COACHING PRINCIPALS TRAITS

Demanding – only accept the best But do so in an encouraging and supportive way.

Every player deserves to be pushed to do their best. To not do this is to cheat the player out of reaching their potential.

Honest – only say “good job” if it is deserved But say “good try,” and “don’t worry,” a lot.

When you compliment a player he or she should know you genuinely mean it. To be dishonest is to cheat the player out of the possibility to learn and improve.

Caring – care about the game, the team, the player, and the parents By being enthusiastic, encouraging, supportive, and communicating effectively

To be uncaring is to cheat the player out of the right environment needed to learn and grow.

FUNCTIONS Role Model: without character all other roles are invalid. The coach should be a good person.

Manager: to get anything accomplished a coach must be organized and communicate well.

Psychologist: to get the best from a team a coach needs to be able to read and respond to who needs what, when, and how.

Teacher: one needs the subject knowledge and the skills to teach that knowledge to others.

Leader: a coach needs to have a personality, a philosophy, and a plan, that inspires trust, loyalty and dedication.

MANAGEMENT Harmony is the most important aspect of management; harmony causes staff and players to be at peace

with whom and what they are representing, and to carry out instructions with faith. The first and most important step in creating harmony is for the coach to clearly define and then act upon a logical, achievable and inspiring philosophy and mission.

Staff and players should be treated with humanity but discipline; a leader needs to show faith but insist on instructions being followed.

When achievements are made the coach should let his team take the credit.

PLAYER PRINCIPALS Attitude During a game players should always be asking themselves: “what can I do to help?”

Offensively, if in possession: “Am I making the decision that is most likely to result in success?”

Offensively if in support: “Am I making space, taking space, or providing an angle for a pass?”

Defensively, if pressuring: “Am I delaying, being patient, and forcing the play in the right direction?”

Defensively if in support: “Am I in my position, aware of my responsibilities, and communicating?”

In transition: “Am I reacting as quickly as possible?” Work Ethic Two statutes elite players need to live by

“It’s not the will to win that matters, everyone has that, it is the will to prepare to win that makes the difference.” (Bobby Knight)

“Amateurs practice until they get it right, professionals practice until they don’t get it wrong.” (Unknown) Concentration Every goal conceded is from a mistake, and every goal scored is from taking advantage of a mistake. Winning soccer games is a matter of making the least mistakes. To make the least amount of mistakes means to remain concentrated, disciplined, and try to make the most sensible decisions at all times. The most sensible decision is the one which has the greatest chance of success. Summary of Character Keys Selflessness, Determination, Intelligence

Physical: Speed, Strength, and Stamina

Ability to complete full, competitive games throughout a full, competitive season without injury and while dominating the opposition.

o Endurance, speed, quickness, strength, and flexibility Keys to assist:

Full, dynamic warm-ups; Plyometric exercises; Individually tailored strength and conditioning programs; Informed diets; Testing

Psychological: Approach & Emotions

Approach

Confident, but not arrogant: players should respect the opposition, but believe in themselves.

Players should always believe that something can be achieved from a game if they work hard enough: no matter what the score line and no matter how little time is remaining.

Emotions

Players should understand that even professionals make mistakes, and that they should not expect to perform perfectly.

Players should focus on what they are doing well, and give themselves credit when deserved.

Players should do their best not to look backwards and dwell on mistakes, but to focus on the next play or situation and imagine themselves doing well.

Players should understand that the biggest problem is reacting negatively to a mistake, because this turns into more mistakes.

Social: Role in Group

Players should feel accepted and feel comfortable that, as an individual, he or she is a valued member of the group.

The environment created should be one of support and safety.

2016 ROSTER SELECTION The main deciding factor in how many players are selected to the squad is the ‘talent gap”. All squads and all teams have players of differing ability; this is to be expected. At some point, however, there is significant “gap” dividing players ranked next to one another. For a program to have legitimacy certain standards must be applied. Players will be evaluated at try outs on the following model:

Player Name Technical Tactical Physical Psychological

Sally Soccerplayer 3/5 2/5 4/5 4/5

The details of each of these evaluation areas can be viewed on the previous page: Player Development Areas. Players will only be selected if deemed that they will be an asset the team. How much and to what degree a player will be an asset, however, is the discretion of the coaches. Selection to the HRMS girl’s squad is not to be interpreted as a guaranteed starting position, or guaranteed playing time of any kind. All players will be treated fairly, and playing time distributed fairly; “fairly,” however, does not mean “evenly”.

“Y” Passing Players checks away from middle cone,

receives ball with back foot and plays to end

target player. Target dribbles to back of start line. Other players follow their passes to new

positions.

