If you have ever held a piece of antique reclaimed wood, you haveundoubtedly noticed the beauty that nature created over years and yearsof exposure to the elements. This unique patina and wind-blown texture
ensures that no two boards are ever the same.
Our mission is to authentically recreate this naturally-occurring textureand tone on a new wood substrate, without it ever looking manufacturedor mass-produced. Reclaimed wood is a diminishing commodity, and it is
our duty to help preserve the treasures that still stand.
Since our founding, we have grown to become a single-source woodsupplier and product manufacturer, with full in-house custom finishing
capabilities for any scale of residential or commercial project.

One of the highlights of the Forum Shops are thespiral escalators at the main entrance, sitting atopa reflecting pool. As of Spring 2020, this reflectingpool houses the first ever True Bar, seeminglyfloating atop the waters of the pool in this newprime location. The bar features the same ethos ofthe main restaurant, with non-alcoholic detoxofferings presented alongside traditional and
upscale alcoholic options. Between the primelocation and the uniquely health-centered drinkmenu, True Bar is the perfect fit for a Las Vegascurrently in the midst of a major innovative shift.
To help bring this vision to life, Hewn Elementsprovided over 2,800 linear feet of white oak boxbeams, in addition to over 1,800 linear feet offlat-stock material for the project. Hewn Elements beams are lightweight, easy-to-
install, and can quickly add character and value
to any space.
The first step to hang our beams is to install asleeper. A “sleeper” (1) is a piece of wood thatattaches to the ceiling, creating a surface for thebeam to attach to.
Cut sleepers to fit the inside diameter of thebeams you will be installing. Beams should beable to go on easily and fit snugly. Using a studfinder, mark the location of the studs on theceiling. For an easier install, pre-drill sleepers withthe spacing of the studs. Drill the holes to fit 3”heavy-duty drywall screws, making holes slightlyoversized to ensure that you bite into the stud.
Align the pre-drilled holes to your stud markings,
and attach with 3” heavy-duty drywall screws (2).
Measure your beams to match the dimensions ofyour ceiling (3). Score the beams with a straightedge (4), and cut beams to length, making sure allends have a clean square cut (5). Consider whereyour joints will be in your layout.
Holding a 15 gauge finish nailer close to theceiling, nail through the side of the beam and intothe sleeper every 12”. Repeat on other side ofbeam (6).
With a little prep work and the rightmeasurements, an entire ceiling’s worth of beamscan be installed and ready-to-go in one afternoon!

WALLPANELING
Hewn Elements has its roots in apassion for reclaimed barnwood, and the story that it tells ofAmerican history and culture.
Unbeknownst to many, thereclaimed barnwood industry isnot always a positive portrait ofrecycling and sustainability, as itis often portrayed.
In many instances, historicalbuildings with cultural value tolocal communities are torn downfor their aged barnwood, whichhas risen in value as the demandfor reclaimed wood hasincreased. In addition, many ofthese buildings are located inenvironments with regular
exposure to contaminants thatare unsafe for living spaces.
While some companies go togreat lengths to treat andrefinish their reclaimed wood tomake it safe for consumers, wood is often sold as-is tounsuspecting buyers.
In response to this, HewnElements developed a way toreproduce the aging process in aworkshop environment, startingwith mill-direct sustainablysourced lumber, and applyingour proprietary non-toxic aging, distressing, and coloring processto create a new and whollyunique product.
All of the character of reclaimed wood, without any ofthe damaging compromises.

YAKISUGI(SHOU SUGI BAN)
Yakisugi (also known as ShouSugi Ban) is the Japanese art ofcharring wood to create ablackened, dark finish withunique properties andcharacteristics. Whentraditionally applied, theYakisugi/Shou Sugi Ban processcreates a layer of carbonizationon the wood which offers adegree of natural resistanceagainst water, fire, rot, andinsects. This blackened surfaceages with the elements, creatinga stunning patina.
When applied for aestheticpurposes, the charring processcreates unique shapes, textures, and tones that cannot bereplicated through paint orstain. Products featuring an
aesthetic application still gainthe natural benefits of thiscarbonized layer, but can besupplemented with additionalfinishing and sealers to create aproduct that is less delicate tothe touch.
We offer a number of Yakisugiwood treatments, with varyinglevels of char and colorcharacteristics. We also offersealed Yakisugi , creating a moredurable product for transportand protection against theelements on exterior surfaces. For extremely sensitiveenvironments where exposedcarbonization would beproblematic, we offer D!ku Ban,an imitation Yakisugi with noburn whatsoever.
Reinventing a traditional Japanese art to give woodstrength, character, and perseverance.

