Hidden settings on Omnia

Hey everyone, there are a couple of hidden menus and utils on the Omnia. This is ones I've found so far, when I get more I'll share them with you.

How to change the loudspeaker volume for ringtones, movies, mp3s etc

In the phone keypad type: *#0002*28346#You will then have a screen pop up called audio control util.

Click menu, normal then handset (the first one, Phones headset / loudspeaker) Here you can change: Speaker volume: SPK(02) -db is less volume, I have set this to -1.5db (level)Digital-to-analog: DAC(0C) this effects the overall volume of Mp3s, movies etc -both headset and loud speaker. I have set this to 0db.Radio Volume: RVOL

How to change the headset / earphones volume.Click menu, normal then headset (the second one, Headphones) Here you can change: Headphones volume: HP(02) -db is less volume +db is more volume, I have set this to 0db (level)Digital-to-analog: DAC(0C) This effects the overall volume of Mp3s, movies etc. I have set this to 0db.Radio Volume: RVOL

* You must click menu / apply for changes to take effect, * I recommend play a Mp3 launch the app, then apply the changes and set your prefered max volume.* Setting high levels could damage the loud speaker or your headphones, not to mention your hearing!!

I don't recommend touching other settings unless you know what your doing or have copied the defaults so you can revert back.

Post #10Fong replied to David's poston October 2, 2008 at 11:07pmHi David, I wonder that the vibrate function is it applicable when typing sms? If "yes", How to configure it, thx!!!!

Post #11David wroteon October 3, 2008 at 2:57amThis depends on the ROM version of your phone. There are subsets of the operating system for each country and network provider. As mine is from Orange in the UK a number of things have been switched off and/or deleted. This can probably be switched on using a tweak in the phone's registry to basically have a vibrate each time the screen is touched. However, Samsung probably decided to not allow this as it would kill the battery if you text a lot.

The most comprehensive ROM with new features and settings can be downloaded from the Omnia site for those people who live in Singapore and Malaysia. I've known of a few others who've installed this and it seemed to work for them - however there are some (even highly skilled) who've broken their phones, so be warned!!

Post #121 replyDanny wroteon October 4, 2008 at 5:44amiv got a omnia an when i click menu theres no thing saying normal HELP!!!! lol

Post #13Kathryn wroteon October 4, 2008 at 9:07amcan anyone tell me why i can't hear the person on the other line when the handsfree kit is plugged on? thx!

Page 3: Hidden Settings on Omnia

Post #14David wroteon October 4, 2008 at 1:27pmKathryn,Some of the Omnia handsfree kits have a tiny volume wheel to control the volume - if not they can be controlled using the volume controls on the phone. I'm assuming you're using the standard Omnia one?

Otherwise you can tweak the RVOL settings using soundtest.exe or the tip at the top of the page.

If it's something else please let me know so I can have a look for you. ;-)

Post #15David replied to Danny's poston October 4, 2008 at 1:34pmDanny, can you check to see if you have the following file please? It's called Soundtester.exe and should be in your Windows folder. Also, can you say which network operator you have, is it 8gb or 16gb and is the phone unlocked?

Post #161 replyKathryn wroteon October 4, 2008 at 11:01pmHi David,Thx for the reply. yes.. using the standard omnia kit and it comes with the volume wheel. have tried tweaking it but no change.

i've also made the changes using your tip at the top of page..still no volume.anything else i should tweak?

Post #19David replied to Kathryn's poston October 5, 2008 at 12:48pmHi Kathryn,What happens when you listen to music using the same headphones? Also, have you tried using any other 3.5mm type headphones. I think a process of elimination might help here ;-)David.