Progress to: 1-2 pass with target; Pass to target and then

middle player checking for 1-2; Players coming

out for 1v1 defending; Players progressing to shooting when dribbling back

Passes should be accurate and well-weighted Receive ball with back-foot

Play return pass in front of runner

Organize players into 2 equal teams

Play 11v11 game

Promote player values of: hard work,

intelligent decision making (i.e. decisions that

result in the team keeping possession), and selflessness – what is best for the team.

Style of play should be attractive – short, quick passes with movement off the ball to

create multiple angles of support, aggressive –

a strong desire to engage the other team when in attack, defense, and transition, and

adaptable – with players being to think for

themselves and solve their own problems.

(i) Player approaches partner at speed, partner

holds out arm straight, player touches finger-tips with partner and then jockeys backwards.

Partner repeats. (ii) As above, but partner has

soccer ball at feet and when player is retreating

partner dribbles forward. (iii) As above, but

when partner dribbles ball over start line player

tackles partner.

Approach fast, slow down, get low, stay on

toes, stay side-on, jockey backwards with eyes facing forwards. (Do not cross feet going

backwards). Maintain same distance as when

fingertips touch. Put in hard tackle with ankle

locked.

X1 moves forward and then backwards to each

of the three cones on front, and then sprints across to cover goal before coach scores. X1

then joins back of other line. X2 goes, then X3

and so on.

Maintain correct technique when defending

cones: approach fast, slow down, get low, stay on toes, stay side-on, jockey backwards with

eyes facing forwards. (Do not cross feet going

backwards). Show desire to stop goal by sprinting as hard

as possible

Pair with the ball pass it back and forth to one

another (wait several second after receiving to

pass to allow defending players to get in shape.)

Pair without the ball react to whomever is in possession by pressuring or covering.

Switch roles after 1 minute

Whichever player has the ball the player

directly opposite pressures. His / her partner

“drops” to cover.

React quickly

Pressure: Approach fast – angled run – measured slow down, side on, on toes

Cover: drop backwards (never turning back)

tuck across / in to tighten space between

partner

3 teams of 4 players per team

Team on one end of the grid has possession of the ball and tries to pass the ball on the ground

through the middle channel to the team on the

opposite end. The team in possession can pass the ball between themselves but should try to

pass the ball across in no more than 10

seconds. The team in the middle acts as a unit to stop the

ball being player through.

If the ball gets through the middle team turn

around and try to stop it happening again.

If the ball does not get through possession goes to the opposite team anyway.

Switch team in the middle every 4 minutes

Defending team (in the middle) need to act as a

unit: Whoever is opposite the player with the ball

needs to hurry to pressure

Other team mates need to react quickly to drop and cover.

Team needs to stay compact

Team should always be in some sort of “check mark” shape

(Teams on the end should look to move the

ball quickly with one or two touches per

player, work the defense out of position and play the ball across firmly and accurately.)

(Written) Description (Visual) Organization Coaching Points

All players perform dynamic stretches

Remain concentrated, disciplined and serious

All players at the front of their lines run with ball to center and leave ball just in front of

cone to their right. Players then run ¾ way

around the center square and collect the ball waiting there for them. They then dribble that

ball to the back of the line they are now facing.

They leave the ball with the player at the start of the line to repeat. Go both ways around.

Progress: combo pass to pass ball (instead of

just leave). Add “move” on return run.

Keep ball close and under control, but far enough in front to reach top speed. Look for

two - three touches between picking up and

dropping off ball. Dribble with laces.

X1 checks back to cone to make onside run.

X2 plays through ball in front of X1’s run. X1 takes positive touch and attacks defender,

beasts defender, and shoots on goal before

going past cone-line X1 collects ball

X2 goes to X1 spot, next player in line plays

ball to X2 Progress to passive player as defender (instead

of dummy). Progress to active defender

Defender can only defend in 2nd section.

Check back and time run

Well weighted and accurate through-ball

Positive first touch Attack with:

Speed

Confidence

Control Attempt “move” appropriate distance away

from defender

Take shot – on target – immediately after

beating defender

in 44x20 area

Attacking team have to dribble over line to attack the goal

When a player dribbles over the line he can be

joined by one team mate for support When a player dribbles over the end line one

member of the defensive team can join in to

defend

Chose moment when to try and beat opponent (i.e., when there is a 1-on1 opportunity, not a 2

and then runner plays ball to opposite target.

X1 – X2, X2 –X1, (X2 makes run inside,)

X1 – X2, X2 – X3, X3 through ball to X2

Progress to through-ball (pass #5) being played

long to the player standing diagonally opposite

on the different grid.

