Welcome to Hickory Furniture Mart, North Carolina’s most trusted furniture and industry leader for over 50 years. Our visitors travel to Hickory from approximately 38 states and several international countries every week in search of quality craftsmanship from some of the world’s most popular manufacturers, many who proudly call the Catawba Valley region their home.

Our famous North Carolina pricing brings visitors to the Mart initially, but our strong reputation for quality, value, design, service and selection is what keeps them coming back, often referring their family, friends and colleagues. We would like to thank all of our customers, tenants, manufacturers and friends in the furniture industry for making the Mart the invaluable resource and international destination it is today. Hickory, North Carolina can trace its cultural heritage back to the earliest part of the 20th century. George W. Hall, a young merchant, stood in front of his general mercantile business on Hickory’s main street and watched the freight trains pass by, bearing load after load of southern lumber headed for furniture factories up north.

North Carolina had only a few furniture factories at that time. In 1890 the state had only six furniture plants employing fewer than 200 employees. In 1901, Hall and a group of Hickory businessmen and bankers decided that some of the region’s lumber should be used to build furniture in Hickory. When these entrepreneurs organized the town’s first furniture factory, Hickory Furniture Company, Hall was only 28 years old. Despite his youth, Hall successfully managed that first plant and within the year he helped to start the town’s second furniture manufacturing business, Martin Furniture Co.

The natural trade routes along the rivers provided an artery by which both designers and craftsmen flowed into the Catawba Valley region in the early years of the 20th century. With the craftsmen came the knowledge and skills to train the abundant and willing labor force available in North Carolina’s foothills.

By the 1920s and 1930s, more furniture plants were forming as the industry spread throughout Hickory and the surrounding areas. But the Depression years were especially hard on the industry because furniture was still considered a luxury and many people could barely afford food, much less furniture.

With the end of World War II, the furniture industry experienced its biggest boom ever as returning military veterans looked for jobs that would enable them to build homes and buy new furniture for their families. Hickory area companies grew and split off, creating brand new furniture companies. As generation followed generation in the business of crafting furniture, Hickory and the Catawba Valley became the furniture manufacturing capital of the world.

In 1960, a handful of furniture manufacturers gathered for the first time to display their products to retail dealers. This wholesale exhibition was held on the site of what is now known as Hickory Furniture Mart. The Mart instantly became known as the premier destination for wholesale furniture exhibitions. In 1985, when much of the wholesale business shifted to High Point, Hickory Furniture Mart decided to open its doors to the general public for the first time and offer retail product at discounted wholesale rates. The Mart soon became the nation’s leading manufacturer-related furniture center and one of North Carolina’s top visitor attractions. Today the Mart continues to transition in an effort to better meet the needs of its customers in this ever changing environment.

Hickory Furniture Mart houses 100 outlets, factory direct outlets, showrooms, and private galleries, representing nearly 1,000 of the most recognizable brand names and popular designers in the furniture industry. The manufacturers represented throughout the Mart include most major fine furniture domestic manufacturers and several international manufacturers. The Mart also offers one of the largest and most diverse selections of accessories, fabrics, artwork, lighting, rugs, wall coverings and antiques.

People travel from every state and several international countries to visit Hickory Furniture Mart each year, with approximately

500,000 people visiting the Mart annually. Furnishings purchased at the Mart are often found in celebrity homes, apartments, condominiums, mansions, palaces and castles around the world.

The Mart has been highlighted in the New York Times, Newsday, Los Angeles Times, The Today Show, Consumer’s Digest SmartMoney, Reader’s Digest, Redbook, Woman’s Day and many other national publications and has been featured on the “Oprah Winfrey Show” and the Discovery Channel’s “Interior Motives with Christopher Lowell.” Hickory Furniture Mart has been North Carolina’s most trusted furniture resource and industry leader for over 50 years. Discover why people travel from all over the world to buy their furniture here. HFM

SALLY BENTLEY, DONNA CHAMBERLAIN, KIRSTEN HART:DESIGNING WOMEN“We love working with clients to create custom window designs for their homes. We start out by talking about their lifestyle. Let’s say you work at night and you need to sleep during the day, or you want to darken your media room in order to enhance your home theatre experience. For either of these you may want to consider layering your window coverings. Start with an inset blind made from a fabric simulating honeycombs. This will diffuse the incoming light and absorb the exterior sounds. Then add draperies with at least three layers. The first layer should be the decorative fabric, the second layer needs to consist of a lining with blackout or felt fabric and the third (back) layer works best when it is a white or eggshell colored material, which helps to create a uniform look from the outside in. If you need to incorporate any additional darkness into your space just add a valance to block the light from coming in through the top of the window. Whether you prefer to use blinds, shutters, shades, draperies, valances or a combination, the correct window covering is the finishing touch that should never be overlooked when decorating your home.”