Post #201 replyMario wroteon October 5, 2008 at 1:49pmhi just got my omnia 8gig version sim free a few days ago but after a few days using it, i tried the camera and is not loading. i tried a factory re-set but nutting yet. any help please

Post #21David replied to Lisa's poston October 5, 2008 at 3:01pmHey Lisa,Just had a look at the page and there are some useful tips in there, especially the one about the ringtones to free up memory - that's a corker!! I've already freed about 20mb of storage. Nice one Lisa ;-)

Post #22David replied to Mario's poston October 5, 2008 at 3:07pmHi Mario,There could be a few reasons for this. You might need to assign a function to some of the hardwre buttons on the actual phone. To do this go to: Settings/Buttons then Camera or Camera Hold - you can then choose from the drop-down as some operators have blanked this out even if you do a factory reset.

What happens if you go to programs and select it from there?

Post #23Andy wroteon October 5, 2008 at 3:41pmdo u know why it is i can not play my music via the touch player widget?but they work in media player?is it because the media player uses a different format to the touch player?also ive read alot of stuff about the gps find and go is still not ready? do u know if that is true?

Post #24Lisa wroteon October 6, 2008 at 1:22pmAlot of these questions are answered in my link, I know its a Vodafone forum but I made the topic to help all Omnia users. Your Welcome David, nice to get a patted back!

Post #27David replied to Andy's poston October 7, 2008 at 7:51amHi Andy,I've got a support call to Orange about this. Whenever I use Tomtom (also have to use GPS Gate) it connects to Orange GPRS Internet and displays a message stating this. I've asked if I will be charged for this as it isn't actually transferring any data through Orange and is connecting directly to the satelites - or so I'm led to believe. As soon as I hear anything back I'll send an update.

Post #281 replyAndy wroteon October 7, 2008 at 3:55pmthank you david for your reply, its funny how it was one of the main selling points for the omnia but its not even ready? but still an awsome phone all togeather!did u say you have to use tom tom?did u have to download and pay extra for it? and does it work with no trouble?

Post #29Nasser wroteon October 8, 2008 at 12:38amThanks for he great tip,

Do I have to register the DIVX programe or is it operational without registration.Does it play files with *.flv extensions.

Once again thanks for the great tip.

Post #30Nasser wroteon October 8, 2008 at 12:58amReading the forum it seems I have to download the player from the site, I have done it and now the files are playing.

Hi Andy,Google Maps will work with GPS as it is fully compatible however straight out of the box Tomtom 7 and the Omnia won't work. You need to have something to split the GPS port and convert the signal to get Tomtom to work. I use GPS Gate and tweaked the settings on this, Tomtom and GPS settings on the Omnia. It then worked straight away and I'm very pleased with it.

If people tell you to use a specific product, be it Tomtom or IGO just ignore them... at the end of the day it's down to personal preference, what you need it for and how you want it look/function.

Lisa wroteon October 8, 2008 at 4:33amHi, updated with a new tip that I figured out late last night. Garmin works fine without using a GPS port doodah.

Post #33Andy wroteon October 8, 2008 at 3:51pmok for my last question were can you purchase ether garmin or tom tom for the omnia?

Post #341 replyDavid wroteon October 9, 2008 at 3:47amYou're spoilt for choice - you can get them from likes of PC World or direct from the manufacturers.http://www.tomtom.com/http://www.garmin.com/garmin/cms/site/uk

If you go for TTN7 you will need something to split the ports. If you go for GPS Gate I'll give you a copy of the settings I use... or I could just start a new post...

Post #37David replied to Vags's poston October 10, 2008 at 2:28amHi Vags,I've heard of the software but haven't used it yet. I decided to stay away from Destinator 7 as the company has recently been bought out by a competitor and will be merged with other products. Until things calm down I decided to go for the likes of TTN7 which I am pleased with.

I think the camera firmware must be dependent on the country and ROM version as it attempts to launch on mine and then closes after 5 seconds.Cheers,David.

Post #39Mustafa wroteon October 10, 2008 at 2:56am@david:AFAIK;"update camera firmware" is necessary after a firmware update, since the firmware update leaves camera as is.

Post #461 replyMavis replied to David's poston October 12, 2008 at 2:42amI have tried to adjust the volume of the headset, which is HS(04) for my phone to Odb. However, the volume for the radio is still soft. Did i do it correctly?

