  An update from our

“fearless leader”

Ed Heinlein

Vivian and I are recovering nicely from our recent surgeries. Just takes time, I guess. But, aftertalking with Ted Atkins a few times this month, we can count our blessings!

My dear Stanford lost to OSU at the Fiesta Bowl on January 2 following a brilliant driveorchestrated by our QB, Andrew Luck. With 3 seconds left, our kicker missed a field goal whichwould have won the game; we lost in the first OT when the same guy missed an even shorter fieldgoal. And, I lost a bet (which I had proposed) to my nieces and nephews, all of whom are alumniand/or staunch supporters or the OSU Cowboys. I had to wear an OSU cap all the waking hoursof the next day AND send a picture of me wearing it in a prominent location on the Stanfordcampus. Well, I paid up, but the youngsters learned that old LSHS grads can be kinda tricky. AsI told them, “He who makes the rules may interpret the rules.” The pic on the left is my payment;

on the right, my revenge.

Scholarship Update

We have increased the amount of the Award for 2012 to $1,500 (up from the $1,000 we havegiven the past seven years.) This, we reasoned, will make the Scholarship more even meaningfuland make The Class’s contributions (and those of our many friends) even more appreciated.Amazing to realize that $1,500 was about two-thirds the total cost of my first year of college, including room, board, tuition, books and fees. Now it covers, maybe, books and a small pizza!

We currently have change over $31,000 in the Fund. We plan to mount an aggressive donationcampaign this year with an eye toward making our Scholarship even more secure. I am confident

the memory of the Class of 1957 and Paul Coverdell will shine for many years to come. (TheStatler Brothers might just have to add another verse to OUR song!)

One of our ongoing fund raising efforts is “Club 57”. This is the moniker we have chosen in aneffort to encourage annual donations of $57.00. (That’s just about a dime, a nickel and a penny aday, or $4.75 a month.) Of course, any contribution is greatly appreciated. More soon about thedrive. Don’t wait for that, though! LOL. (I just re-upped for this year.)

See you in June!

  From Sharon’s Kitchen . . .

It’s Super Bowl time again and, although we don’t yet know who’s “in”, we

know some of the teams that are “out” (most of my favorites— the Chiefs,

Tony Gonzales and the Falcons,…). Aaron Rogers and The Packers deserve

a spot. I think I’ll order my “cheese head.” So, here are some good game-

day munchies. You won’t miss a single play standing at the stove frying wings —they’re baked. The chicken wings are coated in a sweet, Asian-style

sauce, then oven-baked until they’re tender and caramelized. The BLT Dip

is everything you love about a classic BLT in a hot bubbly dip. (Sharon)

BAKED CHICKEN WINGS

3 lbs. chicken wings (disjointed, tipsdiscarded)

Place soy sauce in a small saucepan and whisk in cornstarch until dissolved. Whisk in theremaining ingredients. Heat on medium-low until the sauce is thickened.

From the Lee’s Summit Journal   Thursday, Dec. 22 2011 12:37PM

Five new LSHS Hall of Fame inductees selected

By Rob Roberts, [email protected]

The five Lee’s Summit High School alumni to be inducted into the school’s Hall of Fame in April have

been selected. The new inductees are:

- Mike Nill, class of 1982, current executive vice president and chief operating officer for Cerner Corp.

- Dale Hartley, class of 1944, a local businessman and community leader who became instrumental in

reviving downtown Lee’s Summit after joining the family business, Hartley’s Furniture, in 1954

- Bessie Chittwood, class of 1938, a teacher in the Raytown School District from 1963 to 1981

According to Chad Hertzog, an LSHS assistant principal, the new inductees will increase the number of

Hall of Fame members to 81. The high school has been inducting distinguished graduates into the hall

for 16 years. About five alumni are inducted during a dinner ceremony each year, and plaques

featuring the honorees are displayed on a “wall of fame” at the high school.

The LSHS Hall of Fame inductees are selected by a committee and graduates and staff. Alumni

become eligible for selection 10 years after graduation.

