By Randy Doolittle, HPCA Board President
The Board is please to announce the hiring of Bill Crusselle as Interim Club Manager. Bill has taken an active role and started December 7, 2015.
The HPCA Board approved the search firm, GSI Executive Search, Inc. out of St. Petersburg. GSI has already commenced its task of finding a permanent General Manager for Heritage Pines. GSI has the task of vetting all candidates and to provide Heritage Pines with five finalists. The Board then will work on the five resumes and narrow the list to two finalists. The two finalists will then make a personal visit to Heritage Pines for a formal inter-view. We expect this process to be completed in March or April 2016.
The management transition is working smoothly and all Christmas events along with the Thanksgiving dinner were a huge success and we have to thank our staff for making this happen. Further, Michael Russell, Events Coordinator will commence full time as Events Coordinator starting January 1st.
FROM THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS

I hope that everyone had a very enjoyable holiday and that you are looking forward to the new year, Since December 7, I have been here at Heritage Pines as your new Interim General Manager and I have really appreciated the warm and friendly response that I have received, I am living in the community which allows me to spend a great deal of time each day at the club working with the staff and attending as many committee meetings as possible. I will be going home to Palmetto, Fla. each week for a day or so, schedule permitting, to spend time with my wife Mary Jane.
December was a very busy month here at the Club and around the community with all the holiday

events and activities. The staff and I will be working closely together trying to figure out ways to enhance the residence experience here at Heritage Pines. This will include staff training in many areas and finding ways to bring our residents into the club more often in the new year.
Hopefully this year you will see many improvements and experience a Warm Welcome, Magic Moments, and a Fond Farewell each and everytime you visit the club.

GOLF COURSEGROUNDS DEPARTMENT
We have had a busy fall preparing the course and common areas for the winter months. Thanks for all the positive comments and support as we continue to augment our planting beds with additional color. Our Request For Proposal has been sent out to several Landscape Architects to assist us in developing a master plan to improve the overall aesthetics of the community.
We are looking forward to implementing the plan next spring after an architect has been chosen. We'll keep you posted. The course continues to improve as we have been actively spraying late season weeds and applying fertilizers to promote healthy turf as we move into the winter months. Our pigment application program for greens and fairways has yielded

MARY GIELLABy
Hi Heritage Pines, Wes and I hope everyone had a wonderful Holiday. We know the children at Mary Giella did; from Santa day at school, coming to sing and having lunch, and how special the Sportsman’s club made it by giving four very needy children bikes and helmets. All the people that brought gifts for the children the gifts were so numerous and outstanding. We even had one very special lady who not only bought clothing but took the time to make five blankets and hats for the five children she took. So many special people who gave me beautiful things for the children, Wes and I were so happy for so many special children. Thank you to all that give us food each week, it is so needed. Wes and I will continue the food drive until school lets out for the summer. So please continue to drop food in the barrel in the lobby. We take it once a week. Once again thank you all for all that you do for these very needy children.

Everyone's vision can change with age. Some changes are normal, but losing one's vision is not a normal part of getting older. Healthy Vision Institute will be visiting Heritage Pines to provide complimentary screenings to residents. With age, everyone is at a higher risk of developing glaucoma, macular degeneration, cataracts, and other eye-related diseases. There are no early warning signs or symptoms before they become serious.
Affordable Hearing has been providing this complimentary service to our residents for a couple years now. We strongly recommend signing-up, as the time slots usually go fairly quickly. This is a complimentary clinic for all residents of Heritage Pines to take advantage of. Some of the services being provided include: Video Otoscopy examination to check for Ear Wax, Ear Wax Removal, Hearing Screening, Clean and Check Hearing Aids, One Complimentary Pack of Hearing Aid Batteries.

This is a follow-up NOTICE to the December 2015 article in THE PINES pertaining to the Housing for Older Persons Act [HOPA] which stated "Your household may be selected to be part of the sample group that will be used to verify that Heritage Pines Community Association (HPCA) is in compliance with . . . HOPA regulations. These regulations allow Heritage Pines to retain our 55+ Adult Community status and the benefits that status provides."
Starting on either Saturday, January 23rd or 30th, the Audit Committee, by direction of the Board of Directors, will select a sample of households and verify that a member of each of those households meets the age requirements of HOPA. The process is simple – if you are selected, you will be asked to provide proof of age [drivers license, Florida Identification Card, etc] for an occupant of the household that is over 55 years of age. Your cooperation with the Audit Committee Volunteers will be greatly appreciated. Please review the December 2015 issue of THE PINES for additional background information.

The Community/Memorial Tree Program provides the opportunity for our residents to purchase a tree in memory of a loved one or friend. Trees may also be purchased to honor a person or because you wish to donate one in your name to beautify our community. They can also be purchased as a gift, perhaps a birthday or anniversary idea. Prices vary according to the type and size of tree. Residents may choose a general location for a donated tree which can be on the golf course, along the main boulevard or in other areas of the community. The final placement of each tree will be approved by Heritage Pines maintenance facilities. Trees will be planted during the months of March/April and October/November. Please plan your purchase during the preceding months. The Community/Memorial Tree Program is headed by Linda O'Leary. Please contact Linda at 819-9207 for pricing information.
A map showing the location of all donated trees is located in the hallway by the Magnolia Room. Also, there is a book at the front desk of the clubhouse listing information about the many trees planted throughout our community. Each page includes the names of the honoree(s), sponsor(s), tree location and type of tree. Residents may look through this book as desired.
PACKAGES FOR THE TROOPS program has been such a wonderful success. Eight packages went out to our soldiers for the holidays. The committee can not thank the community enough for their wonderful support of this worthy program.

