Rules for Working in your Classroom

Your job

Teacher’s Job

If you need help…

When you are done working…

Listening in the

whole class

- Voice off - Stay in your seat - Raise hand if you want to speak - Look at the speaker at all times - Do not play with paper scraps, paperclips, tape, etc

- Do most of the talking - Decides who gets a talking turn when kids raise their hands - Can tell you to put things away not about the topic.

- Must raise your hand and wait until you are called on. - Look around at what the other kids are doing for clues

- Teacher decides when you are done. - Teacher gives a direction of what to do ~ usually go to another class or start working independently on an assignment

Small group with a

teacher

- Mostly listening to teacher and group members - Talk to share your answers and ideas - Probably still need to raise your hand - Switch who you look at ~ the speaker might change

- Makes sure that all kids get a chance to talk - Controls interrupting - Does about half of the talking - Teacher decides the topic

- Sometimes you raise your hand about ½ way up (not really high like in a whole class) - Sometimes you can just say, “Excuse me, I have a question”

- Teacher usually decides when you are done. -Teacher may ask you to do more, or do something over again. - Teacher will dismiss you – you cannot just leave

Small group without

a teacher

-Everyone talks a little bit. -Talk to share your ideas and answers - Everyone does work, you may not just watch others - Do not need to raise your hand to speak - No interrupting

-Walk around the classroom, watching the groups. -Teacher does not talk much -Answer questions -Decides when the work time is done

-One person raise hand to get the teacher’s attention, or 1 person walk over the teacher. Other people wait. -One person asks the teacher the question while others listen

- Can talk or whisper quietly about fun topics if work is all done. - Stay with the group when work is done – try not to separate yourself. -Listen for teacher direction to stop

Partners

-You must talk to your partner, ask questions and make comments. -Do half of the work, do not just watch

-Walk around the room, watching partner groups -Teacher does not talk much -Answer questions -Decide when time is done

-Both partners may raise hands -Both may walk up to the teacher -One person asks the question, the other person listens

-Can talk or whisper quietly about fun topics if work is all done. -Stay with your partner and talk to them. Do not separate yourself.

Working

Independently

-Keep working on the assignment until it is done. - Silent voice -No talking to other kids - No laughing out-loud, only silent

- Quiet voice or whisper most of the time. -Watch for kids raising hands with questions. -Decide when work time is over

- Raise your hand & wait for the teacher to walk over to you - Do not ask other kids - Take your work, walk quietly to the teacher.

-Even if you are done, it’s still independent work time for others - Work on homework for another class -Read quietly -Do not talk to other kids, even if they are done
