    CongratulationsFreda!!

Freda Hunter has been selected as our Spotlight Resident. Freda wasborn in Philadelphia, PA in 1921 and grew up there. She graduated fromWest Philadelphia High School. Shortly after graduation, Freda married ErnestCouncil and they had three children — Warren, Ronald and Laverne. Theywed during the great depression and were married for 25 years. Freda tellsus that during those years, society and culture were very restrictive as towhat activities they could do, but they enjoyed spending time with friendsin their homes. She was a member of Mount Pisgah African Methodist Churchin Philadelphia. She resided in Philadelphia during her married life whileErnest worked for the railroad as a waiter in the dining car. As her husband’sjob kept him away most of the time, Freda courageously raised their threechildren practically on her own, and the couple divorced. Freda then wentto night school at the University of Pennsylvania and trained to become adental technotherapist. She was employed by the city of Philadelphia forthirty years working in a dental clinic for children.

After many years, Freda reconnected with her childhood sweetheart,John Hunter, at a funeral. They were married for seventeen years and movedto Florida where John worked as a physical therapist for the Veteran’sAdministration. After John passed on, Freda returned to Baltimore to livewith her granddaughter and eventually returned to Pennsylvania.

Freda has been a wonderful addition to our Hickory House family.
