For the third time this season the away trip to Chichester was postponed. This was the Herne Bay’s 50 th weather-related postponement in their Isthmian League tenure – 20 at home, 30 away.

Chichester City A Match Postponed – Waterlogged Pitch

The Kentish Gazette published an article much of which bore a remarkable resemblance to one that appeared on the Herne Bay FC website four days previously, and gave Ben Smith’s thoughts on… The defeat to Burgess Hill Town: “I was left scratching my head asking where did that performance come from? But I knew before the game it was one of the toughest fixtures we could have had, they were going to give a reaction. They prepared as best as they could to make sure a 7-0 loss did not happen again. I thought George (Kamurasi) was tremendous, which is why we showed faith in him. He had a few early games where he made some mistakes, but he showed his ability and his strength of character. Numbers two to 14 did not turn up, it was nowhere near good enough, we failed to do the real basics and it was disappointing. I’m gutted for the boys, because we got ourselves in a great position and then shot ourselves in the foot, big time. They have been outstanding recently and performing well above expectation, so we don’t dwell on the loss, we move forward. All of the positives that we have been talking about are still relevant and our league position is better than what we hoped for at this stage of the season.” Aaron Smith-Joseph’s cross which went in off the post and gave the Hillians the victory: “You can’t plan for that obviously, that’s when you know it’s not going to be your day.” On the postponed Chichester game: “We would have loved to play Chichester and beat them to prove a point and forget about the Burgess Hill game. They had a great run in this year’s FA Cup and if we keep improving, I don’t see why we can’t do that in the near future.” On the trip to Guernsey: “It’s a difficult place to play because everything is in their favour and we’re expecting a tough test from a good footballing side.”

Refurbishment to Guernsey Rugby’s Footes Lane at the beginning of the season saw the Green Lions playing their first seven league matches away from the Bailiwick by which time Guernsey were sixth and moved up to fifth with their first home match of the season on 06/10/2019, a 3-1 win over VCD Athletic. Up next was the trip to Herne Bay where 293 watched Bay send Guernsey to only their second defeat of the season with a 3-1 victory. The Channel Islanders had gained just three points from their last possible 18. Guernsey are four places and four points adrift of Herne Bay and have played two games more.

The Guernsey FC match preview: Guernsey reach a proud milestone this weekend as they gear up for their 400th competitive match. And it is perhaps fitting that the visitors Herne Bay are the first ever team GFC faced at this level. Ross Allen hopes to mark the occasion with his 250th goal for the Green Lions, while Tony Vance’s options are boosted by the return of attacking midfielder Seb Skillen and left-back Louis Graham. Steve Renouf could make his debut, but Kieran Mahon and Charlton Gauvain miss the clash through the injuries they sustained last weekend in the defeat to Whitehawk. Paris Pereira, Dave Rihoy remain sidelined with long-term injuries, while Thomas Dodds and Will Fazakerley are back in training and nearing returns. The Sarnians are without a win in six but victory would take them within a point of their opponents, who currently sit in seventh.

The Isthmian League website preview: Seventh place Herne Bay were six matches unbeaten when Burgess Hill Town arrived last weekend, but now need to start that run all over again after falling to defeat by the game’s only goal. They’ll be boarding an early plane to the Channel Islands as they face Guernsey, the Green Lions on their worst run of the season without a win in six matches.

Saturday 18th January 2020

Guernsey A W 3-2 (3-1)

Ansah p (45), Own goal 2 (40, 42) 809

Herne Bay: George Kamurasi, Ryan Cooper, Patrick Nzuzi, Laurence Harvey, Callum Adonis-Taylor, Danny Lawrence (Chris Saunders 80), Tushaun-Tyreese Walters (Ryan King-Elliott 90), Tom Carlton, Zak Ansah, Bola Dawodu (Dan Carrington 84), Keiron Campbell.

Guernsey: Callum Stanton, Frank Tobin, Jamie Dodd, Louis Graham, Tom Strawbridge, Tom De La Mare (Stephen Renouf), Liam Mahon, Carlos Canha, Keanu Marsh (Robbie Legg), Ross Allen, Matt Loaring.

Callum Adonis-Taylor returned at the heart of the defence in place of Dan Carrington with Danny Lawrence also returning replacing Joe Nelder.

Herne Bay’s play-off aspirations were back on track with a solid victory in the Channel Islands and produced their first double of the season, but things could well have been different if Guernsey had made the most of their possessional dominance after taking an early lead. In a bizarre last five minutes of the first half the ball hit the back of the Green Lions’ net three times. A penalty in the second period gave Guernsey an opportunity to get back into the game but they failed to capitalise. Ben Smith: “After a slow start I thought we were outstanding. 70% of the game we were totally dominant. Generally, they (Guernsey) are a technically gifted side that keep good possession of the ball. Once we got a goal, we beat them at their own game.”

Right from the kick-off Tushaun-Tyreese Walters was played through by Zak Ansah but was denied by Callum Stanton in the Guernsey goal. Straight down the other end in the third minute George Kamurasi saved well from Ross Allen, Matt Loaring was first to react and from a seemingly impossible angle squeezed the ball past the keeper. Walters and Tom Carlton both went close for Bay before mid-way through the half Allen’s cross to Keanu Marsh was cut out, but the ball fell to Carlos Canha, who steadied himself before firing at goal from the angle. Kamurasi saved the effort but the ball bounced off one of his team-mates and rebounded towards goal. Kamurasi stuck out a hand to claw the ball out, with the assistant referee deeming that the ball did not cross the line despite the protests of the home side and the fans behind the goal. The home side continued to press forward without looking like adding to their score and were heading into the break with the lead.

