Welcome to issue two of Absolute Bridal!

Winter is a beautiful time of year to be a

bride, and a great time to plan for your

wedding whatever time of year. We love

winter here at Absolute Bridal, and can’t get

enough of snow-covered scenes, which is

why we love this issue’s real weddings.

Nicole and Tim tied the knot last year at the

Reid Rooms, and Vanessa and David

enjoyed thick snow on their day last

December. If you’re more accustomed to

warmer weather, we have some great

features on weddings abroad, with

inspiration from real wedding couple Sara

and John, who wed in Italy last year. Besides

that, we have pages and pages of bridal

fashion, fab ideas for cosy weddings indoors

in our Emporium, and pages of inspirational

venues and photography. I’m delighted to

announce my own engagement too! I will

be joining you real brides-to-be in the all the

planning, excitement and stress of

organising my own big day. There are now

THREE brides-to-be at Absolute Bridal- all of

us very different, but all of us thrilled to be

sharing your journey.

Happy reading!

TheTeamThis issue, we asked the team: What would

your ideal honeymoon destination be?

Director- Vanessa ChakirCaribbean - every time for me (still not beenbut I am for my honeymoon!) I go for relaxation, sun, sea and s.... sand of course! Ithink a honeymoon should be a special memory of a fantastic place for you both toenjoy the beginning of your marriage...what away to start.

Director- Linda GrantIt has to be the Maldives Four Seasons Resort-ab fab. White sand, green/blue sea, blue sky,the beach more or less to yourself… Fantasticfood and wine, and fantastic (but very expen-sive) accommodation. All you need is the rightman! I had my 25th wedding anniversary there. We looked at it for our 40th and the cost is now£12k B&B! How I wish I could go back…

Art Direction and Design- Hannah LastWe had booked Santhiya resort for our honeymoon, but unfortunately we had to cancelat the last minute: a five star exclusive beachapartment on a remote part of Koh Phanghan inThailand. Lush tropical forests, crystal clear bayand private beach…Instead, six months later weembarked on a Caribbean cruise for 10 days. Wesoon found out that it’s not our idea of Bliss! Asexperienced travellers we should have knownbetter!

Editor- Kath EastoeMy ideal honeymoon would be Italy. I’d visitVenice and Florence for the art, zoom aroundRome on a moped and learn to cook in Tuscany.I’d wake up in a VW Campervan overlooking theolive groves, and enjoy plenty of red wine…bliss!

Sales Executive- Jay MehmetMy ideal honeymoon destination would be BoraBora Island in Tahiti. Discover true paradise andluxury in stunning blue waters, pure white sandbeaches and the preserved nature of your veryown private island boasting a unique botanicalgarden, 360 degree panoramic views, luxurioussunsets, and an incredible coral garden. OMG Iwant to be there now.

A Winter’sTale

REAL We d d i n g

Despite being married for a year, Mr and Mrs Dean have onlyrecently begun married life. That’s because for most of the year,Tim is known as Sergeant Tim Dean of the Third Regiment RoyalHorse Artillery in the British Army. Based in Germany, he metNicole Jarman at nightclub CM20 in Harlow while on leave, although their mums lived just around the corner from each other.“We had a few dates before Tim flew back to Germany, thenwhen he was on block leave he came back and we spent everyday together,” says Nicole. The couple had a few dates inLondon, but Nicole struggled with the distance and decided tomove to Germany.

Just before Nicole moved, she and Tim had a date ice skating atSomerset House, in November 2009. “I always wanted to go iceskating there, so I booked it and it looked magical with the hugeTiffany Christmas tree. We were sat underneath it admiring thejewels and decorations and the next thing I know Tim is down onone knee!” remembers Nicole. “I thought he was joking genuinely! But he said ‘do I look like I’m joking?’ so of course Isaid yes.” Nicole moved out to Tim’s camp in Hohne, Germany in April2010- not the ideal place to plan an Essex wedding from. “My

mother-in-law did pretty much everything,” explains Nicole. “She would send me three pictures of a bouquet and ask me tochoose, and even found decorations for the venue.” Finding thevenue was a little easier. “I looked on the internet at a fewplaces, then my sister moved in just behind the Reid Rooms,”Nicole recalls. “I loved it- it looked so cute. And they let me bringin my own caterers, drink and let us bring in anything we liked.” Aswell as the flexibility of the venue, Nicole and Tim loved the cosyfeel with the fireplace and lounge area. “Our ceremony tookplace in the ceremony room- with the beams it really felt like aspecial room. Then we walked across the courtyard for mulledwine and canapés”