HICKORY FURNITURE MART DESIGNERS AT YOUR SERVICE

DEBBY BUFF: GOODS HOME FURNISHINGS“Furnishing a home can be very emotional, so arriving prepared will help make this a more enjoyable process for you. A priority list, some sense of your design style, a budget and a projected time frame will help keep you organized and focused. Your priority list should include which rooms you will be decorating, who will be using the space, and floor plans or exact dimensions of each room. Color, fabric, function, art and lifestyle are all essential elements in overall design. Make a list of colors that you like, take pictures of any current items that you want to keep in the room along with any ‘inspiration’ pieces you may have. Many of my clients will bring their scrapbook or iPad with them, full of ideas, styles, colors and samples that they have collected along the way. Know what you are willing to spend per project and always keep your designer informed as this will help them lead you to the right selections and save you time and money. Be sure the designer is clear about your deadlines in order to identify whether products will need to be selected off the floor or if your timeline allows for more flexibility to custom order. Goods Home Furnishings’ seasoned design experts would like to make decorating your home a gratifying and rewarding experience. We are here to help you find the right selections that will make your home a place to be proud of for many years to come.”

ANGIE ALLEN AND ELIZABETH BURNS: HICKORY PARK FURNITURE GALLERIES“From your kitchen appliances, to your interior walls, to your bedding ensemble, blue is one of the hottest decorating colors this year and is being used universally throughout the home. Blue is often chosen as a dominant background color for an interior wall, or it can simply be used to accentuate any space. Clean, crisp, fresh and lively, blue is prominent in nature and therefore perfect for your home. With unexpected pops of color and mixed patterns, a delicate yet tantalizing environment may be achieved with minimal effort. A blue throw pillow strategically placed on a sofa or chair may be mixed with coordinating colors, or a vibrant blue pattern displayed on an upholstered headboard or comforter are just some of the innovative ways to integrate blue into your home environment.”

MELISSA BREDEN: HICKORY DESIGNER LLC“At Hickory Designer LLC, we lean toward the minimal approach to design where ‘Less is More.’ The theory of less is more isn’t about spending less; it is about achieving better design through simplicity. It is about getting the greatest impact through careful editing and restraint. Our goal for a space is to be serene and uncluttered, but not cold and sterile. Let the objects have some breathing room, to be better appreciated. There is a real art to creating spaces that have no excess, but that exude warmth and beauty. We like to let high quality and beautiful materials, speak for themselves and choose furniture and objects that are simple and pure in design. ‘Less is More’ can be applied to almost any style.”

JANET BRADSHAW: HOOKER FURNITURE OUTLET“The outlets inside Hickory Furniture Mart offer a great opportunity to purchase high end goods at significant savings if you come in with an open mind and prefer a more eclectic look for your overall décor. The best way to approach shopping outlets is to come in prepared with your room measurements and have a general idea of what you are looking for ~ then let the items you see guide you toward your end results. Find that one key piece that you love and build from there, selecting a color or texture to carry throughout your room. Don’t be afraid to mix wood finishes, patterns and accessories, Just stick with an odd number of three, five or seven in order to make the room visually appealing and more interesting.”

SCOTT SMART: REFLECTIONS HOME FURNISHINGS “Today’s florals are considered an art form that add color, style and generate a powerful design element in any living space. I prefer to use exaggerated sizes of individual buds, recycled latex materials and an overall grand scale in design. My arrangements convey a modern, floral couture styling, which is very different from the silk arrangements of the past. The key to stunning, inspirational designs begins with finding the perfect container to anchor the piece. This should be something that makes you smile every time you look at it. Your arrangements should end up being one and a half times the height of your container. This is a great way to add texture and express each room’s diverse personality.”

MITCHELL GOLD + BOB WILLIAMS“Crafting our earth-friendly upholstery in our state-of-the-art factory in the small town of Taylorsville, North Carolina, has far-reaching benefits for us all. It lets us make every effort to protect both the health of our employees and the environment with our production and materials choices.

Belonging to the Sustainable Furnishings Council has been invaluable in this regard; it gives us even greater insights into the latest eco-friendly manufacturing practices. Making our upholstery here also means more jobs for the American economy. And it gives you something you can count on: beautiful furnishings crafted with skill and pride by artisans whose families have been in the

business for generations. It also lets us invest in American innovation and technology — we’re always finding new ways to do things better, faster, and more economically. And it allows us to invest in the next generation by having a daycare center at our factory that helps make parents’ lives easier and helps get their children off to a great start. Bob and I have been involved in every aspect of the business since day one, and manufacturing here means we can be at the factory to personally insure our upholstery has the quality, comfort, and style our brand stands for. In 2014, we’ll be 25 years young, and while we have many exciting plans for the future, one thing will remain the same: our commitment to manufacturing in America.”

When it comes to our homes and our offices, we all seek to make a good impression on those who pass through our doors. We also wish to convey a sense of our own personal style or to make a statement about our own particular interests. As we shop to decorate these most personal of spaces, we focus on paint colors for our walls and uniqueness in furniture choices. We work tirelessly at times to communicate in our decor choices a certain message about who we are and what we value most. And what better way to make a powerful statement than in choosing lighting pieces that “wow” the beholder?

