At Berwick College we strive to cater for all students in our learning community. Students who show high academic aptitude and have high academic aspirations are particularly suited to our High Achievers Program.

Established in 2003, this program has been running successfully for 11 years and allows students to progress though school with their same age peers whilst ensuring they remain challenged with curriculum which is appropriate to their abilities.

Emphasis is placed on higher level thinking, problem solving and academic achievement. Involvement in the performing arts and community projects are also key features of this program.

A ‘high achiever’ must be prepared to take on the challenges offered, be willing to take risks and to set more challenging goals. The development and modelling of team work are critical in this program, and students must also have full parental support in order to pursue further independent learning at home.

Our high achieving students follow the AusVELS curriculum guidelines, however work presented is more intellectually challenging, often allowing students to demonstrate skills at a level 6 or 12 months, or more, beyond the expected level for their age.

Carefully designed programs ensure deeper understanding,

with improved problem solving and thinking skills. Dealing with

abstract concepts, improving creative and analytical skills and

increased opportunities for informal learning through both

local and international connections via a range of media have

proven to be successful in ensuring students’ engagement and

academic acceleration.

Selection Criteria:

A selection examination will be held on SATURDAY 3rd MAY 2014 from 10am to 1pm, in the Senior School building. Students are to arrive 30 minutes before the start of the testing.

Primary school recommendations and endorsements.

Parents and students will be interviewed (by invitation) prior to any decision on entry to the program.

Students who narrowly miss out may elect to be placed on a waiting list.

Closing date for applications is 4pm on TUESDAY 22nd APRIL 2014

A further date has been booked for MONDAY 5th MAY 2014 for those students unable to attend the exam on Saturday 27th April. This will commence at 9am, and end at 12 noon. Students are to report to the main Administration Office 15 minutes before the start of the testing.

Zoning restrictions: Any grade 6 student from any Primary School can sit the HAST

test, for the ‘High Achievers Program’ at Berwick College. It is at the discretion of the Principal’s delegate—Mr Spencer Davenport (Assistant Principal), whether a student is enrolled into the HAP program subject to enrolment protocols. Sibling claim is still relevant, yet if students reside outside of the college zone, then students will (only) be considered on compassionate grounds. These requests should be made in writing and addressed to Mr Spencer Davenport.

Costing: The cost to sit the exam is $60.00. This is payable to the Administration Office when you book the exam. The deadline for booking is TUESDAY 22nd APRIL. It is important that bookings are made by this deadline for the ordering of test papers from ACER.
