Editor’s Message

Hurrah...it’s officially spring and the sun is shining as I write this message! It’s amazing how much better a bit of sun and lighter mornings and evenings can

make you feel, and we at Here & Now Magazine are feeling much more positive about the rest of this year. We have lots of feedback from our advertisers and they would like me to pass on their thanks for the support you, our readers, are showing to them. Thank you for keeping it local and ensuring the survival of these hard working, local businesses. To other local businesses who need a boost – remember, NOT advertising is like winking in the dark – you know what you are doing but no one else does! Here & Now Magazine offers a brilliant, cost effective way to let local residents know what you do and how well you do it. It is effective because we keep the magazine local in its distribution, its content and of course we are locally based ourselves, working from Albion Mills in Greengates. This edition has some fabulous reading, plus hints, tips and advice on everything from your garden, your home, your health, to your wedding! There is also some great reading for all

car enthusiasts!

So we hope you enjoy this edition, as always, your feedback is most welcome.

The last time I reviewed Titanic Spa in Huddersfield, my experience was one of a visit on my own for some very much needed ‘me time’, and if you remember I enjoyed it so much that I took my Mum with me a few weeks later on the Mother and Daughter package. My Mum absolutely loved it and can’t wait for us to go again.

However, during both visits I noticed how many couples there were at the spa, all seeming to benefit from a very close, intimate experience where they were really enjoying each other’s company, each in their own world of calm and relaxation, just taking pleasure in spending some stress free time together. This got me thinking about the fact that although my husband Dave and I work and live together, our business is all consuming and we don’t actually see that much of each other - as I am usually out visiting customers while Dave runs the business from the office. Once home, work continues to be the topic of conversation as we catch up on the events of the day. It is very hard to escape to an environment of total relaxation for us. An overnight stay at Titanic Spa with two days of enjoying the facilities and some treatments might be just what we both needed to recharge our batteries and have some fun together. So I booked the couples overnight package and we couldn’t get there fast enough! We were really surprised at the luxury of the apartments; ours was a duplex with a large open plan lounge and kitchen, plus bathroom downstairs, and a fabulous loft style bedroom on the upper floor. We had a private balcony where we could sit with a glass or two of wine in the evening and enjoy our continental breakfast the next morning. But of course we were there to enjoy the facilities and treatments and quickly changed into the luxury robes and slippers we were provided with and headed down to the pool area before enjoying the Heat Experience. This is a series of rooms filled with either dry heat or hot steam or a freezing ice room where you rub crushed ice on your body. Outside these rooms there’s an ice plunge pool and an ice shower bucket, the idea

being that you experience extremes of hot and cold which cleanses the pores and also leaves you feeling exhilarated. I confess I wasn’t brave enough for the plunge pool or the ice bucket, but Dave and many others seemed to think it was amazing! You could tell when someone was experiencing either of these due to the short sharp screams they let out! Time for a bit of chill out time in the Quiet Zone before a scrumptious buffet lunch...mmmm, bliss! We both then made our way to the treatment rooms for a deep muscle body massage, after which we completely zonked out on the reclining chairs back in the Quiet Zone. This was absolute heaven.

The amazing thing was that we just enjoyed each other’s company without the need to chat and work was never mentioned once, ok until we were in the car on the way home, but it was one of the most enjoyable things we have done as a couple, and one we will be repeating on a regular basis. Dinner was superb and the bed was so comfy that we didn’t want to get up the next morning. The great thing is that Titanic Spa has so much to offer that you need regular visits to do everything, and it’s right on the doorstep.

I feel another visit coming on soon...see you there!

The Yorkshire Clinic opened their Premium Rooms on Tuesday 30th March 2010. The event was attended by members of the general public, insurance companies and a number of insurance brokers. For years I waged a personal war on fat. I was permanently engaged in being fat, losing it or putting it on again with remarkable ease. And not only was I fat, I was unhappy and dogged by poor health. Frustratingly, I ate a healthy diet, exercised regularly but always ended up the same – overweight and tired! Sound familiar?

Unhealthy

Poor health had become my normality. Constantly unwell with an endless stream of colds and flu, dental abscesses, diarrhoea, depression, debilitating fibromyalgia and painful joints, my immune system was fighting a battle which the hospital doctors were unable to locate. I felt worn out, run down.

A Chance Discovery

My journey into robust good health happened when a friend had a food sensitivity test with surprising results. It was her idea for me to have a test too. Although sceptical, I had nothing to lose.

The Test

I was really surprised when the test highlighted a number of foods as being problematic for me.

They were:

• Wheat • Maize • Barley • Oats • Rye • Dairy • Alcohol • Chocolate • Yeast • Mushrooms

I was devastated. Very few people have such complex food sensitivities. I threw myself into the elimination diet with enthusiasm determined to give it 100%.

Miraculous Results

Now it has to be said that not everyone gets such dramatic results. Within three days of removing the offending foods from my diet the excruciating pain I had experienced every day for years had gone. I could hardly believe it – no pain in my feet, knees, hips, shoulders, neck, back – I felt ten years younger.

Effortless Weight Loss

During the first month of my new diet the

diarrhoea stopped and I felt alive, well and bursting with energy. By the end of the month I had dropped 22lbs and have never looked back. I no longer suffer from depression. Some of the foods no longer cause me problems, others I will never be able to eat regularly.

Generally, I do not miss the foods that made me unwell. Occasionally I choose to eat my “bad foods”: I know I will suffer and I have a choice. It puts me in charge rather than being a victim.