Truth be told, no other element in our décor mix would be noted and appreciated if it were not for the light that fills the room. Good lighting makes everything look better. Lighting adds a warmth to our rooms and a sparkle to all of the accessories we spend so much time and money searching for in order to make our house a home. When shopping for lighting, first consider whether the need is for task-oriented lighting such as reading or for performing kitchen tasks. Also consider that lighting is not always about function. Sometimes lighting is intended to add ambience to a space. A table lamp or a floor lamp is ideal for such a need.

When choosing table lamps not only is the look of the lamp important but also the scale and size of the lamp based on where it will be placed. For instance, a very large sofa may require that the chosen lamp be tall enough to look in proportion to the sofa. There are no rules saying that lamps should match. Although buying lamps in pairs is common, it may be more interesting to mix and match the lamps in a space. We want to avoid the pitfall of making our rooms look too much like a furniture showroom. Our homes should always reflect our personal style and look as though pieces have been collected and added over time. This approach not only gives our homes more uniqueness but adds a level of comfort and warmth to our living environment.

Floor lamps are often overlooked for adding not only a good source of reading light but to brighten up a dark corner of a room. There are many styles and selections of floor lamps out there. Swing arm lamps are perfect for placing next to a sofa or chair so that they are able to

provide a good source of reading light. Again, keep in mind the scale of the lamp based on the area of the room where it will be used.

Chandeliers are a perfect way to add a finishing touch to a room. Whether choosing a crystal chandelier to add a little glamor or selecting something that is more modern, the atmosphere of a room can easily be changed by lighting. A good rule of thumb when determining what size chandelier is needed is to take the length and width of a room and then add those two numbers together to determine the approximate diameter of the chandelier. It is very important to choose the correct size. A tiny chandelier may be lost in the middle of a large room. It is also not a good idea to have a chandelier that is too large for a space as it will overwhelm it and take away from the overall design.

For certain spaces such as kitchen and dining areas, pendants can add color or their own unique style. The industrial look with metals and glass is currently very popular. There are also many choices of different sizes and textures. Art glass, also known as “Tiffany” glass, is often an interesting choice in certain applications.

We must also mention the workhorse of the lighting family, the ceiling fan. Formerly a rather utilitarian item, the ceiling fan has now evolved into a design piece in its own right. High-end fans offer efficient and well-balanced motors as well as a variety of options for finishes and blades. There are also many types of light kits that can be added to ceiling fans, many of which are highly decorative. Some discerning shoppers might even consider the ‘fan-d’lier’ which is an interesting combination of a fan and a chandelier.

Last, but certainly not least, outdoor lighting illuminates our outdoor spaces and adds its own ambiance to our home’s exterior. Careful selection of outdoor lighting is important as one must consider finishes that will withstand the weather and designs that will complement the architectural style of our home. With careful selection of outdoor fixtures and landscape lighting, the “wow” factor has now come full circle. Guests will be amazed as they approach your well-lit home or office and will feel welcomed from their first moment of contact. HFM

For the past few years, neutrals have played a significant role in home décor. Although neutrals continue to be used in decorating many homes, there has been a recent shift to incorporate a splash of color into our room palettes. A little color can go a long way. Many people are opting to keep their staple pieces neutral, but are adding a mix of accessories in bold and vibrant colors throughout their homes. Neon pinks, dark fuchsias, bright oranges, various arrays of yellow and deep reds are some of the most popular colors in 2014. And, accessories can easily be changed with each new season or state of mind.

Incorporating animal themes and designs into a room is still trending strong into this year. Whether it is

the use of faux furs or real

animal skins, fabrics in animal

prints, unique artwork

or statues depicting animals, there seems to be a bit of an animal lover in all of us and we want to continue to display our love for animals inside our homes.

Funky accessories that are totally unconventional and quirky give a glimpse of the homeowner’s true personality, are fun, and bring an eclectic flair to any room. Integrating

vintage elements along with new designs blends nostalgia with a modern day twist.

Gold, silver and bronze accessories are timeless and bring warmth and style throughout the home. Whether these metal accessories are added in subtle hints or used as a bold focal point like an oversized gold mirror, they are a favorite among decorators and designers of all levels.

Colored glass expressions in bottles, vases and unique artwork make any area chic and elegant. Rare and authentic artisanal objects handmade by local artisans highlight unique craftsmanship and can be displayed in any area of your home. Hand-painted ceramic pieces, hand-carved Asian

furniture and keepsakes from your travels make exotic backdrops for your guests to enjoy and become great conversation pieces during any dinner party.

People often wonder what size Oriental rug is best to use in each of their rooms. Of course there is no hard set rule because it really depends on your own personal preference, the size of your open space and ultimately the size of your furniture. As a general rule, with a dining room setting, most rug professionals will advise you to select at least an 8 x 10 rug for a table that does not include any leaves and is accompanied by six chairs. If you own a table with one leaf and eight chairs, you will need a rug that is approximately 9 x 12 in size. A table with two leaves and ten chairs usually requires at least a 10 x 14 rug. The table and all of its chairs should sit completely on the rug with the chairs pushed in or pulled out.

