Aloha KakouLeslie Wilcox, President & CEO

As our PBS Hawaii board chairman, Neil Hannahs, sometimes reminds board and staff in considering what’s best: “It’s a k - akou thing.” K - akou, of course, refers to the Hawaiian value of inclusiveness. It’s about all of us.

Neil’s paying job is managing agricul-tural lands for the Kamehameha Schools, stewarding resources in an island state. He cares about doing the right thing now and for future generations. I see k - akou at work every day at Hawaii’s only public television station. It may surprise you to learn that PBS Hawaii has only 30 staffers, considerably less than the workforce of the local (com-mercial) TV network affiliates. Each school year, we take great pride

and care in training about 20 paid college students in television production. Our small size and important educa-tional mission mean that we perform as a team, with each member prepared to shift focus as needed. We all work shoulder to

shoulder while still handling our primary responsibilities. We feel privileged to steward resources that serve the entire community in these most isolated islands in the world. PBS Hawaii relies on viewer support in addition to grants, corporate underwriting and other funding. Many people, working together across our island chain and on the continent, elevate the quality of life in our community and open a window to the world through PBS Hawaii.

In Hawaii, it’s about our commitment to each other and to the whole. And to future generations. Mahalo for being one of these caring

people. It is indeed a k - akou thing.

Mahalo, We feel privileged to steward resources that serve the entire

community in these most isolated islands in the world.

“Among all my favorite PBS Hawaii programs, I have to say that whenever I watch Rick Steve’s Europe, the visual staging of the locations are very educational and enter-taining that most of the time I feel like packing my bags right after the show. Having traveled to some of the featured destinations myself, I strongly believe that the experience brought to the viewers by the show is accurate, realistic and valuable.”

Gene GrossTravel Enthusiast

“I probably am not the only one but I have well-kept and prized possessions that date back 1932. My favorite program is Antiques Roadshow. I think the show is not just about the little nor old things with unknowingly tremen-dous appraised values, but I enjoy the stories behind the items. The show is about reminiscing the past, about generations and traditions, and I think that is important. But really, I sometimes wonder how much my old calabash bowl is worth.”

Elaine StrokaRetired Educator

“I’ve been watching PBS for a long time now and tune in to watch favorites as Na Mele: Traditions in Hawaiian Song and NOVA. The performances on Na Mele are very beautiful and unique. I watch NOVA because of the many range of topics that involve science, art and culture.”

GREAT PERFORMANCESThe Police CertifiableTHURSDAY, MARCH 5 | 8:30PMRocketing to stardom and world-wide fame in the early 1980s, Andy Summers, Stewart Copeland and Sting — better known as the Police — boldly revitalized the 1970s rock ‘n’ roll scene with their signature fusion of punk, New Wave and reggae sounds. Despite five smash albums and six Grammy Awards between 1980 and 1984,

the Police parted ways in 1986, with frontman Sting embarking on a successful solo career. More than two decades after the break-up, Sting, Summers and Copeland teamed up one last time in 2007 to launch the band’s farewell tour from Buenos Aires, Argentina.

It has been a very busy time for PBS Hawaii’s transmission department of one. Beginning the week after Thanksgiving, I was busy with the transmitter installation of Oahu’s final digital transmission system which is due to be activated on February 18. In addition to Oahu, the Maui digital system was being prepared for its debut on January 15, the Kauai analog translator system needed to be modified to work with a digital signal before Jan. 15 and the Big Island transla-tor system required major changes to keep operating in analog before Jan. 15.

So how do I feel the transition went? It was pretty much what I expected, except for the Big Island... more on that later. Our analog TV tower on Oahu had been at the same site on Kapiolani Blvd. for more than 40 years. We knew the move to our new location at Palehua (above Makakilo) might create some initial problems. People who always had been able to receive our broadcast signal might suddenly have trouble tuning us in. On the other hand, some people who may have never been able to get us before could be get-

ting PBS Hawaii for the first time. In addition, the temporary UHF channel we are licensed to use by the FCC would be an unfamiliar over-the-air channel. So on February 18 we will return to our beloved Channel 11 frequency – a place where viewers are used to finding Ha-waii’s public television station.

The Maui transition went off without a hitch. At noon on January 15, we shutdown the analog transmitter, which was broadcasting on Channel 10, and switched on the digital transmitter, also broadcasting on Channel 10. This mo-mentous occasion was over 20 years in the making. After many public hearings, meetings with special interest groups, propagation studies, site surveys, and governmental pro-cesses, the site at Ulupalakua Ranch was finally agreed upon by all. The TV broadcasters were aware of the potential loss of coverage on Maui, Molokai, Oahu and the Big Island, but

The Dust is Settling: A Digital TV Updateby Steve Komori, Vice President - Content Delivery

“Some people who may have never been able to get us before could be getting PBS Hawaii for the first time.”

