This newsletter will reach you all as the end of summer looms. And I hope you all were able to embrace summer and recharge those batteries as best you could!

For many of us end of summer means going back to school (whether you or your kids/grandkids). The end of the wonder of children – whether they are ours or someone else’s – at fireworks, spar-klers, catching frogs or toads or lightening bugs, or running through sprinklers. End of favorite summer activities – baseball, gardening, swimming, camp-ing, softball (16 inch here in Chicago you know!), outdoor festivals and concerts, alfresco dining and rooftop cocktails. It means the end of get-togeth-ers with friends and family that seem so much easier and enjoyable than any other time of year – graduation parties, tailgating, hiking, biking, run-ning, block parties, summer vacation, barbecues…

For me, the Summer of 2018 is a once-in-a-lifetime memory of a decision I took to wholly recharge, un-plug and unwind. I took a 10 week break from my professional career and it is without a doubt one of the best decisions I ever made! Unencumbered by clock or calendar my days locally often entailed wandering at my leisure through all downtown Chicago has to offer – museums, parks, boat tours, artistic lighthouse statues on Michigan Avenue (for Chicago Lighthouse, benefitting people with disabilities), festivals, farmer’s markets, the river and boardwalk, local free music, artwork and gar-dens. Eau Claire WI, Long Beach IN, Sisters Lakes MI, and Steamboat Springs CO all were wonder-ful experiences as I ventured outside Chicago for some summer fun and visits. For sure not every-one is in a position to enjoy a 10 week hiatus from all things work – but for those of you who have considered it, or who are inspired by my writing of it – I encourage you to reflect if it might be more of an option for you than you at first suspect. I am truly recharged and ready to hit the ground running July 30th at a new job with a new company.

The little work I did during the summer was for the SCC – for all the right reasons and happily done! While our chapter does not do regular dinner meet-ings during the summer – our Board members are hard at work in many facets. Crystal Rampaul has us ready for some Diversity and Career events

with universities as part of our Next Gen initiatives. Gene Frank is preparing our scholarship applica-tion mailings. Lisa Kringas, Lisa Flugge-Berendes and Sandy Schantz are coordinating a special meeting in October – where we will be in Racine WI instead of Chicago IL. Part of their coordination is possible transportation for the many Chicago folks we expect will head over the border for this great meeting. Stay tuned for more details to come!

September we kick off Fall in the West Loop at Nia on West Randolph for a 8-course tasting menu in downtown Chicago, where the SCC is paying the valet cost for anyone driving to the event. Lisa Hilson has also secured of course Café La Cave for our traditional November meeting – where we honor or Emeritus, scholarships are awarded, our Stanley Allured award is presented, and we induct our new SCC officers for the 2019 year. Katie Harris of GlennCorp, recently relocated from the Southeast SCC Chapter, is taking on Program for some excit-ing speakers for our Fall meeting line up.

We are actively on the hunt for more volunteers – whether you are interested in running for an SCC office, volunteering ad hoc, or somewhere in between. Please let us know – we can use help with Social Media, website and newsletter feature articles and news tidbits, registration, student/uni-versity engagement -- [email protected]

We also are actively on the hunt for fun news tid-bits from our members. Cindy Yu, former Chair of our chapter, has taken on coordination of our web-site and newsletter and we want YOU to help us with good news you might want to share. Running a marathon? Company fun outing? Child or grand-child recently graduated or awarded? Any and all good news about our members can be forwarded to [email protected].

I am excited to see you all in September in Chicago and in October in Racine WI. While I loved my sum-mer battery recharge – I genuinely miss my time with my SCC peeps!

Dr. Maliha Syed is a Principal Scientist at Avlon Industries and holds a PhD in Polymer Science & Engineering from the University of Southern Mississippi. Syed was named 2017 Society of Cosmetic Chemist, Midwest Chapter’s Speaker of the Year for her engaging and highly relevant presentation comparing textured hair to non-textured hair last November. We will get to that later, for now let’s get to know the doctor.