After Stanton had produced a great save from a Bola Dawodu header from Laurence Harvey’s cross he game turned on its head. On 40 Walters’ shot struck the bar, hitting the back of stopper Stanton on the way down and rolled into net. Two minutes later Tom Strawbridge from a Dawodu cross, under no pressure, spectacularly put the ball beyond his keeper. Into time added on and Walters was brought down in the box by Canha for Ansah to step up score his 8th league penalty of the season and his third against Guernsey in this campaign. Stanton, perhaps, should have done a little better.

A somewhat disjointed second half saw Guernsey pull one back with 20 minutes left on the clock. Callum Adonis-Taylor’s clumsy tackle on Allen was ignored by the referee but his assistant was vigorously waving his flag. Allen netted from the spot for his 250th Guernsey goal. The Green Lions threw everything forward in the closing stages but found a tight-knit Bay defence in great form. The defeat for the home side extended their run without a win to seven games whilst Herne Bay had lost just once in their last eight. The attendance of 809 was the highest out of Bay’s seven visits to Footes Lane.

Ben Smith continued: “They were always going to start the second half well, always trying to catch you. Everything is in their favour when you travel over to them, but today we were brave on the ball. After we went a goal down, we showed some bravery and moved the ball well. The penalty against us was very soft, but we showed character then at 3-2. Suddenly you heard their crowd, you didn’t hear them up until then, and then they were pushing, and we stayed disciplined and made sure that we didn’t give any more mistakes away. Callum (Adonis-Taylor) recovered well from giving the penalty away and showed great character, it was a good learning curve for him as a young lad. We are full of confidence at the moment. A home and away double, lovely, there are a good side so to do the double over them, we’ve done well. I thought we had a better balance to our side than they did, which was similar to the first game. The players were down last week, losing after such a good run was disappointing, especially their goal, we knew it wasn’t going to be our day. To bounce back with three points puts us back in the mix again and with other results going our way it has been a good day all round.”

At the half-way stage of Bay’s season only goal difference is keeping Herne Bay out of the play-off places but there are just ten points separating the 13 sides in 4th to 16th positions. Hastings United, Ashford United, and possibly Whitehawk, look secure in the top five but the remaining two places are very much up for grabs.

Home Chichester City

The club was established in 2000 as a merger of Chichester City and Portfield and was originally named Chichester City United. Both clubs were in Division One of the Sussex County League, with the new club taking their place in the division. They were Division One champions in 2003/04. In 2009 the club was renamed Chichester City. The league was renamed the Southern

Combination in 2015, with Division One becoming the Premier Division. In 2018/19 the club were Premier Division champions, earning promotion to the Isthmian League. In their first season at Step Four Chi got off to a flying start, topping the table in the middle of September after five matches. Defeat to lowly Three Bridges followed and then in just over a month they had eight outings, all in cup competitions, and the inactivity saw them slip down to mid-table. It was in the FA Cup that they saw their greatest success, beating Erith Town, Bridon Ropes, Chalfont St Peter, Hartley Wintney, Enfield Town and Bowers Pitsea which saw them reach the First Round Proper. There was one bye up for grabs and being the last name out of the hat City progressed without playing. Tranmere Rovers ended their FA adventure in front of 4,370 with a 5-1 victory but by then over £157,000 had been banked. Following the return from Merseyside fortunes took a dip and three league and cup games were lost and two drawn, but they have revived with two wins and a draw from their last three. Chichester are seven places and six points behind Bay but have two games in hand.

Ben Smith: “Bola (Dawodu) and DL (Danny Lawrence) had to come off at Guernsey so could be doubts for next week, Chichester and Hastings. We had lads come on, Saundo (Chris Saunders) and Carra (Dan Carrington) worked their socks off in the middle, so if we have players missing there are like-for-like changes we are looking at.”

On a heavy pitch beside the Newhaven Quay with small ships’ masts on the horizon and the Dieppe ferry basking in the January sunshine, Herne Bay sunk Newhaven nearer to the possible depths of relegation. It wasn’t entirely plain sailing though in the opening 20 minutes as Bay battled to get to grips with the boggy surface in this tired stadium. Kate Foster struck the bar with a flighted free kick before Lauren Smith latched on to a ball over the top to give the hosts the lead. But Bay, who harbour hopes of a top three finish this season, went through the gears to register their best league win of the season. New signing Jordan Langstone made her mark with a double on debut and Chloe Woolaway will be the next recipient of an engraved commemorative wine glass for her hat-trick. Woolaway’s first strike gave Herne Bay an unassailable 4-1 lead at the interval.

After the break, Bay continued where they had left off in the first half. Four more goals struck with regularity bolstered the Bay’s goal difference, always handy in a tight jostling for position at the top of the table, and also bolstered confidence heading for the run in which includes a cup semi-final. The adjacent Newhaven Marine railway station was this week scheduled for closure. Herne Bay’s season is, by contrast, far from over.

"It took as a while to come to terms with the boggy and bumpy pitch but once we did we were superb", said manager Howard Pearce, "we are starting to push on now and every player out there today did their job really well".