On Saturday 24th April, four friends from the Social Club at The George pub in Idle, will venture out on a sponsored walk from Bowness (Windemere) to Idle. Yes, I really did say Bowness to Idle and NO it’s not just a pub crawl! The Club hopes to support a different charity each year and will hold events to raise money and awareness of the chosen charities. This year we are supporting the National Association for Colitis and Crohns disease, brought to our attention by a young, unassuming man called Ben Smith. This is his story and hopefully will highlight the symptoms, the emotional and physical traumas of the condition, how the illness changed his life and why, four regulars of a local pub, are embarking on a 100 mile trek to raise money for this charity. Ben Smith was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis in November 2007 at the age of 15. After the initial diagnosis he suffered drastic weight loss and was admitted to A&E where he was prescribed steroids and various other medications in an attempt to stabilize the condition and keep any additional problems at bay. He continued to suffer reoccurrences of symptoms common to his condition, which resulted in several other admissions to hospital. At this point, 15 year old Ben, a student at Immanuel College, was now taking 16 prescribed tablets a day and had to attend regular check-ups in addition to

enduring monthly blood tests. The ongoing medication helped Ben feel better but he knew that, ultimately, the tablets were damaging his health. Unfortunately, Ben was unable to cope physically without the steroids and other medications and had no other option than to consider surgery.

In June 2009, Ben had his first operation to remove his large bowel and create a pouch from his small bowel leaving him with a stoma. During the ‘recovery period’ (which was around six weeks), Ben was forced to go back into hospital three times due to reoccurring and painful problems with the stoma. This was an increasingly worrying and traumatic time for Ben and his family as the constant sickness and endurance of anxiety and pain seemed endless. In September 2009, Ben had the final part of his surgery to close the Illeostomy, and the stoma was removed. Thankfully, he no longer needs to take any medication and he has finally stopped planning his life around his illness. Needless to say, this has restored a great deal of normality back into his life. Ben is now 18 and, having experienced the worst Ulcerative Colitis, uncommon at such a young age, is trying to lead a full and active life, whilst endeavouring to raise awareness of this disabling disease.

Although Ben has received life changing support from the charity, he would like to ensure this continues for others who suffer with the same condition. It is because of this, we have chosen to support Ben in his quest to ‘give something back’ to the charity that worked tirelessly to ensure he received the best

possible medical care during his illness. The walk will take the four of us a week to complete. As a group of regular friends, with very little experience of walking, we aim to follow the Dalesway, stopping at Burneside, Sedburgh, Ribblehead, Cray, Appletreewick and Ilkley en route. The overwhelming support we have received in the form of sponsorships via the regulars in The George pub, the additional companies advertising on the page opposite and from a strong network of family and friends has been tremendous. All of this makes this walk possible.

We thank all for your support. Extended thanks go to Angela Riches, Here and Now editor, for donating this space and promoting our walk. We are hoping to raise a lot of cash for this worthy cause and would welcome any kind of sponsorship to make this ‘stroll’ worthwhile.

who said: “The quality and speed of Funky-Pix and the presentation was exceptional, so much that many of my colleagues and friends have seen the wall pieces and ordered from Funky-Pix as their work is totally confidential and the quality is outstanding.” Funky-Pix has continued to go from strength to strength and has been approached by numerous high profile football stars, who are developing properties, asking to be supplied with the new 3D acrylic mounts from a gallery of movie, sports and past icons as well as the adult range to adorn the walls of the new developments. From as little as £30 for a small canvas up to £270 for a 3D acrylic design, the prices are affordable and make a special gift for a loved one with each Wallpiece available gift wrapped and delivered within three days.

Now the beginning of British Summertime is here, people are starting to think of their holiday plans. With so many places to choose from and different factors to consider, you will definitely need a break just from all the work that’s needed to get it right for that well earned holiday.

Well where do we start?

Fancy a cruise? A record 1.65 million Brits will cruise this year and, with over 450 departures from the United Kingdom alone, the choice is endless. The cruising market is going full steam ahead with a different type of cruise for everyone. There’s adventure, culture, fun, relaxation or pure luxury to thousands of

destinations around the world. Your choice of ships and onboard facilities will blow you away, from the large superliners with their rock climbing walls, ice rinks, shopping malls, surf parks and mini golf to six star cruises that provide all an inclusive experience with fine wines and gourmet cuisine. What about all inclusive? More and more people now consider this option especially as the amount of Euros you get for your pound is dwindling. So with this choice at least you know your food and drink are taken care of. More and more all inclusive options are appearing around the Med, with large complexes having daytime activities, large swimming pools with waterslides and wave pools and night time entertainment to keep

the nippers entertained. Or travel further afield to Egypt, Mexico or the Caribbean where the options include luxury rooms with Jacuzzis, beach front locations, world class spa, and 24-hour all inclusive. Holiday in the UK. Last year was a boom time for the British Travel Industry with many holidaymakers forgoing their Mediterranean holidays due to claims that the UK was going to have one of the warmest summers in years but unfortunately the heat wave didn’t materialize. However, a new word was born calling these holidaymakers STAYCATIONERS. Once again the choice is endless from hotels to holiday parks, which over the years have spent millions upgrading their complexes with new swimming pools and slides and outdoor pursuits. There has been a large growth in the demand for luxury lodge accommodation that includes DVDs, LCD, TVs and outdoor hot tubs. Holiday companies that offer country cottages have also been extremely popular. That’s just a brief selection of what the world has to offer! I would you to spend more time researching the choice of holidays available to make sure yours fits your requirements and that the holiday company you book with is financially protected.

Children learned about the art of making healthy packed lunches when a local supermarket’s team visited their school.

Youngsters at Greengates Primary School learned what sort of food complement each other to make up a tasty, nutritious lunch box, and were able to do a taste test on everything afterwards! Helen Broadhurst of Sainsbury’s Try Team, a national initiative set up to pass on culinary skills and inspire people to cook, helped the children to prepare the food. The Sainsbury’s Try Team is made up of 12 community food and health advisors who work with schools and community groups in their local area.Linda Guy, of Sainsbury’s Otley, previously worked at the Greengates store and is still a school community governor at Greengates Primary. She said: “I think it’s fantastic to have the team visit the school. As someone who leads a very busy working life, I am always in need of ideas for packed lunches!”

Anti-social behaviour (ASB) is any intimidating or threatening activity that scares you or damages your quality of life.

Examples that the police deal with include: - rowdy, noisy/yobbish behaviour, vandalism/graffiti and street drinking. As the lighter nights and warmer weather will soon be upon us, the police see an increase of younger people on the streets. The vast majority do not cause ASB, albeit they can be loud. However, there is always a small number that do cause issues for the local community.