Passes should be made with the inside of foot

and played with correct weight and accuracy.

Passes should be made with the back-foot. (In diagram this would be: (1)right, (2)left, (3)left,

Ball starts on the outside where there are 2

players.

Rhythm is as follows: Ball goes in, ball goes across, ball goes out.

Players always follow their pass

2-touches max; Make sure to cushion the ball

on first touch and have it land in front of body;

Step into pass and play with one motion; Standing foot should be next to the ball, with

toe pointing towards target; Players should use

the inside of their kicking foot to strike the ball; After striking the ball the kicking leg should

“follow through”; Hips should be pointing

towards target

Divide players into two equal teams. Teams

play small-sided game. Score by dribbling the ball between any gate.

If one avenue to score is blocked off, change

direction and switch the point of attack to try a less well-defended avenue.

X1 and X2 try to move the ball from one target (T) to the other without the defender (D)

intercepting the ball.

Only condition: the ball must cross over the grid before being moved from one target to the

other. The ball can be moved directly over the

square between X1 and X2, or, the ball can be played to one from the other via one of the T

players.

Rotate all players

Take two touches max: one to receive and one to pass

Stay on toes to receive ball

Take first touch in front of body so able to play the ball immediately with second touch

Make pass with inside of the foot

Pass should be accurate and correctly weighted Play pass in front of receiving player’s run if

wanting to lead them

Make sure when not on the ball one is moving to a good supporting angle

Communicate specific instructions of what

player in possession should do

As above, but extra player added on defense (D2), and extra player added on X (X3)

As above, plus:

X3 always check shoulder to observe

defender’s position – especially when calling for or receiving the ball

Look to “bounce” the ball off X3 back to passing player and then out in another direction

(purpose is to unsettling the defense)

3 teams (3 players each team), 4 squares

Reds play 3v1 vs. white player

If reds make 6 passes ball gets played to a teal player. Whatever teal player the ball gets

played to, the other two teal players go to join.

A new member of the white team enters that grid to be the defender. The red team spread

out into the vacant grids.

If a defender wins the ball his or her team take possession, team that lost possession become

defending team.

Start with defenders only walking

Pass the ball quickly (2-touches)

Try to suck the defender in somewhat before

making pass Create good angles of support off the ball

Hurry to support player

8 players (including goalkeeper) vs. 6 players

Coach distributes the ball by playing it from

halfway line to GK. 8 players (in red) receive the ball from GK and

score in either small goal, or get ball back to

coach. 6 players (in white) attempt to gain possession

of the ball and score in the big goal

No long balls from the GK – all balls must be

thrown

Receiving player needs to make well-timed run and receive the ball with his or her hips open

and facing the field. Goalkeeper needs to

distribute a ball that is easy to control. All other team members should be looking for angles of

support to play the ball out. Progress the ball

B. Standing up: 1. Toss ball in air to one

another, 2. Play ball into each other’s hands (half-volleys)

C. Try to throw balls past one another

Stay on toes with knees bent

Always keep the ball in front Keep hands together

3 teams (3 players each team), 4 squares

Reds play 3v1 vs. white player If reds make 6 passes ball gets played to a teal

player. Whatever teal player the ball gets

played to, the other two teal players go to join. A new member of the white team enters that

grid to be the defender. The red team spread

out into the vacant grids. If a defender wins the ball his or her team take

possession, team that lost possession become

defending team.

Start with defenders only walking

Pass the ball quickly (2-touches)

Try to suck the defender in somewhat before making pass

Create good angles of support off the ball

Hurry to support player

Set up two areas across the front of the goal

X1 to X2, X2 to X1, X2 to the middle, X1 back

to X2, X2 to X3, X3 through ball to X2. X2 shoots on goal.

(X1 moves up to X2s spot, next player in line moves up X1s spot, next pass goes to X3 first.)

Stay on toes

Accurate well-weighted passes

Use back-foot to play ball

“Pass” to the corner of the goal

Notes: All players do dynamic; goal keeping at Y passing go on simultaneously; passing and shooting go on simultaneously (2 different groups)

Shooting

(Written) Description (Visual) Organization Coaching Points

Players in the middle collect a ball from the outside, dribble with it into the middle section

and then out again (through a different side),

and pass the ball into which ever goal they are facing. Repeat.

Players on the outside help collect balls and re-set them.

Switch teams every 60-90 seconds.

Move quickly

Keep ball under control

Drag-back turn if possible

Calm pass to the goal

X1 passes to ball to X2 (or either player he or she is facing). X1 then follows pass and takes

X2s position.

When X2 receives the ball he or she progresses forward to the center line and then makes a

pass to one of the players at the opposite end of

the grid. The player receiving the ball repeats the

pattern.