As most of you may know, the Class of 1957 has TWO members that have been inducted

into the Hall of Fame . . . three if you count Mr. Brockman, Honorary Member Class of

1957.

1997-1998

And again from LuAnn on the same day . . .

I finished the quilts in time for Christmas, but forgot to send you a photo in time for the Newsletter! The vintage camera quilt is for my grandson, Ryan, who is a Junior film student at NYU and the Texanquilt is for his brother, Jon, Notre Dame grad with a degree in electrical engineering, who works for HP

computer. Jon also is a MMA fighter (Ugh) and a weightlifting champ. If you check YouTube and searchfor Jon Thibeault, you can see him lift and jerk 300 pounds over his head!

And this from Louise (Bernard ’59) Hobbs, sister of our ’57 classmate Shirlene Bernard,

after reading the Dec ’11 NL . . .

Thanks so much for my Christmas "gift" of a visit with several of my "school family"....loved tohear from them! You are all so special to me - may each of our "families" be blessed with allgood things in 2012.  Louise Hobbs - 1959

Margaret (Davis) Offen sends us a report of her very Merry Christmas . . .

Hope you all had a wonderful anniversary (Carl and I celebrated our 53rd

anniversary on Dec.

27th

) and Christmas. Friday was our 31 anniversary. Seems like only yesterday we met and

married. Been a fast 31 years.

Both of my sons were here with their daughters. Russ (oldest) got in Friday then Saturday Rick met us at

Ameristar for our regular Saturday brunch and we all had brunch together, then we went in for awhile

and gambled. Amanda and Lily messed around until we got through. Sunday we were all together and

Rick had to have Lily at her Moms at 5:00 so he left and the rest of us played Wii bowling until almostmidnight. It was so much fun. Amanda and Russ left around 10:30 on Monday and got home around

5:00 last night. Sure hated to see them go but we had a great time while they were here. Amanda is

going through a rough time with her parents being separated but she will get through it in time.

We are not doing anything New Year’s Eve that I know of. Hope each and every one of you have the

best 2012 ever. Enjoy each day for we don't know what tomorrow is going to bring. Will talk to you

soon. Margaret

Pat (Damsgard) Hoglund has volunteered over the past several years to act as “card lady”

for our Chatters group, sending birthday, anniversary, get well, and sympathy cards fromour group … and lately has started including the entire class. After sending Pat Graham a

card of sympathy on the death of her husband, she received a thank you note back. Shehas forwarded this to me, saying: “M, thought you might want to include this in the NL as it’sreally to the whole Class” … so here is the thank you to the Class from Pat Graham , via Pat

Hoglund . . .

Dear Pat and Loren, Thank you so much for your prayers and support. Please let everyoneknow how much I appreciate them. My son and his family are keeping me busy and occupied. My wish for all at LSHS ’57 is for Happy Holidays and a Happy New Year. Sincerely,

Pat Graham

Change of address from Karen Winterowd . . .

Hi Marilyn - Glad you reminded me of one more group to notify of address change! 63 Mescalero Tr.,Santa Fe, NM 87505 (Kris' address but you don't have to put in care of) (505) 670-9775, my cell &

Sandy's is (505) 660-2045. We have been in South Padre Island since the 17th of Dec., weathered some

cool temps & wind but bask in the warm temps & love it. I have a tiny, tiny yard on our site that I have

seeded & developed a flower bed that is quite nice. I've always enjoyed developing my flower beds &

now from zero-scaping to the semi-tropical w/a little more water. Silly but pleasurable things to talk

about in early January! xo Karen

Health Updates

Jan.6, 2012, from “Little Jim” Brockman . . .

Hi, I am writing for my dad who does not use a computer. He wanted me to thank everyone for all of the Christmas

cards and phone calls he has received during this holiday season. Our family was with him for Christmas and we hada great time together. He still loves to tell stories about LSHS and his students. The day after we left Arizona my dadwas taken to the emergency room with chest pains. He has now been moved to a rehab facility as he is very weak inhis lower body. He will be moved tomorrow to the Grandview Terrace assisted living facility which is across the streetfrom his apartment. He asked me to ask all of you for some "knee time" for him. I will let you know of his progress.