Alcohol frequently features in these instances. The police will visit both off-licenses and pubs to ensure they are complying with the law and fully know their legal obligations. Where this does not work we will deal robustly with the premises. This was the case last year where, together with local residents and ward councillors, I presented evidence to Bradford Council which then closed an off-license in Idle which frequently sold alcohol to young people.

If you need more information please visit the West Yorkshire Polices website. Inspector Peter Tuff, West Yorkshire Police.

• We support all victims and witnesses until the case is closed and afterwards if appropriate

Launched in 2009 Lets Go Professional Ltd goes from strength to strength in the professional letting market.

The range of services and personal approach provided by owner Jon Huby and his team has ensured that landlords have secured tenants quickly and efficiently for their properties throughout Leeds and Bradford.

Covering Leeds and Bradford, Lets Go Professional has quickly built up a portfolio of quality, managed properties for individual landlords and property investors. As the company name suggests, they specialise in providing professional tenants and a professional service. The company has also developed some high profile partnerships with local companies.

As Jon explains: “Working closely with a number of large local companies who have urgent property requirements for employees has been really exciting. The companies like the fact we are professionally qualified via the Guild of Letting and Management and accredited with the National Approved Letting Scheme (NALS). This signifies that we comply with defined service standards and have in place Professional Indemnity Insurance, Client Money Protection cover and access to Tenancy Deposit Protection. “Finding a new home is very personal so we consult directly with the employees to determine exactly the kind of accommodation they require, as well as the lifestyle choices and any school requirements they may have. This helps us find the most suitable area and accommodation for clients. It’s incredibly rewarding for us to feel we have helped someone find a new home in the right area. Landlords also really appreciate the care and diligence we take to find suitable professional tenants for their properties.

Our charges also offer great value and are transparent with no hidden extras.” Offering alternative solutions is one distinct aspect of the services Lets Go Professional provides that separates them from the competition. The photos illustrated here demonstrate the quality of some of the properties. For example, the company manages a refurbished converted farm house that offers flexible, luxury accommodation to individuals who may only work in the area during the week but don’t want the often sterile and claustrophobic setting of hotels. Here they can relax at the end of the day in a beautiful, rural setting within easy reach of Leeds or Bradford and with all the comforts of home, at a fraction of the cost! So if you have a property you are thinking of letting and require qualified, professional service, Jon and his team look forward to hearing from you.

Bradford is well known for having lots of Indian restaurants and now it is famous for having the only Indian restaurant from the city to be listed in this years renowned Michelin Guide. However, Zaara’s on Bradford Road in Saltaire, who opened their doors in August 2007, has actually achieved much more than that as they are the only Indian restaurant from the whole of Yorkshire to be listed in the 2010 guide!

It takes just one visit to see how they achieved such an accolade. The contemporary décor, soft lighting and comfy brown leather chairs plus an extensive menu for meat eaters and vegetarians

alike, plus the very best of service ensures that your first visit will certainly not be your last! Owner, Harry Khinda is thrilled by the restaurant’s achievement and told us, “Whether this is your first time or you’re a regular customer, we’re sure you’ll enjoy our great food, drink and service. Our ethos is to prepare and cook authentic Punjabi dishes using only the finest natural ingredients available. Everything we cook is fresh and there is not too much oil or ghee. I wanted it to be created as if at home. We buy our spices whole and grind them ourselves so it’s more aromatic and don’t buy tinned products. We boil our own chickpeas and make our own

paneer (Indian cheese). You have got to put the time and effort in and be at the restaurant throughout the day. Our most popular dishes are chicken balti and chicken karahi.”

we cook our food at the restaurant in the the same we many Indians cook at home. Good quality fresh ingridents, we roast and grind spices and masalas ourselves which adds to the depth of the flavour. We also use less oil, ghee and food colouring than other Asian restaurants said Harry Khinda. One of our main principles is to prepare our food ourselves rather than buying it in tins or packets. We purchase fresh vegetables from the market, we hand make our own samosa’s and spring rolls, as well as making our own paneer (Inidan Cheese). The difference is in the taste and that’s why people like our food they trust us to provide them with a great dining experience. We believe being different will make us stand out from the crowd. Come and try our hand made cherry and mascarpone samosa’s with vanilla ice cream and you too will agree with us.

The Baildon in Bloom Committee had only just recovered from their very successful ‘Wacky Scarecrow Walk’ before they started with a new incentive, their ‘Golden Daffodils for Spring’ promotion. This idea caught the imagination of the Baildon public and it appeared to set the scene for the ‘Yorkshire in Bloom’ competition for 2010. Having won two Silver Gilt Awards, the committee are pulling out all the stops for a Gold Award this year, and Bradford Council have confi rmed that they will support as much as possible to help Baildon achieve this target.

The Yorkshire in Bloom judges will arrive in Baildon in early April for their spring judging and the Baildon in Bloom committee are confi dent that with the continued support and cooperation of the villagers, Baildon will again raise the bar with their beautiful display of blooms. Baildon has an enviable reputation for being a very clean and well cared for village and the committee would like to offer their personal thanks to Baildoners and visitors to this popular village for their efforts in keeping such high standards. There has been a generous reaction from members of the public, who have donated many bags of bulbs to boost the committee’s contribution. The number of bulbs planted for spring is almost three thousand, and as Wordsworth once said, Baildon will have a ‘host of daffodils’ around the village. This has all meant a lot of hard work for the committee and volunteer planters on

the working parties. There has been a great deal of help from The Probation Service and their Payback Team. The team consists of seven teenagers with a supervisor, who all brought their own tools and even their lunch with them! Committee member Ron Bairstow told us, “We were very impressed with the way the payback team tackled the job in hand, they worked very hard and it was obvious that they realised that they were ‘paying back’ to the community for their misdeeds. Their efforts were greatly appreciated by the committee and we would highly recommend this wonderful service provided by The Probation Service.” There were two areas planned, the area around The Cricketers Arms and Baildon

Green hamlet, and the second by the cattle grid, close to the tilted trolley. The team worked very hard and planted 700 bulbs in a few hours. Each school in Baildon also received a bag of daffodil bulbs, to be planted by the school garden clubs. This idea came after Sandal School won second prize at the recent Scarecrow Walk, with scarecrows from their own garden club. The Baildon in Bloom committee are hopeful that the Yorkshire in Bloom judges will be suitably impressed by their efforts to include all of the schools and general public in their target of a Gold Award in 2010.

