Question 6 - Progression

The Conversation

What went wrong

Our preliminary piece, the conversations had many issues, however this is just because this was our real first experience of filming and editing together. In this piece we had some serious continuity errors including magical envelopes and some badly cut audio. However it was good to make those mistakes then and learn from them ready for my opening sequence.

What went right

However some things I did learn during my preliminary task was how not to cross the line and how to use the correct media language when directing the piece. Also I had my first experience of using Final Cut Pro. I learnt how to edit both the video and the audio which helped me a lot when I was editing my opening sequence.

After the preliminary task

After the preliminary task I went through and analyzed the faults and errors I had made during the making of it and the editing. I found that I had editing a few shots together quite roughly and that some of the lighting wasn’t very good. During group and teacher feedback I discovered a huge continuity error that I had missed – The magically appearing envelope. However this meant I was very quick to notice any continuity errors in my opening sequence.

My opening sequence

What went wrong

There were quite a few issues I faced during the production and editing of my opening sequence. These included the camera going in and out of focus and some bad sound editing. We also struggled when filming our entire sequence in one shot. The camera wobbled quite a bit and some of the shots were closer than we intended them to be.

What went right

Lots of things went right with our opening sequence. There were no continuity errors in our piece and there were no issues with any of the Mise-en-scene. We had a good actor and the editing went well, especially our soundtrack. Amy produced our soundtrack using garage band and it worked well to help create the mood of our opening sequence.

The journey from beginning to end

Along the way I learnt many skills that helped me improve my media performance. I learnt how to film better shots and my editing skills also improved dramatically. I also learnt how to work better with other people as I know I can be a control freak. In addition my confidence in my media improved. To begin with I thought I was awful but now I feel confident in both filming and editing.