Post #47David replied to Mavis's poston October 12, 2008 at 2:13pmHi Mavis,Chances are you've done everything right, I've found that on some versions of the phone's ROM it will still sound quiet for a number of things and then all of a sudden it will suddenly get louder. Apparently Samsung are to release a new ROM within the next few weeks and it will be advertised on the site. According to the highly accurate grapevine it will solve quite a few problems... including volume problems....

Post #48Judy wroteon October 12, 2008 at 3:32pmCan you tell me how i can zoom in and out moving my fingers when the font is small? also how come my screen can't switch to both ways? Can i also get the actual facebook like the one that iphone has on this phone? is there a program for it? Can we get Itune stuff on here? please respond!!

Post #49David wroteon October 13, 2008 at 3:00amHi Judy,When you're in a message double tap the screen and it will zoom in. A slide indicator will appear and you can zoom in/out. Once you double tap again it will revert to normal.Look at one of the earlier responses (Norrie) to see how to get your screen to rotate.I think to get Facebook on a mobile you need to type in m.facebook.com in the address... as for iTunes... I think it will be a while as Apple will want to cash in on their attempt at a mobile phone so it might be a while.

Post #501 replyNasser replied to David's poston October 13, 2008 at 3:00amI tried the settins and indirectly changed something else now there is no sound does anyone have the defaults.

Mustafa,I gotta say these are quite impressive. The last one can be a bit dodgy to try if you're at work though, it can put the functions into a never ending loop. I think it must be used by technicians if a phone goes faulty.

Post #65Sylvia replied to Boy's poston October 17, 2008 at 3:54amHi Boy , yes is possible to use a song from your emdia player like a ringtone , you just have to copy the file to the directory . my ringtones.. the one you will find , under.. my documents just copy that file to : myringtones ,, and then select it like a favourite ringtone.. goodluck..Syl

Post #663 repliesDavid wroteon October 17, 2008 at 5:46amSylvia and Boy,There is a better way to do this. Go to the My Storage area of your phone and create a directory called My Ringtones and put the various MP3 files in there. If you put it on the device area it will eat into your program memory and the phone will slow down. I've moved all sounds and ringtones to the My Ringtones folder and I immediately managed to free about 20mb.

Post #711 replyDavid replied to Murado's poston October 18, 2008 at 3:03pmOkay folks, I'll see if I can answer a few here in one go...(for Mystiq, Sylvia, Owen & Gemma)NOT ENOUGH VIDEO MEMORY - this happens for a number of reasons...- other applications are still open and using available memory- storage for photos is main device and not "My Storage"- My Storage has dismounted (sometimes hardware fault sometimes old ROM)- do a software reset (several ways to do this)

SOUND & VIDEO - too loud and too quietThis is related to the ROM version you are using. Later versions automatically change the settings and make the volume to quiet it is barely audible. However, it can be tweaked using the tip on the first page of this forum. You will need to tweak Camcoder, speaker and RVOL settings. It might also be worth doing a firmware update on the camera as well using the tips Mustafa gave earlier.

SOUND FILESI just moved all files to the directory on My Storage as detailed earlier and in an earlier post from Lisa Evrae (Vodaphone forum). So far this has worked a treat for me.

QUALITY OF VIDEO RECORDINGThis can be related to several items such as:- video resolution of capture- type of file used for format- amount of lighting- is there any muck on the lens (I'm always doing that!!)- storing items on My Device of My Storage

Page 13: Hidden Settings on Omnia

There is a rumour that the latest ROM for us Brits will help to solve this problem. It is due this month from Samsung. As soon as it is available I hope to test it out...

Post #73Gemma wroteon October 19, 2008 at 2:55amThanks David, I'm running HH1 and HG5 so would expect the video recording quality to improve. It's not the picture that's the issue just the sound being out of sync and also very muffled, almost like when you get too close to a mic, that kind of sound.

do you have any tips on what would be the best settings on 'camcorder' when you enter audio util?