If you have a larger living room or family room, you may need a larger than average rug, but each space is completely unique. Most of the time, you will want the front legs of your sofa or sectional to sit at the edge of your rug. You do not want to cover up your rug with furniture since it should remain the focal point in your room that pulls everything else together.

You will notice Oriental rugs are mainly displayed in dining rooms, living rooms and family rooms, but they are often used in large foyer areas, on staircases, in dens, libraries, office areas, bedrooms and bathrooms.

Our rug galleries offer a vast selection of fine Oriental rugs to take home with you immediately. If you decide you would rather customize a rug specifically for your home, keep in mind that it may take around three-six months to weave a custom hand knotted 6 x 9 rug and four-eight months for an 8 x 10 rug, depending on the country of origin and the current demand of custom orders.

“Color and size are the two most important attributes that a customer should consider before selecting their rugs,” suggests Mohamad Majma, owner of Ziba Furniture & Rugs. “A rug’s color should enhance your space and accent tones used throughout the rest of your room. Measuring your space is

also important. After knowing your correct room size, I can ensure the most accurate selections to best suit your needs.”

When caring for your rug, do not be afraid to vacuum it. Try to stay away from the fringes whenever possible. If you need to deep clean your entire rug, you should have it professionally cleaned, but not dry cleaned. There is a special process used for cleaning Oriental rugs to prevent damaging them. Contact the gallery where you purchased your rug for suggestions on the best places

to professionally clean your rug. Many offer this additional service. For those who do not, they will provide you with a list of reputable professional rug cleaners for you to contact. The absolute best way to spot clean your rug is to use a mild liquid soap (such as Ivory) and cold water. Mix the mild liquid soap and cold water together and spot clean the areas which need to be treated with the foam.

David Mostafaloo, owner of Unique Oriental Rugs & More by David recommends always contacting a reputable rug gallery where you feel comfortable discussing all of your Oriental rug needs. “I work with customers from around the world. Once I receive their floor plans, photos of their rooms and samples of any fabric or furniture pairings, I am able to start selecting options which I feel will best complement their space.”

It is also important to use carpet pads with your fine Oriental rugs. A carpet pad’s main function is to prevent your rug from moving. They are also used to protect the backside of your rug and to protect your flooring. Make sure you inform your rug specialist if you plan to display your rug on top of a carpeted area, hard wood floors, tile or linoleum since different carpet pads are often used depending on the surface on which they will be displayed.

When looking for an antique rug, make sure you inspect it thoroughly and check for any repairs that may be needed before purchasing. Some antique rugs have unique characteristics and should be displayed in their natural condition. If you are uncertain whether or not the rug you inherited is an antique, you may contact a reputable rug gallery, send them pictures of the front and back of your rug and they will be able to help suggest its age and potentially its value, or they will put you in touch with a reputable antique rug appraiser. Please stop by and visit one of our reputable and trusted Oriental rug galleries. They are happy to answer any questions you may have and will offer their expert advice on how to help you decide which rug is best for you and your home. HFM

Contemporary design is a dynamic mix of eclecticism and personal expression. Simplicity reigns in this design style. Most furniture tends to be European scaled with lower seating and back heights, which intentionally opens up the space for continuity in form, shape, function and design. In a contemporary environment, glass is also one of the predominant staples used. Objects need to appear light and should bring light into a room. This is achieved with the use of glass tops, mirrors and simplistic open spaces. Contemporary design is so diverse that many people often confuse the varying degrees of contemporary styles. Here are four main distinctions inspired by contemporary home décor:

Modern Classics are vintage designs dating back to the forties and fifties. Here is where you will find all of those beloved retro designs that have withstood the test of time.

Minimalism prefers clean, sharp lines with stark colors in monochromatic settings. Chic and sleek designs in bold hues are commonly used in minimalistic contemporary designs.

Urban Living focuses on bringing new life to the old. It relishes in the “upcycled” look, which preserves and reuses our earth’s natural elements of environmental woods, industrial scrap metals, reclaimed glass, organic teak, and authentic (or faux) animal furs.

Fun and Funky gives a folk art twist to contemporary. Bright and vibrant colors uncover an eclectic edge which is inspired by non-conformist self expression and originality. Textured accent pieces are combined with rich furniture designs in this unique style.

The mixing of heavy metals in gold, bronze, silver, platinum, brass, chrome and aluminum complement today’s contemporary interiors and continue to appeal to a wide demographic. Recently the use of crystals woven into rugs, barstools and beds has become quite popular. Oversized floral designs strategically

placed throughout the home make the perfect statement pieces. Wall coverings consisting of large scale unframed painted canvases give the perception of fine art, while luxurious wall panels in 3D designs and unique wallpaper patterns based on photo print imagery are truly realistic and provide stunning accent wall designs. Textured leather wall tiles with decorative paneling and fabric covered surfaces make dramatic visual statements throughout your home.