A little about me

Before working as a freelance photographer I worked as a gym instructor for Leeds City Council for five years. I also worked with young people who had weight management problems to help get them involved in physical activity. I have always been interested in sports and spent 20 years of my life skateboarding, which finally led to sponsorship from Adidas, I also still have a huge passion for photographing skateboarding and action.

So why photography?

Since picking up a camera in 2003 I found a new passion. Photography has made me look at the world through different eyes. I can now use my creative energy to produce stunning pictures. So, with the passion for my hobby I decided that I could make photography my livelihood.

Dirty worn out grouting and silicone seals between your shower, bathroom and kitchen tiles can make a whole room look tired and decrepit, you may even think you need to completely refurbish. Grout and silicone deterioration is like gum disease for your interior tiles, when your gums deteriorate your teeth break down, fall out and in some cases can cost a fortune to rectify.

Tile grout is a porous material that deteriorates with increased exposure and absorption of water, cleaning products, age and wear and tear. When grouting wears down, it will eventually lead to damp getting behind the tiles and causing leaks to floors, adjoining walls, carpet etc; all in all a very expensive exercise. Not to mention that when mould and moisture gathers, so does bacteria, and your bathroom and kitchen are the two last places in your home where you want germs. After all these are the rooms where you clean yourself and prepare your meals! An affordable alternative to refurbishing or re-tiling your bathroom or kitchen is to simply re-grout the tiles. You will be amazed at how much of a difference this will make to your tiles surfaces, in fact the whole room.Michael Joule has been running Grout Wizard, also known as Professional Re-Grout Service, for over eight years. Previous to this Michael worked in Sydney, Australia for a company specialising in this exact same service, and after making enquiries if there was such a service available in England, he found that there was virtually no one and saw a superb opportunity to come back to the UK and set up Professional Re-Grout Services. This he did in late 2001, immediately he started advertising and

was astonished at the response. Michael told us, “We hit the ground running. As soon as we started advertising we had calls coming in a few days later, with people telling us that they had been searching for someone offering this kind of service. Some customers had tried to re-grout the tiles themselves, or found odd job men to try and do it, and these were often a disaster. There were

scratched tiles, grout stuck to the surface of the tiles and generally a shoddy job that left the customer very unhappy.” That was over eight years ago, and although based in West Yorkshire, they found their unique service in demand all over Yorkshire and Lancashire, doing lots of work in Manchester and Liverpool too. Michael is still amazed at the results his re-grouting methods can produce on interior tiles, “We work on tiles from 6 months to over a hundred years old and every job we do has the same thing in common, 99% of the time the tiles are fine, they just need re-grouting, polishing, and silicone seals replacing, the end product looks as if you have had a complete re-tile. Of course our service costs a fraction of the cost of having that done!

People are always amazed when they see the finished results. It’s always a real shock when they walk in to inspect the work and see the difference. We have many testimonials from customers who have recommended us to family and friends.” Michael and his specialised team of technicians at Grout Wizard can re-grout most areas and type of tile, providing the tiles are not too badly damaged. They use a very high quality precision machine tool with a diamond tipped oscillating blade and remove 3mm to 4mm of old grout without damaging tiles or filling the house with dust. Even better, Grout Wizard’s unique service costs much less than re-tiling a shower, bathroom or kitchen. A shower cubicle or combined bath and

AFTER the long, cold winter is your lawn looking as green and healthy as it should with summer approaching?

Most of us simply expect our lawns to look good throughout the spring and summer but the truth is grass needs help to be lush, green and weed-free. GreenThumb is a thriving company in Wharfedale that can look after your lawn -- for LESS than you could do the do the job yourself. You did read that correctly. GreenThumb can send their highly-trained staff to feed and weed your lawn for less than it would cost to buy the materials

yourself at a DIY store. The Wharfedale branch of GreenThumb – part of the UK’s biggest lawn treatment service -- is based in Ilkley, and treats hundreds of lawns in an area stretching from Horsforth to Shipley, Guiseley, Skipton and beyond. Each lawn the company looks after receives four pre-scheduled treatments throughout the growing season – starting in March and ending in the early autumn – designed to make the grass look stunning. The experts

can also tackle a range of pests and conditions that damage grass, including leatherjackets, which destroy roots, chafer grubs, red thread, drought and moss. And with treatments starting at just £14 for a small lawn, it really is cheaper than you could do it yourself buying fertiliser and weed killer or other products from a DIY store. And the results speak for themselves! Have a look at the before and

Transform Your Lawn

Top Tips to get your Lawn off to a Flying Start

1. Clean up, rake away those dead leaves, twigs and branches. The less debris on the lawn, the more sunlight it will get and the healthier it’ll be.

2. Lawns don’t like shade - take a good look at those border plants, shrubs and trees – they all have a habit of encroaching on the lawn’s space and weakening it by denying it light. Then … get the secateurs out!

3. Check your mower is up to the job - it’s not too late to get it serviced. Make sure the blade is sharp and keep it that way by buying a spare and swapping it over as the season progresses. Remember to raise the height of your first cut to just ‘top’ the grass – cutting it too low will put the grass into stress and set it back - just when you want to encourage it.

4. Look out for sickly-looking patches. There is a lot of damage following the recent prolonged snow and some patches may be Snow Mould (caused by the same pathogen that results in Fusarium) and this may require the application of a Fungicide. If in doubt call the professionals in.

5. The ground will start to warm now so it’s a good time to prepare to repair those bare patches that always appear over winter. Carefully rake the patch to create a bed, sow the seeds with a little top-soil and don’t let them dry out. They’ll germinate in a few days. Don’t mow or feed them until a few weeks have passed and they’re well established.

