DESCRIPTION

Gustave, Philippe, and Henri – war heroes, all – are plotting an escape. They've had enough of the tortures of their confinement: dictatorial captors, untrustworthy fellow prisoners, and far too many birthday parties. Indeed, life in a retired soldiers' home is almost unbearable! So, while keeping each other company on the back patio, they hatch a plan to escape to Indochina, or at least to a picnic under the poplars on a nearby hill. Winner of London's prestigious Olivier Award for Best New Comedy, Tom Stoppard's adaptation of this French play is playful, bawdy, and heartbreakingly funny. “The fi nest thing that arose out of the war [was] comradeship.” —Erich Maria Remarque, All Quiet on the Western Front

A hundred years ago next summer, an act of revolution sparked a war of unprecedented scale and severity. Between 1914-1918, over 16 million people lost their lives in what is considered the fi rst truly modern war.

The lucky men to emerge from those trenches returned to a world forever changed by the Great War. Monarchies fell. Nations limped through economic depressions. And the Second World War somehow managed to outdo the atrocities of its predecessor.

And yet, these survivors persevered. The survivors you’ll meet tonight each carry their wartime experience diff erently: a crippled leg, a bit of shrapnel, a lingering case of shell shock. They cannot shake their past, so instead they relive it – however and whenever possible. They do so with wit and good humor, forever bound to one another by the common experience of war.

Yet reminiscing can only go so far. Old age does not gel with memories of young, heroic deeds. It is time to escape. Time to transcend the mundanities of the veterans’ home and the inexorable forward march of the calendar.

But where will they go? And how will they get there?

and Rough Crossing, which the Lantern produced in 1998. Stoppard co-wrote the screenplays for Brazil and Shakespeare in Love and is the recipient of one Academy Award and four Tony Awards. He has been a key playwright of London’s National Theatre and is one of the most internationally performed dramatists of his generation. He translated Le Vent des Peupliers in 2005, titling the play Heroes because he worried the literal translation of The Wind in the Poplars was too similar to Kenneth Grahame’s The Wind in the Willows. Heroes premiered at London’s Wyndham’s Theatre in 2004 with Richard Griffi ths, John Hurt, and Ken Stott, and won the prestigious Olivier Award for Best New Comedy.

GÉRALD SIBLEYRAS (Playwright) is an acclaimed French dramatist and actor most noted for his 2003 play Le Vent des Peupliers, which has been translated and produced in countries worldwide including the United Kingdom, Germany, Uruguay, and the United States. Future productions are planned in Australia, New Zealand, Spain, Finland, and many other countries. The play premiered at Théâtre Montparnasse and received four Molière nominations including Best Author. Also in 2003, Un Petit Jeu Sans Conséquence (A Little Game Without Consequence), written by Sibleyras and co-author Jean Dell, was awarded fi ve Molière Awards. Un Petit Jeu Sans Conséquence was adapted into a French fi lm in 2004, and an American version of the screenplay is currently in development with Focus Films. As an adaptor into French, Sibleyras’ credits include William Nicholson’s The Retreat From Moscow (La Retraite de Russie), Daniel Keyes’ Flowers for Algernon, and Mike Leigh’s Abigail’s Party. He is currently adapting his play La Danse de L’Albatros for the screen.

M. CRAIG GETTING (Director) is a Philadelphia-based director and theater educator. Directing credits include A Skull in Connemara, Act Without Words II, Molloy, Lady with Lapdog (Lantern Theater Company); Accidental Death of an Anarchist (Curio Theatre Company); Straw, Stick, Brick, (Philly Fringe); Melancholy Play (Allens Lane), and Really Rosie (Theatre Horizon). He teaches with the Lantern, Delaware Theater Company, and Curio, covering everything from basic storytelling to Shakespeare. Craig received his BA in Drama from Kenyon College. This summer: Complete Works Abridged with CCTC. Thanks to KC, Charles, and the rest of the Lantern for this opportunity. Love to Laura.

NICK EMBREE (Scenic Designer) is thrilled to work with this great production team again after working with them on The Island and Vigil. Nick is a freelance set designer with design credits at many Philadelphia and regional theaters. He is proud to have served as the Lantern’s resident set designer, and still manages to do about one set a year here (most recently, New Jerusalem). Nick is the head of the B.F.A. Our Board of Directors will match your gift to our Annual Fund through the end of our fi scal year on June 30, up to a total of $25,000. Please help us meet this exciting challenge by making a tax-deductible donation in support of the Lantern’s artistic and education programs. As you may know, we keep our ticket prices low to ensure that great theater is available to everyone, and even with sold out performances, ticket sales cover only 50% of our operating costs. This leaves a gap that must be covered by donations from foundations, corporations, and theater lovers like you. Your gift directly supports the intimate theater that you love at the Lantern, as well as Illumination, our award-winning education program that engages high school students in the world of theater, nurturing their curiosity and artistic expression through no-cost matinee performances, in-school residencies, and after-school drama clubs. Thank you for your support!

`Please help us meet the $25,000 Board Challenge by June 30!