A revised listing of products needed for the packages is located on the donation box in the front lobby at the HP Clubhouse. Please feel free to take a listing sheet for your future reference.
Thank you so much for the items that are being donated every day. Without the generous residents of Heritage Pines, our project could not exist. We can not thank you enough for all the wonderful items and money that Heritage Pines residents have donated. We are truly a loving and caring community.

Again the committee is so very overwhelmed with the wonderful donations to TOYS FOR TOTS. As in previous years the amount of toys received has been awesome. With all that is going on in the world it is so heartwarming to live in a community so full of love and caring.
In March 2016 the Committee will be sponsoring a CASINO NIGHT Fundraiser for St. Jude's Children's Hospital. More details will be available after the holidays but if you would like to help please contact Lynn Aigotti 727-862-6404. Among other jobs we will need people to solicit local businesses to raise funds to support this fun evening.
On December 7th a wreath making workshop was taught by Marcia Henry, a Heritage Pines resident. Approximately ten ladies created beautiful wreaths for their front door. A big thank you to Marcia for contributingher time and talents for thisfun workshop. The wreath pictured was created by Hope Bottersworth. Again, thank youto the community for their wonderful support.
LIFESTYLE COMMITTEE cont’d
By Nancy Niarchos, Chairperson
The Lifestyle Committee volunteers for THE PACKAGES FOR THE TROOPS have shipped nine Christmas packages in December, and will ship another nine packages to our brave and selfless military personnel the third week of January.
We are happy that two of our soldiers have been sent home to celebrate the holidays with their families. Although these two soldiers were brought home safe and sound, we gained three new names of courageous men who are overseas defending us here in the U.S.
We have received e-mails and phone calls from the soldiers and families. Our troops love the packages and are very grateful for your generosity. They share the packages with their fellow military; they are truly selfless and caring.
Do you have a son, daughter, grandson, granddaughter, niece, nephew, cousin or family of your best friend, who is serving overseas? Please call or e-mail us. We would love to treat them to special boxes of much needed items.
We not only need products, but monetary donations are needed in order to pay for our shipping costs. Each box we ship costs $15.90 in postage. Won't you please sponsor one soldier for one month and donate the cost for shipping? If everyone in HP donated just $1.00 a month, we would never need to ask you again. You can donate right at the Clubhouse front desk, just tell the girls "I WANT TO DONATE TO THE TROOPS".

Hazardous Waste Day – March, 2016. Remember to save all your old paint, lawn chemicals, large batteries, electronics such as computers, monitors and small and large TV's. This is a once a year project the Environmental Issues committee is committed to sponsoring and has the support of Pasco County. This material should not be dropped in the Green Fiber recycling containers. Our community is at risk of losing a great asset to us if we have residents that continue to place Hazardous Waste material in our recycling.
We are paid for the material collected by Green Fiber, which we reinvest into our community by placing park benches around the community as well as maintaining Gazebo Park. The material is then made into Blown-In insulation for homes. What a wonderful way to recycle and avoid a huge landfill. Those who recycle, keep up the good work. For those of you who haven't recycled, give it a try!
It's Time to Count!! The Environmental Issues committee has once again asked our trash haulers (Progressive Waste Solutions) to count the number of bins at the curb on recycling day. They will be counting in the months of January, February and March. Remember it is always the 2nd and 4th Wednesday of each month. For January that means pick-up will be on the 13th and the 27th. Let's see if we can beat last year's numbers. If you need more information about recycling, you can ask for one of our handouts at the front desk.
RECYCLING IS THENAME OF THE GAME!!

Can I Have Beautiful Flowers With Reclaimed Water?
Florida-Friendly Landscaping (FFL) means using low-maintenance plants and environmentally sustainable practices. Learn how you can have a beautiful landscape that could save you time, energy, water and money while protecting our future.
Florida-Friendly Landscape becomes an asset to the environment, protecting natural resources and preserving the state's unique beauty. Recognizing the home landscape as part of a larger natural system will help you make sound decisions in creating a Florida-Friendly yard using reclaimed water. Reclaimed water costs less than most other water sources. It reduces fertilizer use, as some nutrients like nitrogen and phosphorus remain in the water; it reduces disposal into waterways, which can help reduce nutrient loads in bays and rivers and it is a sustainable and cost effective water supply. It also reduces stress on drinking water supplies.
Many lovely plants can do well with reclaimed water, Blue Porterweed, Caladium, Crape Myrtle, Ixora, Pentas, Rose, Bird of Paradise, Croton, Daylilies, Gerbera Daisy, Liriope, Pampas Grass, Society Garlic, Southern Magnolia. And then a wonderful variety of plants that are completely tolerant of reclaimed water are Bougainvillea, Coontie, Dahoon Holly, Dwarf Oleander, Hibiscus, Lantana, Mondo Grass, and Pittosporum.
If your interest is piqued, you can also use the on-line guide to FFL or contact the University of Florida Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences at fyn.ifas.ufl.edu for “The Florida Friendly Landscaping Guide to Plant Selection and Landscape Design” and more wonderful information. Happy Planting!
Just a few of the wonderful plants you can have in your yard with reclaimed water!