6. Check out the weeds. If hand-picking isn’t your thing and you don’t fancy buying, storing and handling chemicals, get the professionals in.

after pictures. The grass on the lawn in these pictures suddenly began disappearing, but the GreenThumb team restored it to its former glory within weeks after treating the lawn for a leatherjacket infestation. GreenThumb in Wharfedale was

launched in 2008 by husband and wife team Chris and Joanne Ducker. Said Chris: “We’d been customers of GreenThumb before so we knew the high standards that are expected. But it’s worth the hard work to see the reaction from our customers

when they see their lawns transformed!”

With the warmer weather hopefully on its way, now is the ideal time to get outside in your garden and create a perfect habitat for the huge array of wildlife which live right outside your door step.

Children are fascinated by wildlife whether they are wriggly worms, creepy spiders, loveable ladybirds, buzzy bees, mice or frogs! And they will love helping mum and dad to build this amazing-looking wildlife stack, which provides much needed shelter and nesting places throughout the important months ahead. Carolyn Budding, director at Little Terra, the UK’s leading kids outdoor gear company, said: “A wildlife stack is like a block of flats for our garden friends – providing a range of different animals and bugs with essential shelter and nesting sites. By providing a number of habitats all in one structure your children will be helping lots of species survive and may even encourage new and unusual visitors to your garden!” Little Terra has teamed up with the Derbyshire Wildlife Trust to bring you your very own Guide to Building your Own Wildlife Stack:-

1. Take a walk around your garden to see where best to site your stack. Stay away from damp areas as well as parts of the garden that

may get too hot in summer. The site should be level and remember when it’s finished it may be several feet high so choose somewhere where it won’t get in the way.2. Firstly lay out a layer of bricks on the ground – broken ones are perfect for this job and provide little crevices for frogs and toads and other amphibians. Then place a wooden pallet on top.

3. Stuff the pallet with straw, wooden shavings or dry grass, which will make cosy nesting sites for many creatures and attract queen bumble bees.

4. Add some bricks around the edges – air bricks with holes in are best for this as they will ensure a good flow of air through the structure and the holes also look good stuffed with pine cones – the perfect habitat for spiders, small insects and other invertebrates as they hide in the gaps between the cone scales.

5. Make sure the structure is stable, then place another pallet on top and then create a different layer. A more open environment would be good here – try using clay plant pots around the outside and fill in the middle with old roof tiles or broken garden pots – a great little den for hibernating reptiles and lizards.

Look after your Garden Wildlife this SpringBuild a block of flats for your favourite garden creatures

6. Add a third pallet and create a contrast in material with some twigs and branches bunched together which will be perfect for larger insects, including every child’s favourite garden visitor – butterflies.

7. You could add a fourth pallet and make a different layer. Pebbles, rocks and stone will look great and will create a similar habitat to a drystone wall, providing a cool and shady spot for reptiles and nocturnal animals on hot days. Logs with holes drilled in to the end will provide nesting places for many insects including solitary bees. Bits of bamboo lengths will give ladybirds a home over winter and rolled up pieces of corrugated cardboard are ideal for attracting lacewings into your garden, as their larvae feed on aphids and other pests.

8. Once you have finished layering, make a roof to keep the stack dry with a piece of roof felt or heavy duty UV stabilised polythene tacked on.

9. Complete the look with attractive pieces on the top such as logs, cones, rocks or make it look like a proper little house with ornate chimney stacks and roof tiles – the children will be bound to come up with lots of ideas to help!

Your hard work will be rewarded with an attractive garden structure that will look good and which will keep the kids occupied for hours, checking out your latest garden guests.

For inspiration see the Derbyshire Wildlife Trust’s Wildlife Stack at its Conservation Centre at The Avenue Washlands, Wingerworth, Chesterfield or visit www.littleterra.co.uk or www.derbyshirewildlifetrust.org.uk.

It is widely thought that anyone can daub on some mortar to point over cracks and problems, but 99% of the time this is all that will be achieved and, more often than not, far from remedying a problem this action will actually compound it.

A sticking plaster solution to a problem that requires specialist attention and one that will go on to require (expensive) major surgery at a later date –a crack pointed over is still a crack! The structure will be more vulnerable than if nothing had been done – buildings need to breathe and the mortar is effectively the building’s lungs. You wouldn’t ask a roofer to rewire your house, or a plumber to install your double glazing, or get a decorator to install your new bathroom, so why would you trust anyone other than a specialist with the very fabric of your building? You should be calling in Millholme

Restorations your local re-pointing specialist.

Weddings

Claire Young, Director of Elegant Venues and a fi nalist from the BBC Apprentice series in 2008, asks if the perfect wedding venue exists and how to fi nd it.

Before I set up Elegant Venues in 2008 I was already interested in weddings – like most women out there I secretly dream of meeting Prince Charming, receiving the big diamond and planning my wonderful day. For many people it is the most momentous day of their lives and it is important that every little detail is right. One of the things at the top of the list will be to fi nd your perfect venue. Apart

from a car or mortgage, it is probably the largest amount of money you will spend on a single purchase so it’s important to think hard, do your research and ask lots of questions. I work in the wedding industry day in day out so feel I have plenty of experience to share. Trust me I have seen the good, the bad and the ugly! Everyone is individual; therefore, every couple’s idea of the perfect venue will be different. Nowadays there are so many venue options, with something to suit everyone. Literally any building can be a wedding venue and the range available is mind blowing, from traditional to the weird and wonderful. Whether it’s a beautiful castle, a marquee, or even something unusual like skydiving, the bride and groom will have an idea about what they are looking for. Weddings are no longer restricted to hotels where there are rules about what can /

can’t be done. The individuality and fl exibility of a private residence could be the solution – this is what we do at Elegant Venues. The properties are beautifully cared for; the venue is exclusive to the wedding party so it’s yours for the day. Despite the recession, the wedding industry is thriving and research has shown that the average cost of a UK wedding has actually increased over the last few years to over £22,000. Couples want this day to be spectacular and the venue is an integral part of this, as this research has shown, weddings are the bright spot in the doom and gloom of the economy. We’re heading into a relationship boom, romance is making people happy – love makes the world go round! You can fi nd out more about Claire and Elegant Venues at www.elegantvenues.co.uk

The Wedding Apprentice

Some basic questions need to be asked so you don’t waste your time trawling round venues which aren’t right for you, for example:

Can they accommodate the • number of guests you wish to have? You don’t want to be squashed in like sardines!