Thanks for your help.Oh and David Moore, what a pointless comment, if you only wanted to make calls you could've got any old phone.Omnia clearly wasted on you.

Danny wroteon October 19, 2008 at 8:31pmHiya Mystiq, you won't loose data by using performing a soft reset :)

Post #78David wroteon October 21, 2008 at 6:33amHow to extend battery life...For Omnia owners in the UK the topic of poor battery life is a sore point as our ROM version is several months behind the rest of Europe and Asia. However, there is a way in which you can extend battery life so long as you don't mind having to live without 3G/roaming capabilities... Here's how:

Main Menu -> Settings -> Personal Tab -> Phone -> Frequency Band and then select - GSM 900/1800 (for Europe)- GSM 850/1900 (for USA)

After this I would recommend a power down of the phone - not a soft reset.

Post #85Daniel wroteon October 22, 2008 at 12:25pmAlright Guys, Thanks for the help above.......anyone else useing spb mobile shell? Made the phone so much better to use (everything can be done with your finger!) also helps with battery life for some reason. I spent ages trying to get my phone looking better and hated the side scroll bars, you can even make it look like an iphone with the right update if you want to????

Get it here: (AUTO INSTALL IF PHONES CONNECTED)

http://www.spbsoftwarehouse.com/products/mobileshell/?en

its free for 15 days then costs £19 to buy, the skins are free and updated all the time.

Get them here (version 3.1): (DOWNLOAD TO PC THEN DROP ONTO PHONE SD CARD AND FOLLOW README)

http://www.imarche.net/omnia/index.php

Also SPB online is good for internet tv, internet radio (plays through handset speaker) and News, same rules with spbshell 15 days etc.

Get it here: (AUTO INSTALL IF PHONES CONNECTED)

http://www.spbsoftwarehouse.com/products/online/?en

Hope this helps anybody wanting to make your omnia more finger friendly. If you dont like the programmes you can remove them using the remove programme tool, the original omnia home screen is always accessable by just sliding your finger down.

Enjoy

Post #921 replyAndrew wroteon October 25, 2008 at 1:47amHi,

Had my Omnia for a month now and its starting to prove itself as a good phone, PDA and sat nav. Was a pain to get the gps to work at first but then I read a few forums ref: the GPS receiver and long story short I down loaded Port splitter set it up as described on the forum and of it went. It takes a few minutes to get a position lock at first (just put it on and ignore it for two minutes) then it seams to work fine after that. I am using Tomtom 6.

Just paired it up with a Venturi mini for the car and its great Bluetooth my music to the Venturi mini FM transmit it then to my car stereo and hay presto my music on the radio and a good hands free device too.

Have one question though any of you found some good games that use the accelerometer in the phone?

Thanks.

All I did was install this port splitter (link below)

http://classic.pocketgear.com/software_detail.asp?id=22697&associateid=9

And set it up as follows

Type in on the port input COM3.Set up the Baud to 9600And on output add COM0The start the splitter (don’t leave it running when you not using it as it will use all you battery charge fast)

Then for me I am running tom tom 6 so I set my gps receiver as NMEAGPS Baud to 9600GPS is connected to COM:0 port splitter.

The you should be of.

Post #99Lisa wroteon October 26, 2008 at 5:04pm@ Dyonne Shorter - I know the start up and power down screens are annoying but it is purely cosmetic and doesnt make any difference to how you operate your phone. There are advanced tool programs that allow you to change most functions or there are roms to totally fry/flash your handset to make as sim free but I should imagine it would void any warranty you might have with Vodafone and Samsung. When you have copied google maps from windows directory, go to start menu folder, programs and select edit which will open another drop box to say paste shortcut or something like that as I havent got my Omnia in front of me right now.

Post #100Lisa wroteon October 26, 2008 at 5:10pm@ Chris Botha - You can, download a little softkey app or an advanced config tool and get your own softkey shortcuts. http://forum.vodafone.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=7592 for tips, not just for Vodafone users.