Players should not cross the center line when passing the ball

Progress to lay-off pass

When receiving the ball take positive first touch in front

Look to take a total of 2-3 touches before passing the ball

Get as close to the center line as possible – without crossing it – before making the

pass

Strike ball with good weight (at least 50% power)

Pass the ball with either inside of the foot or laces

Use both feet to pass ball

As above, except player in possession is now

taking a shot on a goal keeper. (Do not go past the first line of cones when shooting.)

1. Player runs forward and takes a shot

2. Player plays long ball to person at the front of opposite line – he or she controls

the ball and progresses forward to take a shot

3. Player plays rolling pass to the middle of

the field, opposite player runs on and hits it first time

As above, plus:

Think of the shot as a “pass”!

Transition

(Written) Description (Visual) Organization Coaching Points

3 teams of 2 players 2 teams play possession against the other team

As soon as defending team wins the ball they

switch roles with team that lost the ball

Change quickly from possessing to defending, and vice versa

Make sensible, accurate, and correctly weighted passes

Create good angles of support

Work hard to win the ball back

3v1 in small grid 3 players look to get 10-15 passes, if successful

a different white defender comes in and

outgoing defender does 2 push-ups If defender wins the ball he or she plays

quickly out to surrounding supporting players;

white team then keep the ball away from the 3 red players

White team try to get 10-15 passes. If

successful red team do 2 push-ups. Ball then starts back with reds in small square

If white team are unsuccessful, all the team

does 2 push-ups and ball goes back to reds in small square

Change quickly from possessing to defending, and vice versa

Make sensible, accurate, and correctly weighted passes

Create good angles of support

Work hard to win the ball back

2 teams

Teams play 3v3 – 4v4 on the field Whatever team gets a shot off – whether it is

scored or not – stays on the field. The opposing

team sends on new players. New players always start out with the ball

Get shots off as quickly as possible

Retreat to defensive positions

immediately after shooting

Work hard to win the ball back

Defensive Play

(Written) Description (Visual) Organization Coaching Points

Player (X1) has the ball, player opposite the player with the ball (X2) pressures.

Player with the ball passes to his or her left,

and then moves to their right, joining the back of that line.

Player pressuring the ball continues their run and goes to the back of the line they were

pressuring.

Pattern repeats: play left, move right, player opposite pressures.

Progress to players playing either left or right – but always moving in the opposite direction to

their pass.

2-touches; Make sure to cushion the ball on first touch and have it land in front of

body; Step into pass and play with one motion

Close down the player quickly, slow

down, stay side-on and on toes

Teams play 2v2 game, but only 1 player per

team can be in each half of the field, therefore game in each half is 1v1

Each team tries to score in a different goal,

therefore each team has a defensive and an attacking player. When defender wins the ball

he or she passes to team mate in other of field

and team mate tries to score.

Try to prevent attacker from turning

Keep appropriate distance from attacker Force attacker in one direction

Stay side-on and on toes

Play 2v2 to goal Attacking team start out with ball and

defensive team come to pressure

Switch roles after go is over

Progress to 4v4

Player opposite player with ball pressures All other defenders fall in to cover

Pressuring defender: approach fast, slow down

stay on toes, stay side-on Cover defender: primary responsibility is to

pressuring defender. Stay close and behind

pressuring player

Goalkeeping

(Written) Description (Visual) Organization Coaching Points

A. Players individually with a ball i. Throw ball to oneself while moving

around

ii. Bounce ball to oneself

B. Players with partners Throwing and bouncing ball to one

another with variety or services while

moving around

Get both hands behind ball, with thumbs touching; bring ball into body after

catching

Get body behind the ball

Set up 3 cones in triangle shape (creating 3 “goals”) with one goal keeper in the middle,

three players around the outside, and one ball

Players on the outside try to score past the goal keeper by passing the ball through any of the

two cones Outside players try to move the ball as quickly

as possible

Shooting players make sure to not hit the ball too hard when shooting

Goal keepers constantly looking around to see where attack is coming from

Goal keepers move feet to put themselves in the best position to face the shot

Get both hands behind ball, with thumbs touching; bring ball into body after

catching

Set players in two teams

Goal keepers are on the same team as players

in area furthest away from them Players have to stay in designated areas

Goals are scored from GK throwing the ball

into other team’s goal, or players passing the ball in

Teams get 1pt for hitting player of the other team below the waist, 1 pt for catching the ball

Turn over if ball hits ground when passing to

teammate

Throw ball using throw-in technique

Get both hands behind ball, with thumbs touching; bring ball into body after

catching

Move the ball quickly between team

mates