Does the venue allow children? •

Do you need access for elderly • guests?

Is there accommodation for • your guests? If not, where will they stay?

Are there any restrictions with • the venue? For example do they allow fi reworks? Do they allow confetti? Do they allow candles?

Ask the ‘deal breaker’ questions to the venue before you make an appointment, your time is precious and you don’t want to waste it looking at unsuitable venues.

The wedding season is about to explode with Easter and the start of spring, and one of the most important components to creating the perfect wedding day is knowing that you will have your perfect cake.

Cakecraft, based at Unit 6, Enterprise 5 shopping complex in Idle, Bradford, has been run by Carole Rayner for 21 years and during this time Carole has seen many changes in cake styles and fashions - and it is being able to keep up with what is popular that ensures Cakecraft has loyal customers who come back time and time again for wedding and celebration cakes. Sponge cakes are currently at the height of their popularity, with many different flavours including tangy lemon sponge or strawberry and white chocolate to name just a couple, and you can be as adventurous as you like with a three tier cake made in three

different flavours! However, remember that even sponge cakes need to be booked several months in advance, to allow for decoration time - Carole is a perfectionist and wants to be sure that your cake creates the ‘wow factor’! To help create that fabulous first impression when your guests see your cake, Cakecraft provides free use of the correct style of cake stand to really enhance the presentation. Every detail has been thought out for you so that all you need to do is enjoy your day. Carole’s dependable, reliable and professional service is evident in the many thank you cards and testimonials displayed in her shop and the fact that you can see her hard at work creating each dream cake whenever you pay her a visit, shows just how popular her services are. Plus the smell of cakes baking just makes your mouth water!

To celebrate Cakecraft’s 21 years at Enterprise 5, Carole is giving something back to each customer who orders their wedding cake for 2010 with her by way of a £20 High Street Voucher. Make sure you pay Carole a visit soon to avoid disappointment.

It makes sense...“100% of customers responding to our survey said they would definitely recommend Synergy Automotive”

1. Fuel Price - Check out petrolprices.com, it uses postcodes to find the cheapest fuel near you.

2. Tyre Pressure - Check pressure weekly as under inflated tyres can increase fuel consumption by 5%.

3. Plan Your Journey - Use the AA route planner or equivalent to map your journey. Don’t get lost, use extra fuel or turn up late.

4. Leave The Car - Once per week try to leave the car and use public transport or car share or walk.

5. Air Conditioning - Turn it off in cooler weather, this could save you up to 10% on fuel.

6. Changing your car - Look at the CO2 emissions/fuel consumption of your car. Most manufacturers now offer low CO2, highly fuel efficient versions of their models. These vehicles look the same as their normal variant but can offer fuel savings of up to 50% and Free Road Tax.

Here are Paul’s tips for saving your motoring money!

Evans Business Centre, Hartwith Way, Harrogate, North Yorkshire HG3 2XATel: 01423 813 510 Web: www.synergyautomotive.co.uk

7. Lease Don’t Buy! - Leasing offers many benefits including low deposit, it can be tax efficient for businesses and you only pay for the vehicle whilst you use it. Benefit from nationally negotiated fleet purchase terms. Contract hire and leasing from Synergy can offer fixed cost motoring.8. It’s my car, should I lease? - In recent times personal lease products have become more popular. They are offered in two formats: Personal Contract Hire – drive the car, pay the payments, hand it back. Personal Contract Purchase - offers the same fixed price motoring but includes the option to purchase the car at the end if you want. Costs are broadly similar.

9. Older cars cost more! - They require MOTs, services, cam belts, brake changes, tyres and other repairs. These costs as well as lower fuel efficiency and higher CO2 emissions can add up to more than the cost of leasing a new modern economical vehicle. Lease and Contract hire vehicles are offered with road tax for the term, Manufacturer’s warranty, and most new cars are supplied with roadside assistance, some offer three years. Next time you pay for a service and MOT with some repairs, just think that could be the equivalent of two to three months leasing cost on a new vehicle. Next time you fill the tank, you could be getting 150 miles per tank more with a newer, more efficient engine.

10. Keep your money - Contract Hire and Leasing is based on paying for the use of the car whilst you drive it and deposits can be as low as one monthly rental in advance.

Reducing and fixing motoring costs in these difficult times really can make a difference. Take a look at our top ten tips and see how SYNERGY helps its clients, business and personnel save money!

Synergy offers business users and individuals a quality service supplying all makes and models of new cars and vans financed in the right way for them. Managing Director Paul Parkinson and his dedicated team are focused on providing the highest levels of service with a keen eye on price. Paul says: “Today more than ever our clients are looking closely at their budgets, value and more car for their money. Taking the time to listen and understand their needs and requirements, we can suggest the right vehicle and the right finance option.”

Ok, so who has missed seeing our Here & Now SMART cars zooming around the area? Yes it was time to say ‘goodbye’ as they came to the end of their lease agreement and as they have been such an effective way of building the Here & Now brand locally over the last three years, we knew we had to get another one as soon as possible.

Having heard about the superb service provided by Paul and his team at Synergy, we tasked them with finding a new SMART car for us, one that would look fantastic with our new logos all over it, update our corporate image, an upgrade from the previous model and save us money! We heard Paul likes a challenge so we put him to the test...and guess what? Look at our gorgeous top of the range SMART car in Crystal White and Silver, with built in Satellite Navigation and Blue

Tooth, Air Conditioning and Eco engine that cuts out when you stop for any length of time which is not only good for the environment – it saves us money on petrol! And it also came in under budget. The man’s a genius! Now you’re thinking what could top that, well wait for it...as the car was sourced from Mercedes in Leicester, I was provided with a private driver who took me to collect the car and walked me through the process of collection before leaving me to drive my beautiful new SMART car home, and at no extra cost to me or our company. Convinced yet? Don’t take our word for it...call Synergy yourself and see

what they can do for you. In the meantime, look out for us once we get our new logo’s on, that’s the next step, and we’ll be shouting about that too!

We love our new SMART car from Synergy!

