our Family Gathering Moment on the first day of Rosh Hashanah at 9:45 am. We hope you will also integrate the Blessing Loop into your weekly Shabbat ritual! Read more about Eli’s inspiration on the card in the Blessing Loop pocket.

Ark Coloring PanelsThe big question of the season (or one of them): How do we turn our home into a place that feels like shul? We’ll address this in more detail a bit later in the booklet, but one of the special talents that our remarkable children have is to use their creativity to bring vibrancy to our world. In that vein, we’ve created

panels that your kids can color or paint, peel off, and affix to the top “roof” panels of the box. Then, stand the box on its side and… you have an Ark!

Stuffed TorahAfter you make your Ark, you’ll need to put a Torah inside. If you have others at home, or other holy and special objects, feel free to add them. Make sure to set up your Ark with your Torah before watching our Family Services videos, especially Rosh Hashanah #2 and Yom Kippur #2.

Family and/or Youth MahzorYour Mahzorim are very special this year, created particularly for the High Holy Days experience at home. Use them when joining in with the Family and Youth Services Videos, of course, and also take time to peruse them at your own pace.

Bag of FeathersBefore watching the Family Service Yom Kippur Video #2 on our Sanctuary Portal, make sure you have these feathers handy.

FAMILY BOXES: Items For Young Ones!

Page 7: High Holy Days 5781 · We are particularly excited about this beautiful ritual object, designed by our good friend and immensely talented artist, Eli Kaplan-Wildmann, in partnership

Kids aren’t always ready to sit and participate, so you’ll find a collection of pre-recorded engaging On Demand Services for families and youth of all ages in our Sanctuary Portal Video Library. Make sure to have everything ready so kids can take part fully. Then hang out with your kids and enjoy!

Our Blessing Board Our popular tradition of sharing reflections from the past year via Post-It notes continues with our virtual Blessing Board to help us share the milestones and experiences from 5780, and provide an opportunity to share wishes and hopes for the coming year. We encourage you to help build this poignant collection of memories by adding your photographs, videos, and prayers at shearith.live/blessingIf you need any help, Rabbi Roffman made an easy-to-follow video you can find in our Portal Video Library.

Lobby Video Chat It would not be the High Holy Days without greeting our loved ones and friends. This year we will use a web app called remo.co that allows you to visit in groups of up to eight people and easily jump from group to group, so you can recreate the experience of chatting in our sanctuary lobbies. You have already received an email with sign up instructions. Be sure to sign up prior to the start of the High Holy Days.

Lobby Chats open one hour prior to the start of each service and remain open during the service, if you need a quick break.

On Demand Video LibraryEven with our shortened services, we know two hours is a long time to watch our livestream! If you need to mix it up a bit, head over to our Video Library. You’ll find a terrific collection of short videos featuring our Klei Kodesh reflecting on themes and questions about this holy season. You’ll also find Rabbi Wallach and Avi Mitzner’s pre-recorded alternative service, ReNew. If you’ve never had an opportunity to check it out, you’ll enjoy the beautiful, meditative singing and uplifting, thoughtful teaching. Finally, you’ll find all our exclusive Family and Youth Services, in the Portal Library.

We Can Help Help is available through Chat on the Portal or visit shearith.org/tech for instructions and tips.

1. Don’t wait until the last minute to choose your prayer space! Spend a few moments of individual contemplation/family discussion to determine the best spot in your home. Take into account things like: clutter and distractions, beautiful art and natural light, and proximity to your internet router.

2. Once you’ve chosen your place, decide how you’ll set it up. Where will everyone sit?

3. Transform your computer desk so that it looks markedly different from your work space. Move away your piles of paper and cups and mismatched pens. Instead, drape your table with a white cloth and put out vases of fresh flowers.

4. Arrange meaningful objects to elevate your space. On Rosh Hashanah, set out your candlesticks and kiddush cup, apples, honey, and special fruits. On Yom Kippur, gather cherished family photos and mementos. If you have a Shofar, set it out.

5. If possible, move back from the computer so that you can watch and participate rather than manipulate. Consider connecting your computer to a TV screen so that it feels less like a work device. Disable email and text alerts so that you can be fully present.

6. Prepare yourself physically: go for a mind-clearing walk around the block or take a shower. Dress in special and festive clothes; wear your kittel, kippah, and tallit.

7. Finally, set out your mahzor, your special prayer book for the High Holy Day season. If you didn’t check one out when you picked up your Box, you can access it online on our Portal.

When Shabbat comes in, we light

two simple candles;

yet when Shabbat is

leaving, we light a larger flame of

intertwined lights. The Havdalah candle represents the primordial

first light of creation; new beginnings, a new commitment.

After saying the blessing, we make use of the flame by holding our

hand near the flame and looking at its reflection on our fingernails.

We hope to extend the light of Shabbat into our week.

SISterhood is proud to support the important work of Shearith Israel. This New Year, we are honored to offer you the havdalah candleincluded in your very special High Holy Day Box. We wish you a yearbursting with extra sweetness, in good health, surrounded by thelove of family, friends, and community.

Barukh ata Adonai Eloheinu, melekh ha'olam, bo're m'orei ha'esh.

Blessed are You, LORD our God, King of the universe,

Who creates the lights of the fire.
