Another exciting yearSo far 2017 has been another exciting year and despite the economic challenges your Council has continued to try and improve the quality of life for all residents, creating new jobs and driving forward regeneration.

The Word, National Centre for the Written Word has just celebrated its first anniversary. Over the last 12 months the cultural space has welcomed almost 400,000 visitors, hosted two major exhibitions, held over 300 events and seen new library users increase by 176%.

The opening of The Word marked the completion of phase 1 of our ambitious South Shields 365 project. In 2017 we have made steady progress on phase 2, securing ownership of remaining assets in the town centre needed for the planned transport interchange which is scheduled to start on site next spring. In Jarrow the £3million improvement programme to Jarrow Hub has started on site and in Hebburn the recently upgraded Mountbatten Shopping Centre has now opened.

This year we introduced our Best Start in Life campaign. We want South Tyneside’s children and families to get the best start by remaining healthy and aspiring to enjoy a bright and prosperous future. To ensure everyone reaches their full potential, we will work together to provide the best possible learning opportunities, with targeted protection, care and support for those in greatest need.

We have already seen the Borough’s schools rank high nationally for overall performance and the Council’s adoption service named as one of the best performing in the country.

With further funding reductions for 2018/19 this is your chance to have your say. South Tyneside Council is working hard to protect local services despite a reduction in the money we have received from central government since 2010 by almost a half. Further funding reductions are expected so please take a few moments to complete the questionnaire within this newsletter and tell us the priorities that matter to you.

As we look ahead to the winter, we have another packed Christmas Wonderland programme scheduled including light switch-ons and the popular Camel Parade.

I’d like to thank all our partners and organisations that contribute to the production of this newsletter. This is the

last edition of 2017 so I’d like to take the opportunity to wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Councillor Iain Malcolm Leader of the Council

Tens of thousands of visitors travelled to the Borough this summer to enjoy our packed programme of events. South Tyneside has a strong reputation for delivering unmissable events and this year was no exception. The aim of the events programme is to not only provide our residents with a range of things to do and fun family days out but to also attract visitors into the Borough to generate millions of pounds to help our economy.

The South Tyneside Festival kicked off with our spectacular Once Upon a Time parade which included over 2000 participants from across the Borough as

well as professional performers. FA Vase winners, South Shields FC led the parade which included fabulous costumes, music and dancing. The Sunday Concerts saw the likes of KT Tunstall, Busted, Louisa Johnson, Sister Sledge and more take to the stage to entertain thousands at Bents Park. In addition the Festival also included live music in the Amphitheatre, children’s entertainment, Proms in the Park, Whitburn Festival, Hebburn Festival plus much more.

September was equally as busy with one of the world’s largest races returning to South Tyneside for the 37th year. Images

of the Borough were beamed around the world as nearly 2 million tuned in to cheer on those running the Simplyhealth Great North Run. Heritage Open Days also returned with a range of free inspirational walks, talks and tours at venues across South Tyneside.

We are now looking forward to Christmas Wonderland returning with the famous Camel Parade and a variety of other events. Turn to page 12 for our Guide to Christmas in South Tyneside or visit www.southtyneside.gov.uk/whatson for a full list of events.

FAbLAb in the communityFabLab@The Word has enjoyed a hugely successful first year with over 1000 people from the community using the state-of-the-art facilities including a 3D printer, laser and vinyl cutter!

The innovative facility, which is supported by BT, is one of just 10 such facilities across the UK and it is providing residents of the Borough with the chance to use the latest technology for a range of ideas.

Not only has FabLab allowed children, young people and adults the opportunity to experience the facilities on offer, but it has also found a place amongst business entrepreneurs and designers in South Tyneside as well as further afield.

FabLab remains relatively new to the Borough and a lot of residents are still unaware of what it can do. To encourage people to find out more, the facility hosts regular events which are open for anyone who has an interest in what FabLab has to offer.

On Saturday 2 December, between 10am-4pm, there is an opportunity to see FabLab in action and ask questions to our resident experts! Spectacular designs made by our users will be on show and you will have a unique chance to have some of our designs custom made for you to keep.

bringing designs to lifeLocal resident Kevin Flett, a retired designer, is using the facility to bring his CGI designs of South Shields in the 1960’s to life with the help of its cutting edge technology.

Mr Flett first visited FabLab on the opening day last October and is now a regular user of the facility using both the 3D printer and laser cutting machines to create scale models of his designs.