GREETINGS and a Happy New Year to all. Heritage Pines is a great place to live and with your help let's keep it safe and accident free for 2016. The date for our next Safety Committee Meeting is January 12, 2016 at 9:30 a.m. in the Craft Room. Please come and share your concerns and ideas with the committee.
As you know we are in the busiest time of our season and therefore, it is important that our residents, their guests, staff members and vendors remember to slow down, be aware of our surroundings, drive safely and comply with State and County traffic laws, and the Association Rules and Regulations. Posted speed limits and traffic signs are to be observed. Anyone not complying per rules and laws may be subject to citation, fines, revoking of pass, escorted off the Community Properties and/or subject to trespass warnings (see Violations, Fines and Suspensions in Rules and Regulations).
As a courtesy to others please observe parking rules. All vehicles must park in designated parking areas not obstructing sidewalks, driveways, dumpsters, fire hydrants, access for emergency vehicles. Also do not block entrances to Community Facilities or Property and OBSERVE THE NO PARKING IN FIRE LANES AT THE CLUBHOUSE. Street parking is permitted between the hours of 7:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. No overnight street parking is permitted (see Rules & Regulations for additional parking information).
Once again I would like to remind everyone to carry their Heritage Pines Identification Card with them at all times as stated in Rules and Regulations. Also if you are going out of town be sure to fill out an Away Notification Form. Thank you for continuing to keep Heritage Pines a safe place to live; and once again, a Happy New Year!

CERTCommunity Emergency Response Team
Pasco County Office of Emergency Management recommends this excellent 6-minute video, "RUN, HIDE, FIGHT," which is prepared by FEMA and has some great information regarding responding to a terrorism attack. It is available at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=isGLjMwqWno.
On Thursday, February 18th the Heritage Pines CERT Team will be holding an action packed "simulated" emergency in Pine Ridge Village. All current CERT members and volunteers, as well as anyone interested in seeing the CERT Team in action, is invited. In addition we need residents who can play the roles of "victims." Please contact either Tom Cegla ([email protected] 952-435-7755) or Marge Warren ([email protected] 727-868-0543) if you can volunteer for this very important exercise or you would like additional information.
If you are interested in taking the CERT Basic Course, which will be held by the Pasco County Office of Emergency Management, Wednesday evenings between January 27 and March 16, 2016 with a final exercise on Saturday, March 20 please contact either Lori Bushway ([email protected]) or Steve Sumner ([email protected]). The course will be held at Holiday Lake Villas Community Center, 3931 Sailmaker Lane, Holiday.

LONG RANGE COMMITTEECompleted and Approved by Long Range Planning Committee - Chair, Pat Liston
The Long Range Planning Committee gathers data to identify the ongoing needs, culture and strategic future of Heritage Pines. They strive for transparency. They gather both quantitative and qualitative data. Both raw data and synthesized data are shared with the community. The Long Range Plan 2016 “The Best Way To Predict the Future….Is To Create It!” condensed their findings to two strategic issues: Enhance Community Value and Maintain a Fiscally Sound Environment.
The strategic issue regarding “The Aging Community” continues to be of high importance. With the help of community representatives, a comprehensive survey was completed November 6, 2013. There were 1664 survey responses which were sealed and sent to Pasco/Hernando State College for analysis. The major finding is the age of our residents of Heritage Pines form a perfect bell curve with the age 71 in the center. This will be the relevant quantitative data guiding future planning.
In April 2015 a SWOT (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, threats) analysis was completed by 92 residents who volunteered to participate. The raw data was posted on the website and was used by some committees in their planning. The chart below was derived by taking the most frequent responses and listing them under four categories. The four categories arose from the analysis of the internal and external threats and opportunities articulated by this outstanding group.
SECURITY & SAFETY PROTECTING OWNER INVESTMENT FINANCIAL SUSTAINABILITY UTILIZATION OF COMMON OWNERSHIPOF GROUNDS, CLUBHOUSE, AMENITIES
Heritage Pines is a safe community.
Ongoing training of staff is encouraged.
CERT preparation and training highly valued in light of exposure to tornados, hurricanes and floods.
Outside events could be offered with paying Heritage Pines security staff to increase their pay.
Many residents don't feel safe driving on Highway 19. Support for transportation options for appointments, groceries, etc. with cost to user is option to explore.
Enforcement of rules for speeders within Heritage Pines needs to be studied.
Proximity to airports, medical facilities and fire station next door ensures fast response for emergencies.
Internal security monitoring enhances Heritage Pines as safe place to live.
Lack of vision.
Use of data from previous studies done in past needs to be utilized.
Owners support for numerous charities and activities demonstrate caring people who want to make a difference.
No strategic plan.
Poor utilization of common resources increases exposure for present owners and future buyers. Properties have been devalued due to past sinkholes and economic crisis without specific intervention plans to capitalize on new growth in Pasco county and surrounding area.
Many partnerships with Pasco County required, some are in place and could be strengthened.
Ongoing needs of protecting rights of all is necessary e.g. no discrimination because of age, disability, etc.
Capitalize on aging demographic while marketing to younger owners.
Heritage Pines is financially secure.
Regular outside activities has reduced revenue stream.
Reserve funds are secure but capital projections are not.
Revenue streams are not sustainable or well understood.
Future stability threatened by annual process for establishing budgets and outcomes attained.
Risk analysis needs to be completed in order to ensure a successful sustainable economic future for Heritage Pines.
Ongoing turnover of staff requires increased costs over time and negative impact on culture of the community. Present staff are valued for being caring, knowledgeable and helpful.
Number of amenities is a strength but adding or improving amenities is not an option within present budgets.
Aging community results in underutilization of Clubhouse.
Kitchen has been expanded and updated so is better equipped for doing outside events at true costs rather than at amenity costs. This would bridge financial gaps and improve income for employees.
Private golf course use needs to be optimized. Course can't be open for the public or would be heavily taxed as a public business.
Clubhouse use and size is over utilized at times which leads to crowding and cancellations. Clubhouse is underutilized at times due to number of residents who do not attend events or eat in the dining room.
Many owners have dogs and a dog park would enable greater socialization among owners who may not utilize other amenities.
More room, but the right room to address needs and interests of residents based on both aging demographics as well as next generation owners required. Divisive communication among residents increases sense of entitlement which builds inequities.
Range of amenities promotes healthy active living for residents able to participate. Good value for costs.