Decorated with holly and fairy lights, Nicole loved the seasonaland subtle touches that decorated the venue, “there were poinsettias dotted around and a huge Christmas tree- it waselegant and lovely.” However, the winter weather played havocwith the carefully-laid plans. “It had been snowing heavily threedays before the wedding- so I had to cancel my hen do,” Nicoleadmits. Tim also had to cancel his stag do, thanks to the weather.“Lots of the lads I asked were coming from up North, and couldn’t make it down for the stag or the wedding,” he says. Thesnow also caused the band to cancel. However, the night beforethe wedding, the snow stopped falling, and the couple wereblessed with sunshine on the big day.

Nicole and Tim Dean married at the Reid Rooms in December last year, aftera relationship forged across two countries

On the big day, Nicole wore adress she had found on eBay,that she had altered to fit perfectly, and had it customised to her taste.“Everything I found in bridalshops was too much like a‘prom’ dress; I wanted something plain and elegant,”

Nicole explains. She also ruledout bridal tiaras for the samereason, and chose a jewelled headpiece from Glitzy Secrets.Tim wore military dress for theoccasion- a rare opportunityto wear the ‘number one’blue’ uniform reserved for veryspecial occasions. Decorated

with gold braids and his sergeant stripes, Tim lookedevery inch the handsomehero, while his ushers worenumber twos - the green military dress. “The best man Ioriginally asked was deployedto Afghanistan- and couldn’ttime his RnR time with the

wedding,” Tim explains. “So right at the last minute, I asked my cousin to stepin - he had three days to writea speech!” A civilian, he didn’t wear uniform, butNicole and Tim were thrilledwith their best man.

Doing it Their WayThe flexibility of the hiring TheReid Rooms as a venue meantthat Nicole could choose herown touches. Chicks Cateringwere hired for the weddingbreakfast of Leek and PotatoSoup, Chicken Chasseur withdauphinoise potatoes and adessert trio of apple pie, Etonmess and caramel fudgebrownies. “Chicks were brilliant, they served our owncanapés and drinks, and created a menu which was justwhat I wanted,” says Nicole.“They did so much more for usthan we expected.” A friend baked the traditionalfour tier cake as a weddingpresent, and they hired a toastmaster for the day- ChrisWebb. “He was fabulous- hewas young, funny and everytime I need something, he wasthere,” Nicole says. “He sortedeverything from the buttonholes, and even sourced a ceremonial sword to cut thecake with!”

“Despite the chaos, the snowwas amazing on the day,” saysNicole. “My dad drove his classic car all the way fromSuffolk with no roof! The thoughtof him wrapped up in gogglesand scarves is hilarious!” In theend, the couple posed with thecar but didn’t use it- so Nicole’sdad drove it all the way home

again! “It’s hard work being amilitary wife,” says Nicole. “Aswell as the worry of Tim beingaway on tour I have got usedto being by myself. Now he’shome I have to share my homewith my husband!” Tim continued his training forAfghanistan straight after thewedding, so the couple stillhaven’t honeymooned, andstarted married life ten monthsafter their wedding. “We’rethinking about going toMontego Bay for a honeymoon, and to celebrate Tim’s 30th andhis achievements inAfghanistan.” And with theirwhole lives ahead of them, what a way to start.

The Wedding DresserOriginally from Perth, Australia, LynSirkett, aka The Wedding Dresser, started sourcing wedding dresses in October 2010when a friend asked for her help sourcing her gown.Amazed that she found it so difficult to find a quality dress for under £1,000, Lyn used her contacts in Australia and around the world tosource a selection of unique dresses that she nowoffers through her bespoke service. “I offer abespoke service; in so much that I am mobileand can visit a bride with a range of dresses inher size or she can visit my home salon based inNorth Essex ” says Lyn. “However, wherever the bride is I am happy to organise an obligation free dress fitting and have seenbrides from Kent, Dorset and Lancashire!