Our preferred wood for applying aYakisugi/Shou Sugi Ban technique isAccoya®. This is due to the incredibledurability of the wood, both on thesurface and throughout the core of theboard, allowing for a carbonization that isoverall more stable than on other species.
Our Accoya® Yakisugi/Shou Sugi Banofferings include traditional unsealedfinishes for exterior use, sealed finishesfor interior use (to prevent transfer ofcarbon upon touch), experimental finishesinvolving color and texture, and customofferings to suit individual client needs.

YAKISUGI
AN ORIGIN STORY
焼杉
Japan is often called a land ofcontradictions. It is a place wheretechnology is pushed to new limits, and where urban cityscapes canspan past the horizon. Yet it is also acountry and culture that intentionallyhonors and preserves the past.
In order to understand the moderncontext of Yakisugi in Japan, onemust look back a few centuries tothe policy of Sakoku, during theTokugawa Shogunate, which ruledfrom roughly the year 1600 to 1868.Prior to this time period, Portuguesetraders and missionaries found greatsuccess in the import and export ofgoods and knowledge, with the first
European contact taking place in1543. But in response to an increasein piracy and the perceived threat ofexternal ideology, the Sakokupolicies created near-total isolationfor Japan on the world stage.
During this time, also called the EdoPeriod, the Tokugawa Shogunatemoved the capital of Japan fromKyoto to Edo (now known as Tokyo). The new capital of Edo, like much ofJapan, was constructed primarily ofwood and paper, leading to anumber of devastating fires. After aparticularly destructive event in 1657,Japanese architecture began to pivottowards techniques and

designs that would help mitigate the effects offire. Thatched roofs were replaced by tiles, and stone embankments were constructed toreduce fire spread.
By the 1700s, a new technique was developedto help slow the spread of fires, and provide astronger and more weather-resistant coatingto wood buildings. Known as Yakisugi (or ShouSugi Ban), this technique involves charring theexterior of a wood surface until a layer ofcarbonization is achieved. While thiscarbonization can sometimes appear almostas a dark-brown stain, it can also take on acrackled pattern, depending on the intensityof the burn and the species of wood used.
Traditionally, this process was performed onJapanese Cedar (called “Sugi”), though inmodern times it has been applied to morewood species. When creating Yakisugi, thewood must be burned to a precise levelbefore the fire is quenched. For some Yakisugifinishes, the wood surface is then brushed tocreate a uniform color (anywhere from deepbrown to pitch black). Or in the case of acrackle-style burn, the product is left as-is toachieve the maximum effect.
Though it may seem counter-intuitive tointentionally burn wood siding in a regionprone to fire, the process forms a protectivelayer that make it naturally fire-resistant to amuch higher level than untreated wood. It alsoprolongs the life of the wood, and helps itresist insect infestation, water, and decay. Forthis reason, the technique became a popularway to treat wood used on traditionalJapanese townhouses, shrines, and otherbuildings during the Edo Period, to such anextent that the look itself is now generallyassociated with pre-war Japan.
The Old Capital
While Tokyo still retains the title of Japan’scurrent capital city, Kyoto has earned thereputation of being one of the best places inthe country to witness the convergence ofJapan’s past and future.
Kyoto was largely spared from the destructionof World War II by recommendation ofRoosevelt and Truman’s Secretary of War,Henry L. Stimson. The city itself is currentlyhome to over 1.4 million people, and isconsidered the cultural hub of Japan. The cityfeatures a dense urban core, but issurrounded by less populated sprawl, much ofwhich features older single-and-two-storybuildings interspersed with newer multi-levellow-rise structures, often quite narrow inwidth. Despite the prevalence of newerconstruction from recent decades, it is easy tospot at least one example of charred woodsiding on nearly every city block, whether it bea preserved historical structure or an homageto the past on a new building.
To the east of the city core sits theHigashiyama Ward (meaning Eastern Hills orMountain), which features some of the bestpreserved examples of Japanese pre-wararchitecture, much of which is clad in somecapacity with Yakisugi charred siding. Visitorsto Japan flock to this area in hopes ofexperiencing the culture of the past, includingvisits to tea houses, shops featuring traditionalgoods, and the chance to spot a Geisha on herway to or from work. In addition, the areafeatures a multitude of Buddhist temples andShinto shrines, many of which are consideredUNESCO World Heritage Sites and aredesignated as National Cultural Properties.