The Long Range Planning Committee's next steps is to facilitate focus groups. They also research ideas to interpret data collected from focus groups in order to provide direction to Heritage Pines. New residents will be invited to our first focus group. We have 198 new residents living in 125 new homes in the 2015 year so their input will certainly be dynamic. Again, the data from our focus group will be shared with our community and guide future planning. The Long Range Planning Committee extends to everyone our warmest wishes for 2016.

Are you out of town, travelling, or just plain busy when tickets for a major event go on sale? No worries, Heritage Pines is now proudly offering a “Will-Call” procedure for those residents who are unable to purchase tickets the day they go on sale. The events and shows at Heritage Pines have become incredibly popular. So much so, that we are booking many events and shows with back to back performances. Tickets are selling on the first day they go on sale! It goes without saying, that the Clubhouse has become the hub of social activity within our community.
“WILL CALL” TICKET PROCEDURE
Here is how it works:
1. Email [email protected] with the following information:
a. Your Name
b. Your Phone Number (the best one to contact you on)
c. Your address within Heritage Pines
d. The event you want tickets for
e. How many tickets you want
f. Your member number
g. And most importantly, you must include the following phrase in your email: “Through this email, I authorize Heritage Pines to charge my member account for the number of tickets requested. I understand that this charge will show on my monthly statement.”
2. Click Send! – it’s that easy...
3. Now, here are a few follow-ups:
a. Will-call tickets will be purchased AFTER all residents who have “lined-up” on the day of and received their tickets.
b. Only ten tickets can be purchased per resident account.
c. Tickets will be purchased in the order they are received.
d. We cannot accommodate residents who wish to be seated with anyone else, tickets will be sold to the first available seats.
4. Tickets can be picked up at the front desk at a time that is convenient for you!
We hope this added service comes as a benefit to you all!

By Joy Stefany, Chairperson Handicap Committee
Happy New Year from the Handicap Committee! We would like to welcome Roy Dulsky as our newest member to the Heritage Pines Golf Handicap Committee. Roy is the representative from the HPMGA.
Now is the time for all of us to pay for our pre-paid golf fees for 2016 as well as for GHIN. GHIN is the computation service used by Heritage Pines to establish and maintain handicap information. It is a requirement to have a handicap in order to participate in league, couples as well as other events – i.e. Village Tournament, etc. It is also a requirement to POST ALL ELIGIBLE SCORES. If you have an 18 hole handicap and only play 9 holes, POST the 9 hole score. The GHIN system will keep track of these scores and combine with the correct rating/slope to make an 18 hole score.
If you are changing from a 9-hole handicap to 18-hole, now is the time to make the change. Please see Rick Weber, in the ProShop for making this change.
As you are making your New Year's Resolutions, add posting scores to your list. It is an easy resolution to keep.
Starting December 1, 2015 golf agreement packages will be available for pick up at the front desk or in the pro shop. Please complete, sign and return to front desk. If you are paying by check, you may attach to pre-order paperwork, but we will hold until January 4, 2016 to deposit. Remember as always when paying by check you will receive free (non-resident) guest round passes based on your membership type. Credit card payments cannot be processed until January and do not earn free rounds. You may also pre-order by email to: [email protected]. Include your name, account number, and the type of golf package you wish to purchase. Please include a telephone number in case we have any questions.
Official golf sales will be from January 4 – January 15, 2016, Monday – Friday, from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. Pre-orders are not necessary, but without doing so you will have to return at a later time to pick up your cards and stickers. Please help us to make our annual sales as smooth as possible for you and pre-order today!
Thank you, HERITAGE PINES MANAGEMENT

Tree of Angels – On Wednesday December 2nd the LGA and MGA co-sponsored the 4th annual “Tree of Angels” event to brighten Christmas for some needy children who attend the Shady Hills Elementary School. Thanks to the very generous members of the LGA and MGA the event was a great success. We were able to provide a Merry Christmas for 92 children. Shady Hills Staff did a presentation on the school and the needs of some of their students. Approximately 90 people were in attendance enjoying great hors d'oeuvres and libations and all seem to have a great time.

18-HOLE “PAR”TICULARSLOOKING BACK on some highlights of the past year; Our ladybug Invitational in May was hugely successful with 128 participants. On October 20th we hosted a joint social with the Niners, “Fall into Golf.” Betty Loy was the winner of the two-day Stroke Play Championship in October with a two-day total of 173 gross.