“As I don't have the overheads of a shop Iam able to pass on those savings tobrides It costs anywhere between £400and £895 for one of my dresses - whichis significantly cheaper than manydresses found elsewhere,” Lynexplains. Lyn offers a range of traditional dresses and more uniquestyles, and some in lighter fabrics, such as chiffon, that are perfectfor overseas weddings (seepages 87-88). “I love having brides have theopportunity to try as manystyles as possible, as one thingI've learned is that trying avariety can often help abride to identify what suitsher and how she wants tolook on the day” Lynadds. “Many a bridehachanged her mindwhen she's found 'theone' and I'm nottalking about thehusband to be!”

Makeup MasterclassSam Easter from A Beautiful You talks us

through her favourite products to create a flawless wedding look

Your wedding will probably be your most photographedday of your life and the photos that are taken will be treasuredfor many years and, perhaps, by many generations. So yourmakeup should be classic, simple, and timeless.

• Primers Use face and eye primer to help your makeup last

longer. Consider something like Smashbox’s Photo Finish Primerto help your makeup last all day long.

• Foundation Choose makeup that is long-lasting. There are

many long-wearing foundations on the market that provide

beautiful, flawless coverage that won’t look heavy, but will last

the day. I like Estee Lauder’s Double Wear, for normal to oily

skin or Chanel Vitalumiere foundation for dry skin, followed by

setting powder.

• Matte Makeup Winter time makes everyone want to get out

the shine and the glitter, but beware of this for your wedding.

Though glitter and shimmer are beautiful, they can

photograph badly, and may make you look greasy. Stick to

neutral shades of matte makeup. For your cheeks, bronzer

shades will give you a healthy glow back in the colder months.

• Eyes One of the most important aspects of bridal makeup is

the eyes. Smokey eyes work very well for autumn, deep tones

for winter. I recommend using shades of brown, taupes, golds

or mossy green tones. Neutral

pinks, purples and silvers are also

classic wintery, timeless colours.

Choose eyeliner that is smudge-

proof and waterproof, as your big

day is an emotional event!

answers yourwedding dayhair dilemmas

AbsoluteB e a u t y

Ask The Expert

“I would advise that, unless yourveil is an heirloom, you have a

hair trial to explore thepossibilities for your weddinghair before you actually buy

your veil, this will ensure you arenot too restricted on your

hairstyle. The length, fullnessand placement of the veil will

all have a bearing on the suitability of certain styles.”

A: Veils come in various guises but, if you havedecided to wear onethere are some pointsto consider. The mainthing is that the veil, hairstyle and of coursethe dress, need towork well together.

“If you want to wear your hairdown, it is important to considerthe weight of the veil as, with alonger, heavy veil, a half-up domight be better because therewill be a foundation to anchor ittowhich will prevent it from slipping. A glimpse of long luscious waves and big curls canlook stunning under a veil butremember that the hair shouldnever hang lower than the veilitself.”

“Veils are traditional but manyBrides are choosing to wearthem in a less traditional way. Forexample placed at the back ofthe head either under a high bunor on top of a low nape design.Single tier veils work well withthese looks as the hair and anydetail on the dress can still beseen without the final look beingtoo cluttered. So remember, ifyou are going to wear your veillower down the back of yourhair, your veil should stop eitherabove or below any detail onthe back of your dress (such aslacing or embellishments), butnever cut through the middle ofit.”

“Vintage looks are so popular atthe moment, short bobbed hairlooks fabulous with a short shoulder length or birdcage veilto emphasise the vintage themewith the hair finger waved or setin pin curls. Longer hair is bestworn up with these types of veil, either a pleat, a low nape roll, twist or even a big side bun.”

