“MUSIC WITH THE MODERN TOUCH’
PERSONNEL OF THE TRIO Herbert Pilhofer, piano; Dale Olinger, guitar; Stuart Anderson, bass viol.
A well integrated group — flexible and talented. It is their avowed purpose to develop a style by which their group can be identified: in this album they show their interest in exploring various possibilities for this type of instrumentation.
~~
THE NONET Herbert Pilhofer, piano-celesta; Jack Coan, trumpet; Paul Binstock, french horn; Stanley Haugesag, trombone; David Karr, flute-bass
clarinet-baritone saxophone; Robert Crea, alto-bass clarinet; Dale Olinger, guitar; Robert Pope, drums; Stuart Anderson, bass viol.
Mr. Pilhofer says, “The nonet is actually an octet. | have been working with it for several years now — plus one! Dale Olinger has joined us with his guitar.” This group, which was originally organized as a rehearsal-experimental unit, does concert work
around Minnesota and adjoining states and is featured each summer at the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis.

Although Herbert Pilhofer should not be likened to a “Dr. Jekyll and
Mr. Hyde’, he nevertheless is on both sides of the fence: during the day
he is on the campus of the University of Minnesota where he is a staff
member; at night he practices what he preaches: he headquarters with
his group at a Minneapolis night club.
Herbert Pilhofer’s interpretation of the various selections in this album
suggest the European touch. He was born in Nuremburg, Germany, about
twenty-nine years ago and has been in the United States since 1954.
His musical activities in Germany included performances for the Armed
Forces radio network, Radio Munich, and several special shows for the USO.