Becoming a cosmetic scientist wasn’t a matter of preference but a matter of fact for Dr. Maliha Syed. “I was born into the industry, it was my destiny” said Syed. She liked science from an early age. Even at the age of 5 she came to the realization that science had the potential to explain everything about the world and Syed wanted to know more about the world so studying science just made sense. Because of her father’s business, cosmetic science became Syed’s reality. Even if she wasn’t born into it, Syed says she would have stilled pursued a career in cosmetic science, “I love that this industry marries science and beauty, so you get to have that little taste of creativity and artistic flare, but you also get to be a scientific researcher, combining my favorite passions.” When asked about her journey to joining the family business Syed recalls her days scanning and filling papers as a child, before computer became king. She spoke fondly about working in the lab during summer breaks in her high school years, making shampoos and conditioners, “my supervisor at the time would give me a formula, make me pullout the big PCPC INCI books, look up every single ingredient and write down its function. She really tried to get me to understand formulating. It was really fun and exciting work.” After completing her undergraduate degree in Chemistry and Economics at The George Washington University in 2009 she began working at Avlon Industries full-time. Syed said, “I soon started to realize that there was a higher level of scientific understanding that I was missing in order to really formulate cutting edge products and to be smarter about formulation,” which drove her to obtain a PhD. While pursuing this degree, Syed was awarded 1st place poster at the 2014 Annual SCC Scientific Meeting for her work on hydrogen bond driven, self-assembling rheology modifiers.

Syed sees the future of Avlon as expanding beyond hair care, particularly textured hair, and forging new ground in skin care and OTC products with a focus on sustainability. Her role in this bright new future is not just R&D but managing all aspects of the innovation process from conception to execution. Through communicating with customers and understanding their unmet needs, Syed believes with this new direction “we will be taking our core customers with us and picking up new ones along the way”. When it comes to Innovation, Syed commented that Avlon’s priority is “to do our due diligence to find out what our customers really want and deliver. It’s really cool to see how a business works, how something goes from being just a thought and becomes a tangible reality on the shelf. It’s a lot of work and it feels good to be a part of that and be part of a larger team and build a community around it.” When it comes to generating new ideas, Syed states it “starts with listening to consumers.” Whether it’s through exchanging dialog at trade shows, reading blogs, watching hair tutorials, or test salon evaluation, she is certainly engaged with consumers. “I don’t want to give away all my secrets” she says, “the biggest thing is listening to people and what they want because they tell you, it’s right there.”

New developments in textured hair research are in sight. Syed commented that the new findings will be in Avlon’s next presentation, “our main research effort is understanding porosity” with a new instrument to measure porosity, Avlon is working on method development. In the November 2017 presentation, Syed defined porosity as the degree to which hair can take up foreign liquids and gasses through its various channels and pores. One of the challenges she mentions “is getting hair samples of every type and sub-type. In my last talk unfortunately, I had to group together type 3 and 4 because of limitations in hair samples but what I really want to do is compare 3A to 3B to 3C to 4A to 4B to 4C in order to observe incremental changes going from curlier to coilier hair.” Syed’s next presentation will potentially be the St. Louis SCC September dinner meeting. “We started the textured hair presentations in New York and then, Midwest and now St. Louis. It’s almost becoming a series because as we get updates, we get to update our presentation too” says Syed. When speaking about her research Syed’s passion for

studying textured hair is evident, “I love studying textured hair. I find it so interesting; it never ceases to amaze me. There is a lot of variation. It fits with the environment. Humans adapt to wherever they are, and their hair reflects that. Your hair has a purpose.” She made a compelling argument that the hair types we see today developed as a function of the environment humans endured thousands of years ago. “Essentially your hair is protecting you from whatever conditions you are in” she states.