The Serious SlimmerThe Dukan Diet has beenhailed as THE diet for 2012, andwas incredibly popular lastyear. Based on phases, it has avaguely scientific approachthat seems to work- membersof the Absolute Bridal teamrave about it! All I can sayis…French women never getfat so this MUST be good. Four‘phases’ are targeted throughout the diet, which wascreated by Frenchman DrDukan. You can eat as muchas you like of certain foodsthroughout each phase; thefirst phase relies on protein andis the ‘attack’ quick weight lossphase, followed phase 2 whichadds more foods. Phase three‘consolidates’ the diet, to helpavoid the dreaded weight gainas you increase your caloriesand the final phase offersonline support to help youkeep the weight off. Euro Diet is perfect for kick-starting weightloss and based around all sorts of clever science. Here’s what they say: “Our bodytends to fuel itself primarily with carbohydrates, but if your carbohydrateintake is reduced it will look for othersources of nourishment. Both Phase one andtwo of Eurodiet are low in carbohydratesand this is why after about 72 hours of following the diet, your body will start to produce ketones and enter a state of ketosis. Being in a state of ketosis encourages your body to use its fat andmuscle stores as its primary sources of energy in lieu of carbohydrates. However ifadequate levels of protein are consumed during this process, muscle tissue can be maintained, allowing yourbody to keep its hard earned muscle andlose the unwanted fat! Euro Diet has takenthis established method of weight loss onestep further. With the help of respected andrenowned chefs and nutritionists, theirexpert team has developed a range of delicious quality protein meals and snackswhich contain the vitamins, minerals andhigh quality proteins to stay healthy whenlosing weight.” The spokesperson doesn’trecommend following this for more than afew weeks, so it’s ideal of you’ve got a fortnight left to shift the last few pounds. www.eurodiet.co.uk

Well, since I got engaged a few weeks ago, all I can think about is

losing weight! I put on a LOT of weight when I was pregnant, and

have found it difficult to lose. Before having my son I was 9st7lb,

and when I weighed myself last January I was 11st3lb! So I’ve

decided to try and lose some weight. I’m technically overweight,

and would like my BMI to be a healthy measurement, so ideally I’d

like to lose a stone and half before my big day, and try and get

down from a 12/14 to a healthy size ten. I had success earlier in

2011 with Cook Yourself Thin- the books and diet club online, as well

as regime of regular exercise. As a busy, working mum I don’t have

the time for the gym so I used the Nintendo Wii Fit Plus for 30 minute

a few times a week, and it made me feel like I was doing my body

so much good. Annoyingly, I put all the weight back on throughout

a summer of cake, booze and BBQ food. So now it’s time to shape

up. Out with the cake, in with the green tea and rice cakes! I will

base my on healthy plan (I find ‘diets’ too restrictive with my busy

life) on high protein, low carbs, and try and cut down on fats and

snacks. I have downloaded the My Fitness Pal calorie counter app,

which is great for keeping check on what you’re eating. Team AB is

also trying the Dukan Diet and Slimming World, so we will keep you

updated. The wedding’s in June, so I will need everyone’s support

to get me thin again! Wish me luck,

Making your wedding unique and memorable is something that is a wonderful creative challenge for everybride-to-be. You want your big day to stylish, individual and yet somehow personal to you and your husband. Sowhere do you start? First, build a colourscheme or theme. Inspiration boards, mood sheets and wedding planner diariesare a great place to start. Blogs and websites (as well as magazines) are wonderful inspiration, and websitePinterest (www.pinterest.com) is a perfectplace for brides to seek and record inspiration that you can access from anywhere. Stuck for ideas? Then read on…

Setting the sceneAs well as a place to sit and indulge yourculinary fantasies, the table is a great wayto express your style. Using floral centrepieces is a classic way of dressing avenue, and you can get creative with jamjars and vases, or use a company to create beautiful centrepieces and displaysfor you. Wedding Simplicity is a companythat offers everything under one roof from hiring giant martini glasses as centrepieces, to arranging flowers anddecorating the venue for you. Table decoration from Wedding Simplicityincludes table linen and chair covers, fishbowl and bird cage centrepieces, table