Yorkshire’s only supercar club, ècurie25 has widened the scope of its appeal by opening up its calendar of club events to non-members.

The club, which is aimed at those who want to experience the thrill and excitement of driving the ultimate supercars, but not have to worry about the high cost and hassle of ownership, boasts a packed events calendar of unforgettable driving experiences, which this year include VIP Grand Prix trips, road rallies in Europe and the UK and a series of track days. Club director, Paul Brown commented: “The events calendar has been a feature of ècurie25 since the club launched in London four years ago and every year it has got bigger and better. For 2010 we looked at the various events and thought that they provided ideal opportunities for non-members to get a taste for the club by getting behind the wheel of an array of our cars and mixing with some of our existing members” Amongst the highlights this year are two road rallies – the first, a two night couple’s outing in June that takes in the best roads in Yorkshire, the Lakes and Scotland, includes five star accommodation and Michelin star food, a whisky tasting tour and spa sessions. Meanwhile, in September the world famous Nurburgring in Germany is the focal point of a trip that will see attendees drive through

England, France, Belgium and Germany in a fleet of different supercars, before tackling the ring and returning home the way they came. In addition, there are VIP trips to the Monaco, British and Abu Dhabi Grands Prix, a driving trip from Barcelona to the Ascari race track in the south of Spain, a visit to the Paris Motorshow and a series of track days, where the usual driver to car ration is two to one. “For anyone who loves cars attending any one of these events would be an absolute thrill, so we feel that by extending the opportunity to attend beyond our membership we are giving more people the chance to fulfil their driving dreams in the company of a number of like-minded individuals,” added Paul. Prices range from £1,500 for track days to £8,500 for the Ascari trip in Spain. To find out more visit www.ecurie25.co.uk/events-e25.aspx

Full membership of ècurie25, which operates out of Wakefield, starts at £11,000 per annum. In return members receive a number of credits, which can then be ‘spent’ on driving the cars. This typical standard membership equates to an average of 50 driving days every year, while the ultimate option (£16,000) allows for a maximum of 122 days. Amongst the vehicles currently available to members to book out of Yorkshire are an Aston Martin DBS, Lamborghini Gallardo LP560-4, Maserati Granturismo S, Bentley Continental GT, Jaguar XKR 5.0, Audi R8 and a Ferrari California – one of only a handful in the country. On top of that the club expects to add a Ferrari F458 Italia, McClaren MP4-12C and a Ferrari 599 to the fleet during the next 12months. Members can also book any car from the club’s London and Belfast branches – full details of these models can be found on the website.

The months of March and April are the busiest time of year for the Leeds On The Road team.

Events have taken place in Ilkley, Southampton, Lincoln, Sacrborough, and Dublin in recent weeks and there is the promise of more to come. Chairman Ken Bates was among the guests for an informal night of Q&A in Ireland the club’s management and first team players are regular panellists for events held in the UK. There are further events scheduled for Coventry, Nottingham, Kent, and Crewe before a June trip to Malta to meet the Real Leeds Malta Members Club. The club has over 50 Regional Members Club branches, and visits are made to many during the course of year.

For more information on becoming a Leeds United Member see leedsunited.com

Leeds are United in Remembrance Leeds United manager Simon Grayson, stars from the club’s past, cricketers, rockers, and fans, all donned their boots last month in support of Leeds Fans Remembrance.

A fantastic crowd in the region of 1500 turned out at Garforth Town for the charity match between a Simon Grayson XI and a Leeds Fans Remembrance XI, and an enjoyable day was had by all. Simon Grayson’s XI was managed by Kaiser Chiefs bassist Simon Rix, and the two Simons oversaw a 5-2 victory from what was a competitive game. Bobby Davison turned the clock back, scoring the opening goal, before the club’s Under-18 manager and veteran of over 1000 league appearances, Neil Redfearn scored twice. Yorkshire cricket star Anthony McGrath also scored twice in the second half and impressed with his touches. Grayson’s XI also included Glynn Snodin, Brendan Ormsby, Tommy Wright, Andy Ritchie, United physio Harvey Sharman, Kasier Chiefs Nick Hodgson and Whitey, Yorkshire CCC coach Martyn Moxon, Bryn Law from Sky Sports, and Terry Fisher, from the club’s principle shirt sponsor netflights.com. United manager Simon Grayson said: “It was a great day. The weather was superb

and to see so many people there was terrific. It was a good game, all the lads enjoyed themselves and it was good to get out and play. The main thing was that it raised money for a fantastic cause. “I’d like to say a big thanks to everyone who played in the game and organised the event, and also to everyone who came down on the day.” Simon Rix, in manager-mode, said: “We passed it around and tired them out. I was disappointed we didn’t keep a clean sheet, but a 100 per cent start to my managerial career looks good on my CV. I made an inspiration substitution at half-time with Neil Redfearn who I thought ran the second half.” Simon added in more-serious mode: “The sun helped, it was a really good day. Hopefully it made plenty of money for charity in memory of the two lads, and I hope we can do it again!” The club also marked the 10th anniversary of the murders of the two Leeds fans by holding a minute’s silence ahead of the game against Swindon Town on Easter Saturday. Captain Richard Naylor and midfielder Jonny Howson also laid wreaths as a mark of respect.Under-18s coach Neil Redfearn hailed the club’s trip to Dubai as an “outstanding experience.”

Hitting the Road

Page 55: Here & Now Magazine

In the last edition of Here and Now I spoke of the uncertainty surrounding the then manager Stuart McCall. Well as we now know, Stuart did the honourable thing and walked away. I do believe talks had taken place prior to his resignation but how refreshing in the modern day game when a manager doesn’t hold out for a big pay off.

It didn’t work out for Stuart and if any one person deserved success on the strength of being City through and through it was Stuart.I was actually quite relieved when his departure happened because it was difficult to criticise a man who would bleed Claret and Amber if he cut himself but I think we all knew it was the end for Stu and the dawn of a new era. The big names suggested as his successor were impressive but to actually discover the man to take over the reins was none other than Peter Taylor spoke volumes for the ambitions of our club. Already we have witnessed the release of many top wage earners and more new faces than a normal pre-season. The ex-caretaker manager of England seems to be going about his job in a very efficient way, his wage demands for next season don’t seem to be a stumbling block but he seems to want new training facilities and who can blame him.

