With over 21 million children and adults in the United States tainted with diabetes, it becomes dicult to

imagine any lifestyle untouched by the aects of this enduring and incurable disease. And while most of

us live untroubled by the direct inuences of this illness, those aected must adjust to a lifestyle which is

slightly more enduring. So I ask, what can be done to enhance the routine experiences of living withdiabetes?

As a fellow product designer, there is the possibility to enhance the experiences and lifestyles of those I

design for through the artifacts and services which I create. Therefore, a foreseeable product placement

exists in developing a system that enhances the lifestyle of those individuals directly associated with this

disease. By evaluating the current market and distinguishing opportunities for improvement we are able

to realize the true aspects which are important to those involved. The focus: make it easier for diabetes

patients to share, access, or translate medical information and seek to improve their way of healthy living.

In addition, developing a product which facilitates the needs of both patient and doctor, we can begin

taking a step in manifesting an alternative cure to living ecient with such an unreasonable and

intolerable illness.

Liva is and innovative insulin infusion system that simplies living with diabetes in a busy lifestyle. Liva

overcomes all the barriers presented by a conventional insulin pump. Liva was not only design the

outside shell (the proto semantic) but also it was carefully designed the interface and the medical service

too.

Livas rst approach was, how we can make the medical service better and faster, helping in the

communication system with the doctor, the family and the patient. So Liva oers patients a convenient

WEB service that allows connecting and providing daily information to the doctor and the family. The

way this medical service works is through the products used by the patient. First the insulin pump, willwork as a main controller to adjust the insulin level base on the info or request of the user as well will

check the glucose level and it will automatically save the data. Then there is the infusion set, which

deliver the insulin using a wired less and tubeless, making the patient more exible the move. Finally the

docking system, which will work as a personal hard drive that save all the data about the food that has

been consume, the glucose level, what kinds of food and how many carbs the patient has been consume,

and how many doses of insulin the user has been used. As well it will provide the charging of the battery,

works as an alarm clack and will provide the internet connection with the doctor, sending him the full

data of the patient. So all the info of the patient can be transfer to the doctor from the docking system to

the doctor through the web providing the patient and the doctor an easier check up by the web cam

communication. The WEB site will provide a dietary chart, connecting with the doctor, personal info,

family connection, webcam and chat room, and info to help the rst timer with diabetes. Also this webservice will benet the patient by: no more appointments which save time, gas and it is always accessible,

as well personal info is more organized, a family connection , and socializing (creating a community) to

learn new thing and interact with other with diabetes. The benets for the doctor will be an easy control

of the patient, easy access history records of the patient, fast and accurate connection with the patient,

time saving and no work place restriction.

HOW itworks

A day in a life

Every morning Brianwakes up when hisalarms ring.

then he checks theweather and time.

Brian takes the insulinpump controller andlooks his status ofblood level, insulin, andhis heart rate while hewas sleeping

it seems that every-thing is find and hesets up his basal rateand go takes a shower.

Brian then showed methat his infusion set wawater proof and it wafine to take a showewith the infusion set ohim.

His infusion set was notonly water proof aboutalso it was tubeless.

Before heading to hismath class he checksone more time hisglucose level.

He puts his insulinpump controller intohis backpack,

and had to class After class, he comeback for lunch.

Brian his a typical ordinary guy that goes to college

and he got the type 1 diabetes, but its ok because

now he has the new insulin pump called Liva.And heres how is daily life goes.....



HOW itworks A day in a life

Brian makes sure ifthere where vegetablesthat he can cook usingthe recipe that he canfind from his controller

Brian picks the foodand looks the nutritionfact that is label in theback of the food.

He then puts the carbinfo to his controllerand then he calculatethe about of insulin hehas to take after eatingthis food.

but he doesnt find anybecause his roommateshave eaten them.

After a long day Brian puts back his controller tothe docking system and goes back to sleep.

While he is a sleep the docking system takesall the information about this daily consume ofinsulin, food, carbs and info of his hearth andsaves it for his history records.

The next day Brianplugs in the docking

system and transfersthe data to the website and makes surehis data goes in to hischart and to his doctorinfo folder.

His communicate withhis parents got much

easier thank to the website specially designedfor liva and it users, andhis parents feels safebecause they also can

access to his historyrecord of his health.

After a month Brian has an appointment, butnow he doesnt have to go to the hospital forcheck ups, because he can just plug his dockingsystem to a computer screen and talk directlywith his doctor through the web site, who as allhis info of his daily life.

After eating some fooBrian and Drew startto play so ping pong,which since Brian wausing a tube lessinfusion set he feelcomfortable.



Livas interface provides and intuitive design for the patient which allows them to make choices faster and

more ecient. The patient can interact with the interface by touching the screen, which will help them to

obtain what they need faster and easier. Livas interface is consisting eight simple icons that provide all the

needs for the patient.