planners and stationery and even achocolate fountain. Natalie Douglas, whoruns the business, says “it’s ideal for peoplewho are short on time- it’s a one-stop wedding shop.” With two options available: DIY (hire only) or Set-up (fulldelivery and venue-dressing), it’s suitablefor any budget. “We started the businesswith budget in mind- you can hire beautiful quality chair covers etc. withoutpaying over the odds,” Natalie says.Wedding Simplicity is based in BishopsStortford and travels across Herts andEssex. Flowers are a simple yet effectiveway of decorating tables. Choosing acolour scheme is simple, choosing an arrayof contemporary floral designs and bloomswill be the hard bit. At the moment, vintage roses in teapots or wild flowers injam jars are hugely popular, but contemporary floral displays can create astunning centre piece. Rosanna’s Florist ofDistinction in Watford creates some uniquearrangements that will get your guests talking. Most venues or caterers have white chinaplace settings included in the hire price, but if you’re looking for something a littledifferent there are several companiesoffering vintage china hire- perfect for anEnglish garden party or tea party theme.Idyllic Days offer beautiful china and prophire across the South East- from teapots to

cake stands, and even offer event andwedding styling. Similarly, Vintage Flairsupply beautiful vintage china, cutlery andlinen for hire and can also come and styleyour venue for the big day, with free delivery across Essex and Kent. For a fullvintage tea party set-up, contact PlumFairy, who can provide afternoon tea andcupcakes as well as china, bunting andprop hire.

Wedding favours are a wonderful way to

thank your guests, and unleash your

creative juices. Homemade favours are

easy to do if you’re a great cook or

baker- biscuits or cakes can make lovely

personal gifts, while retro sweetie bags are

hugely popular. However, if you want

something truly British, why not hand out

personalised seaside rock? The RockPeople make bespoke rock for wedding

favours and place setting. First, choose

your picture for the label (something

romantic, maybe?) then choose the

colour, flavour and a personalised centre

with your names! Fun, retro and let’s face

it, who doesn’t like rock? Another fun

option is mini things. Tiptree jams are world

famous, so why not bring a bit of Essex to

your wedding? Wilkins & Sons have

launched a wedding favour range of tiny

jars of delicious preserves. Choose from

Orange and Whisky Marmalade or

Strawberry and Champagne jam, and

even have them delivered to the venue

by their Red Moped delivery service.

Southenders Rossi Ice Cream are also

introducing personalised ice cream tubs,

perfect for wedding favours and pudding

after the wedding breakfast.

Gastro GuestsThe biggest expense at your wedding isthe food and drink, and it’s also the focusof your table decoration. The weddingbreakfast should reflect your tastes andtheme, as well as be good value formoney. Most caterers offer sample menuson their website, but arrange a meetingwith them or a tasting evening so you canget a better idea of their menu. PremierCrew Hospitality offer a bespoke catering service, and a bar service, but they’remore than just a caterer. “We can helpplan everything from finding a venue, tobooking entertainment and other suppliers,” says Naomi Pitt Roche ofPremier Crew. “Even on a shoestring youcan have the wedding of your dreams.”The company can offer a complete wedding planning service, and havetaken embryonic ideas such a ‘medieval’or ‘James Bond’ theme and createdunique and personal events. And when itcomes to catering they are also as flexible

creative.” We recently did a very Englishwedding, with quail’s scotch eggcanapés, followed by a Ritz-styleafternoon tea then a bangers and mash

buffet in evening.” Get in touch with thedelightful team to discuss ideas andthemes for your budget. Premier Crewhave recently been nominated in the Eastof England category at the WeddingAwards 2012 a proud accolade. For a more informal gathering, which stillhas the ‘wow’ factor, a hog roast is alwayswelcome! Who can resist slow-roastedpork with crackling and apple sauce? TheFat Pig offers not only spitroast pig, but allkinds of BBQ, perfect for outdoor weddings, but also delicious as a winterwarmer. Toby Margetts and his team bringThe Fat Pig to you, and are so friendly andfun they’ll make any wedding breakfast orbuffet go off with a bang (and crackle!).“Eating casually and informally in the location grounds, or served on propercrockery in a more formal environmentaround tables, the ‘theatre’ of a turninghog roast is a great ice breaker at anyevent,” says Toby. “We arrive on siteapproximately seven hours before servingtime, ready to set up and start cooking ourpig – which takes approximately six hoursto cook from fresh,” he adds. “We thenserve the pork in a bap, along with freshlymade salads – of which we have a selection of 20 for the client to choosefrom, and some hot potatoes fried in herbsand butter. Nice ! We also arrange for devilishly creamy desserts to finish themeal off with a treat!”For some classic and stylish catering,Splinters Outside Catering, based inSudbury, have several impressive menus tochoose from and even customise for yourwedding day. The family-run business hasbeen creating gorgeous food for over 30years, and works closely with venues toproduce exclusive menus, or can offersomething from their jaw-dropping choiceof courses for a moveable wedding dayfeast. From Husbandto Wife

