Scientific name: Monodora myristica Common names: Guinea pepper, Negro pepper, Ethiopian pepper etc. Common name: Calabash nutmeg Family: Annonaceae Description: Tree or shrub 3.6-30m tall, with trunk up to 1m in diameter fissured at the base, bark grey, vertically corrugated with rounded ridges. Habit: A tropical shrub of the Annonacece or custard apple family of flowering plants. Active ingredients: Uses: Used as spice and condiment. The root is chewed to relieve toothaches and athritis. The seeds are used to relieve anemia, haemorrhids, sexual weakness, and wounds.

Scientific name: Piper guineense Common names: Black pepper, Guinea cubebs Local names: Soro wusa, Sesaa, (Ewe)-Atsinkali Family name: Piperaceae Description: A climber up to 12m high on tress, climbing by means of adventitious rootlets etc. Habitat: It occurs in closed forests on trees in forest clearings. Parts used: seeds, leaf, twig. Chemical constituents: Volatile oil; alkaloids: piperine, wisanine dihydrowisanine, dihydropiperine and related alkaloids; resin, lignans-dihydrocubebin, sesamin, aschantin.

Uses: for the treatment of coughs, bronchitis and rheumatism; the powdered drug is insect repellant and insecticidal; fruit as spice. Antiviral used in confectionery. NB: There are two varieties. The one collected from the wild is Piper guineense while the cultivated type is Piper nigrum which is accepted mostly in the international market as spice.

Its matured dried fruit and seeds are sold in the markets. Chemical constituents: Oleo-resins (volatile oil contains paradols, gingerols and shogaols). Uses: it is an aromatic stimulant; for treatment of coughs and bronchitis; anti-rheumatic; for dyspepsia; also used as an adjuvant. Used in Japan as aphrodisiac.

Habitat: It is a forest shrub and is cultivated on farms. It has two seasons. Part used: Fruit

Active ingredient: Active glycoprotein molecule, with some tailing carbohydrates chains called Miraculin.

Uses: Masks the taste of bitter medicines, fermented beverages, citrus fruit juices,

dairy products. Flavour enhancement applied as substitute for sucrose.

Scientific name: Carissa edulis Common name: Simple-spine Carissa Family: Apocynaceace Description: It is a spiny, much branched, small tree, shrub or scrambler, up to 5m length with a milky sap. Habitat: It is found throughout tropical Africa. Part used: Root Active Ingredient: Carissin (Twigs) contain quebrachytol and cardioglycosides that are useful as an anthelmintic against tapeworm. Uses: Useful in the treatment of cancer, also for glandular inflammation, veneral diseases, to restore virility, to treat gastric ulcers, and as a expectorant, For treating Malaria, For the treatment of headache, chest complains, Gonorrhea, Syphilis and as a diuretic (rheumatism). It has antiviral activities and at the same time aphrodisiac.

Scientific: Pycnanthus angolensis Common name: African nutmeg, kombo Local name: Otie Family name: Myristicaceae Description: A tree that reaches a height of about 100m, bole straight, cylindrical, sometimes with a swollen base or root swellings. Habitat: It is found in rain forest, transitional and secondary formations. Part used: seed, bark, fluid. Active ingredients: Cethyl Myristoleic Acid (CMO) and Kombic acid.

Uses: Anti analgesic, Antioxidant. Relieves pain and disability of people who suffer from Arthritis. Myristoleic acid lubricates joints and entire body. It also functions as immune system modulator. Effective in controlling autoimmune diseases. It mediates inflammatory processes. Applied in cosmetic industry.

Habitat: it is cultivated on farms in E/R, Brong Ahafo and neighbouring, Cot d' Ivoire. Part used: Seed Active ingredient: Bixin Uses: It is a flavouring agent. Used as food colour in butter, cheese, margarine, chocolate, smoked fish and pastry.

WHITE’S GINGER

Scientific name: Mondia Whitei Common name: white's ginger, tonic root Local name: Asase hwam Family name: Periplocaceae (Apocynaceae) Description: it is a perennial, woody, rather robust and vigorous climber that grows from a large tuberous rootstock. The roots are aromatic and apparently taste like ginger or liquorice etc. Habit: it is found in coastlands and midlands and of dry forests. Part used: roots and leaves.

Active ingredients: Vitamins A, D, K and E, and minerals: magnesium, iron, zinc, calcium and protein. Uses: Used as an antacid and to treat indigestion. It is tonic to stimulate appetite. It is used for the treatment of anorexia and bilharzia. Fits in children and stress and tension in adults are apparently also treated with Mondia whitei. The roots are an aphrodisiac and for the treatment of erectile dysfunction and impotence.Grounded roots used in making tea that is used in treatment of general pains and aches. The dried leaves, powdered and mixed with food and taken daily as supplement. Other uses include the treatment of hypertension, stroke, anemia, asthma, hangover, mastitis and allergies. It is also taken to improve sleep, enhance urination, ease birth pains and as mouth refresher and toothbrush. The leaves serve as animal fodder and are consumed by humans as vegetables. The bitter tasting roots have a vanilla odour and sweet aftertaste and are used to make a beverage similar to ginger beer. In West Africa, the roots are used to make an energizing drink for wedding parties when the roots are brewed in alcohol. It is a spice as well. Its also for the treatment of urinary tract infections.