“I use old photographs of the town and then recreate them using CGI techniques and now, thanks to FabLab, I’m able to take these to the next level and bring them to life with full, 3D models.

“FabLab is essential to me. It really is a very valuable resource which has made it possible for me to bring my designs to life. It’s a fantastic service and I’d urge anyone and everyone to try it for themselves to see just how great it is!”

Work is now underway on the £3million revamp of Jarrow Hub that will see the current community centre in Cambrian Street transformed to create a multi-purpose leisure facility incorporating a new library. The gym, sports hall and theatre space will all be completely redesigned, whilst the dance studios, communal areas and changing facilities will be upgraded. The building will also get a new look with a visually attractive external façade and improved access at ground level. The affected areas closed to the public on 3 September to enable the

improvement works to begin and are expected to reopen late next year. The remaining parts of the building including the Mid-Tyne Activities Centre and Millennium PHAB Club continue to operate and can be booked by contacting Reception on 0191 489 4100.The modernisation project forms part of the Council's long-term vision for

community facilities in the Borough and will be managed and branded alongside the Borough's wider leisure offer. Residents are encouraged to make use of the Council’s five other leisure facilities for the duration of the works. Existing members should note that they can access these sites at no additional cost.

Pressing ahead with phase 2 of South Shields

www.southshields365.co.uk

Earlier this summer, the Secretary of State confirmed a Compulsory Purchase Order made by the Council, clearing the way for it to secure ownership of remaining assets in the town centre. Now the Council has acquired these interests, the planned transport interchange is on schedule to start on site next spring.

As part of this phase of the regeneration plan and to make way for the transport interchange, the Royal Mail Sorting Office has moved to its new facility at West Walpole Street in Laygate and the Post Office has opened its new branch on King Street.

In addition the coming months will see demolition work commence around the Barrington Street area. Behind the scenes key partners are progressing with the designs and the process of appointing a contractor is well underway.

The transport interchange will be owned and managed by Nexus upon completion. In addition to the main building there will be considerable public realm improvements in the Keppel Street area.

The Council has now acquired all the land and properties needed to press ahead with the next phase of the £100million South Shields 365 regeneration masterplan.

Construction of 35 new homes is now underway.

A sod cutting ceremony has marked the start of work on site at land around Eskdale Drive, on the Lakes Estate in Jarrow. The Borough’s independent housing company, South Tyneside Housing Ventures Trust, will work with Esh Property Services to deliver the scheme that includes a mix of two and three-bedroomed houses, two bedroomed bungalows and apartments with all properties benefiting from off-street parking and open plan front gardens.

South Tyneside Housing Ventures Trust Ltd is an independent, private, not-for-profit company which the Council and South Tyneside Homes helped to set up.The Trust was established to build high quality, affordable housing in the Borough for people aged over 55, families living with someone with a disability, plus new and refurbished family and starter homes.

The new properties are being built on the estate where non-traditional homes were demolished last year. The homes had been due to be refurbished as part of Decent Homes work but investigations revealed the condition of the properties to be far worse than first anticipated.

Residents who previously lived on Eskdale Drive have been given first refusal for the new properties. The project was awarded a £700,000 grant from the Homes and Communities Agency and construction is expected to take around 12 months.Graham Morgan, operations director at Esh Property Services, said: “The Esh Property Services team is pleased to be involved in the delivery of much needed new homes in Jarrow. “We look forward to building a new part of the community - both through construction and the creation of local jobs.“Esh Group is committed to developing skills through apprenticeships, and the Lakes Estate project will provide another opportunity to train new talent.”

The two-bedroomed properties will be available to the over 55s for affordable rent through South Tyneside Housing Ventures Trust. This is the first in a series of schemes that will be built by South Tyneside Homes' Property Services. The project received £80,000 in grant funding from the Homes and Communities Agency (HCA).

Marsden Village - Oral History projectFrom 1874 until the 1960s, Souter Lighthouse sat adjacent to the mining village of Marsden, created around Whitburn Colliery. The village totalled some 600 occupants, with shops, a chapel, church and school. The village declined with the colliery’s closure and all remaining inhabitants relocated to nearby Whitburn and the buildings demolished.

To capture first-hand accounts of life in this lost village, and of villagers' connections with the lighthouse community, Kate Devlin, Souter’s Lighthouse Steward, worked with volunteer oral historians to record and share Marsden memories. The results are currently displayed in Souter’s exhibition room.

