MEETING IN THE MIDDLELesson Twenty-Six: Stress Session #2 Research BriefThe many diculties arising from the Coronavirus pandemic aresomething that none of us have control over. Feeling like ourlives are out of control is highly stressful. Science says thattrying to change stressors that we cannot control actuallyincreases stress. In this lesson, we put that research intopractice by helping students to focus on things they do havecontrol over in their lives. One way to add a sense of control into our lives that also helps takeour minds off uncontrollable stressors is to engage in Gratitude practices. Focusing ourattention on parts of our lives that we are grateful for has been proven to increase wellbeing. And of course, social connection is critically important during this time. Reaching out andcommunicating our appreciation for people who bring joy to our lives supports wellbeing boththrough increasing gratitude and social connections. Finally, hope has been shown to be acritical ingredient to resilience. The Hope-building activity in this lesson aims to boostoptimism and positivity toward the future even during these dicult times. Teachers in the above-mentioned content areas will devote their entire class time on Mondayand Tuesday for their students to complete the assessments. If hybrid students need moretime to nish, they will have time on Thursday and Friday to complete the assessments atschool. If LO online students need more time, they will need to complete the assessmentsindependently from home by the end of the week (May 7th). Students who nish early will beoffered asynchronous activities to work on. Given that students completed the assessmentsin the fall and winter, they should be comfortable navigating the platform. Students who receive accommodations via a 504 or IEP will receive additional communicationfrom their learning specialist and/or counselor. The purpose of this is not to give your child a score or grade but to determine how to bestsupport their learning. We appreciate your partnership in supporting and encouraging yourstudent(s) to do their best. Please contact Alix Loeber, Assistant Principal, at [email protected], if you have anyquestions.
