The Writing Challenge
What was life like in Ancient Egypt?
Ancient Egypt has so many interesting areas to discover as archaeologists.
This week, let’s look at what life would have been like for the Ancient Egyptians.

Did you remember:1. Full stops and capital letters
2. Use of question marks (?), exclamation marks (!) and a comma (,)
3. Detailed descriptions using adventurous words and expanded noun phrases
4. Exciting writing to grip the reader
5. Careful editing checking for sense, spelling and punctuation
The Egyptian Adventure Imagine that you have been transported back to Ancient Egyptian times as a ruler or a servant. What do you have to do? What are your daily activities? What do you hear and see? How do you return back home?
How many adjectives can you use from the descriptive words provided? Make sure to plan your story first using a storyboard, then write your story in your workbook adding in more details.
Details to include:1. Who have you been mistaken for –
a ruler or a servant?
2. What are you wearing?
3. What sights, sounds and smells do you experience?
4. What are your thoughts and feelings?
5. How will you return back to your present day life?

Here is a possible way to start, using helpful adjectives from the word mat shown here.
Example:Slowly rubbing my eyes, I stumbled backwards to find myself staring at a colossal, golden pyramid in the distance. Confused, I shielded my eyes from the clouds of dust swirling around me, when I realised my clothing was different. Instead of my school uniform, I was wearing a plain, oversized beige dress and the soles of my feet were burning on the scorching, bone-dry ground.
I was standing in the middle of a field barefoot! Upon first glance, I noticed adults and children busy bustling around, smiling and chatting with one another, while harvesting bales of barley near a vast, flowing and abundant river.
Now that you are done writing your story, choose an artefact that you would have come across whilst you were transported back to Ancient Egypt.
An artefact is an object made by a human being, typically one of cultural or historical interest, for example pottery, sculptures and even a mummy’s sarcophagus.

The Maths Challenge continued
Remember: A fraction is when a whole is divided into equal parts.
This term we have been learning about the part and whole of different shapes, as well as the difference between equal and unequal parts.
This week, we will find unit fractions of a given quantity.
East Wickham Primary Academy | Homework Challenges | 08
Key Learning
Find fractions of a given quantity
Try this task:
Q: What is the difference between a wholeand a half?

Here are the key words for this lesson:
Quantity, fraction, whole, equal parts, multiplication and division.
Say the words aloud. How do these words relate to fractions?
New Learning:
There are 15 sweets. I give one third of them to my friend. How many does my friend have?
The whole is 15. The whole is divided into three equal groups.
Q: What multiplication fact is useful and why?A: 3 X 5 = 15
Q: What division fact is useful and why?A: 15 divided by 3 = 5

Have a look at this chart:
Q: What do you notice? What patterns do you see? A: You can use the inverse (multiplication) to solve the division.
Q: How do you calculate a unit fraction of a quantity?A: To find the unit fraction of an amount, divide the amount by the denominator.
For example, to find 1/2 of 12, divide 12 by 2.
Q: Find 1/3 of 15.A: Divide 15 by 3, which equals 5.

Now try this on your own. Just explain your thinking out loud:
To find 1/4 of 12, divide the 12 by the denominator, which is 4 in this problem (from 1/4).
12 divided by 4 = 3

Today’s independent tasks can be done verbally first – you can discuss your answers using the words fraction, denominator, multiplication, division and inverse.
Then, if you wish, write your answers in your workbook, showing how you solve the division and multiplication.

Done with the first task already? Try this one next.
Draw the problems into your workbook and solve them following the instructions for each.