Avlon’s Texture Release system is changing the way women manage their hair. According to Syed, “we had two worlds, the relaxer world and naturalista world, Texture Release is a nice balance between those worlds.” Women no longer have to compromise. With Texture Release, they are given the option of having straight hair, but not permanently straight. Syed continues “that’s the key; they have options. They can go back and forth between having their nice beautiful curl and if they want to wear it straight, they can. They can also change their curl from being a coily curl to a looser coil.” It’s evident Avlon’s Texture Release is providing women with versatility and options. Syed points out that “curly hair can be frizzier, and Texture Release allows you to keep your curl and just smooth it, making it easier [to maintain] with the humid environment in the summer months.” There are a lot of smoothing-straightening systems on the

market that use formaldehyde, which is a known carcinogen. What makes Avlon different, states Syed, is that “we try to provide solutions for women that are healthy solutions. Even our relaxers leave the hair stronger and in better condition than competitive systems. When we saw these smoothing systems emerge, and that they were using high levels of formaldehyde, we wanted to provide a safer alternative using glyoxylic acid.” Texture Release is a safe, temporary straightening system that won’t damage the hair.

Natural is the hottest topic in the market when it comes to Personal Care products, but the language is changing. Syed is “seeing more people interested in sustainability, more questions about cruelty free, vegan, recycling the bottles, silicone-free, and chemical-free. People are looking more to nature to solve their hair care needs.” When it comes to balancing natural ingredients with performance, she says “there is a compromise. Natural [products] may not perform as well as something with synthetic ingredients in it. The key is to make sure our products are safe and effective, but wherever we can, every step of the way, we keep it natural based.” Syed continues “that there are ingredients that aren’t allowed. The challenge is making a product that is as efficient without using those ingredients.”

When asked about her favorite Personal Care product, Syed picked Neutrogena make-up removing wipes for her for face, which she can’t live without and As I Am Long and Luxe Gro-Wash for her hair. “It’s everything, it’s a shampoo and it conditions and detangles, I love it,” she states.

We can certainly expect to see more stimulating presentations and research from this talented chemist, especially when it comes to textured hair.

On PartingSometimes I’ll come when you are asleep,An unexpected visitor.Don’t leave me outside in the street.Don’t bar the door!

I’ll enter quietly, softly sit.And gaze upon you in the dark. Then when my eyes have gazed their fill,I’ll kiss you and depart.

Written by Bulgarian poet Nikola Vaptsarov, On Parting was Tony’s favorite poem. Anton “Tony” Dokov, born in Sofia, Bulgaria, to Mihaela Iordanova, passed away on Mother’s Day, one week before his 30th birthday, in Sequoia National Park, California in a hiking accident. Anton lived with his mother and his sister in Evanston, IL. He graduated from Loyola University and joined Abbvie where he worked as Financial Analyst. Two months before the accident took place he moved to San Diego, CA with his girlfriend, Ivani Pauli.

Anton was an extremely supportive son and brother, spoke six languages, had a tremendous sense of humor and was loved by everybody. He was a marathon runner, Ironman enthusiast, excellent skier and was well known on Dempster Beach (Lake Michigan) where

he swam every morning and evening. Anton was a member of Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society. He volunteered at Rotary Club Evanston, but above all Anton had a huge heart and was always ready to help anyone.

We were given a gift to have Anton with us and we will cherish every moment we had. Let God bring him happiness and peace in the better world he flew away.

Anton is survived by his mother Mihaela Iordanova; sister, Maria Iordanov; grandmother, Margarita Mateva-Iordanova; and grandfather, Ivan Iordanov; uncle Philipp Iordanov and his girlfriend Ivani Pauli. He also leaves behind his greatly loved dog, Pixie.

From the Guest Book:Anton was a lovely, happy go-lucky young man. He always had a smile on his face and took the time to make everyone around him feel special. Anton always brought fun and laughter to any room he was in. Light and positive energy flowed from him. If there were more like him, there would be hope for this mad world. Anton will always be remembered as an example of generosity of spirit. He will be forever missed in our hearts and in our minds. It was so easy to love him. https://www.legacy.com/obituaries/chicagotribune/obituary.aspx?n=anton-dokov-tony&pid=189299644

Anton felt very passionate about the cause and his sister Maria has been working on different projects in support of this organization.https://www.whitehelmets.org/en