Niners greet 2016 with a new Board prepared to take on a full agenda. As always, new committees are being formed and all golfers are invited to take part in the planning and accomplishment of our future schedule of events. New ideas are always welcome – remember what Mom always said, “Many hands make light work.” It's true and our league's social calendar proves it! If you have a special talent you'd like to share or you just want to become more involved with the Niners' organization – sign-up sheets are always available at pre-golf meetings and in the pro shop folder.
As a result of elections conducted on November 17th, our new officers are as follows:
President – Nancy Beckwith Vice-President – Mary Lucas
Secretary – Gracie Ellis Treasurer – Debi Benson
A big thank you to the previous board - Nancy Suter, Barbara Martini, Lynn Lampe and Cathy Stoehs for their hard work and dedication to the Niners Organization.
Our Nine and Dine group did not meet in December, but will host Wellington golfers in January. Contact Gracie Ellis for more information.
The 2015 Niners Awards Program took place on December 18th. After our luncheon, Nancy Suter began by thanking members of the Board and all golfers in the Niners' league . It goes without saying that we, in turn, thanked her for her dedication and friendship and wished her well in her new home. Awards were given to golfers in all four flights as well as the black tee players.
“Broke Fifty” pins were presented to Carol Beatty, Claudell Galea, Sheila Martin, Sally Coppola, Christine Lyon and Gini Reinhold. “Broke Forty” pins were presented to Janet Allison, Rhonda Gibson, Merry McGuire and Nancy Suter. Twenty six Ringer awards were announced. Sixty six Chip-In pins were presented, twenty four Pars, forty four Birdie pins and a special pin was awarded to Judy Brischke for her Eagle on hole #6 ! See the Niners' beautiful bulletin board for a more complete list of categories and winners.
Maggie Shell's merry little elves have out-done themselves this year, wrapping and stuffing eighty eight Christmas bundles containing complete outfits of clothing for the children of the Mary Giella Elementary School. This has been an effort of the Niners for several years. The kids offer their appreciation and thank yous by visiting Heritage Pines and singing beautiful
the LGA and MGA leagues. 91 “Angels” submitted their requests to Santa. Also members of the faculty provided a slide presentation showcasing the greatly improved school facility. Through the generosity of members from both leagues these children will experience a Christmas that they might not otherwise have.
The third annual Snowball Showdown was held on Friday, December 4th. It was a mixed format – Scramble, Scotch Doub le , Bes t Ba l l and combined score of a two person team (men and women) followed by a pasta lunch. The fifty-fifty drawing to benefit the Shady Hills K-8 school was won by Bonnie Cook. Bonnie showed the true spirit of the season by donating her winnings back to the fund.

Joints, tendons and ligaments deteriorate with age and injury. Medical intervention may then become necessary to lessen pain or improve the condition. Elderly patients sometimes cannot take the risks of extensive major surgery or are reluctant to undergo joint replacements. Athletes also seek to achieve the maximum result with minimum down time.
Platelet rich plasma (PRP) contains huge reservoirs of biologically active proteins and growth factors that are vital in accelerating tissue repair and regeneration for non-operative treatment of degenerating joints and or injuries. Stem cells taken from your own bone marrow and/or fat may also be used in conjunction with PRP. This combination of therapy injection into painful, degenerative or injured tissue can regenerate the tissue and is frequently effective in relieving pain. When used in the early stages of degeneration or injury this therapy may reduce the need for surgery before the damage progresses.
New, cutting-edge procedures are generally not covered by Medicare or commercial insurance companies. Therefore the cost of the treatment is at the expense of the individual. The cost and number of treatments required will vary based on the individual response to treatment.
The Institute of Interventional Pain Management under the guidance of Dr. Deborah H. Tracy is now providing PRP and Stem Cell Therapies for multiple conditions including: degenerative joint disease, tendonopathies, ligamentous sprain or tears, hair loss, facial rejuvenation, ischemic peripheral vascular disease and COPD.

We had two practices since we submitted our article for the Heritage Pines December newsletter as follows:
On November 20th we only had nine players present since this practice had a conflict with the ROMEO breakfast meeting which was also held on the same day. Several of our players opted to attend the ROMEO breakfast since one of our team members (Carl Benson) was giving a presentation at the breakfast. The following players participated in this practice: Al and Christine Grosso, Al Lang, Rich Mariotti, Jim Sankowich, Vince Depaola, Chuck Winzer, Paul Kanzenbach and Ric Layne. Everyone had two rounds of batting practice at 15 hits per round which meant there were 270 chances to practice catching balls in the field.
On December 4th the field was raked and the screen that protects the pitchers was installed by the Pasco County maintenance workers before all the players arrived. We again had a total of nine players there for this practice as follows: Bob Gardela, Ric Layne, Jeff Mariano, Chuck Winzer, Kevin McCrystal, Paul Kanzenbach, Al Grosso, Jim Sankowich and Rich Mariotti. We followed the same exact pattern as of the previous practice that allowed everyone to hit 30 balls which equated to 270 chances of fielding practice for those in the outfield.
Both turnouts were a little less than expected since some of our players had

ROMEO Breakfast Meetings:
December 11th, 2015: ROMEO Holiday Breakfast for Couples. Note: As you can see, this breakfast was not held on our normal last Friday of the month. We had 80 members and their significant others in attendance at this Holiday breakfast.
We distributed ROMEO shirts to our four new members i.e.; Michael Moore who lives on Grand Club Drive, Nat Warren who lives on Sprindrift Loop, J.P. Mullen who lives on Webster Grove Drive and Myron Wright who lives on Bent Pine Drive. One other new member signed up today i.e.; Bob Covell who recently moved here from Berlin, MA. Bob will be getting his ROMEO hat and shirt at the February 29th breakfast. Holiday music was provided during the breakfast meeting by Ralph and Janette Pauley.