Post #102David wroteon October 28, 2008 at 2:52am@ Dyonne,I've come across a lot of people who have problems with Shozu as it uses at least 400kb of memory. I recommend closing down other apps to free up some memory and try again. Some network operators try to disable the Shozu app or move it to another location on the phone.

Page 19: Hidden Settings on Omnia

David wroteon October 28, 2008 at 7:33amShehroze,If you haven't already done so I would recommend moving the sounds from the device to storage as well. Go to -> Settings -> System -> Memory and have a look to see how much virtual storage you have and also close any other apps that are open.

In File Explorer go to My Device. Some people have had a problem with the area called "My Storage" dismounting. This can be seen as you will also have an area called My Storage2" and this is a fatal hardware flaw in the earliest of the Omnia handsets... I had to replace my 4 week old phone as it suffered from this many times.

You could also try the following:Power - fully charge the phone, do a reset but leave it plugged to the charger. Now try the camera again - some batteries don't have the amps.iContacts - if you are using this software it will change numerous settings on your phone. The only way to totally get rid of it is to do a factory reset.

Let us know how you get on ;-)

Post #109David wroteon November 3, 2008 at 12:15amTommy,As I don't have a password set on my device here's the settings I've got...1 & 2.) Screen Lock/Password: Settings -> Buttons -> End Key (tab) and make sure the radio button for End Key Lock Device is checked. Whenever you press and hold the end call button for 3 seconds it will automatically lock the device. To prevent the password prompt you could try the following:Settings -> Lock -> then uncheck the box "Prompt if device unused for"3.) Phone Case: I no longer use the stylus and bought a case from eBay as a lot of the Apple iPhone cases will also fit the Omnia. The choice is a lot greater from when I bought mine back in September.4.) Car charger & holder: not many phones come with these and as every car is different the manufacturers would tell us to take a running jump off a cliff if we were to ask for these to be provided. I got a car charger from eBay for less the £3 GBP and its worked great so far.

Post #110ZhenHui wroteon November 3, 2008 at 7:31amHi David,

My ominia occasionally will shut off completely if it was knocked and i am not referring to those knocks when the phone drop on the fall. It is more like you lift the phone about 1 cm above the the surface and drop it. Sometime it will just shut off but not every time and the chances is low.. The irritating part is when i put it in my pants pocket and it just shut off without my knowledge when i accidentally knock it. Is this normal? how can i justify my concern with samsung?

Post #111David wroteon November 4, 2008 at 12:01amJiang,I would tell Samsung exactly what is happening with the phone and ask for a replacement. If they say no tell them you are not happy with that and wish to escalate. They have a duty of care to you as a new customer especially as the phone will be covered by their own warranty. It sounds like it could be a faulty PCB or battery connections. The phone will be tested to withstand greater forces and shutting off when in a trouser pocket doesn't sound too good.

It took me a while to figure out that voice recording function is hidden in Notes, but it seems that it is barely functional. With my previous phone - a Sony Erricson - I could set voice recording as a hard button shortcut. This meant that I could record conversations or notes, but more importantly - I could record important phone conversations with the push of a button while the call was in process.

Any suggestions of how I could set this up on my Omnia?

Post #159Marcelo wroteon November 30, 2008 at 4:57pmHello Everyone,I have my Omnia for already 2 weeks, and trying to get thru with it.I have previously a WM5 device, but to use the GPS, I didn't need to have the phone enabled (on), while on the Omnia, i must have the phone enabled because otherwise, PortSplitter or GPSGate cannot open the GPS port. This causes that the battery last a lot less.Do you know if there's a way to enable the GPS without having to have the phone also enabled? Thanks for your help!

Post #1601 replyDavid wroteon November 30, 2008 at 11:05pmA couple of things here...David Rhys Howell - have you also downloaded the Samsung XP Modem driver to your PC? If you are using Vista it might not allow to flash the ROM to your Omnia.

Marcelo,There is a way in which you can enable the GPS without having the phone services switched on but it involves a modification to the registry on the phone. I would recommend using Total Commander as it is one of the easiest to use.