Contemporary styles are so varied that anyone can experiment with either a small dose or a generous amount in one’s home. Reflections Home Furnishings offers a wide array of contemporary designs and styles. They are happy to help you decide which pieces best reflect your contemporary personality and lifestyle. HFM

A new baby in the house on average results in 400-750 hours of lost sleep for parents in the first year, that’s up to 2 hours less per night.

Just as some people talk in their sleep, sign language speakers have a tendency to sign in their sleep.

You can only dream about faces you have already seen.

Elephants sleep standing up during non-REM sleep, but lie down during REM sleep.

We tend to sleep a few minutes less per night around a full moon.

Blind people often have trouble with sleep because daylight is so important to regulating a person’s circadian rhythms.

Humans might be one of the only species that can’t keep half of their brain awake. The brain hemispheres in dolphins and whales take turns so they can continue surfacing to breathe.

You strengthen memories made during the day while you sleep. During REM sleep your brain determines what information is most important to store for future use, so sleeping directly after learning something new will improve your ability to remember it effectively.

You burn more calories watching TV than you do while you’re sleeping.

Snoring only occurs in non-REM sleep.

Some animals need to wake up from hibernation to actually get restful sleep.

Twelve percent of people have black and white dreams. Before color television, this number was 75 percent.

Women who sleep less than 5 hours a night gain a significant amount more weight over time than those who sleep 7 hours or more.

Anything less than 5 minutes to fall asleep at night means you are sleep deprived. 10-15 minutes is the healthy average.

People can take cap naps with their eyes wide open without themselves or others even being aware of it.

The average person spends six years of their life dreaming.

As it relates to insomnia following bereavement, sleeping pills can severely disrupt a healthy grieving process.

When you die you will have slept approximately 1/3 of your life, which for the average person is approximately 25 years.

The Exxon Valdez oil spill off Alaska, the Challenger space shuttle disaster and the Chernobyl nuclear accident have all been attributed to human errors in which sleep deprivation played a role.

Our expert bedding specialists inside Sleep to Live Gallery by Good’s Home Furnishings are here to help you select the proper mattress for your specific body type. Stop by and see how they can help you recapture countless nights of restful sleep for you and your family. HFM

Homeowners continue to look for new ways to enhance and expand their outdoor environments. More space is being dedicated to cultivating a home’s natural settings for the purpose of entertaining their guests outdoors and providing personal retreats for themselves and their family. When people are at home they want to relax and feel comfortable and they want their guests to be comfortable too. They want their space to reflect their own personal taste and style and provide a peaceful and enjoyable surrounding for their visitors.

Outdoor kitchens have become increasingly popular as most installations are fairly simple and don’t take up a large amount of space. Traditional indoor dining areas have made their way outdoors and are being replaced with large, simple, yet functional outdoor dining tables accompanied by deep casual seating. Chat height fire pits are quickly replacing cocktail tables. They are just the

right height for people to pull up a chair, dine off of, all while chatting with guests around a warm and cozy fire. Nothing does a better job of transforming a backyard than a fireplace. They provide an inviting ambiance for outdoor gatherings, offer additional lighting and warmth, which allows outdoor entertaining to be extended further into the next season. Outdoor pools with customizable options such as waterfalls, fountain bubblers, fire bowls, tanning shelves and extended steps are some of the most popular items being requested today.

If you cannot afford to create a new space or expand your existing space by adding an outdoor kitchen, fireplace or pool, replacing your outdoor furniture cushions will definitely liven up the pieces you currently have and create an entirely new look. There are a number of other items you can add to your outdoor living area at a reasonable cost. Just make sure all of your outdoor items are made of weather resistant

materials to withstand the elements. Although it may be tempting to purchase inexpensive furniture, quality is even more important outdoors because your furniture must be able to withstand the natural elements.

Buying lesser quality furniture every 2-3 years will quickly add up so you should consider your investment wisely.

THROW PILLOWS AND AREA RUGSBy adding throw pillows and area rugs in soft weather resistant materials and by pairing bold colors and patterns alongside neutrals, you’ll bring color and comfort to any outdoor space, large or small. Don’t be afraid to select colors or patterns that pull from your home’s interior, which provides fluidity and continuity throughout your entire home.

MIRRORSMirrors placed outside are fun and unexpected and can create the illusion of a window. They

are also great for reflecting sunlight and scenery within your landscape. An outdoor mirror can make a smaller area look much larger.

LIGHTINGOutdoor lighting options have increased tremendously over the past few years. There are now multiple options for overhead chandeliers, which can be mounted and placed above your outdoor dining area, table lamps, floor lamps, light fixtures and various ceiling fans.

CANDLESCandles provide a soft warm glow without the need for electricity. If you’re concerned about safely, flameless candles are also available. Candles placed inside decorative lanterns are a unique way to light up pathways or outline stairs and uneven elevations. They are easy to move to any desired location and can drastically change the look of your space at a minimal cost.