Jim BrockmanClass of 1960

After sending the above note from Jim out via email, I received the following back from one of our

Arizona classmates, Bob Hoke . . . Jan.9th

Marilyn, I went to see Jim Brockman yesterday at the Boswell Hospital Rehab Center. I was just leaving the nursesinfo center when I looked up and Jim was standing there. He had been walking the halls, had seen me and headed

my way. We went to his room where we talked for almost an hour about the old days at LSHS. What a time we hadand the memories that surfaced for both of us. His mind is still sharp as a tack although at 95 the body is growingweak. As soon as they get his blood pressure stabilized he will return to his home at Grandview Terrace in Sun CityWest. He said where he is at now is like being in jail! We prayed together, talked about the Lord and how good Hehas been to both of us. Jim is right with God and strong in his faith in Jesus Christ so to him " to be absent from thebody is to be present with the Lord". Jim is still a good example to all of us! He also said he had received many, many cards from mostly '57 grads and how that they had blessed him.

We leave again Jan. 25th for a month in Kenya. Check out the new DVD on our ministry website. The dorm girls’

testimonies will grab your heart strings. In Him, Bob http://www.mercyinactionintl.org/Video.html

If you would like to send Mr. B a card, here is his mailing address:

14515 W. Granite Valley Drive, E370, Sun City West, AZ 85375.

I know he’d LOVE hearing from you!

Jan. 13, 2012, an update on Cason from LuAnn (Mrs. Jack ’58) Smith . . .

Cason is now being seen by a neurologist here in Houston rather than Dallas. It has been determinedthat he is having 4 different types of seizures and has to wear a specially made helmet to protect hishead. He will now have more testing done to determine if his condition is operable and also see adietician. It takes such a long time to get appointments, so he is scheduled for testing in March. Casonnow attends Early Childhood Development classes through the public school system where they live. Iappreciate everyone for their thoughts and prayers for this cute little boy and his parents (Chad andHeather), who have had to endure so much.

Here is a photo of the great-grandchildren:Cason Leslie Wilson, age 3, Hadley J'Ann Wilson, 9 months, and Charles Rendall Wilson, 6. LuAnn

Jan. 14th

from Ted Atkins . . .

Hi all...

I had a call early this morning (6am San Jose time) from Ed. Wanted to know if I had any ideaon how to contact the Statler Brothers. Remember them? A '65 big pop hit "Flowers onthe Wall" but they were mostly a country quartet along with gospel. Had their own TV show forseveral years going back 10 years or so. Anyway, Ed wants to make contact to get them toautograph one of their album covers or a concert poster to place in the Class of '57 display atLSHS (didn't know there was one). One of their big hits, "The Class of '57" is our Class themesong Ed says. I think it's a great, but I wasn't able to help him out. Ironically, the Statlers areone of my favorite groups and only Friday I was playing one of their cassettes to hear one of my favorites by them, "Elizabeth." Ed was going to try information for the group in Stauton,

VA, their old, and maybe current, home base. Interesting project.

Coldest day of winter so far today with about 3 inches of snow. Can't complain, really. A verymild season thus far. Depending on my various doctor's OKs Karen and I plan on cruising in

early March. Probably a last minute booking worked around my frequent hospital and doctortests. They say you can often get a super deal if you're prepared to move fast which we canbe. There's even a new airline that flies out of Latrobe, Pa (30 miles away) that offers a $39fare (believe it or not) to Ft. Lauderdale where we want to sail from on the Oasis of the Seas(Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines). Guess we'll see.