Although Kyoto remains one of the bestplaces to witness traditional pre-wararchitecture, efforts to preserve the traditionalMachiya-style buildings have suffered somesetbacks in recent years, with many houses inless-historical neighborhoods beingdemolished to be turned into apartmentbuildings, or remodeled to look more modern. The tourist sector is also taking a toll on thecity, with visitors flocking to historical districtsduring daylight hours, bringing importantrevenue but crowding already narrow streetsin the process.
Still, there have been many efforts towardspreservation in recent years, including amassive restoration project on the largewooden Kiyomizu-dera Temple complex, anda push for city funding through anaccommodation tax for visitors. Paradoxically,
one of the best ways to visit a preservedMachiya is to visit the Starbucks Coffeelocation in the Higashiyama District, housed ina restored and preserved structure, completewith shoe-free tatami seating areas on thesecond level and several small zen gardensthroughout the space.
Similar to the Higashiyama Ward, theArashiyama district in northern Kyoto is hometo winding streets and old historical structures.Interspersed within these old structures, however, are renovated and newer buildingsthat pay homage and respect to the past, while incorporating modern styles into theiroverall aesthetics. Many of these homes andstructures seemingly utilize Yakisugi as a wayto respect their cultural past, whether it be onperimeter fencing, wall cladding, or even asaccents against stark-white plaster. the work that Hewn Elements accomplishes iscentered around this same ideology:Preserving the past by looking towards thefuture.
At Hewn Elements, we create our Yakisugi/Shou Sugi Ban products on North-American-grown Western Red Cedar and NorthwesternSpruce, as well as on innovative offeringsfrom Accoya®. We constantly work towardscreating new colors, finishes, and textures, incorporating traditional charring techniquesnot only as a protective agent, but also as anaesthetic tool to highlight certaincharacteristics of the wood.
Most of our catalog colors in our InteriorCedar, Exterior Cedar, Northwestern Spruce, and Ohana collections feature some degree of
charring and brushing. In addition, we alsooffer deeper char and crackle textures in ourYakisugi/Shou Sugi Ban collection, andalternatives like D!ku Ban that mimic thisdarkened look.
Whether you are embracing a dark and sleekmodernist look, or you simply wish to addsome accent wood elements to highlight aclassic style, Yakisugi/Shou Sugi Ban is agreat way to achieve a finished image that willdefend against the elements, and stand thetest of time in both a literal and figurativesense.
Once viewed as a utilitarian necessity in orderto prevent wear and destruction, Yakisugi isnow an affordable luxury, acting as a bridgebetween the past and the future.

PLINTH BLOCK“Plinth” is an architectural term for a support, ora base for a column. Since the mid 16th century,Plinth Blocks were used as a load-bearingsupport for columns that were usually made ofheavy material such as stone. As time andtechnology advanced, the need for PlinthBlocks as a supporting component was nolonger needed. In modern construction theyserve as a compliment between competingarchitectural elements in high-end homes andcommercial applications.
The purpose of a Plinth Block is to create asubtle yet pleasing transition between the trimthat surrounds a door or entryway (architrave, orcasing), and the trim that is at the base of thewall (skirting board, or base molding). Thethickness of one molding may not match thethickness of the other, and the styles may differresulting in a clunky unfinished look. Often theseam between the two can be very rough, especially with the expansion and contraction ofwood over the years. The Plinth Block isdesigned to stand proud by having the verticalcase trim butt into the top of the block and thehorizontal base trim butt into the side, acting asan intersection between two dissimilar sizedmoldings.
Designs and styles of Plinth Blocks will varydepending on the look you are trying to achieveand can range from a plain and modern square
edge to more elaborate Victorian designs. PlinthBlocks are usually sized in proportion to thebaseboard and casing and are traditionally 1/8”to 1/4” thicker than the thickest board so that itstands out from them. This adds a reveal andshadow-line that creates depth between thevertical and base trim creating acomplementary finish. The width is generally1/4” wider than the casing and is flush on thejamb side, pushing it out wider than the casing.
Plinth Blocks tend to look best when thedecorative top edge begins above the top ofthe baseboard and can be 1/4” to 3” taller, depending on the style you want to achieve.Typically, they are most pleasing when theheight is 1.5 to 2 times the width. With theirsimplicity and ease of install, Plinth Blocks cantake any home’s architecture to a new level.

SUSTAINABILITY
The recent increase in demand for reclaimed wood materials has taken atoll on the supply chain for re-purposed wood. What was once seen as a
way of recycling materials from existing structures has become adamaging practice in which buildings with history and purpose are being
torn down for their material value.
We believe the best way to honor the past is to preserve it. The wood weuse is a sustainable resource, sourced locally from North American forests
and specifically planted to be harvested via responsible means.
When practiced properly, responsible forestry techniques represent oneof the greatest tools in the fight to preserve our old-growth forests on agrand scale, and protect the fragile ecosystems that call them home.
