neW ScholarShip created for StudentS at parkerSburg high School The Vasan Family Scholarship for Academic
Excellence was created in February 2016 at the PACF to reward a graduating Parkersburg High School (PHS) senior for his/her academic excellence and exemplary achievements in academic activities. Additionally, it honors outstanding and dedicated Wood County School System educators. It is the Vasan family’s goal that this scholarship will serve as a model for the community to accept its responsibilities to foster educational growth and success in students, so their dreams may be realized.
This prestigious $10,000 scholarship will be awarded annually and may be split into two awards, should two graduating seniors be equally qualified for it. Additionally, the $10,000 scholarship includes a corresponding $1,000 teacher award. This award is given to a PHS teacher nominated by the scholarship recipient as the teacher who has most influenced his or her academic success. Should there be two student scholarship recipients, the corresponding teacher award is evenly divided.
MaryCatherine Bolton and Helen Read received the first Vasan Family Scholarships for Academic Excellence awards. Both students expressed their gratitude for the support of the teachers who have encouraged them on their journeys to academic distinction.
MaryCatherine Bolton nominated Lisa Berry for her outstanding influence in the field of Science. “Mrs. Berry shares her time well above and beyond her classroom,” said Bolton. “If she couldn’t be found in her classroom, she was found tutoring, organizing field trips, or even working the ticket booth at one of the many sporting events.”
Helen Read nominated Corrine Full for her expertise in the field of English. “I’ve never felt like much of an ‘English person,’ often refusing to see how people find some interpretations of literature,” said Read. “Having Mrs. Full for AP English in junior year completely changed my perspective. Though the class was challenging at times, I learned a lot and the class broadened my perspective.”

I was truly surprised and overjoyed when I heard my name announced as the Joe Barbarow Memorial Scholarship winner.
I’m sure Joe was a special person not only to his family, but to all of those who knew him. What a wonderful way to keep Joe’s spirit alive by giving to those in need of financial college assistance! I want to express my appreciation for this scholarship and am forever grateful to the Barbarow family.
I am excited to begin my studies in the Music Therapy Program at WVU. I also have been selected to the WVU cheer squad and look forward to cheering on the Mountaineers!

I am a Junior at Marietta College studying Public Accounting, and I can honestly say it has been the best decision for me.
Thank you to everyone who contributed to the Douglas E. Cochran Scholarship, as well as all the other scholarships given to students everywhere! There are many students who wish to attend college, but are unable to afford the great costs that come with it. Because of people like you who give such generous awards, these students (including myself) are able to get a quality post-secondary education.
I will forever be grateful for the generosity and support that the donors of this scholarship have given me.

bob Zide’S legacy of dedication to SportS liveS on
Robert “Bob” Zide was born February 13, 1935 in Marietta, Ohio, and lived most of his adult life in Williamstown, West Virginia, with his wife of 43 years, Anita, three children, Lori Williamson, Rodney Zide and John Zide. The Zide family is proud and humbled by the impact that their father made on athletics across the country, and particularly of his work toward improving player safety.
Mr. Zide held nine U.S. patents for athletic equipment, including one for the Shockblocker™ faceguard attachment, used by many NFL, college, and high school teams. The Ohio High School Football Coaches Association honored him for his lifelong efforts to improve the safety of young athletes. He was also instrumental in forming the Mid-Ohio Valley Sports Hall of Fame. And in 2014 he was inducted into the National Sporting Goods Association Sporting Goods Industry Hall of Fame.
His choice of a career in sporting goods was greatly influenced by his personal interests; playing high school varsity basketball for four years and during summers, while still working in the family’s business, he coordinated local YMCA basketball and softball leagues. Following college, Mr. Zide coordinated and officiated YMCA leagues, helped to establish local youth baseball leagues and played semi-pro baseball. Upon founding Zide’s Sport Shop in 1958, he turned his own passion for sports into a lifelong commitment to athletes and their teams and according to his family “loved every minute of it”.
After passing in 2003 at the age of 68, the Bob Zide Memorial Scholarship was established with the PACF by his family to provide two scholarships annually. One to a student from Washington or Noble counties in Ohio, and the other for a student from Ritchie, Wirt, Wood, Pleasants or Jackson counties in West Virginia. Since its establishment, the Scholarship has supported twenty-five local students and provided over $16,000 in tuition assistance.
“Dad appreciated the efforts of all student athletes, but he admired persistence and initiative even more so than skill, said Mrs. Williamson. “He really would have wanted to have rewarded the students who ‘went the extra mile’ in showing dedication to sports and who continuously sought to improve their skills. The student who gives his or her best 110% of the time – even if he or she isn’t the top athlete at school; the equipment manager who’s there for the team day in and day out and who takes care of everything so that the team can play well; the student who makes every practice, every time. That’s the level of personal commitment to athletics that dad would have wanted to see recognized.”

I am honored and appreciative of receiving the Hino Motors Scholarship once again. I am proud to be selected by a company that is in the manufacturing business here in West Virginia and recently celebrated its 50,000th truck produced in Williamstown. My current major is Industrial Engineering at WVU. I plan on receiving a degree and staying in this area.
By awarding me this scholarship, you have lessened my financial burden and allowed me to focus on my learning. I hope to renew this scholarship each year if funds are available.
Thank you very much for your financial assistance.

preServing a local nurSe’S care and compaSSion Catherine Diana “Cathy” Travis McClain graduated from Doddridge County High
School in 1971 and from Salem College, now Salem International University, in 1973 where she obtained her Associate Degree in Nursing. She was employed for 24 years by the Doddridge County Health Department as a public health nurse, and during that time had also served at the Doddridge County Senior Citizens as a nurse for 15 years. She enjoyed her job and was often overheard saying there was no place she would rather be than at work.
Mrs. McClain was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 2003. Even with months of clinical trails and chemotherapy, Mrs. McClain continued working and taking care of others. After four years of what appeared to be remission, Mrs. McClain’s ovarian cancer was discovered again, and it had spread to many of her other organs. Again, she underwent extensive surgery and months of chemotherapy. She continued to work, taking care of anyone and everyone who needed her, but now, at a little slower pace. Her determination to deal with the side effects of chemotherapy, to continue to work, and to fight this terminal illness was an inspiration to all who knew her.
“Through it all, Cathy always had a smile on her face and acted as if nothing was wrong,” said Debbie Davis, Mrs. McClain’s friend. “She refused to give up and fought to the day of her death. She would talk about how she had to get better and that all she wanted was to ‘be well enough to get back to work’. Cathy was a remarkable woman who will never be forgotten, but is sadly missed by all. In her final days, the idea of establishing a scholarship fund in her name was discussed with Mrs. McClain and she loved the idea and even decided that she wanted it to be named “The Cathy McClain Nursing Scholarship.”
Mrs. McClain passed in January 2008 after a courageous battle. The memorial scholarship was formed shortly after with support from Ms. Davis and the Doddridge County CEOs. The scholarship is part of the Foundation’s Doddridge County regional affiliate collection of funds. Since its inception, the scholarship has awarded over $8,000 in tuition assistance. The scholarship is designed to provide support to a student who is a resident of Doddridge County, who is a graduating senior or a previous graduate of Doddridge County High School and who intends to be full-time student attending a college or university in West Virginia.
Mrs. Cathy McClain’s legacy lives on through the Cathy McClain Nursing Scholarship.