East Coast War Channels projectThe National Trust received £9,900 from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) to explore north east links to East Coast War Channels - stretching from the Thames to the Tyne and beyond, protecting ships that carried vital supplies during the First World War. Off the north east coast, German U-boats attacked the cargo ships, fishing vessels and the small warships that defended them. Over a thousand ships were sunk and their wrecks lie on the seabed.

Lighthouse Steward Kate Devlin and the Souter team are working with marine archaeologist Antony Firth to look at the relationship between the East Coast War Channels and local communities. In summer 2017 a series of free public workshops revealed the stories behind the shipwrecks, their impact and lasting legacy. The project will include guided walks, a mobile exhibition, leaflets and online material.

Sport at SouterIn partnership with Sport England, the National Trust is developing an ‘active outdoors’ programme at Souter Lighthouse and The Leas. Anna Castiaux and Stephen Fortune joined the Souter team and created a ‘Summer of Sport’, including weekly free family activities every week where visitors tried sports such as archery, badminton, orienteering, rounders, tennis and volleyball.

September saw Souter’s first Great Run Local, free weekly 2km and 5km routes for all ages and abilities. A 3km Night Run event, in partnership with Cotswold Outdoor, will take place on 18 November. For details visit www.nationaltrust.org.uk/souter-lighthouse-and-the-leas

Sand Martin projectSouth Tyneside’s Coastal Conservation Group is working with National Trust rangers to build a sand martin nesting site in Whitburn Coastal Park.

Approximately sixty pairs of sand martins nest in tunnels in the cliffs around Whitburn and Marsden and long periods of heavy rain can cause nest tunnels to collapse.

Funded via the Local Environmental Action Fund (LEAF), the artificial nesting bank will provide sand martins with 128 holes for a safe, stable place to breed. Access from inside will allow nest monitoring and gathering of species data for the British Trust for Ornithology. The first birds are expected to arrive in spring 2018.

South Tyneside continues to rank among some of the top performing local authorities for school performance, with 93% of primary and secondary school children learning in schools judged by Ofsted to be either ‘good’ or ‘outstanding’. This has improved from 2010 when only 59% primary and 51% secondary school children attended ‘good’ or ‘outstanding’ schools. All of our special schools continue to be judged either ‘good’ or ‘outstanding’.

South Tyneside is home to the 2016 Times Educational Supplement’s Overall School of the Year and Early Years School of the Year, Boldon Outdoor Nursery, and the 2017 Times Educational Supplement’s Further Education Provider of the Year, South Tyneside College.

The Borough’s early years offer is also strong, with 100% of nurseries and non-domestic childcare rated ‘good’ or ‘outstanding’ by Ofsted. Take up of aged two years funded early education is at 91% of those eligible, the best performance in the country, meaning that more families are accessing the support they need to make sure their youngsters go far.

Thanks to the hard work and dedication of the talented school leaders, teachers and staff as well as parents and carers, young people in South Tyneside achieved excellent GCSE and A Level results.

The best in the UKAn innovative catering team at a Hebburn primary school was named the best in the UK in a prestigious awards scheme.

South Tyneside Council catering staff based at Toner Avenue Primary School were named this year's best primary school catering team in the UK and won a national Excellence Award from the Lead Association for Catering in Education (LACA).

The award was given in recognition of the team's efforts in delivering school dinners for more children as the school roll has increased 20% in recent years. The team has developed a new system to make sure everyone has plenty of time to enjoy their lunch and have more time to play outside.

With no additional budget available to improve facilities or storage space, kitchen staff developed new working and ordering processes and used work space more efficiently.

By staggering lunch breaks for older children, staff have not only ensured that all pupils can be served in a timely manner, but have also managed to reduce service time by a third.

Providing nutritious, balanced school dinners is just one of the ways in which the Council is determined to give our young people the best start in life. By choosing a school lunch, parents can be assured that their children are getting all the nutrients they need to maintain concentration for the rest of the school day.

Due to the commitment and innovation of the catering team, meal uptake at Toner Avenue is the highest it has ever been with students commenting that

the new service is much better because queues are shorter and service is faster.

Head teacher Mr Michael Arthur said: "The Toner Avenue kitchen team, in partnership with school leaders and with the support of South Tyneside Council, has delivered a major change to deliver a fast and efficient service.

