IEA wants to help our colleagues gain confidence and provide support in theimplementation of the Illinois LearningStandards (also known as Common CoreState Standards). The IEA/Learning Stan-dards Initiative (LSI) will provide train-ing, resources and support through atrain-the-trainer model at our IEA regionoffices. Funding through an Organizing for Action grantfrom NEA, gives us the opportunity to support our mem-bers as they teach to the new Illinois Learning Standards.

LSI coordinator Annice Brave, an IEA board member andthe 2011 Illinois Teacher of the Year, is on loan from herteaching position at Alton High School. She is a memberof both the PARCC Educator Leader Cadre and the NEACommon Core Working Group and has extensive knowl-edge about implementing common core in the classroomas well as many, many helpful resources she will sharewith IEA members who agree to be leaders/trainers intheir schools.

Training will includesix modules:The how and why of Illinois Learning Standards;

Four modules on whatcommon core looks like in the classroom for Eng-lish Language Arts ele-mentary, ELA upper level,math elementary andmath upper level;

And, common core adaptations for specialpopulations.

We ask that you watch forfuture materials on LSI. Weare very excited to provide thisresource.

Opportunity: Through this NEA fundinggrant, IEA’s Center for Educational Inno-vation (CEI) will provide training, re-sources and support to IEA staff andmembers. Janet Tate, CEI instructionalresource and professional developmentdirector, will provide support for this pro-gram working closely with LSI CoordinatorAnnice Brave. Brave will provide a train-the-trainer modelworking collaboratively with IEA regional offices to alignthe Illinois Learning Standards.

Why should I become an LSI team member?The IEA LSI team has two goals:

Build teacher effectiveness in implementing the newIllinois Learning Standards and,

Make teachers’ work easier. Teachers’ inboxes arefilled with information about the standards. We willprovide a concise list of quality sources for teachers touse.

The IEA LSI team is here to help.By becoming an IEA LSI team trainer, you will have access to training and information to use in your building and your district.

This is your opportunity to develop your teacher lead-ership skills and take ownership of the Illinois LearningStandards. IEA will put you on the path to training yourcolleagues in using the best standards-aligned materialsand effective teaching techniques.
