“Kingdom Living: Life After Resurrection”

Are You Available?

We will continue in our year-long theme of Kingdom Living. Throughout Lent, we have focused on spiritual disciplines and “inner” growth. These disciplines have called for making ourselves available to God; spending time each day in His presence. God’s expectation of our availability, doesn’t end with our quiet time with the Father.

God expects us to be available to Him for His purpose and mission in the world! When you are actively living out your faith, two things happen. First, God does a good work in you, and He molds you through the experience of good works. Second, you offer a powerful witness to your community and the world. Actions speak much louder than words, and the fruit of a transformed life can be powerfully demonstrated in how you live.

In this sermon series, we will examine the early Church in Acts and discover the abundant blessings “Life After Resurrection” offers.

HAPPENIN’ @ FIRST

The Creation – Evolution Controversy Beginning April 7, Adult Ed, Sunday mornings.Coordinated by Larry Hasen & Ron Sanders, with team teaching from some of the scientific experts from FPC including Doug Cairns, Dr. Raymond Merrell, and Dr. Shawn Kurtz. One of the most profound statements found in the pages of the Bible appears in the very first verse where God declares that He alone is the Creator of both “the Heaven and the Earth.” Many today claim this statement is a myth.

Kaffee Klatsch - ReformatIn the last nine months, attendance to Kaffee Klatsch has dwindled to a number that it is not feasible to continue the program in its current format. The Senior Adult Ministry Team has decided to discontinue this program and will resume it in September of 2013 with a new format. If you have any suggestions, please contact Carolyn Mason, Harley Drollinger, Marv Becker, Francis Lockwood, or Dorothy Smith.

SPRING LUNCHEONWednesday, April 17 at Noon.First Presbyterian Church Garden Room. All women are invited to the annual Mabel Swan Spring Luncheon. Call the church office to RSVP. Cost is $5; no charge for Mabel Swan residents.

Praises & Celebrations!Do you have a praise or celebration you would like to share with your Church family? Have you had an answer to prayer? You are invited to use the yellow Communication Card (located in the pew rack) to write your one-sentence praise that will be shown during the offering the following week. Simply drop the card in the offering plate or leave it at the Connection Center in the Garden Room.

Church Officer Nominations for 2014The FPC Nominating Committee is requesting your suggestions for the next class of church officers that will begin their service in 2014. All candidates should live a Christ-centered life, be organized, be consistent and have a prayerful servant heart.

Elders (Serves a 3-year term) show passionate leadership practiced with a humble spirit and self-control. They are known to be reliable and well-thought-out individuals who seek God’s voice in resolving the issues before them. Deacons (Serves a 2-year term) should demonstrate strong gifts of empathy, compassion and intuition (while they have the boldness to enter into difficult interpersonal interactions). A Deacon should be a willing listener who seeks to discern the needs of the individuals they encounter and seek solutions within their reach. Nominating Committee (Serves a 1-year term) He/she should have a discerning spirit and a familiarity with a large number of the members of First Presbyterian Church. The process of selecting nominees will be a little different this year. We hope to collect multiple suggestions prior to the Sunday, May 5 deadline. We will begin the process by offering an informational meeting May 18 at 10:00a in the David Ferry Lounge. The duties and responsibilities of each office will be defined followed by a question and answer session. Nominees will be asked to affirm their willingness to continue their candidacy within the next week. Those wishing to continue will be invited to meet with the committee individually. Invitations to serve will be extended following the interviews.

Church officers provide a vital service in the body of Presbyterian Churches that benefit the Yakima Community.

TV BroadcastFPC is now broadcasting a previously recorded Sunday service on Charter Cable channel 21, from 9a-10a on Sunday mornings. It is our sincere hope that new people around the Yakima Valley, and existing listeners will join us, to hear the Good News of Jesus Christ as we transition into a more efficient and cost effective broadcast. DVD’s are also available for a $3 donation. House bound members can have a Deacon deliver a DVD at no cost.

...and a time to say farewell...

A Time for Everything

“For everything there is a season,

a time for every activity under heaven.

A time to be born and a time to die.

A time to plant and a time to harvest.

A time to kill and a time to heal.

A time to tear down and a time to build up.

A time to cry and a time to laugh.

A time to grieve and a time to dance.

A time to scatter stones and a time to gather stones.

A time to embrace and a time to turn away.

A time to search and a time to quit searching.

A time to keep and a time to throw away.

A time to tear and a time to mend.

A time to be quiet and a time to speak.

A time to love and a time to hate.

A time for war and a time for peace.”

