India Fruit juices, cereals, cereal-based foods, bakery have fortification standards Fruit juices, cereals, cereal-based foods and bakery products will soon have standards for fortification. Safe foods will have a logo of declaration set by national food regulator, Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI), CII National Committee on Nutrition chairperson Vinita Bali told ET. The committee, which includes large packaged food companies like Kraft Heinz, Britannia, ITC, Kellogg, Cargill and GSK Consumer, is working with FSSAI to set the standards, Bali, formerly managing director at biscuits maker Britannia, said. ―We are looking to strengthen regulatory monitoring to ensure quality and safety of fortified foods and promote a national logo for easy recognition of safe foods,‖ she said. Bali added that standards are being set for consumer staples including salt, oil and milk. ―We intend to create an enabling environment

by issuing fortification standards for multiple foods.‖ The logo for easy recognition of ‗safe‘ foods could be yellow, similar to the existing red and green logos to identify vegetarian and non-vegetarian packaged foods. Full

article India can make cheap and quality medicines available to all In the mid-1990s, India identified availability, accessibility and affordability of medicines as the major weaknesses in its drive for quality and affordable healthcare for all. More than a decade passed before the UPA government started the Jan Aushadhi Scheme (JAS) in 2008 to counter high prices of branded drugs with affordable generic medicines sold at dedicated JAS outlets. To enlarge the distribution network, all 5

lakh pharmacies in the country, online pharmacies and ecommerce players like Amazon and Flipkart can also be licensed to sell PMBJP medicines on the condition that they will educate consumers about value buying through prominent advertisements. With its expanded distribution network and logistical muscle, PMBJP could be a game changer. Full article

India, adding 20GW of solar energy capacity The government plans to seek bids globally for 20 GW of solar generation capacity by companies ready to set up manufacturing facilities in India. "Twenty GW will be auctioned with condition that only those companies can participate that will set up manufacturing here," RK Singh, minister of power and new and renewable energy, said at a conference on Friday. "We have some aspirations... We want manufacturing in solar and when the fastest-growing installation is happening in India, there is no reason to import from other countries... so we are going to encourage manufacturing here," the minister added. The government plans to install

3

175 GW of renewable energy by 2022. While the government is confident of surpassing the target 'comfortably,' it is exploring ways to add incremental capacity through floating solar, solar manufacturing and offshore wind projects, among other measures. Full article