"They have maintained their commitment to first class food quality and outstanding customer service and are an absolute asset to our school community."

In addition to the award and recognition, the school also received £500 prize money.

Organisations have come together to work on a new project that will help people with disabilities to stay safe on social media. The partnership involving the Council, Sunderland University, Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner, Keelman’s Way School, South Tyneside Ability FC and Your Voice Counts is working on producing an online safety resource to raise awareness of the issue of so called ‘mate crime’.

Steps taken to deliver the project• Members of the South Tyneside Ability

Football Club started by attending a course at Keelman’s Way School about social media and staying safe. They discussed what they use their phones and tablets for and what they liked and disliked about social media.

• After some research and discussion it became apparent that there was nothing or limited information available to advise adults with disabilities on how to safe online.

• Representatives from local charities, Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner, the Council and Sunderland University came together to discuss what resources should be made available.

• Media students from Sunderland University agreed to work with South Tyneside Ability FC to produce an online guide to staying safe on social media.

• Filming has commenced and the partnership is looking at ways to launch and roll out the online resource.

Raising awareness of ‘mate crime’

#WhoRYa

What is mate crime? This is something that can happen when someone ‘makes friends’ with a person with disabilities and then goes on to abuse or exploit that relationship.

The increase in the number of people with disabilities accessing social media means that this type of befriending to abuse is likely to happen more and whilst there are a number of resources designed to help keep children safe online there seems to be a gap in the market in terms of resources specifically for young adults with disabilities.

Managing our budgetHaving already made over £145million of savings since 2010 and with further significant Government cuts expected over the coming years, South Tyneside Council is working hard to protect local services.

Despite almost 50 percent reductions since 2010 in the money we receive from central government, we remain committed to our vision of South Tyneside being an outstanding place to live, invest and bring up families.

As we plan our finances for the future we will continue to consult with residents and elected members.

You said, we didLast year’s public consultation asked residents which services or areas should be a priority for the Council. With your endorsement we:

• Commenced work on our new transport interchange, part of the South Shields 365 capital investment to support new jobs and businesses

• Continued progress with the new International Advanced Manufacturing Park adjacent to the A19 through the acquisition of land and appointment of a developer

• Invested in a new integrated Health and Social Care facility to improve care for our elderly residents

• Continued our Borough-wide programme of improvements to pavements and footpaths.

Having thrown themselves into their year of office, the Mayor and Mayoress have met hundreds of people at various events and continue to raise money for the Mayor’s Charity appeal, which this year, is supporting CLIC Sargent and the British Heart Foundation South Tyneside.

Highlights of their first months include the traditional Mayor’s Sunday Parade, Armed Forces Day, the spectacular Once Upon a Time themed Summer Parade and celebrating a piece of the

Borough's shipbuilding heritage with the restoration of model warship HMS Pique.

In addition, they helped to launch the Great North Dog Walk and Health Information Week, strengthened relations with the Borough’s French Twin Town of Noisy-Le-Sec and joined local families at several community fun days.

The Mayor said: “We are both having a wonderful time representing our fantastic Borough and meeting so many people.

“It is a great honour to play such an important role in serving South Tyneside and when we get to go a little further afield, the Mayoress and I always seize the opportunity to talk about what a fabulous place the Borough is and its kind-hearted residents.

“The coming months are set to be just as exciting with an amazing line up of festive events and many more occasions where we can create fond memories to treasure forever.”

The Mayor and Mayoress of South Tyneside, Councillor Olive Punchion and Mrs Mary French, have enjoyed a busy summer of key events and civic engagements.

Last year the Council launched its Commemorative Blue Plaques scheme to recognise significant people and places which reflect historical and heritage value to the Borough.

There are currently twenty one plaques located across the Borough commemorating people and organisations such as John Simpson Kirkpatrick, ‘the man with the donkey’ who saved many lives though his selfless actions during World War One and South Shields Volunteer Life Brigade recognising the organisation’s important role in the last 150 years.

A ‘long list’ of nominations were received this year from groups such as local history groups as well as members of the public and three have been selected to receive plaques as a result of the first year of running the scheme. These include:

ReCOGNISING SOUTH TYNeSIDe’S PeOPLe AND PLACeS

Commemorative Plaques, commonly known as ‘Blue Plaques’ (even though they don’t have to be blue), recognise the importance of a person or building to the history and heritage of South Tyneside. To meet criteria:

contribution to the cultural, industrial or civic legacy of South Tyneside or Britain

• Have a strong link with South Tyneside e.g. born, lived or worked or made their discovery or accomplishment in South Tyneside.