Ecclesiastes 3:1-8

Thank you Pastor Jim for your faithful

ministering to us for these past 12

PASTOR JACK

Jack PeeblesSenior [email protected]

Pastor Jack

Dear FPC Community,

Ask not how your church can serve you - ask how you can be a part of God’s church serving our community!

Ok, this question is loosely based off of John F. Kennedy’s inaugural address of 1961. However, it is appropriate for our congregation as we shift into our year-long partnership with the Madison House.

We are calling this partnership, “Kingdom Living: From Our Seat to Spruce Street.” We have been praying for and planning this for over a year. The “big idea” is to wed together discipleship and service, and facilitate more opportunities for us to love and serve our neighbors! In

we are called to exist in relationship with others. In fact, we believe that God works at the speed of relationships, and it is through these relationships (with God and our neighbors) that the Yakima community will be transformed and God’s Kingdom will be expanded.

…through training and service… God is calling us to grow as disciples. This growth entails training and service (Ephesians 4:11-12). Like any major undertaking, the Christian faith necessitates education and practice. We all have to start somewhere, and we recognize that many have difficulty in taking the first steps. This partnership will provide opportunities for individuals and families to be put in positions to serve, regardless of their degree of spiritual maturity. The Madison House will serve as a training vehicle through which disciples can grow.

…as we love and serve each other. This partnership is mutually beneficial. Individuals and families will also have the opportunity to love and be loved. Essentially, we will be blessed as we are given the opportunity to live into what Christ has commanded (John 15:9-12).

The partnership gets kicked-off on Sunday, April 21, with an open house. On that Sunday, we will have one blended service at 9:30a, and then members are encouraged to head over to the Madison House for lunch, tours and other activities so we can get to know our neighbors! Transportation will be provided for those who need it.

In the coming weeks and months, we will be sharing with you other ways through which you can participate in this year-long partnership. For now, I leave you with the question we have asked and will continue to ask: Are you available…to love and serve our neighbors?

Living and loving for Him,

fact, we believe that you can’t be a disciple of Jesus without being involved in service to others! The entire membership of FPC will be encouraged to serve in some way, shape or form. This partnership is being co-chaired by Jake and Carla Kupp, and you can read

more about the ministry of the Madison House on page 8 of this newsletter.

The mission statement of the partnership is, “Transforming our community through training and service as we love one another.” We believe God is calling First Presbyterian Church to love and serve the community around the Madison House.

Transforming our community… God is calling us to be participants in His Kingdom beyond the walls of the church. Whether Jew or Gentile, poor or rich, white or Hispanic, there are no walls in Christ (Ephesians 2:11-22). As God exists in relationship (Father, Son and Holy Spirit),

CARE OF THE CHURCH - DEACONS

Jim

The time has come for me to say good-bye to First Presbyterian Church of Yakima. This day was planned some time ago, but it is hard to believe that it has arrived so soon. Moreover, the past twelve years have gone by too quickly. We know God brought us here at the right time, and now God is leading us to a new place, and new ministries to be shared in new ways. So, we obey His call and move on to Vancouver, Washington, where we continue to serve Him. I go with a bitter-sweet heart. I am excited to continue the ministry that God calls me to with a sense of energy and joy in serving Him. Betsy and I cherish the time spent with you all, and will miss you. Blessings to all of you as you continue to serve Him by ministering to the community of Yakima.Thank you and God Bless.

Do you know of all the wonderful things our Deacons do? After chatting with one I was surprised to discover all the ways they minister to our congregation and community. I became curious, and wanted to know more about the ministry, and I thought others may want to know too. If you have the same curiosity, read on.

The Deacons ministry at First Presbyterian Church is Biblically based. Acts 6:1-7 establishes the office of Deacons, ordaining them to minister to the sick, caring for the less fortunate, and bringing God’s Word to the people through service. So, our Deacons are ordained officers of the church serving the sick, serving the grieving, assisting those in need, and bringing God’s Word to the community of Yakima. They visit people in the hospital and visit those who are “home centered.” When it is known that one of our congregation members are hospitalized, they visit, encourage, and pray with the patient at the bedside. Upon request, Deacons will visit those who are “home centered” at least once a month, ensuring that they are cared for and being a friend to them and providing communion shortly after communion is served in the sanctuary. They will sometimes bring flowers and candy, take them shopping or even take them out for a treat.