ACCENT FURNITUREGarden stools, ottomans and various side tables all provide versatile options. They are easy to move around as needed and not only look great, but provide additional seating options and an additional space for guests to place their food or beverages on.

ARTWORKArt and wall hangings add character and personality to any space. Clocks, paintings,

sculptures and frames help finish a room and give the illusion of an interior wall outdoors.

PLANTERS AND URNSThese accent pieces are multifunctional. They can add color and décor to your outdoor space or define a main entrance or walking path. They can also emphasize a change in elevation or hide any unpleasant areas.

CURTAINS AND DRAPERYCurtains and drapery are perfect for dividing your outdoor space in addition to offering shade from the sun and privacy from your neighbors. Use subtle, calming fabrics to incorporate

serenity into a space or bold, statement fabrics to make an area more pronounced.

STORAGE BENCHESStorage benches provide

additional seating for dinner parties and extra storage space for your gardening tools, guest towels, blankets and pillows. You can also

strategically place a cooler with

ice inside to chill

your favorite beverages during any outdoor celebration.

OUTDOOR SHELVINGAn outdoor shelf takes up a limited amount of space and allows for additional storage outside. Shelves offer a handy way to keep pool towels within reach. They also provide a convenient spot for guests to place their jewelry, glasses and wallets on before jumping into the pool for a quick swim.

SWINGS, HAMMOCKS AND ROCKING CHAIRSWhether you prefer a cool casual swing with comfy upholstered cushions, a fun and frivolous hammock or a traditional rocking chair, every outdoor area should offer a carefree lounging area where you can curl up with a good book or unwind with that special someone.

Season’s Outdoor and Sunroom Gallery by Hickory Park, located on Level 3 offers a vast selection of outdoor furniture options. Ask inside each showroom about their current outdoor offerings. Remember to order your outdoor furniture far enough in advance. If you are not purchasing off the floor, you should allow at least 90 days to make sure your furniture arrives when needed. HFM

Jaye Spierer, owner of Resource Design and seasoned fabric expert shares her insights on some commonly asked questions related to fabric:

Why are some fabrics more expensive than others? “There is so much that goes into the production of a good, high-quality fabric. The furniture industry uses the term “double rubs” to describe how a fabric will hold up. 25,000 double rubs is considered a nice heavy duty fabric and is recommended for pieces that will be used daily by families with children. Then there is the make-up of the material itself. For instance, particular wool is only sheared from sheep once every three years. You probably have noticed that silks are generally more expensive than many other fabrics. This is because silk is obtained from the silkworm and there is a long and labor intensive process involved in its collection. But the most

expensive fabrics are truly works of art designed by artists themselves, which take on an original three dimensional look. These materials are unique and expressive and offer a combination of fabrics, decorative patterns and sometimes even ornamental fragments throughout the piece.”

What are your favorite uses for velvets, linens and silks? “Velvets often ignite passion and elegance throughout a room. When mixed with linen, velvet also infuses an element of richness that is not readily apparent with other fabric combinations. I love placing velvet on side chairs, headboards and pillows. Linen is ideal for window treatments and is also commonly used as an optimal blend for sofas. Silks add luster and personality to a room like nothing else. Look for remnants of silk woven into rugs, draperies, bedding and pillows to enrich your space and add personality and charm to your home décor.”

Is it wise to buy fabric on the internet? “With countless selections of quality fabrics available inside reputable fabric and design work

rooms, it is better not to take the chance of buying fabrics online from an unknown dealer. Lesser quality fabrics may arrive streaked, frayed or the dye lots may not match. It is always best to work with a trustworthy resource in the industry so that if any problems do occur when ordering your fabric, you are able to resolve these issues quickly and efficiently through your established fabric professional.”

Resource Design has been one of the industry’s most reputable and trusted fabric and design work rooms for over 35 years. Stop by and meet with their distinguished team during your next visit to discuss any of your custom fabric needs.

ANGIE CLINE (FLORIDA)“My absolute favorite things about Hickory Furniture Mart? There are so many.”

Designer Friendly: “Hickory Furniture Mart makes sure a designer and their client are able to visit the Mart together and have access to all of their incredible design resources.

They even offer a private design consultation room where you can work with your client during your entire visit. Out of state design clients furnishing a whole home are also offered overnight accommodations during their visit. This helps save on their overall budget and allows them to ultimately purchase more furniture for their home.”

Convenient: “By having our clients meet us at Hickory Furniture Mart we are able to include them in the process and offer them a better overall design service. They love the convenience of having thousands of resources immediately at their disposal. We are able to touch, feel, and view actual pieces that we will be ordering for them versus the alternative of only looking at photos from a catalog. Most people are “visual” and appreciate the opportunity to see the furnishings in person before placing their orders.”

Pricing: “Hickory Furniture Mart showrooms deal in such immense volume with their manufacturers and clientele that they extend their bulk pricing discounts to everyone who places an order within the Mart. Many of their manufacturers are based in the region, which cuts out the middle man and extends their deepest discounts directly to the designer and their customers.”