February 26th, 2016: ROMEO Breakfast

ASK THE TECHIEQ: Recently my Yahoo email had been hacked. My email account was being used to send SPAM messages to people on my Contact List. I called Yahoo at a number I found on the Internet to request assistance in changing my password. I allowed the person to take over remote control of my computer. He told me that my computer, printer and Internet connection were all infected and I needed to pay several hundred dollars to have these problems corrected. I hung up and contacted you for assistance. Was I actually speaking to Yahoo support or was this a scam?
A: This was definitely a scam. The free email providers: Yahoo, Hotmail, Gmail don't normally provide phone support. They typically provide support via their web sites or via email from their technical support departments. If you actually reached a Yahoo support person they would not have charged you to change your password. They also would not have done any troubleshooting of your computer or printer.
One must be careful when searching the Internet for contact information. Anyone can create a web site representing themselves as affiliated with a technology company. This is the case with technical companies but also with banks, credit card companies and other financial institutions. If you are looking for contact information the best place to look is at their web site. Look for a CONTACT US link somewhere on the site.
If you ever allow someone to access your computer remotely and feel they may not be who they say they are, I recommend you have your computer checked for viruses and other monitoring software. This type of software may be used for unauthorized access to your computer without your knowledge or permission.
Similarly, if you receive an unsolicited phone call from someone claiming to be from Microsoft, Symantec or Hewlett Packard telling you that they have detected problems on your computer and want to access your computer hang up immediately. This is DEFINITELY a scam.
Q: My computer is running slowly and I suspect it may be infected with a virus. My neighbor suggests I use Windows System Restore to correct this problem. Do you agree that this will fix my problem?
A: System Restore is a very powerful tool that I occasionally use to bring a troubled computer back to life. However this tool should be used ONLY as a last resort when all other corrective actions have failed. Depending on how far back the restore is done the system may not always complete the process successfully. I've seen systems that have been restored multiple times fail completely requiring replacement or Windows reinstallation.
If the System Restore appears successful, you should verify that the virus has been completely removed. Often the virus, if not completely removed, will reinfect the system again after a short period of time.

sentenced to 15 months at an infamous correctional facility, the well-heeled Smith College alumna is now an inmate – one of the millions of people who disappear “down the rabbit hole” of the American penal system. Heartbreaking, hilarious, and at times enraging, this real-life memoir offers a rare look into the lives of women in prison – why it is we lock so many away, and what happens to them when they're there.” Some questions to consider: 1) How do you feel Kerman's race, education, and socioeconomic status impacted her experience in prison? 2) What were some of the rituals that Kerman and other inmates used to help them get through the days? 3) After you've read this book, how successful do you think our present prison system is? 4) Should prisons be run by private, for-profit corporations as they are in some states? It is currently legal to make a profit imprisoning the mentally ill, poor, and addicted – but is it ethical?
Following the discussion, we will adjourn for lunch in the Dining Room. The books remaining on our schedule include:
February 24, 2016 The Fish that Ate the Whale by Rich Cohen, presented by Sue Wargo & Mary Lou Ballmann
March 23, 2016 The Nightingale by Kristin Hannah, presented by Deane King
April 27, 2016 The Pecan Man by Cassie Dandridge Selleck, presented by Pat Delamer

SPORTSMAN’S CLUB
BRIDGE GROUPS
Happy New Year! May 2016 be a year filled with good health, good times and great fun for you and your loved ones!
As a result of the elections at our December meeting, we are starting the new year with a new slate of officers. Our thanks to the outgoing officer team of Mary Ward, Jim Gosnell, Frank Scarfi and Bob Reichardt for a job well done. Our newly elected officers are: President - Jim Gosnell, Vice President - Howard Stringer, Treasurer - Skip Skinner and Secretary - Tom Squadrito. We wish our new officers a year of many successes and a rewarding year for the HPSC.
The Sportsman's Club meetings are held on the second Thursday of each month in the Magnolia Room at 11:00 a.m. This meeting usually lasts about an hour. Afterward, some enjoy lunch together in the Clubhouse. Our January meeting is scheduled for Thursday, January 14th.
Club activities include: bocce, pistol and rifle target shooting, clay target shooting, horseshoes, fresh and salt water fishing, biking, canoeing and kayaking. Everyone with an interest in these and other related activities is welcome to join us. Bocce players get together at 9 a.m. on Tuesday mornings at the bocce courts.
In alternating two week intervals, those who shoot trap, skeet, five stand and crazy quail form groups and carpool to either the Silver Dollar Shooters Club or to Robinson Ranch in Dunnellon on Wednesday mornings.
Car pools usually leave the community around 8:30 a.m. Silver Dollar and Robinson each offer traditional trap, and skeet shooting in addition to other shotgun games like crazy quail, and five stand which are also a lot of fun. Those needing a ride meet between 8:15 am and 8:30 a.m. in the parking lot across from the Clubhouse.
During January, the shotgunners will be shooting at Silver Dollar on the 6th and 27th, and at Robinson Ranch on the 13th and 20th. Rifle and pistol target shooters usually shoot at The Phoenix Gun Club on Wednesday or Friday mornings. Check out the Phoenix website for their range schedule.
Interested in doing some kayaking or biking? Give Howard Stringer a call (727-819-8059 or 727-204-0603). All suggestions and ideas for other outings and adventures are welcome. Let Jim or Howard know what you would like to do. All skill levels are welcome.
The Christmas Party was a great success. All who attended had a nice time dining and dancing to wonderful music. The Chinese Auction was a lot of fun and the money raised added $450 to our total charitable contributions for 2015. Thanks to Mary Ward for all her hard work in making it happen. Thanks also go to club members who donated items throughout the year for auction at the Christmas party.
A heartfelt THANK YOU to each of the eighteen local businesses that contributed to our charitable drive. In alphabetical order they are: Amanda's Pet Salon, Argentos, Bonefish Grill, The Cove, Diamond Nails, The Fireside at Heritage Pines, Frankie's Patriot BBQ, Heritage Pines Golf Club, La Bella Napoli, The Olive Garden, Perkins Restaurant, Phoenix Gun Club, Red Lobster, Robinson Ranch, Shrimp