My experience shows that the following steps seem to improve the time to get a GPS fix, without need to download XTRA data:1. Go to Settings > System > Enhanced GPS and set both settings to "Disable"2. Go to your device's registry, and see the key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\GPS Intermediate Driver3. Change the following string values to nothing (don't delete them, just edit them and clear the value): CurrentLogFile (originally \GPSID_log.txt)OldLogFile (originally \GPSID_log.bak)

Page 33: Hidden Settings on Omnia

4. Soft-reset your device5. With File Explorer, go to My Device, and delete the two GPSID_log files you see, and the file named xtra. If you don't soft-reset, you will not be able to delete some of them.6. Check again the registry setting. Sometimes in rare cases it may revert the settings back - but that's a general WM problem.

When texting;

I always send when backspacing, is there a way text sends can be 'confirmed' rather than just firing off?

When writing a new text which isn't threaded, the sentences are not started with capitals, despite the 'start sentence with capital' option being selected. However, when replying to a text, they always start with capitals?

And lastly, is there any way to stop received text messages being threaded and just listed as they are received?

I have been searching for this info for weeks with no luck, so even confirmation that these CANNOT be done would be relieving!

Thanks again

Second question. Answer: tap on the up arrow at the bottom left corner of the on-screen keyboard.

Third question. Answer: To disable threaded SMS, do this:HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Inbox\Settings\SMSAvailableChange dword value from 1 to 0 and you're done.

Post #177David replied to Alan's poston December 12, 2008 at 3:06amAlan,Each time I connected my Omnia to anything requiring GPS after each hard reset would take a while. When trying to use Tomtom for the first time it took more than 15 mins for the first fix. It can depend on a number of things such as weather, electrical interference and the ability to see a clear area of sky. Are you getting any error messages and does your operator allow you to use GPS on your talk plan?

Thank you for contacting Samsung Electronics.

In repsonse to your enquiry regarding GPS on your I900. If you arelooking for navigation on your handset, Samsung does not include thissoftware on the handset. The GPS Module included on the phone isprimarily used for Geo Tagging and other location based services. Whilstthe handset can be used for Navigation this software would be suppliedby a third party and not by Samsung.

I also had my unlocked/unbranded phone replaced by Orange and the new one had a bit of naff branding from Orange. However, I tend to use SPB mobile shell. This allows you to completely change the interface and use it as a touch phone just like the iPhone. It might take a little to get used to but I find it much better. And it also gets rid of any branding.

Post #200Steve replied to Alan's poston December 28, 2008 at 10:07am@Alan,I expect the response you received relates to navigation software as opposed to th GPS functionality provided by the Omnia. The GPS is part of the Omnia hardware and operates independently to any software installed. Some operators may disable GPS or hide the options through OS mods but it is still there and you can still use it provided any operator's attempts to cripple it are circumvented. As an additional note, the GPS within the Omnia is AGPS or Assisted GPS which uses a data connection to obtain a faster satellite lock. If you don't have coverage or a data plan then the GPS will work just like a basic GPS, obtaining fixes in minutes as opposed to seconds.

Hi David,I am just realizing you never told me how to have enabled the GPS (on) and the phone settings could be off.... so It doesn't run out of battery so fast when I use the GPS...

Post #218David replied to Natalie's poston January 5, 2009 at 12:31pmHey Natalie,The Omnia is a phone that has whole myriad of features - many of which are hidden by individual phone operators - so I understand that you might get a little frustrated.

Delivery reports - I would recommend turning these off. My operator (Orange) charged me for delivery reports so it will cost you twice as much to send messages. But if you want to know how to turn them on give me a shout ;-)

3G - you will only get good 3G calls/reception if the signal strength is at its highest. I turned the 3G off and went back to a dual band reception and the quality greatly improved - it also saved a massive drain on the battery.

WIFI - you will need to speak with your operator as to what you will get with your talk package.

Battery and phone turn off - there are a number of features that zap the battery, most of which you won't always need. I can give you some tips on this.

Cheers,David.
