Where Are They Now? Ronald L. Clise was born in Frostburg, MD on December 29, 1961. He was raised in Eller-

slie, MD by his parents Virginia A. Clise and the late Richard C. Clise. Upon graduation from Mt. Savage High School in 1979, he took a job as a service station attendant making minimum wage for 18 months. After taking a look at the economy and realizing that the job market wasn't exactly booming and "there wasn't nothing to do," Ron decided to do something where he could make a difference... on April 19, 1982, he enlisted in the U.S. Army. His basic training was completed at Fort Dix, NJ, and his first assignment took him to Fort Bragg, NC, as a driver of an M915 tractor trailer. Soon after the completion of his first assignment, he achieved his first promotion from Pvt. to Pvt. First Class. Ron was then moved to Ft. Clayton, Panama where he was trained in Jungle Operations which he found most exhilarating. SSG Clise had served time in Fulda, Germany for 3 years then was returned to the states enroute to Ft. Eustis, VA. Ronald served as a heavy vehicle driver and tested top

Egypt and during his one year stay, Ron was responsible for 12 soldiers ICt, secret equipment. In December 1993, Ron anxiously arrived at Sinai,

and 2 million dollars worth of equipment. After ending his international tour, Ron returned to his home state of Maryland. While in Aberdeen, MD, SSG Clise held the position of Squad Leader and tested additional top secret items. In May of 1997 SSG Clise moved to Fort Leonard Wood, MO where he is currently responsible for 3000 soldiers and their problems. Ron is cur-rently eligible for promotion of Sergeant First Class.

Ronald is highly decorated with 2 Army Commendation Medals, 1 Joint Service Achievement Medal, 3 Army Achievement Medals, 5 Good Conduct Medals, 2 Multi-National Force and Ob-servers Medals and 1 Drivers Badge. Way to go Ron!!

Community Historyi The Mason and Dixon Line

Part 1 Many people living in our small town are well aware of the location and maybe some of the general

history surrounding the man made border between Pennsylvania and Maryland. Some of the newer resi-dents may not be aware of even the location. In this edition of Community History, we hope to provide some of the basic facts as well as throw in a few tidbit's of stories that have been passed down through family history.

The line its self serves as the state boundary between PA and Maryland. The line was first surveyed beginning in 1763 through 1767 and bears the name of the two people in charge of its completion. The two men were Charles Mason and Jeremiah Dixon.

The two men had been engaged to draft a line to bring to a close a century long dispute between William Penn and the Pennsylvania Colony and Lord Baltimore and the Maryland Colony. The two ar-rived in Philadelphia on Nov. 15, 1763. They were administered oaths on Dec. 6th and given instructions on where to begin and on hiring help. They were further instructed: "You are to enter your fair minutes of your proceedings in two books, to be by you kept for that purpose, which minutes are every day to be signed by both of you and in such minutes you will take notice of the most remarkable Buildings, Waters, Bridges and Roads that my be near the Lines which you are to run or through which the Liens must pass. If the Liens you are required to run, pass through any Houses, orchard, or gardens you are not to destroy or injure any such house nor cut down any fruit trees without the consent of the owners"

The pair first established an observatory and a star gazers stone on a farm just west of Philadelphia. This was the point to which they began their surveying efforts. It is to be noted that the majority of their work was conducted with a 66' foot chain used to measure distance and a 16 1/2 foot wooden frame they used to help on steep slopes.

Part 2 of Mason and Dixson Line Community History will be published in the next Ellerslie Extra!

Interscholastic League volleyball team after leading the Indians to a 13-4 record. Kennell, a co-captain on the team, was one of the squad's top servers, converting 143 of 142 chances for a 94 percent efficiency. She led the team in attacking, with 331 successful hits out of 381 tries for an 87 percent rating.

Kennell was also credited by the team's coaches with 58 outstanding saves throughout the season, and her success on the court was the result of an out-and-out effort to play every ball to the best of her ability, according to Mount Savage coach Joanne Nickel.

WMIL coaches select the all-star team, which this year consisted of just six players. Teams in the WMIL are: Mount Savage, Allegany, Beall, Fort Hill, Westmar, Northern and Southern.

An outstanding all-around athlete, Kennell also was voted to the last two Times-News All-Area high school softball teams. She was a junior starter on Mount Savage's undefeated, state champion volleyball team in 1998.

I VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT This month, the volunteer spotlight shines on Marilyn Kennell. Marilyn is a very active

member of the Ladies Auxiliary for the Fire Department. She currently holds the office of "Chairman of Ways and Means". She is very active in helping with the banquets for the ladies and also works very hard with the firemen in working Monday night bingo. She and her hus-band Leroy "Booty" Kennel! also help with the preparation work for the monthly chicken fries. President of the Auxiliary, Barb Corbin, added these comments about Marilyn: ... "When you're in need, she is the one to call," and "She lends a helping hand to everybody." Carole Wilson, Vice President of the same organization, added "There is no job she won't undertake." Great Job Marilyn, the auxiliary, the fire department, and the whole community benefit from your untiring efforts! You and your work are greatly appreciated. Thank You.