Landing, Silver Dollar Shooters Club and Tito's Pizza. Please continue to utilize their services and thank them for their support when you do.
At our December meeting, charity donations totaling $1200 were approved. Varying amounts were given to the following organizations: Bushnell National Cemetery (Wreaths Across America program), Flights For Veterans (through the Fisher House – providing transportation to rehab centers for vets and their families), Veterans Independence Fund (providing tracked vehicles for disabled vets) and Brooksville K9 Partners For Patriots (training dogs for the military); and two local church affiliated Food Banks. Additionally the club donated four new bicycles to the children of the Mary Giella School. While we are not a fund raising organization, we are thankful to be part of these programs at Christmas time.
The annual club dues of $25.00 were due January 1st. If you haven't paid, please do so at our next meeting. A check, rather than cash, is the preferred method of payment. Make all checks out to the H P Sportsman's Club.

ANGELS IN THE PINES AND THE TOYMAKERSBy
As I write this for the January newsletter our two groups are preparing to start delivery to our children. It has been another successful year. The hat sets are lovely and colorful and patterns for the scraves are such fun ones. Our toys are the best year in designs and finishes. I can't be prouder to be part of such wonderful groups that work so hard all year round to bring joy to our local children.
With that Our Angels will be taking the month of January off for a long needed rest. And Our Toymakers will be returning the fourth Monday of January. But we ask you all to take note of our email blasts for a Toymaker-Angel brunch a way for us to end out a great year and kick start a new year. We invite all our members current and past ones and spouses and friends and supporters to join us for a fun fill time. Look for details to come. Thank you all for your support for a wonderful year.

Our trip to see "Kinky Boots" was successful. We offered a bus to the show and filled the seats. Hopefully we can offer bus service again. Please indicate on the sign up sheet that you are interested in securing a bus.
We have cancelled "Sound of Music" due to lack of interest. We have great orchestra seating for "Lion King" on Saturday, February 6th. Your check for full payment of $107 is now due. We try to accommodate your request to sit with friends but we need this information clearly stated in the Notes section of the sign-up sheet. Your arrows are distracting for the committee to read.
The production company is now requiring full payment within 90 days of the show. You must have your $25 deposit to secure
the tickets or I must return them timely to avoid being charged. The theatre club really enjoyed the Christmas Show at Show Palace to a sold out group of over 400 people. You're missing some great local shows just minutes from Heritage Pines. Sign up now for "Westside Story" on Saturday, January 16th. That's still $42.50 a ticket for show, dinner buffet and all taxes. Gratuities are extra. Your check payable to The HP Theatre Club can be left in the theatre book or dropped off at my home. Call Marcia Gerber at 819-1662 for questions. We are cancelling many of the shows at Ruth Eckerd Hall. Deposits are being returned. We must have 15 people interested in a show to secure a group discount. You can call the box office and secure your own tickets.
Join us for "The Rat Pack Together Again" on Sunday, Jan.17th for the 3:00 p.m. show. Tickets are $31 and we could meet for dinner afterwards. Also, an "Evening With the Atlantic City Boys" on Friday, February 12th will include a dinner buffet. Price is $45 each. If you like the music of the Jersey Boys, you'll enjoy this group.
I wish to send my thank you to all that helped with club business during this trying time. Gene will be missed.
Come socialize and meet new friends to reminisce old times at the Clubhouse on Friday, December 11th at 12:00 p.m. for lunch. If interested, please call Loretta Fulda at 727-697-2060 or Stephanie Nunziante at 727-860-4142.

Have you been meaning to check out a Bible Study here at Heritage Pines? We invite you to join us or just sit in on one of our meetings. We meet in the Magnolia Room from 9-11 every Monday and welcome women of every denomination. We are picking up where we left off last April in our study of Revelation beginning with a review of some key persons in this book.
We thought Revelation would be dull, but we women have found that to not to be the case. We have been greatly helped in our study by two guides: David Jeremiah's DVD's called Agents of the Apocalypse where he presents in understandable teaching of the Old and New Testament prophecy revealing “the end times” and John MacArthur's study guide on Revelation. If you have either avoided the study of Revelation or have plodded through it and it remains a mystery you will want to be a part of this “user-friendly” instruction.
The group meets every Monday in the Magnolia Room at 9-11. YOU are invited, so come and bring a friend! For more information contact Judy Peterson by phone 602-833-0646 or email: [email protected].
Come join us as we continue in our study of Matthew. We meet every Monday in the Magnolia room at 4:00 p.m. Men of all denominations and churches are welcome. So, if you enjoy studying God's word and fellowship with others, come sit in.
For additional information call Pete Karkheck at 869-2305 or e-mail at [email protected].