The Deacons organize into three committees: Funeral Hospitality, Communion, and the Union Gospel Mission Team. When there is a funeral, the Deacons provide a reception for the family and their guests with sandwiches, coffee, punch, cookies, fruits and other comfort foods. Last year they served 36 receptions. Every Communion Sunday, the Deacons will set up the day before. They bake the bread, pour juice in all the small glasses, set the communion table, and after communion is served, gather all those small

glasses, wash them and put them away. Whew!! The Union Gospel Mission Team provides a worship service four times a year for the homeless and those who are in need at the Union Gospel Mission. They lead in music, read scripture and preach God’s Word to those who are assembled. The Deacons also provide Bibles to those who cannot afford their own, and they also help other agencies like Love INC, Calvary Rescue Mission and Madison House to reach out to those who are in need of shelter, food and assistance with utility bills.

All these things that the Deacons do are funded, not by the church budget, but by the generous donations from the congregation on Communion Sundays and other designated funds from the congregation. So, thank you to our congregation in supporting our Deacons.WELL DONE DEACONS AND THANK YOU!!!!

It is amazing to watch God at work, especially when you can look back and see how He has brought things together to expand His Kingdom.

Such is the case with Madison House. Back in the early 1980’s the old Madison Elementary School sat vacant. The Yakima School District was trying to sell the building and grounds for anywhere between $200,000 and $400,000. The then superintendent of schools, Dr. Dean Starr (a member of FPC) approached the Union Gospel Mission about purchasing the complex and turning it into a youth center, but the price was prohibitive. A few years later, Dr. Starr and Executive Director Roger Phillips agreed to a price of around $29,000. Both Dr. Starr and Mr. Phillips dreamed of the facility becoming a Youth Center right in the middle of what was then called “The Hole”.

What was even more amazing to watch at Madison House was not only how God worked, but how He worked through His people that made themselves available.

The Madison School became the Madison House Youth Center in the 1990’s under the leadership of Bob and Linda Harris. Today, if you talk to some young people that grew up in the MH neighborhood back then (now in their 30’s), they might say they are alive today because Madison House was their safe-haven. They would also say because of the Harris’, they know Jesus, and it has dramatically affected their lives and the lives of their children.

During the early 2000’s the ministry continued to have positive effects on the lives of many children in the MH neighborhood. However, during this time, most of the annual budget was utilized for the salary of the MH director, meals for the kids, and utility bills. There was little money left over for maintenance of the building and grounds. Most of the windows were broken, the floors were scratched and in need of repair, the walls needed paint, classrooms were in disarray, the roof leaked, the exterior of the building was dirty, the trim needed paint, and the basketball court was full of potholes. The need for restoration was immense and overwhelming. Where is help going to come from? Who will provide the resources? What is the plan? How will it take place?

So, in steps God! He puts on the heart of one man (a member of First Presbyterian church) to do something about the windows. The man “MAKES HIMSELF AVAILABLE” and responds to God’s nudging. The fact there are over 500 window panes that need to be replaced doesn’t overwhelm him. He shares God’s call with his FPC men’s small group. The men “MAKE THEMSELVES AVAILABLE” and respond to the call. Together they put up some money to start the project and start recruiting other men at

Madison House: Year of Service

From our seat, 8

Page 9: Here@First - April 2013

FPC. Over 70 FPC men “MAKE THEMSELVES AVAILABLE” to the call and together they replace over 500 window panes, paint and repair the frames and put a protective covering over the windows to protect them.

Then another calling from God! Before the windows were replaced, almost three quarters of the broken windows had been previously replaced with Plexiglas that had turned milk white and very little light got through to expose the terrible conditions of the hard wood floors and the walls inside the building. It was evident that something needed to be done. Two men heard the call to respond to the floors and one man to the walls. The three men from FPC “MADE THEMSELVES AVAILABLE” and shared the call with others from FPC and in a couple of months two teams of FPC men had the floors and walls restored.

But God’s wasn’t done! He influenced the hearts of two FPC families to adopt two of the classrooms, the chapel and the computer lab. They “MAKE THEMSELVES AVAILABLE” and the rooms are beautifully transformed.

Now God is on a roll! His people are responding and He’s got more to do. He calls on a man at FPC who had been in the tennis court installation business to redo the outside play courts and he “MAKES HIMSELF AVAILABLE”. God puts on the heart of a FPC man the need to raise money for the basketball and tennis courts and he “MAKES HIMSELF AVAILABLE” and raises $10,000, just the amount needed to finish the project!

The work continues, and God co-labors with the people of FPC (and others) to complete the restoration of His property so that it stands out like a beacon of light in what was once known as “The Hole”. The Madison House kids now refer to their building and grounds as “home”. They feel valued because people cared.

