    Task 3

    The Science Museum, who is part of the National Museum of Science and Industry is oneof the three large museum on Exhibition Road. It was build in 1857 under the Bennet Woodcroft,and today is one of the major attraction in London, attracting over 2.7 million tourists annually.

    Since 1 December 2001 it has been free to enter, but people may have to pay if they wantto visit the temporary exhibition.

    On 26 June, 1909 the Science Museum became an independent entity. The construction

    of East Block began in 1913 and it was designed by Sir Richard Allison. Over the years, theMuseum buildings increased: in 1961 the Centre Block was complete, then in 1980 theconstruction of the Lower and Upper Wellcome Galleries and the infill of the East Block wasdone and in 2000 the Wellcome Wing was complete.

    The Museum holds over 300.000 famous items, such as : Stephensons Rocket, PuffingBilly(the oldest steam locomotive), a working example of Charles Babbages Difference engine,the first jet engine, the first prototype ( draft model ) of the 10.000 years Clock of the Long Nowand documentation of the first typewriter. It also holds hundreds of interactive exhibits.

    The fourth and fifth floor are dedicated to medicine. The exhibit on the fourth floor is

    called ,, Glimpses of Medical History. There are many objects collected by Henry Wellcome but also reconstruction of the history of medicine. On the fifth floor are medical instrumentsfrom ancient days and from many countries.

    The Science Museum has a library who holds periodicals, early books and manuscriptsand is used by people worldwide. In 2007 the library was divided in two parts, the first is still atthe Imperial College in London and the second is now located in Wroughton.

    At Blythe House are stored the items that arent on display. The House has aconservation laboratory, a photographic studio and a quarantine area.

    The Science Museum opened the Dana Centre in November 2003. The centre is an urban bar and caf that was designed by MJP Architects.

    The Museum also organises a event named ,, Science Night, where 380 childrenaccompanied by adults are invited to spend the night sleeping in the museum galleries and in themorning they have breakfast and watch an IMAX film at the end.

    X&Y is an activity for children that have more than 16 years.There are also some special exhibiton, such as: 3D: Printing the future for age between 11 and 16+ Cosmos & Culture for age between 11 and 16+ Codebreaker Alan Turings life and legacy for age between 14 and 16+

    Reseach at the Science Museum aims to promote new ways of understanding theircollections, audiences and exhibitions. Their reseachers came from a range of academicdisciplines who engage with specific practices of the museum.

    In 2012 the Research & Public History Departament was established to support theacademic activities. They work with many university departaments and other museums, organiseconferences and workshops and apply for grant funding.
