Dear Friends:
After 20 years, HFS Chicago Scholars continues to make a difference in the lives of
Chicago youth and we have you to thank! Each year HFS Chicago Scholars seeks out
economically disadvantaged, academically motivated 8th grade students that will uphold
the values of the program. For the past 20 years, our scholars have consistently delivered
outstanding results as they prepare for college and life with a challenging high school
curriculum, educational enrichment, and support from HFS Chicago Scholars.
“I would not have had the strength and guiding direction to persevere and achieve without the help
of HFS.” ~ James
· Andrea, a senior at Regina Dominican, travels two and a half hours each way to
school each day. She wakes up at 3:30 in the morning to begin her journey. She is a
National Honor Society member with an A grade point average. She is involved in
several clubs and performed over 70 hours of community service last year. She will
attend college in the fall of 2013.
· Jessica, a National Honor Society Scholar at Gordon Tech, has a 3.9 GPA and hopes
to attend an Ivy League School. Jessica participates in her school play, is an elected
HFS Class Officer and performed over 80 hours of community service last year.
· Tracy, a graduate of St. Ignatius College Prep, is a junior at UCLA majoring in Economics and Global Studies. With the support of HFS she learned the importance of balancing Academics and extracurricular activities, so that she could become a well- rounded person open to new experiences.
These are only a few of the dozens of stories reflecting the success of our scholars. We set
high expectations for our scholars from the day that they enter our program via our
rigorous 14 point contract demanding excellence. Last year our scholars achieved an
aggregate GPA of 3.44/ 4.0, collectively performed 4,537 hours of community service, and
100% were accepted into college.
“HFS is not only a scholarship to me; it is a family full of people who share similar life stories. They
have helped me and contributed to all my accomplishments.” ~Andrea
We hope that you are inspired by the stories of our scholars just as we are and continue to
support HFS Chicago Scholars. Thank you for your time, energy, and support. We could
not do this alone…but together we can make a difference!
Sincerely,
Desireé Pepper-Venzant Michael J. Kennelly

“Thank you so much for your support and help, I honestly can not express how much
it means to me. I was able to attend my dream school that I worked so hard to get to
and could not have gotten there without your help. It truly means the world to me that
you were there to help me finish high school. Thank you again so much!!!”

What I’ve been up to:
2008-2012 Chi Cheng Enterprise
I worked closely with Motorola Mobility engineers as a supplier on several popular DROID
devices. As a project engineer, I coordinated with teams all over the globe to resolve engineering and logistical issues to deliver
the best possible products to market on time and as efficiently as possible.
I am currently earning my Masters of Engineering Management at Northwestern University. I'm working to gain and develop
management skills to hopefully one day lead engineering teams and successfully navigate a business environment.
After all these years, as I've had the chance to meet so many new and different people, I also began to realize how everyone and
everything in my life came together to become this big support structure. A big part of who I am is because of HFS and the
guidance that you provided during some of my most formative years. I thank you very much for that.

Page 5
HFS Chicago Scholars was honored to have James O’Connor as the keynote speaker. Jim is the former Chairman and Chief
Executive Officer of Unicom Corporation and its subsidiary, Commonwealth Edison Company, and has given a lifetime of
corporate leadership to Chicago. Mr. O’Connor is also the founding Chairman of Big Shoulders Fund, which this year celebrates
its 25th anniversary of helping Chicago’s inner-city Catholic schools. Mr. O’Connor shared his vision and passion of helping
others by way of education for thousands of Chicago kids. Over 400 guests attended this event at the Standard Club.
Other Speakers included:
Robert Johnson 2006 HFS Alum Robert, a graduate of Loyola Academy and Drake University, shared how he and his sis-
ter, also an HFS Alum, were raised in a Chicago Housing Project and overcame many obstacles to accomplish their goals.
He shared “living in the projects was my family’s fiery furnace and the angel that God sent us was HFS. The HFS Chicago
Scholarship allowed me to escape the poverty-stricken and gang infested neighborhood where we lived.” Robert further
shared that without the HFS Chicago Scholarship he would not be the man he is today.
Wendy Perez 2010 HFS Alumna Wendy is a St. Ignatius graduate and currently holds a 4.0 GPA at Northwestern
University, where she majors in Human Development and Psychological Services, in hope of becoming a Psychiatric Nurse
Practitioner. Wendy spoke of the HFS Academic Directors and her mentor who helped her throughout her high school years,
including with the college application process, and provided valuable information that guided her to where she is now.
Andrea Castillo 2013 HFS Scholar Andrea engaged the crowd by encouraging us all to think about what makes us
unique - our Sitz Im Leben (German for “Situations in life.”). Andrea attends Regina Dominican High School and commutes
two and an half hours each way to school. She is involved in several clubs, has a 4.72 Cumulative GPA, and plans to attend

HFS ASSOCIATE BOARD & MENTORS
SCHOLAR & MENTOR HIGHLIGHTS
HFS Elected Class Officers 2012-2013 Isablerose, Jessica, Cache, Natalie, Simran, Dorothy,
Nayelin, and Lauren. ~We are thankful to have been
entrusted with the task of representing HFS Chicago
Scholars, our class, and our schools.
“We are Gloria and Diego and we are attending
Loyola University in the fall with full ride
scholarships.”
They will receive full tuition, room and board, and
books at Loyola University. Diego was accepted into
the School of Business and Gloria into the School of
Nursing.
THE POWER OF MENTORING: HEATHER MCGONEGLE, HFS Mentor, HFS Associate Board Liaison Chairperson
Helping Chicago kids navigate high school. Making
new friends. Networking opportunities with peers and
Board members who are Chicago business executives.
Forming a lifetime relationship. HFS has been all of the
above to me. As an HFS mentor of Jessica for the past
3 and a half years and Associate Board chairperson, I
am now able to reflect back on how I like other mentors
have helped empower our mentees and have been
embraced by our mentees as lifetime friends.
I always tell people how proud I am of Jessica and how excited I am to see her
continue to grow up and make her dreams a reality. She really is one of the
smartest, most compassionate, funny, and coolest kids that I know. Jessica is
ambitious about her future and is interested in becoming a biomedical engineer,
neurosurgeon, or perhaps a lawyer or actress. I have a hunch she may accomplish
all of these one day!
Jessica has already started preparing herself for this future by attending pre-med
programs at U.I.C. and summer academic programs at other universities around the
country. She is not just an amazing person on paper. In person, her bubbly
personality and sense of humor are infectious. She has performed in several high
school plays, including Annie in which she played the adorable orphan Molly and
Alice in Wonderland in which she earned the crowd's applause as a slow and steady
tortoise. Jessica's hard working attitude comes from her parents and family. Her
parents emigrated from Ecuador and are raising three amazing daughters. Jessica's
older sister Joanne was also an HFS scholar and is now in her junior year on a full
scholarship at the University of Iowa majoring in Chemical engineering.
I could go on and on about how impressive Jessica is...did I mention that she also
plays soccer and volunteers regularly? I am really looking forward to being a part
of Jessica's future and seeing her continue to succeed and give back to her
community. She truly is someone that we can all root for!

2013 Annual Casino Night May 31, 2013
Holiday Inn Chicago Mart Plaza 7:30pm
The Big Shoulders Fund graciously established a partnership with HFS in an effort to make our one-on-one mentoring program available to more high school students. This year, Big Shoulders is providing partial scholarships to 10 HFS scholars attending Big Shoulders Fund-supported high schools. The Big Shoulders Fund, a long supporter of HFS, has been a champion for Chicago’s inner-city families since 1986.