REAL We d d i n g

Vanessa Husband first met David Gordon at University, whenVanessa was a first year and David was in his second year. Davidplayed football with Vanessa’s housemate when the pair wasintroduced, though Vanessa was already in a relationship. “Wewere friends for a few months, but my relationship broke down, Imade the first move and we’ve been together ever since!” saysVanessa, now 28. After a few years of studying abroad, and forging the relationship across their time at UEA in Norwich,Vanessa’s home in Brentwood and David’s home in Richmond,Surrey the pair finally moved in together in 2008. “David proposedin the bath!” Vanessa laughs, after a romantic day at home. “It was very sweet,” Vanessa remembers.

Winter Wishes“I always wanted a winter wedding,” says Vanessa, “Winter 2009was too soon after we got engaged to plan for.” So the coupleprepared to marry on 18th December 2010, 18 months afterDavid had proposed. The couple chose Newland Hall, in Roxwell.“We looked around a few places, but this venue felt welcomingand the staff were lovely,” Vanessa says. The year-round permanent (and heated!) marquee was a big draw, as they had120 guests in mind. “There were lots of opportunities for photosaround the venue, too,” the couple remembers.

They chose photographer Gavin Woollard for his versatility, whowas enthused by the snow. “It hadn’t snowed at all before that day, and I was completelystressing that it’d snow the night before,” says Vanessa. “I wokeup to perfect winter day which was frosty and sunny. As wewent through the day the snow started to come down. It gotheavier and heavier and I thought: ‘Ah’.” Despite some of thewedding cars getting stuck at the venue and some people notmaking the wedding at all, Vanessa didn’t mind the snow at all. “It’s funny how little it actually mattered on the day,” she says.

Vanessa’s dress was simple and elegant, and showed off herpetite frame perfectly. “I knew I wasn’t looking for a meringuedress, but still wanted something dramatic,” Vanessa says. “Itried on a few styles and my mum’s reaction said it all- theywere all wrong!” Vanessa ended up with something totally different- a fishtail gown from Confetti and Lace at Lakeside.“The dress was very fitted, and I had off-the-shoulder strapsmade, knowing that strapless does not suit me at all.” Davidchose his suit, and those of his best man Chris and four ushers, from Anthony’s in Billericay. David didn’t want tails, so chose along jacket with a waistcoat and deep red cravat, which

matched the bridesmaid’s Pronuptia dresses. Dressing the venuewas a seasonal and handmade selection of snowy, sparklytwigs, with Christmas card table numbers, Place names werealso Christmas cards nestled in pine cones, bringing the glistening snowy day inside.

Spiritual DayDavid and Vanessa had a civil ceremony, stripped back to itsbare bones, followed by an inter-faith blessing. “I’m Catholicand David’s Jewish, so we wanted to combine elements of bothtraditions,” explains Vanessa. “We wanted to keep a religious, spiritual aspect to the day, andthis really felt like a real wedding ceremony.” The couple foundan inter-faith minister to perform the ceremony, but it didn’texactly go to plan. “[The minister] lost her voice on the day!”says Vanessa, “so our best man stepped in.” Having no idea ofthe chaos that was going on behind closed doors, Vanessa andDavid just carried on regardless, and say the inter-faith ceremony meant an awful lot to them. Throughout the wedding breakfast of beef bourguignon, magician Paul Clancy entertained the guests. “My dad is atoastmaster, so he recommended Paul Clancy; he was very, very good.” After apple pie for pudding, the guests danced untilmidnight, despite the snow. “Once we came out of the ceremony, the ground was thick with snow,” remembersVanessa. “If we had the wedding any later [than 1.30pm], halfthe guests would not have made it.” Continued overleaf...