The bog that is Rawdon Meadows is no different to the pitch at Valley Parade which as taking a real hammering this winter. The inadequate drainage at Valley Parade has seen most games throughout the winter played on a surface little better than a paddy field. Hopefully this will be rectified during the summer. Talking of the Valley Parade ground, it must be soul destroying for the groundsman when a game is called off with hours to go to the kick off like the Notts County game which was scheduled for the 16th January. Melting snow mixed with heavy rain saw gallons of water turn the pitch into a lake as the drains were unable to cope with the water. Mick Doyle, the head grounds man, had worked around the clock all that week trying to get the game on, his and the efforts of his workforce were commendable but sadly in vain. Away from footballing matters at VP we are rapidly approaching the 25th anniversary of the Bradford City fire, a 25 year fund raising committee is trying to raise £100,000 on behalf of the world renowned Bradford Burns Unit which carries out research into the treatment of burns and other forms of reconstruction due to trauma, cancer and birth defects. Already the fund is over £40,000 with lots of other fund raising going on. A very useful medium for paying in a donation is the Just Giving website which hosts all

the events individuals are partaking in. That website is http://www.justgiving.com/bcfcburnsunitappeal/The Shipley Bantams fund raiser will be a walk by myself and Joe Szalkiewicz on the 18th of April when we set out to walk the Yorkshire Three Peaks. Of course any donations will be very gratefully received and our link to that is http://www.justgiving.com/theshippers It is hoped many more of our members will join in the walk at various stages and make the day a really enjoyable and profitable one - even though I have a feeling it will be an exhausting one. So with the end of the season approaching we can turn our attentions to South Africa and the World Cup. I’m old enough to remember the time England actually won it and the feeling of immense pride it brought to our nation, what a fantastic achievement it would be if we could win it again. However, as a City fan I have to say I’d rather City win promotion next season than England return with the World Cup, I do, of course, wish for both but that would be greedy. It would have been a fitting tribute to the 56 fans who lost their lives in the fire to have gained promotion on the 25th anniversary but I’m sure they will be there in spirit when Peter Taylor leads us out of the basement league next season.

Smithy is BackThe Rhinos were delighted to welcome back England international Lee Smith, who returned home to sign for Leeds on a four year contract including the 2010 season, after a spell with rugby union outfit London Wasps.

Before switching codes to join Wasps, Smith left on a high scoring a try in last year’s Grand Final win at Old Trafford and he took no time in settling back into life at Headingley Carnegie by scoring two tries against Bradford in his first game back in the Blue and Amber. Commenting on signing for the Rhinos Smith said, “It is a dream come true to get another opportunity to play for the Rhinos and pull on a blue and amber shirt again. I genuinely believed that my last game for the Rhinos would be last year’s Grand Final at Old Trafford and that was an emotional occasion for me. “Unfortunately things did not work out for me at Wasps but I am grateful to them for allowing me to return home and move on to the next stage of my career. I always said that if I did return to Rugby League that Leeds was the only club I was interested in playing for and I am grateful to Paul Caddick,

Gary Hetherington and Brian McClennan for allowing me another opportunity to play for my club,” added Smith. Head Coach Brian McClennan commented, “We are delighted to welcome Lee back into our family. At the end of last season, he went with our best wishes to try a new challenge in his life. At just 23 years of age, he has his whole career hopefully in front of him. We are delighted to have him back at Leeds especially on a long term contract.”

A team of cyclists took on their biggest challenge of their lives when they cycled nearly 1,000 miles in just nine days to help raise £5000 each for Sport Relief and the Leeds Rugby Foundation.

Sport Relief has seen many epic challenges in recent years including Eddie Izzard’s incredible run around the UK and the team of four local fundraisers helped make their own piece of history when they completed the challenge ahead of the Rhinos game against Catalans Dragons in Perpignan. They began their journey at Headingley Carnegie Stadium at 9am and completed the feat on Easter Monday.

The quartet was led by Leeds Rugby’s Head of Finance Nigel Chambers along with colleague Andrew Webster, Simon Evans from the Rugby Football League based in Leeds and local school administrator Jamie Kilner.

Commenting on the challenge Rhinos captain Kevin Sinfield said, “I think this is an incredible challenge. Sport Relief and the Leeds Rugby Foundation are two great causes and I am sure the support of the public with donations will keep them going in the tough times that will lie ahead.

You can still donate money to the team my visiting their just giving website at www.justgiving.com/leedsrugbycycle

As one of the club’s proud to be part of the RFL’s Equalities Agenda, the Bradford Bull’s Foundation are pleased to celebrate the positive development and continual commitment it has in working alongside the governing body to develop links with BME and Faith communities, with the aim of overcoming barriers to participation and create a welcoming environment within the sport for everyone whatever their race, religion, faith or belief.

A number of enjoyable experiences such as Eid Mela celebrations, educational workshops, and Bradford Bulls/ Grand Final/ and World Club Challenge match experiences for those linked to local Council for Mosques community facility the Khidmat Centre have also sparked a real enthusiasm for the game with guests keen to work with their local communities to introduce Rugby League. Bull’s players have also got behind the efforts with Rikki Sheriffe and Craig

Kopczak pictured on their recent visit to pupils at Springwood Primary School, Manningham for an afternoon of Rugby League fun, whilst Glenn Hall and Heath L’Estrange brave the cold at the Emerging 9’s competition to support and pose for photos - this one with Yr 9 entrants from Challenge College. Community Rugby League Coach Duane Straugheir’s efforts have also being seen recently with both Challenge College and Dixons Academy (Allerton) breaking through to compete in the latest Bradford & Keighley Emerging 9’s competition, held at St Bede’s Grammar School. “It was pleasing to see so many local kids of various ethnicities coming together and actively competing- but more importantly really enjoying- Rugby League.”“It makes my job so satisfying when I see a number of age-groups from one school represented at something like this when a few weeks ago they had limited interest, we just need to ensure we back this up and promote the transition from school to club.”