• Have an existing, original site with strong links to them where a plaque be could installed. It would not be possible for example, to have a plaque saying ‘This is the site of the house where Catherine Cookson lived’ (the house no longer stands).

A building or structure must be prominent in the history and development of South Tyneside and should demonstrate:• Evidential value• Historical value• Aesthetic value• Communal value

Last year there were fewer anti-social behaviour incidents during our Darker Night’s Campaign than previous years! We know anti-social behaviour is a concern for residents in the Borough and police along with partner agencies are working hard to make sure we do something about the issue and this will continue during the darker nights.

Police and Fire Officers will be carrying out joint patrols throughout the area. If you’re concerned please stop and speak to them – they’re there to help you and offer you support. Neighbourhood Officers from South Tyneside Homes will be going on a number of walkabouts during the day to talk to residents about fly-tipping, littering and graffiti concerns.

Only by working together can we make a real difference to your neighbourhood in reducing local crime and the fear of crime and getting something done about vandalism and graffiti.

Men working to end violenCe AgAinSt woMenThe White Ribbon Campaign is an international campaign, led by men, working to end men's violence against women.

One in 4 women are subjected to some kind of violence or abuse at the hands of men during their lifetime, whether it is physical, mental or sexual. These actions have a lasting and devastating impact on women's lives, and that of the people around them.

While there are many excellent women's organisations committed to helping victims of violence and preventing future violence, the White Ribbon Campaign also believes that as men we also have a responsibility to stand up and condemn the violence of a small proportion of our peers.

Every year, White Ribbon Day takes place on 25 November, which is also the United Nations’ International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women.

South Tyneside’s Community Safety Partnership promotes the campaign locally and encourages the local community to get involved and support the campaign.

if in doubt, keep it out! Glass jars and bottles, cardboard packaging, plastic bottles and trays, cartons, empty aerosols and small electrical appliances can all be recycled in the main part of your blue recycling bin. Rinse any food or drink remains from materials before placing in the bin. One item placed in the recycling bin with food remains can contaminate the whole truckload of recyclables, this means that the recycling from you and your neighbours is rejected and can’t be recycled.

Do not place any food in your blue recycling bin including takeaway boxes or trays. No plastic bags of any kind can be recycled so don’t use plastic bags to separate recyclable materials.

The inner caddy can recycle newspapers, letters, junk mail, envelopes (not padded), magazines, catalogues, paper and plain cards. If you have a Christmas card or a Christmas tag with glitter, glue or foil then use your grey household bin to dispose of it. Cards with glitter on cannot be recycled and will contaminate all recyclable materials. Make sure wrapping paper is placed in your grey household bin and not your blue recycling bin.

Local people who are eligible for the flu vaccine are being reminded to protect themselves with a free vaccination which saves lives. Last year South Tyneside saw 1,055 people clinically diagnosed with flu, nearly double the previous year.

The Council is supporting the winter flu campaign as part of Stay Well This Winter which is encouraging those who are eligible for the free flu vaccination to take up the offer. Those who have long-term health conditions, particularly respiratory diseases such as Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease or bronchitis, and those who are pregnant are at greater risk of developing complications as a result of flu.

The campaign is also aimed at parents of children aged 2-4 who will receive the vaccination from their GP. This is to protect them against flu and help to reduce it spread to those around them.

Tom Hall, South Tyneside’s Director of Public Health, said: “Flu is a highly infectious disease with symptoms that come on very suddenly. People that are healthy usually recover in two to seven days but for some the flu can mean a stay in hospital, permanent disability or even death.

“Those considered most at risk and in need of the vaccine, include pregnant women who can suffer from serious complications such as pneumonia, miscarriage or having a baby too soon as a result of flu.

“People who have a long-term health condition such as asthma, even one that is well managed, are also at increased risk of complications as a result of flu.”

If you consider yourself to be part of an 'at risk' group get in contact with your local GP and get the free seasonal jab.

PROTeCTING PRIMARY SCHOOLCHILDReNA programme to protect South Tyneside’s primary schoolchildren from flu began in October. All children in Year 1-6 will receive the vaccine, including special schools. Children who are in a clinical at-risk group will be required to visit their GP to have the vaccine. Children aged 2, 3 and 4 will be vaccinated at their GP practice.

