Dear SOS Outreach Family,

As we wind down from our 25th year of youth programs, I am struck by what an incredible journey it has been. From humble beginnings that stemmed from a shared vision to provide access to skiing and snowboarding for low-income Denver youth, SOS has evolved in dynamic ways since then -- now helping over 4,000 kids each year discover their voice and carve their own path across 23 mountain resorts in nine states. It is through our unchanged commitment to help youth gear up for life, that we set our sights on the next 25 years.

We celebrate through these pages the individuals and their achievements that your generosity has made possible over the past year. I hope these pages are a source of inspiration for you too and a reminder of what is possible when kids learn that they are unstoppable.

Your gift to SOS is a gift to many. As you look through, I hope you’ll read Alexis’ story and how he is working hard to pay your generous support forward.

In gratitude,

Seth

PROFILE OF A GRADUATEALEXIS, BATTLE MOUNTAIN HIGH SCHOOL CLASS OF ’19, RISING FIRST-YEAR AT UNIVERTITY OF COLORADO, BOULDER

Alexis has been in SOS for over 10 years and is an outstanding individual who exemplifies the core values of SOS both in his personal life and as a Junior Mentor in our program. At SOS graduation, Alexis gave a speech to his fellow participants summarizing his time with SOS and leaving them with some words of wisdom.

“To the mentoring students who are graduating after 5 years in SOS, I promise that you will have an awesome time working as a Junior Mentor. The leadership skills that you will learn there will help you all throughout the rest of your high school career, and hopefully your life as well. To the current Junior Mentors, it was a pleasure to work with all of you. Keep working hard in school and in SOS. You may not realize it now, but SOS will open many doors and provide plenty of opportunities for your future. The life skills and leadership skills I acquired during my time with SOS have helped me meet new people and helped open many doors and opportunities for me.”

LEADERS INSPIREAs the culmination to our four-year mentoring program, each year participants invite a diverse group of

community leaders together to participate in a Leadership Panel. Panelists share their backgrounds, career paths, and insights on the importance of skill development for success and fostering the courage to pursue your passions.

To highlight a few of the incredible speakers this year: Claudia Anderson, CEO of Parasol Tahoe Community Foundation, Paul Bancroft, Executive Director of Tahoe Safe Alliance, Dani Neumann, Colorado Parks and Wildlife

Ocer, Sheri Van Beek, Eagle County Sheri’s Oce, Drew Dodd, Beaver Creek Ski Patrol, Dana Polley, School Therapist at KidSuccess, and Stephen Martinez, Lead Multi-Media Designer at Colorado Department of

Transportation, among many others.

Beyond the fun on the slopes, SOS youth are also busy completing

hundreds of hours of community service and improvement initiatives in their communities. Younger participants have done everything from taking

care of horses at rescue facilities to stocking food baskets at community food banks and ringing the holiday bell for the Salvation Army.

Older participants take a more in-depth approach, identifying issues they see in their community and designing projects to help address those

issues. This year, participants identified topics such as community clean-up, human tracking, animal rescue, fire safety, and mental

health and wellness as their priority areas and designed community service projects to meet those needs.

GIVING BACK TO THE COMMUNITY

This winter, SOS partnered with Vail Resorts at Heavenly, Northstar, Park City, Beaver Creek, and with other corporate partners, Loveland, Copper, and evo to give participants an inside look into potential careers within the industry. Across locations, participants met with employees in leadership roles in a wide range of departments including ski school, mountain operations, snowmaking, ski patrol, lift operations, maintenance, and sales. They had the chance to ask questions, test out equipment, and learn firsthand the individual paths each leader took to get where they are today. The kids were able to get up close and personal with the snowcats, see ski patrol dogs in action, tour dining facilities, and even hear from ski school instructors! As many SOS students embark on college applications and others progress towards the career path of their dreams, these Industry Days provide opportunities to peer into current and future career possibilities where their passions can translate into professions.