Lasting Memories“The main thing I remember is the feelingof nerves that suddenly hit me,” saysVanessa. “I had to walk from the mainhouse to the ceremony in the marquee, through the thick snow and didn’t knowwhere these nerves came from!” However,

once she saw her groom, the nerves melted away and the couple grinnedthroughout the whole service. “All five ofmy bridesmaids meant an awful lot tome- though I thought I’d never have so

many bridesmaids,” Vanessa says.

On the wedding night, the couple stayedat Channels Lodge in Chelmsford before

flying off to Antigua on their honeymoon. Now the couple have become three, withthe birth of their baby boy in October. Sodoes it seem strange for Miss Husband tonow be a wife? “Now it seems strange ifI’m called by my previous name, I got usedto being Mrs Gordon very quickly!” And itsuits her down to a tee.

There is nothing that fullyprepares you for the fullterror of standing up infront of a roomful of people to make a speechon one of the most important days of your life.If you’re the groom, you’ve just got married tothe love of your life andwant to impress your newfamily. If you’re the fatherof the bride, you want to

tell everyone how wonderful your daughter isand how lucky the groomis to be marrying her. Ifyou’re the best man, youwant to tread the linebetween praising andhumiliating your closefriend, the groom.

As a veteran best man(three times so far), I knowjust how scary the thought

of making a speech canbe, but when it actuallycomes down to it, the reality is never as bad asthe expectation. The onething that helped me morethan anything was knowing what I was goingto say. It sounds simple buta lot of people go wrongwhen they try to wing it.

Made EEaassyy!!

If you’ve not thought about what you’re goingto say, what makes you think you’ll suddenly findinspiration in front of a hushed audience of 100or more?

Not that you should memorise what you’regoing to say or read it verbatim from a sheet.Mumbling in monotone whilst peering down atlengthy notes isn’t going to win anyone over. Ididn’t know any of my speeches word for word, but I did know what I wanted to say and had a

structure to my speech, so one point led toanother and I never had that terrible panickyfeeling of not knowing what I was going to saynext. Don’t get me wrong, it was still as dauntingproposition, but I felt comfortable enough that Iwouldn’t completely dry up and once you getyour first laugh or round of applause, you’ll feelyour confidence grow. And once it’s over youcan relax, have a drink and enjoy the rest of thenight.

1. Plan: Fail to prepare and you prepare to fail.

Have your wedding speech planned at least a

week before the big day

2. Practise: In the week before the wedding,

rehearse your speech. You’ll find out what parts of

it work best and what might need a bit of

tweaking plus it’ll make you comfortable with

what you’re saying and you’ll be less likely to dry

up.

3. Use cue cards and props – anything to help you

along and liven up the speech is good. This can

be especially useful for the best man. I’ve seen

Powerpoint presentations at weddings before, but

this may be going a little too far!

4. If you do use cards or a prepared speech,

don’t just stare down and read it out. Project your

golden words!

5. Remember, you’re among friends. They want to

like your speech and laugh at your jokes, so take

heart from that.

6. Don’t be too reverent (don’t do too much

creeping), don’t be too irreverent (don’t be

crude).

7. Remember the things you have to include as

part of your speech. For the groom, it’s praising

your new wife. For the father of the bride, it’s

praising your daughter and welcoming your

son-in-law to the family. For the best man, you’re

supposed to say how lovely the bride and

bridesmaids are and read out any messages from

those who can’t attend

8. Don’t go on too long. Some people’s

speeches ramble on and on. Don’t let this

happen. Don’t speak for more than five minutes.

9. As tempting as it might be, don’t have too

much to drink before your speech. A little Dutch

courage is no bad thing, but you don’t want to

be slurring your words, forgetting what you’re

going to say or dropping your cue cards!

10. Finish with a flourish. Try to end your speech in

style and aim for tears of joy rather than anguish

from the audience.

And remember to toast the happy couple!

Romanceon the Riviera

REAL We d d i n g

When Sara and John Hall married in June last year, they chose thebreath-taking Neapolitan Riviera for their stunning destination wedding

Police officer Sara Eastoe, 27, married her swimming pool builderbeau John Hall, 26, on 11th June, 2010, after a four yearcourtship. They met in 2006, when John worked in the warehouseattached to Sara’s offices. “He used to bring the post in everyday- I thought he was a bit of alright but wasn’t looking for a relationship as I was going travelling,” says Sara. After her friendsgot his number, she persuaded herself to text him and he invitedher over to his house for a curry! “After that we saw each otherevery day. I was impressed by his flash motorbike!”