Phenomenal Sales Staff: “Hickory Furniture Mart has some of the most knowledgeable and seasoned sales and design associates within the furniture industry. They go through constant training with their manufactures in order to know about the newest designs and custom features for each product line offered. As a designer, this tool is invaluable.”

The Word “No” is Not in Their Vocabulary: “We have had some extremely challenging requests from our national and international clientele; whether it be a client wanting custom hot pink alligator lacquer furniture or their request to come into the Mart earlier or later than normal operating hours in order to accommodate their demanding schedules. The sales associates and management team at Hickory Furniture Mart always go above and beyond to make sure that all designer and client requests are addressed and handled prior to, during and after every visit we make to the Mart. They make us feel like part of the family and they make us look good in front of our customers, which is why we keep coming back.”

ANDREW LIMONE (NEW JERSEY)

“It has been my greatest pleasure to take all of my design students and VIP clients shopping for their home furnishings at Hickory Furniture Mart. My groups and I have been coming to the

Mart for over 15 years now and many of my design students end up returning on their own after they’ve experienced their initial trip with my guidance.”

“We have always experienced such professional assistance from all of the design and sales associates inside the Mart. They are courteous, friendly and very reliable.”

“What are some of my favorite things about Hickory Furniture Mart?“

Quality: “The amount of quality furniture available inside the Mart is remarkable.”

Options: “The sheer amount of furniture options presented under one roof is incredible and so significant to me as a designer. In just a few days, I am able to furnish entire homes for my clients, all with different personalities and preferences. My design students, clients and I plan to make several more visits to the Mart over the next 15 years.”

“We have all made lifelong friendships there and we look forward to each new endeavor and return trip to Hickory for our furniture needs.”

KATE GLADCHUN (MICHIGAN)

“What are my favorite things about the Mart? Just about everything.”

I love the smell. “The smell of furniture, fabric, leathers, the restaurant, the coffeehouse and of course, that southern

pine scent when you step outside. It makes me feel welcome and at home.”

I love the sights. “The latest styles and trends, the creative vignettes, the new designs, the unusual accents (A mirror made out of teak roots? Really? How cool is that?). A feast for my eyes and mind and just the fuel that I need for my latest design adventure.”

I love the touch. “The feel of the woods – smooth, rough, waxy, raw, painted, stained; the hand of the fabrics – silky, textured, smooth, comforting, soft, embroidered, weaved and blended; the touch of the glass; the pull of the doors; the gliding of the

drawers. Imagining all of these sensations in another place in someone’s home.”

I love the taste. “The restaurant and the coffeehouse – to replenish me when I’ve overdosed on everything else. That great big bite of renewed energy to keep me going for the rest of the day.”

I love the sounds. “That soft southern drawl: ‘Well, hello Miss Kate. Good to see you again.’ The sounds of the people so truly happy to help.”

I love the surprises. “A new showroom, a new location, a new twist, a new product, a new idea for me to take home and incorporate into my own world.”

“I’ve estimated that I have visited the Hickory Furniture Mart, as a customer, probably more than any other person in this country (who lives outside of North Carolina). At least, I’d like to think that.”

“I’m always happy when I’m there and I hate it when it’s closing time and I just haven’t seen enough, smelled enough, touched enough, tasted enough or heard enough. It’s what always brings me back. I love this place.”

KIMBERLY CAUSEY (GEORGIA)

“Hickory Furniture Mart has so many of my favorite things all in one place.”

American-Made Furniture: “Americans make the best furniture in the world. Hickory Furniture Mart carries the widest selection of American-Made furniture in one location: Century Furniture, Classic

Leather, Hickory Chair, Harden Furniture, Flexsteel, Hancock & Moore, Leathercraft, Vanguard, Hickory White, Sherrill Furniture and hundreds more.”

Quality Construction: “Nothing beats eight-way hand-tied springs, hardwood frames, and multi-step hand rubbed finishes.”

Style Choices: “You will find every style you can imagine represented: contemporary, transitional, traditional, Italian, Scandinavian, Mission, lodge, mid-century modern, and all the varieties in between.” Great Service Even After the Sale: “Your fine furniture experience isn’t over until your furniture is in your home, and in perfect condition. At Hickory Furniture Mart, you’ll work with quality sales and design associates to help you manage your furniture purchase from start to finish, including delivery, set up and exceptional customer service throughout the entire process.”

The durability and selection of color options available in leather furniture today make it a popular choice for many homeowners. Jason Dunn of Leather and More shares his expertise on the ins and outs of making sure you end up with the right leather product for your lifestyle.