Page 7: HENRY LIVE - kmeb.org

due to the loss of a lease at the summit of Haleakala and the subsequent move to Ulupalakua Ranch, the loss of coverage would have happened even if we continued with analog broadcasts. So in the end, even though we fought to keep the summit site so that our coverage would not change, we ended up being forced to move and accept the loss in coverage.

Kauai’s translator system, though still analog, had to receive the KHET digital signal and convert it to analog to keep the system going. This was done in early January. We will begin transitioning Kauai over to digital once we have completed the Oahu digital change mentioned above, and/or when the existing translators require replacement.

For the Big Island, which was to stay in analog no matter what others were saying, a sequence of failures, mistakes and weather delayed the implementation of a relay station to get our signal from Maui to Hilo. It may seem like we were not

prepared, but if all things occurred as they should have, from the shipping company not losing our shipment of equipment, or the high winds and rains or the transmit-ters being damaged in shipping, most of the Big Island would not have noticed any change in the way they received our signal. The only area that was affected by the transition was the northeastern side of Hawaii (Hamakua Coast)… which again we were forced to acknowledge as a potential loss.

Overall, the dust is settling on the transi-tion of our full-power transmitters, but I am just starting to build-out the digital trans-lator system... on both Kauai and the Big Island... anyone seen the sledge hammer?

Steve Komori’s update was written February 9 to accommodate this publication’s production deadline. Please go to www.pbshawaii.org to read Steve’s most recent blog entry and for the most updated information on the digital transition.

PBS HAWAII ALOHA DINERS CLUB CARD

Theresa and her husband Geneson Coloma have been PBS Hawaii supporters for over an impressive twenty years. Through the years, they have enjoyed many fine PBS programs such as Masterpiece Mystery! and Antiques Roadshow. Their son, who is now a student at Northwestern University, grew up watching educational shows such as Sesame Street and Mr. Roger’s Neighbor-hood. Theresa also loves to catch Celtic Woman for what she calls, “awesome per-formances at an extraordinarily high level.”

Geneson and Theresa also love to eat out and the Aloha Diners Club Card has been instrumental in saving them money. The-

resa says, “The first thing I always ask when I go to a restaurant is whether they ac-cept the Aloha Diners Club Card. I carry it around with me everywhere. In fact, I use the Card so often that when I visit this one restaurant, the waitress knows right away that I’m going to use it. ”

The couple frequently goes to the Mon-terey Bay Canners in Aiea where they meet up with friends. There, Geneson enjoys a hot bowl of creamy Clam chowder while Theresa enjoys the restaurant’s fresh salads. Many of their friends are impressed with how much the Colomas save on their final bill. Geneson and Theresa encourage

their friends to support PBS Hawaii, too.

Theresa and Geneson have supported PBS Hawaii over the years simply because they derive much enjoyment from viewing the programs. Theresa says, “Bottom line is, if you enjoy it, you are obligated to support it - and the rewards we get from watching the programs are priceless.”

For a new or renewing contribution of $65, you can enjoy the benefits of the Aloha Diners Club Card, and ensure that PBS Ha-waii will continue to enrich our community.

Student volunteers ages 16 years and up have the opportunity to serve and connect with their community through the PBS Hawaii 2009 Sum-mer Volunteer Program. While volun-teering here, students can not only fulfill community service requirements but also build strong pre-professional skills as well. Our volunteers will see firsthand how a nonprofit television station operates by assisting with a variety of services. Most of the tasks will be clerical, but students may also assist

with our on-air Pledge Drives, com-munity outreach events and other station projects. We want to ensure that volunteers have a rewarding and meaningful experience at PBS Hawaii, so we will try our best to coordinate activities and tasks suited to the students’ in-terests and skills. For more informa-tion, or if you would like to receive an application, please call our Volunteer Coordinator at 973-1375.

NATURE Kilauea: Mountain of FireSunday, March 29 | 7PM

Kilauea, on Hawaii’s Big Island, is the world’s most active volcano. Its latest eruption began in 1983 and hasn’t stopped. Since that time, it has created 544 acres of new land and consumed 200 homes. But as we watch nature’s own fireworks display and witness the devastation wrought by flowing lava, we’ve also been able to observe a process that’s central to life on these islands. The most spectacular moment of creation is when lava pours into the ocean creating new land; it is here that filmmaker Paul Atkins finds himself getting a shot few have ever filmed — the cataclysmic meeting of 2,000-degree lava and 75-degree ocean water — a sight to behold.

NOVA Last Extinction | Tuesday, March 31 | 8pmAccording to a controversial new claim, the extinction of more than 34 types of large prehistoric animals (or “megafauna”) was caused not by climate change or the arrival of the first human hunters, but by the massive breakup of a comet over the Great Lakes region. NOVA explores this provocative new theory about what killed off America’s mammoths and may have come close to extinguishing early human populations as well.
