Winter LessonsWe will be installing the Indoor Hitting Nets in November. Winter is the perfect time to work on the fundamentals and not get too overly concerned with ball flight. We will be offering video lessons and club fitting with the Vector Launch Monitor. The nets and instruction will be available during the Golf Shop hours throughout the winter months.

Winter Lesson Rates• Joe Titus 45 minutes: $50• Greg Roberts 45 minutes: $50

At sometime this month our grounds crew will cover the greens. The covering of the greens is a practice that prevents winter damage to the putting surfaces. Our greens at HWCC are different from any in the area in that they consist of more sand and therefore, drain much faster. Because they drain so quickly, the greens are susceptible to drying out and severe winter damage. We are fortunate enough to have specifically-designed covers that not only protect the grass from harsh winter winds, but actually increase soil temperature by 2-3 degrees. Even better news, the covers allow for perfect and rich-colored greens early in the spring.

November….how did this get here already? While we still have a few weeks left, I will count 2011 as a successful golf year despite the many challenges it provided. But what year doesn’t provide some sort of challenges? Greens are priority number one and we are ahead of where I expected them to be at this point in time. We have made strides in many other areas including bent grass maintenance as well as bunker maintenance. The conditions presented this fall have set us up well to enter next spring with very healthy plants that should be ready for the rigors of a golf season.

With just a few weeks left before permanent snowfall arrives, we have a few things remaining to complete to fully put the golf course to bed for the winter. We will be making fungicide applications to all greens, tees, and fairways for the prevention of snow mold. Dormant fertilizer applications will be made to all the same locations as well. These applications will help not only with a jumpstart in the spring but aid in the below ground growth of the plant as well. The irrigation system is scheduled to be winterized the week of November 15th prior to the onset of sustained below freezing temperatures. And lastly, greens tarping will need to take place sometime before frozen ground hits. Tarping dates are largely determined by weather conditions and not the calendar. Within the grounds department, the fall season is just as busy as the summer season, we just shift focus from daily maintenance and conditioning to tactics that promote long term plant health.

As I mentioned before, we are making dormant fertilizer applications to the turf during the month of November. If you are unsure of what I am referring to, dormant refers to turf grass that has stopped growing for the season. As it appears dormant to our eyes, below ground there is still some activity going on. This is a great time to give your lawn a little food too, remember the holiday schedule? A little food now will go a long way prior to your next fertilization next Memorial Day. S5365

We hope this issue finds you and your family well! 2011 New Member Family Welcome Tally: 28 Families! We would like to take a moment to welcome our newest Members who recently enrolled in membership with our family. We look forward to seeing you here at the Club very soon!

New Golf Members: Steve & Danielle Beauchamp of Mundelein Robert & Stephanie Mellinger of Vernon HillsWe also want to take a moment to welcome current Members who have decided to upgrade to a Resident Golf Membership. We thank you for your continued support of the Club! New Social Members: Douglas & Kelly Kerr of Somerset Hills CourtWalter Cosmo of Hawthorn Woods

Member Profile: Thank you to those Members who have filled out the Member Profile form that we recently sent out. This information is invaluable as it will help the Club determine what interests our Members have and what new programming the Club can introduce to the membership in 2012 in order to improve your overall experience here at HWCC.

However, we will eventually need some of you to help us out. In order to begin introducing “Clubs within the Club” we will need Members to volunteer to help spearhead certain club groups (like the current Book Club). From there we will help facilitate and promote these clubs to the membership so these groups can meet here at the Club on a regular basis. Members with the same interests can get involved with these clubs and begin having more fun. Our goal is to make the Clubhouse the “hub” of dining and social activity.

We would appreciate you taking the time to fill this form out and return it to the Club. If you have misplaced this form, please let us know and we will be more than happy to provide you with a new one.

Membership Committee: Our committee meets on the last Thursday of each month from 6:30-7:30 pm (unless that day falls on a holiday). We are still interested in welcoming more Club ambassadors to help serve on this committee. We could definitely use more Social Member participation, but would gladly accept Golf Members as well. As a reminder, our Membership Committee will assist the Club with membership enrollments, prospect events and with welcoming new Members to the Club. If you are interested in additional information about this committee, please feel free to reach out to me.

Congratulations Team SLAM DUNK!: A big thank you goes out to all of the Members who participated in our first “Bags at the Woods” bags tournament here last month. We had a great time on a beautiful day! A BIG congratulation goes out to the Champions…SLAM DUNK (Larry Butz and John Einarsen). We also would like to give kudos to our second place finishers who battled with every bag toss…THE BUMS (Neil Chernikoff and Tom Baumgartner). We will do this again!

We thank you for your continued support of Hawthorn Woods Country Club!

RacquetsThe Drive The drive is the one offensive shot available to us in Platform Tennis. A drive opportunity can be generated off of a short serve or a good lob by the back court team. Whether you drive with your forehand or backhand you should always remember these four rules:

Rule 1- Put it in play

This sounds simple enough but it is amazing how many players don’t give the other team the chance to miss a volley. Putting it in play also means missing it long if you do miss. A good miss long at least gives the other team a chance to miss by playing the out ball. This happens all of the time in paddle, because the court is smaller.

Rule 2 – Location, Location, Location

You should always be thinking at the team, thru the team, but never around the team on a paddle court. Start with a ball between the team to see how they react. If they both look at each other with neither playing the ball you should look to exploit their lack of communication. If they cover the middle nicely look to hit the hitting hip of the player farthest from the net. This means if they are a right handed player you hit the ball towards their right hip. Finally, do they volley with a forehand or backhand? If you have a player that likes to hit forehand volleys you should aim your drives to the other side of their body forcing them to flip their paddle.

Rule 3 - Spin

Look to create topspin on your drives. This not only helps consistency, but can help keep the ball lower over the net forcing your opponents to volley below net level. If you have ever hit a volley from below net level you know how hard it can be to control. Generating topspin is easy on the paddle court. Simply close your paddle face so the top edge of the paddle is leading your swing. Take your contact point just in front of your front foot as you step towards the ball. From there make sure your finish comes up and across to your opposite ear.

Rule 4 – Power

If you have mastered rules 1 – 3 you are now ready to add pace to your drive. Although in paddle it is never necessary to blast the ball a million miles an hour when you are driving the correct ball. For you more advanced player out there, put the ball in play at the player off of the net. If you choose power, the ball will travel higher and be easier for your opponent to return.

There are definitely other opportunities for you to drive during the point. You should be able to drive off the deck and out of the screens consistently. Now would also be the time to start looking at adding a two-handed backhand to keep your opponents guessing on location to hit their overheads. If you are looking to fine tune your drive contact Adam or Jason in the Tennis Shop at 847-847-3265.
