Lower-Body Stability and Balance for Golf by Golf Head Pro – Ben Chambers

ower-body stability is an important element in the golf swing, since it

encourages a solid platform from which you can complete a balanced swing. A good foundation is the starting point for an effective swing that allows you to coil around your upper body and return the golf club to the ball with maximum power. Watch some recreational golfers who play occasionally and you will notice that a common fault among them is a lack of lower body stability.

Although many professional golfers will allow their front foot to lift from the ground in the backswing, this is different from the common amateur flaw where the front leg collapses inward on the backswing, resulting in a loss of firmness in the stance. Keeping the front foot connected in the stance is vital if you want to gain maximum coil. This is because the legs provide the basis for a backswing where the lower body gives you the necessary resistance to create a backswing that is full, yet in control. This produces torque, which in turn allows you to swing through the ball with full power.Generally speaking, it is recommended that your feet be approximately shoulder width apart for the driver, reducing as you move down into the short irons. Too many golfers have a stance that is too

Let Freedom RingThe month of July in Florida is certainly no picnic. It’s hot, sticky, 100% humidity, but the good thing is there are plenty of ways to beat the heat during those dog days of summer. Hunter’s Green Country Club offers your family an array of “fun in the sun” activities that is sure to please. We have several children’s

programs including swim team, swim lessons and an abundance of camps including activities, tennis and golf. For our big 4th of July Celebration, our members will enjoy a poolside party with music, games, food and fun! The summer months are the perfect time to join a country club to call your own. narrow and therefore reduces the stability in the stance. Widening the stance slightly, gives a greater feeling of stability, a more solid foundation from which to start the backswing.

The other extreme - a stance that is too wide - can also have a detrimental effect on the quality of your swing. A stance that is too wide leaves you feeling restricted and unable to complete the backswing properly. Your stance has to be comfortable without being too loose or too tight, allowing you to take the club back freely. Lower-body stability is essential for a good golf swing, and this applies all the way from the driver down to the short irons and even to the putter. When you have a stance that is stable, it should result in a golf swing that is balanced and powerful.

When you take your stance, make sure it feels natural and comfortable. Think about a soccer goalkeeper waiting to face a penalty kick and this should give you some HG

idea of what a good stance should feel like. Avoid rocking forward on your toes or back on your heels. Keep the stance solid and balanced, and you can be sure it will lead to a balanced and natural swing.

How Often Should You Visit the Doctor for Checkups?

hough some might consider a visit to the doctor unnecessary unless

they’ve developed symptoms, regular checkups are an important part of staying healthy. But how many times a year should you get a checkup? The common sense answer is at least once a year, but there are several factors that can determine your “magic number":• Age - Everyone needs to be seen once a year. As you get older, recommendations for routine monitoring of blood work for such things as sugar and cholesterol become more frequent (every 5 years in your twenties to every year in your fifties). Men need to get prostate checks every year after the age of 50; women need yearly mammograms and pap smears.

By Nancy W. Finnerty, MD, PhDFlorida Medical Clinic Family Medicine

A colonoscopy should be scheduled at age 50 for both men and women.• Medical History - Your medical history may require you to schedule more frequent or special checkups to prevent a recurrence of previous illnesses. It’s also a good idea to get regularly checked out if members of your immediate family have health conditions that may have been genetically passed on to you. For example if your parent or sibling has a history of colon cancer or suspicious polyps, a colonoscopy is recommended before the age of 50. • Gender/Ethnicity - Some illnesses are more specific to women than men, and vice versa. Women, for example, should visit their physician once a year for a gynecological exam, while it is recommended that men over 50 have a prostate exam every year. This is true for

different ethnicities as well—some illnesses (such as sickle cell anemia or celiac disease) are more prevalent among certain ethnic groups and prevention or treatment may require more frequent attention.• Current Activities - Almost every activity we engage in can affect our health. A yearly checkup allows your primary care physician to make recommendations that can keep you active longer and safely, such as safety equipment, use of sun screen, hydration requirements that change with season, age and medical conditions. As a multi-specialty facility, Florida Medical Clinic can give you a better idea of how often you need to visit the doctor based the above factors and how they apply to you. Hurricane Preparation:

Evacuating Your HomePart 1 of a 3 Part Series

E very year Floridians are faced with the possibility of hurricanes. Most years these dreaded storms do not land

on our shores and mainland. However, in the not too distant past hurricanes have had devastating effects on many communities in Florida and every year the possibility exists that communities will be hit during the summer and fall months. During the months of potential hurricanes, it is important to plan for the worst and hope that it never happens. For example, you and your family may be asked to leave your home due to some emergency conditions in your community. Your local emergency officials will not ask you to leave your home or location unless there is a valid reason. Do not try and second-guess the validity of their request. Do as they say immediately. Most of the time these requests and related information will come through radio broadcasts or the local TV station. Different warningmethods may be used such as a siren or telephone calls. Stay tuned and follow the directions and the evacuation routes recommended by the emergency officials. The most important thing to keep in mind is to have a plan for a possible evacuation.

Be prepared to evacuate and keep the following suggestions in mind:1. Know the Route and Follow Directions.Keep a map on hand that will enable you to take a route that may be unfamiliar to you. Be prepared to use routes specified by the emergency officials. Do not use any road or shortcut that they do not recommend. Some areas familiar to you may no longer be accessible or they may be dangerous for reasons unknown to you.2. Local Authorities Will Tell you What to Do. Stay in touch with local authorities. They are in touch with the state or federal authorities and will know which route to take and what local conditions might be. If you follow their instructions, you are more likely to arrive in a safe location and to be able to communicate with your family members or friends.3. Keep Your Vehicle's Tank Filled.Gas stations may be closed during a hurricane and prior to its arrival. During power outages, fuel pumps at gas stations may not work. Prepare for the hurricane by filling your tank well in advance of the storm.4. One Vehicle per Household. If it is necessary to evacuate, plan to take one vehicle per household. This will keep family members together and reduce the number of cars on your particular evacuation route.5. Power Lines. Do not go near power lines especially if they are broken or down.Look for more suggestions provided next month in HG News!

BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT

Mathnasium Summertime ummertime is almost here, and with it, vacations, fun,

and beaches. Summer is a great time for children to catch up from struggles in math over the past school year, and to give them a nice preview to next year’s math class. Children lose an average of one full month of learning over summer vacation, according to a Johns Hopkins research study by Dr. Harris Cooper, professor of psychological sciences at Duke University. The effect for math is worse than any other subject; children in Dr. Cooper’s study lost almost a full three months of math knowledge. Even more knowledge was lost at higher grade levels like pre-algebra and algebra, which involve more complex mathematical concepts. Summer, of course, is supposed to be fun, and many people don’t think math is fun. Kids tend to especially dread multiplication, but here are a few ways to make multiplication fun:• Playing cards: Take out the jacks, queens, and kings. Deal two cards to your child and have them multiply the result. • Dice: Using two six-sided dice is great for students who are not ready for higher numbers. Simply roll the two dice and ask

S your child to multiply the two numbers. • Songs: Songs are a fun and clever way to learn multiplication, and they appeal to the most musical students. Remember, though, that memorizing multiplication tables without understanding how numbers work will not last.• Games: Educational games like Count Down (a popular dice game) help kids learn basic mathematical operations in a fun way.The instructors at Mathnasium of New Tampa help make math even more fun. One way they do that is by playing games like Connect 4, Othello, Set, and other fun math games during their game hours. After the game hours, students stay to either catch up with the math they might have forgotten, or to learn next year’s math. They have very special ways of teaching math so that kids not only retain it, but also have fun. Since August of 2006, Mathnasium of New Tampa has taught countless children the important math skills that they need. The owners, Julie and Matt Williamson, are also one of twelve Mathnasium Mentor Centers in the United States, where all new Mathnasium owners must go in order to learn the skills they need to be successful.