Tai Chi: Beginner – Tuesday at 8:30 a.m. in the PAC*
Advanced – Thursday at 8:30 a.m. in the PAC*
Qigong: Saturday at 8:30 a.m. in the PAC*
Playing Tai Chi / Qigong Rather Than “Working” At It
Most of us approach exercise as work. Something we need to do to get or stay healthy. Therefore, we usually have to motivate ourselves to get on the treadmill, go to the gym, or aerobics class. If something is fun, we look forward to doing it (like my wife can't wait to attend water aerobics).
Let's make Tai Chi & Qigong fun! You start Tai Chi to fix a problem; improve balance, help arthritis, lower blood pressure, etc. Let go of all that. Come to class and practice at home to breathe, loosen, and play. When you have fun, you keep coming, and keep practicing. All the benefits of Tai Chi and Qigong come over time; the movements evolve and deepen over time; and the process is an enjoyable one, with no pressure, no measurement, and no criticism.
How do you measure your progress in Tia Chi without any “ranking” system like Karate or Kung Fu? If you feel better, you are more relaxed, you get depressed less, and your balance improves; then that means your Tai Chi has gotten better.
The Saturday morning Arthritis class is still going. Come join us to find relief from the pain and stiffness in your fingers, wrists, elbows, shoulders, and knees due to Arthritis.
HAPPY NEW YEAR! MAY 2016 BE HEALTHY & HEARTY FOR YOU ALL!
Rich Cunha, 857-3044, [email protected]
TAI CHI CLASS
BIG BALLS! LITTLE BALLS! GREAT FOR YOUR PHYSICAL and EMOTIONAL HEALTH. So many sports that we choose to engage in involve balls. Heavy as a bowling ball, big as a basketball, or as little as a tennis, wiffle, ping-pong, billiards ball, the movements involved are good for your physical and emotional well-being.
Depending on the area in which you live, pickleball can be a great option for your physical fitness routine. Some have noted that playing pickleball has improved their memory, blood circulation, and energy levels, reduce stress and help with weight loss plans. According to an article on Livestrong.com by Ryan Gargulinski, the benefits go even further:
Although you're burning calories and boosting your mood, you are not putting yourself — or your joints — at high risk, according to Pickleball Canada. The Wiffle ball is fairly slow-moving and much lighter than its tennis ball cousin or its racquetball distant cousin. Even if you do get hit with it, you won't suffer the same severity of injury of a denser and faster ball. The courts are also about half the size of a tennis court, which means less running around than tennis, another factor that keeps the intensity low.
PLEASE JOIN US AT THE TENNIS COURTS ON WEDNESDAY’S AT 1:00 P.M. AND FRIDAY’S AT 6:00 P.M.
TABLE TENNIS a.k.a. PING PONG is yet another fantastic fun and exercise filled game. All levels of play are welcome. Please call Francine Raggi-Collins at 727-868-5152 if you are interested in playing competitively or just starting out.
Please join other Heritage Piner’s on the 2nd and 4th Saturday of each month at Spring Hill Lanes (19 north) at 6:45 pm. A really fun night.
Spring Hill Lanes charges Heritage Piners $2 per game on the 2ND AND 4TH SATURDAY of each month and the number of HP residents attending is different each time. Loretta Fulda has been kind and sends out a notification asking who plans to play on those particular Saturdays so that she can let Spring Hill Lanes set aside a specific number of lanes for "Saturday night Heritage Piners." If you would like to be added to Loretta's notices, please let her know. We attempt to keep it a healthy evening by heading out for a frozen yogurt treat when finished bowling. Of course, it is hard to resist the alluring scent of french fries coming from the snack bar! We have many HP non-bowlers who come just to watch and enjoy the camaraderie.

Redefining the Concept of Personalized Care
“His caring bedside manner and conservative treatment options put me quickly at ease…Dr. Higgins' staff complements him as well by presenting themselves as a well-oiled machine.” – Valerie C.
During the first appointment…unlike what I have experienced in other offices the nurse did not turn her back to me while asking questions but continued to smile and worked to maintain eye contact while writing notes for my chart. When Dr. Higgins entered the room, he answered all the questions I had, and many I had not thought to ask. I never felt rushed so he could get to his next patient or bullied into a particular treatment option.” – Kristen J.S.

Pines Glen residents once again worked together to
provide gifts to a needy family at Christmas. Cheryl Willis
organized this project that provided a very Merry
Christmas to a family with four children between the ages
of one and eleven. A group met at Cheryl's home to wrap
all the gifts and then Ron Burrows and Cheryl Willis
delivered the gifts to the family.
The entrance to Pines Glen was made bright and
beautiful for the holidays thanks to a donation from our
Village board along with individual donations from
several residents. Thanks to everyone who worked so
hard to make this happen with special thanks to Linda
Langevin who coordinated this project.
Our Christmas Dinner Dance was held at the Clubhouse
