Hi-Flow® Technology Overview
The elements or media known as Hi-Flow® is designed to remove free, dispersed and water soluble hydrocarbons from water by utilizing a combination of mechanisms. The majority of the free and dispersed hydrocarbons are removed by coalescence followed by gravity separation, but the elements also exhibit absorption and adsorption properties. The Water Soluble Organics are removed through enhanced partitioning by the oil that is held inside the media. The robust process is achieved by inverse flow of contaminated water through customized designed, media packed, lightweight elements. Despite the original design objectives to utilize this technology solely as a produced water polisher at low oil in water levels the system has found to be capable of consistently reducing hydrocarbon concentrations in produced water from hundreds and even thousands to well below 29 ppm and has often treated to below 5 ppm. This technology continues to perform efficiently in the face of the high variability in flow rates and inlet oil in water concentrations often observed when treating produced waters.
Three Stages of Coalescing
Enhanced PartitioningThe polymeric surface has a high affinity to the oil molecules and is saturated by the oil molecules through sorption. The oil wetted surface will greatly promote the partition phenomenon of water soluble organics into the oil phase, and subsequently removed with oil droplets by the on-going coalescing process.

Recovered Oil through coalescing
Why coalescing media over absorption?
• Oil removed from water; 72 ppm over one year equals 166,000 lbs– One pound of “Hi-Flow” returns ≈600 pounds of oil
• 20,000 bpd Hi-Flow ≈ 250 pounds of media– One pound of “X-Absorption” media absorbs at best 10
pounds of oil• 20,000 bpd X-absorption media ≈ 78 pounds of media
• Media change outs per annual basis– Hi-Flow ≈ about once per year– X-Absorption ≈ 350 times per year
20,000 BPD Water Treating System
Excursions are needed when conditions that raise the oil concentration in produced water effluent so that the water is out of compliance. The most immediate result is often an oil sheen!
“Excursion
s”
In cases were high water soluble organics are present you could be out of compliance with out seeing a sheen!