And now as result of the restoration, a new phase is developing at Madison House. Donations have significantly increased because of the progress that can be visibly seen in the newly restored building and grounds; the staff has tripled, there are more volunteers, and more kids are showing up to know Jesus. FPC members are putting their hammers, paint brushes and gloves away to “MAKE THEMSELVES AVAILABLE” for God’s next call at Madison House, a call that will transform the Madison House neighborhood, and our city, and in doing so, will transform our congregation.

Good News! God’s not done. Listen for His “call”. Join First Presbyterian Church at Madison House on April 21st to celebrate what has been done, and what God is now calling us to.

Baking For His Glory

Just as our bodies have many parts and each part has a special function, so it is with Christ's body. We are all parts of His one body, and each of us has different work to do. Since we are all one body in Christ, we belong to each other, and each of us needs all of the others. God has given each of us the ability to do certain things well. So, if God has given you the ability to prophesy, speak out when you have faith that God is speaking through you. If your gift is that of serving others, serve them well. If you are a teacher, do a good job of teaching. If your gift is to encourage others, do it! If you have money, share it generously. If God has given you leadership ability, take the responsibility seriously. And, if you have a gift for showing kindness to others, do it gladly. (Romans 12: 4-8)

It is the one and only Holy Spirit who distributes these gifts. He alone decides which gift each person should have. The human body has many parts, but the many parts make up only one body. So it is with the Body of Christ. (1 Corinthians 12:11-12)

It is Sunday morning and the Body of Christ is glorifying our Father by serving Him and one another. Pastor Jack is using his gift to preach, Jason is blessing us with his gift of music, Linda is expressing her gift of hospitality by greeting people with handshakes and hugs, and Janice Swett is leaving her cookies in the parlor kitchen to be served after the service.

While talking with Janice she shared that she loves to bake cookies and pies. She sees her baking as a way to share her love, and give to others. Janice proclaims the glory of God as simple ingredients become outrageously delicious cookies in her creative hands!

Just as each ingredient is important to a cookie recipe, each member of the Body of Christ is called to a unique plan and purpose for God. God has adopted us as His children, we are a family, and we experience the love of our Father through the people around us. Are you willing to let God use you and the special talents and gifts He has blessed you with to love and serve the Body of Christ, our church, His people, and our greater community?

Spend time in prayer, asking God how you can love and serve others.

And if baking is your gift . . .Janice’s Chocolate Chip CookiesMix together: 1 1/3 cup butter Crisco 1 cup white Splenda 1/2 cup brown Splenda 2 eggs 2 tsp vanillaAdd: 3 1/2 cups flour(a stiff dough will be made, mix with your hands) 1 tsp salt 1 tsp baking soda 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chipsRoll into a small ball, press down, cut out with a cookie cutter.Bake in oven at 375 F for 14 minutes.

burdened again by a yoke of slavery.” Galatians 5:1

BETH MOORE DVD CLASS!Breaking FreeWednesdays, April 3 through June 56:30p - 8:00p in the ParlorChildcare Available(with 48hr RSVP 248-7940 x117, for children 3mos – 5yrs old)Cost for workbook $18

In Breaking Free (this is an updated version!), Beth Moore looks at the Book of Isaiah through the lives of the kings who ruled during the prophet’s ministry. These kings exemplify many of the obstacles to freedom with which we must deal. Using Scripture to help identify spiritual strongholds in your life, no matter how big or small, Beth explains that anything that hinders us from the benefits of knowing God is bondage. God intends for you to know and believe Him, glorify Him, experience His peace, and enjoy His presence.

WOMEN’S RETREAT TESTIMONIES...On the next page you will see pictures (taken by the talented Kari DuBois) of our phenomenal women’s retreat. We spent a weekend at Campbell’s Resort on Lake Chelan learning our original design (who did God create us to be, how are we special to Him?), how to identify the strongholds that keep us from living into our original design and how it all looks in our daily lives.

Ladies were touched by the Holy Spirit at this retreat. Lives were radically changed by our King. We were all

challenged to love our God with reckless abandonment. There was powerful prayer time and women heard the voice of the Lord.

Intrigued? Want to hear more? Please look on our website, www.FPCYakima.com for testimonies from women who attended the retreat.

Most families will have times when they feel harassed by twisters, chased by flying monkeys, meet mean people threatening to snatch the family dog, or hassled by a wicked witch who tries to undermine their successes. Each parent dreams of “somewhere over the rainbow” where they can parent with intelligence, compassion and bravery, and raise children who are equipped with the same skills. Imagine how the story would have been different for Tin Man, Scarecrow and Lion if their parents raised them with the character traits of intelligence, compassion and bravery. This class will instill in you these three key parenting characteristics. Somewhere over the rainbow, there is no place like home, and the journey starts here.