What is the difference between top grain and split hides?“Well there is a big difference. First let me start with the hides themselves. A hide from cattle is so thick that you can shave several layers of leather from one hide. The top cutting is the most desirable cut. From that top cut, you are able to make either a top grain leather or a full grain leather. Top grain is made to have a more uniform look with the color having a much closer match from hide to hide. Full grain is for those people that want the natural look of leather. With a full grain, you have to then choose either a wax pull up, which is going to have a more weathered and distressed look or an oil pull up. The oil pull up is going to have less distress marks, but is going to give a customer a very soft feel (the hand of leather). We like to compare it to an old baseball glove. But a split hide is different from all of this. As I said, you can pull many different layers from one hide. The top cutting is going to be the best. Those cuts can be dyed. The second, third, and maybe forth cuttings of a hide are called splits. Yes, splits are still leather but don’t have the same feel or durability as the top cutting. In addition, splits cannot be dyed. All splits need to be painted.”

What is the difference between pigmented leathers and dyed leather?“Pigmented leather has been painted to be a certain color. This type of leather is great for preventing stains. You will see this type of leather used in hospitals and similar high traffic environments. However, this leather does not always have the softest feel to it. The next

level up would be a semi aniline leather. This leather has been drum dyed a certain color and then has a slight layer of pigment on top to help with its color consistency. This type of leather is also ideal for preventing stains. The slight layer of pigment will help fluids from getting into the hides. The last is a dyed leather. This is still natural leather. They take a hide and dye it to the color of choice and then either finish it with an oil base or a wax base. This goes back to what we talked about before (regarding the full grain type of leather). The wax or oil is there to protect the leather from everyday use, but it still gives the leather its authentic feel and look.”

What if I have children and or animals? What is the best type of leather for me?“Well let me speak from my own personal experience. I have three kids, two large dogs, and three cats. There is nothing besides leather that I would place in my house. I am asked that question often and it is a big concern for many people. However, if we know what your expectation of the product is, then we are able to suggest the right type of leather for you. A top grain or a full grain leather will stand up against puncturing better than most fabrics. A top grain or a full grain leather will also help with ease of cleaning in comparison to just about any other fabric. Let’s face it, almost all dogs and cats shed. With fabric sofas, you are spending a lot more time vacuuming to remove the hair versus just having to wipe off the hair on a leather sofa. Many people that suffer from allergies

opt for leather because it is just so much easier to keep clean, including spills from young children. In saying this, what leather is the best? It really depends on what you are looking for based on your current lifestyle. Top grain leather will offer protection against spills, while full grain leather will ease the marks of pet claws.”

Leather seems to either feel too hot or too cold. Why? “People tell me all the time “I don’t know if I want leather. It seems to be too hot or too cold all the time.” At that point, I usually ask them “Do you have leather in your home?” An overwhelming percentage of those people do not even have leather in their homes or they admit that the leather they do have is a more inexpensive version of leather, such as bonded or split. Well of course, those products will most likely be either too hot or too cold. They cannot breathe. A top grain leather or a full grain leather has pores that allow the leather to adjust to your own body temperature. I always compare it to a car seat — almost all leather on car seats is painted. It has to be painted in order to meet federal safety rules, but because of this it cannot breathe. So when you sit in a car in January, the seats are very cold and take a much longer time to adjust to the correct temperature than if the seats where porous. The same is true with the heat in the middle of August. It is going be very hot and uncomfortable because the leather cannot breathe. It’s just that simple.” HFM

Hickory Furniture Mart has been well-known for over 50 years as one of North Carolina’s most incredible furniture resources and international travel destinations. The Mart offers a unique mix of first line showrooms (where custom furniture is available to order for any preference), galleries (special sections devoted to specific manufacturers), outlets (where discounted product is offered immediately “as is” off the showroom floor) and factory direct outlets (where special product is brought in directly from the manufacturers’ factories and also available immediately and sold off the floor “as is”).

Typical outlet savings range from 65-80 percent off normal retail prices. Most outlet product consists of retail showroom samples, overruns, closeouts, one of a kind High Point Market samples and custom orders that retailers have canceled or customers have returned for various reasons. New outlet product arrives direct from factories and retail showrooms daily so outlet inventories are constantly changing. If you find something you seriously want in an outlet, it is best to secure your purchase right away since most outlets are not able to hold product and sales are offered on a first come, first serve basis.

Once an item is purchased in an outlet, it is rare that the same exact piece will be offered again. Most customers end up mixing and matching outlet items with custom product when furnishing their homes. The savings you can find on a piece of furniture inside an outlet will allow you to invest a little more in that custom fabric you’ll need to place on another piece you saw in a retail showroom that you just cannot live without. And as an additional perk, you are able to take outlet product home with you immediately.

If you find out that you will be entertaining family at the last minute and need to furnish that spare room, an outlet is the perfect place to pick up any additional items you may need in a short period of time.

We have received several visits from customers who have experienced a natural disaster in their hometowns. They need furniture immediately and most of their local resources are typically backlogged with so much unexpected demand. Many of our outlets and retail showrooms will work together with victims and offer additional discounts with requested expedited delivery for entire communities affected by these types of

disasters. Outlet product is also great for rental properties or second homes as you are able to furnish more rooms for much less.

Stop by and visit all of the outlets and showrooms inside Hickory Furniture Mart and take advantage of the tremendous selection and savings available throughout the entire Mart. HFM