Just finished my 5th and, for now, last radiation treatment. They actually had me in a shrink-wrapped shell each time so that I was in exactly the same position for each treatment. Haven'tturned green yet but Karen says I do glow a bit. My main doctor/surgeon this week walked inand, not having seen me since before Thanksgiving, said he was shocked at how good I lookedand that I was definitely stronger and had my color back. After trying for months to put someweight back on I was happy to note a 5 pound gain these past two weeks. Thank you Lord.

Not to beat the hypochondriac horse much further I'll end by mentioning my upcoming dentalsurgery (when it rains it pours) on the 25th. A hospital stay to extract 8 teeth (I had ignoredmy dental needs with everything else going on this past year). It'll be done in a hospital by theChair. of the Univ. of Pittsburgh Dental School. His program is world-renowned so I'm in verygood hands. Had to get all doctors involved with me to agree to this and the timetable becauseof my weak immune system and the risk of infection. After everything else this seems to me apiece of cake. Hopefully, with icing. I'll be gumming it for awhile. Maybe I'll just drink toexcess.

When I first started my radiation they had to put me under to insert a couple of target gizmos

in my liver. Karen was beside me in the elevator when I was on my way up to the OR. I waspretty groggy and, sensing the elevator rising, for a minute I actually thought I'd died and wasgoing up to heaven. Karen said not to worry...if I really had died I'd be going the otherway. Don't cha love her?

Have a great winter wherever you are. Luv ya. Ted

You hear me talking about putting the names of my friends/family that are ill in my “God

Can”  but I don’t think I’ve ever told you the story behind it … if I  have already, but forgot,

just chalk it up to my old age. Here’s the story . . .

Our group of girls that visit in the chat room kept hearing from Sharon (Barker ’57) “I’ll puthis/her name in my God Can.” Finally, I asked her “just what IS your God Can?” She explained

that she has an old tin can that she decorated; when one of her friends is sick, she wants to helpthem but knows she can’t do anything about it … but God can! Therefore, this is her way of helping her friends by sending their names to God for help thru her can, asking his help for them.I really liked this idea, especially since my knees don’t hold me up as well as they used to butwhen friends need it I want to give the necessary “knee time” for them. Also, not being as craftyas Sharon, I had to figure out what I wanted my God Can to look like. Then the idea hit me!

As some of you will remember, Carl’s Mom was a telephone operator back in the day and oneChristmas I found this tin can/bank that was a telephone booth filled with candy, so I bought itand gave it to her. When she died and we were going thru her things, I remembered it andthought it was cute, so I kept it. I’m sure you know what’s coming next . . . I found the can and

now use it as my God Can; comes complete with a slot for dropping names inside and gives me a direct line to God.  Here’s a picture of it . . .

Don’t you think she looks like me in the late‘40s?

I’m still trying to figure out who the little boy

is waiting outside the door tho

(Thanks for another great idea, Sharon!)

Now just because this is such a really cool idea Sharon came up with, I don’t want all of you

scrambling to the doctor just to get your name put in my God Can! But PLEASE DO LETME KNOW if knee time is required on your end of the line so we can get the word to Him

asap.

IMPORTANT NOTES:

(1) There is another attachment to this email, so please open and read it as well. It is a

letter that Ed received from our Scholarship recipient from April 2010 and Ed ’s

reply to her. She is a remarkable person, as well as 4.0 gpa student, and we shouldall be so proud of her. She has given us a report on her second year at Mizzou …

including pictures!

Ed had a hard time learning how to use his new scanner to get the letter to me in

time for this January NL but, as usual, his was a job well done. Then I had it all

copied into the NL, but .. for reasons I couldn’t figure out .. it wouldn’t let me copy

the pictures and I didn’t want you to miss them. (My job not quite as well done asEd’s!) The only solution that I could come up with is the second attachment.

(2) Your first reminder that the Golden 50 Reunion is coming this summer!

Please put the following date on your calendar:

Sunday, June 10th

, 2012.

More information with be coming in March from the committee!

Hope you plan to join us here at Lee’s Summit High School. It is also the 55th

anniversary of our graduation so there will be special activities to celebrate that

auspicious occasion!
