MUSEUM DESIGN | IN THE URBAN CBD

The Center of The Urban CBD

The site is located in the urban CBD area. Its north and east boundary face to a river that goes cross the whole city. The local government makes endeavor to build some public parks along the river to host the civic activities and creat nice landscape and views of the city. The south and west boundary is adjacent to the commercial area in which a large number of people stream is contented everyday.

The proposed museum is no longer just a enducational building or a display platform when it is seated in this context. It is not only a part of the urban landscape or a complement of the existing commercial function, but also a node of connection between commercial and landscape, a transit area of different lifestyle and a icon for itself.

Encoding Matter will explore the relationship between behavioral and evolutionaryoptimization design methodologies. The studio will examine the interaction between localbehaviors or micro design intent and global concerns such as structural and environmentaloptimization. This inquiry will focus on the relation-ship between the internal logic of agenerative system and the external influences of force and environment. We will explore theinteraction of open behavioral systems and evolutionary systems that seek an idealoutcome.

The studio will posit a behavioral design methodol-ogy, re-conceptualizing design as theorganization of matter. This behavioral understand-ing of design will focus on the dissolutionof normative hierarchies that operate within architectural organization and tectonics. A nonlinearalgorithmic design methodology is proposed capable of displacing existing hierarchiesthrough the emergent operation of self-organizing systems.

In this project, the algorithm is emerged from the research of the performance of material - laex and the growth of leaves. The pattern of a leaf could be considered as a combination of strands and membranes. Strands perform as the structure when the membranes illustrate the planes and space. In this system, the thickness of strands and membranes, the length of strnads, the distance of different strands and the spam of the membrances are parameters that are capable of being driven by designed multi-agents and constrains.

The performece of the latex gives us the inspirasion of the behavior of agents. Latex, known as the common elastic material, could generate force when drag it. This force would lead to the thickness and transparency change of the material. The entire system of the project is multi-agents based and those agents learn from the material

ENCODING MATTERMATTER Structure [ [ PaternPatern ] ]

To achieve the purpose, we need establish a feasible system for both coding and structure. We conceive the system consists of strands and membranes. Strands would work as skeleton while membrances offer us space. Leaves provide with a very good paradigm.

VILLA DESIGN | PEACE OVER LAKE

This villa is designed for an painting artist. The site is in a mountain area that far away from urban area. South and west sides of the site are surrounded by moutains while north side own a great view of the exsiting lake. A state owned highway that goes from north to south is built aside the lake. A small town is several miles far from the site. Therefore, the environment of the proposed project is very peaceful and beautifull that could provide the client with a ideal work neighborhood.

COMMERCIAL STREET DESIGN | GLUE THE URBAN TEXTURE

The site is covered by the Urban CBD Accessibility of the site The urban landscape around the site

This project is located in a small city and in a walkable distance to the central park of the town. Some big mall, supermarket and retails are around the central park, which form the CBD of the town. So, it seems that the proposed commercial street has to face the compiti-tion from the old commercial facilities. However, the advantage of the site is that it is surrounded by three large housing neighborhoods which could provide with a stable customer resource. So complementary and mutually beneficial should be the strategy for the project and it would also play a role as glue to establish more connection between neighborhoods.

Sanlitun Village is currently very famous commercial street in Beijing. Bars, retails, restaurants and entertainments are contained in the street. The commercial activities in the street are greatly benefited from its diverse space both interior and exterior.

The Tianyi Square is the most famous landmark in Ningbo City now. The Shuijin Street, designed as a inner street of the square, has the similar volumn and function as our proposed project. On the ground level, there are retails and restaurants. On the upper levels, there are malls and bars.

The traditional Chinese alley has very friendly space that fits for small and middle scale commercial activities.

SENIOR HOUSING DESIGN | USC EMERITI CENTER

The University of Southern California is thinking to build an Emeriti Center for its retired college faculties. The purpose of the Emeriti Center is to create a place for those faculties who still want to live around the campus and make contributions to the campus community. Therefore, basically the project is a mixed use building, including housing for those retired faculties, classrooms and trainning rooms for students and members of the Emeriti Center, auditorium for lecture and commercial space for the public.

There are two big difficulties of the project. Firstly, the last cornner of the campus could be used for the project is in the northwest cornner which has poor connection to the campus. The site seems to be isolated from the major area of the university that would lower the value of the goal that make the best use of the sourses of the retired faculties. Secondly, the proposed program in the project is so diverse that the requirements of the privacy of them are quite different.

BIRD FEEDER DESIGN | BEAUTY OF THE GESTURE

The purpose of the bird feeder design assignment is to be familiar with the Rhino and trained to make physical model by operating with lasercut device.

In this assignment, I was assigned a specific bird ---- Yellow Warbler. It belongs to the order of Passeriformes and the Family of Parulidae. It is a very common summer resident in California. It is 11.5 cm long and weighs 9 g. The wingspan is about 8 inces. The bird feed on insects and spiders, but northern races will also take some berries, namely in their winter quarters.

Yellow warbler is a small size and agile bird. Its feeding pattern is flexible,flying-picking or ground-feeding. When a yellow warble is searching for food on a branch, it can keep various posture and jump on a brance or jump from one branch to another. Therefore, the idea of my design is to creat a frame that would be able to show the beauty of the various gesture of the bird.