They moved in together in January 2007, and he proposed atDanbury lakes in October 2008. “We didn’t want a traditional

English wedding,” Sara recalls, “John had been to a few andfound them boring. We wanted something different, and morepersonal.” The couple had initially considered a long haul destination, like Mexico or the Caribbean, but decided onEurope so that family and friends could travel there easily andcheaply. “We picked up the Kuoni weddings brochure andSorrento seemed like a nice location that was reasonablypriced,” says Sara. “I checked out the hotel and wedding service on Trip Advisor, and there were some really good reviewsfrom brides, so we went for it- 18 months after we got engaged.”The couple chose to marry on a Friday in the San Francescocloisters- a crumbling façade with plenty of photo opportunities.John’s best man Dan was a travel agent, so organised hotelrooms for the 30 guests and booked them a Kuoni wedding co-ordinator. Sara found a restaurant for the party of close family and friends to have the wedding breakfast herself.

“I looked up a couple of restaurants recommended by Sorrento brides onTrip Advisor, and found a perfect wedding package at O’ Parrucchiano.”The restaurant made their impressivelemon bombe wedding cake, and created a chic table setting set in thelemon grove terrace outside.

Sara chose her dress just as easily as shechose her wedding destination. “I wentto lots of wedding shops in Essex, andtried on loads of styles, but in the end Ifound something that was just what Ihad imagined.” Sara found her empireline, chiffon San Patrick dress at TheBespoke Wardrobe at their January sale, and the groom and best man foundtheir navy suits at a formalwear shopthat was closing down. The champagne-coloured bridesmaiddresses came from Lakeside- and wereperfect for the hot summer’s day thatawaited them in Sorrento. “Once we arrived in Sorrento, we had ameeting with the wedding rep who wasalso to act as translator for our ceremony. She sorted out bouquetsfrom a local florist and booked our carsfor us.” The couple had already sortedtheir paperwork at the travel agents inthe UK, so everything was ready forthem on the big day. “We barely had toplan anything,” Sara says.

After an early ceremony-11am- the couple stayed at the cloisters for anhour to take pictures, while it was opento the public. “I was glad it was early, asit was so hot that day,” remembersSara. The party then walked through thecobbled streets up to O’Parrucchiano, while the locals threw sweets andcheered and clapped...

It was like having amaster of ceremonies,” Sara laughs. “He lita sparkler that played music and put in itour wedding cake- we had to kiss until itwent out!” After a long lunch of Italianclassics, speeches and toasts, the partymade the most of the hotel and had aswim and dinner before bed.

A week later, John and Sara had a reception for family and friends at BentonHall Golf Club in Essex, with an eveningbuffet, disco and live singer for their firstdance- to ‘Secret Smile’ by Semisonic. This time, the bride and her two maids gotready at the Channels Lodge inChelmsford, before travelling to BentonHall in a 1940s hot rod. The couple

danced the night away before setting offChinese lanterns to celebrate their marriage.

Mr and Mrs Hall honeymooned six monthsafter the big day, after asking for travelvouchers for their wedding present. Theychose Kenya for their honeymoon destination: five days safari through theTsavo National Park, staying at variousgame lodges, followed by seven days all inclusive beach holidaying at the VoyagerBeach Resort in Mombasa. “My lasting memory is of the whole daybeing very laid back- there were no

nerves really,” Sara says, which suited hergroom down to a tee. “Marriage hasn’tchanged our relationship at all, whyshould it? We’re still the same people,”Sara says. “We would love to go back toSorrento and renew our vows on our tenthanniversary. We hardly planned a thing, but it went so smoothly, and it was abeautiful location.” For this Essex couple, marrying abroadmeant a small, intimate wedding in a stunning setting that they could combinewith a holiday. The nearby Amalfi coast isa must-see for Sorrento brides, and thecouple made the most of their Italianjaunt- not forgetting the friends and familyby throwing a party on their return. Itseems that for the Halls, Italy was just thejob.