The Stay Well This Winter campaign can help you and your family prepare for winter including how to protect yourself from flu. Visit www.nhs.uk/staywell for more information.

Local people in the Borough are being encouraged to take part in Alcohol Awareness Week - an opportunity to get people thinking and talking about their relationship with alcohol. This year the theme of the week is alcohol and families. Often when a person misuses alcohol this impacts on their family and friends. The Council is backing the week which is helping people to have honest conversations about the impact of alcohol misuse on individuals and their families and to help those who need it to find support.

Alcohol Awareness Week is run by Alcohol Concern, which has recently merged with Alcohol Research UK, and Adfam. This year the campaign will feature information, case studies and resources throughout the week on Facebook and Twitter. You can get involved using the hashtag #AAW2017.

DiD you know:

• Regularly drinking up to a pint of lager, beer or a glass of wine a day can increase the risk of cancers of the mouth, throat and breast

• Every year alcohol causes 12,800 new cases of cancer in the UK

• Taking more days off alcohol can help you reduce your risks, as well as save money and lose weight

• Research shows young people who start drinking at an early age drink more, and more frequently, than those who delay their first alcoholic drink, and are more likely to have problems with alcohol later in life

Balance, the North East Alcohol Office, is also backing Alcohol Awareness Week. Visit the reducemyrisk.tv website to download free tools to help cut down your drinking and understand units better, or search for Alcohol Awareness Week online.

In addition, Balance will be working with partners in South Tyneside and across the North East, to promote the Dry January campaign, which challenges people to abstain from alcohol throughout January and to start the New Year with a fresh, healthy approach.

If you are concerned about how much you, or someone you know drinks, there is lots of help available. For tips on cutting back on alcohol go to www.change4lifesouthtyneside.co.uk or telephone 0191 424 7300, you can also speak to your GP, find your local alcohol support service or contact Drinkline Freephone on 0300 123 1110 or Alcoholics Anonymous on 0845 769 7555.

exPeRT RePORT SAYS THeRe’S NeVeR beeN A beTTeR TIMe TO STOP SMOKING Families and friends across the Borough have supported each other with their quit challenge as part of Stoptober.

New data recently published shows quitting success rates are at their highest for at least a decade. The report by the University College of London (UCL) shows quitting rates were up to 19.8% for the first six months of this year, significantly higher than the average for the last 10 years (15.7%).

The report coincided with the launch of the Stoptober quit smoking challenge.

Laraine McLoskey from South Shields, quit smoking after a heart attack in March 2017 completely changed her life.

“I was a smoker for 40 years, 20 a day typically,” said Laraine, Head of Operations at South Tyneside Training and Enterprise Network. “I had been suffering from chest pains for a while but put it down to indigestion and didn’t think too much about it.

“Over time the pains got increasingly worse and in March this year, I suffered a heart attack and had to undergo surgery to insert a stent. That moment was the biggest turning point for me.

“There isn’t much better an incentive to quit smoking than having a heart attack. Not everyone recovers from, or even survives, such a serious condition. “It helped me to quit smoking having some assistance from e-cigarettes. I’m on medication for life but I feel so lucky to be here today.“Since quitting I’ve encouraged other members of my family to join me too, including my sister and my daughter. Since I stopped smoking, I’ve saved lots of money too. As a family, we’ve enjoyed three holidays to Gran Canaria, Majorca and Corfu, and I just want to make the most of every second." Laraine’s employer recently gained the Better Health at Work award through running campaigns and has just been awarded the Change4Life quality standard.

Called ‘The Path to Excellence’, the 14-and-a-half week public consultation formed part of a programme led by a partnership of local NHS organisations including NHS South Tyneside CCG, NHS Sunderland CCG, South Tyneside NHS Foundation Trust and City Hospitals Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust – working together as the South Tyneside and Sunderland NHS Partnership. The proposals focused particularly on improving areas of hospital care which are delivered at South Tyneside District Hospital and Sunderland Royal Hospital including: • stroke services, specifically hospital

(acute) care and hospital-based rehabilitation services

• maternity services (obstetrics), covering hospital-based birthing facilities i.e. where you would give birth to your baby and special care baby units and women’s services (gynaecology), covering inpatient surgery where you would need an overnight hospital stay

• children and young people’s (paediatrics, urgent and emergency) services

The potential changes have been developed to provide the highest quality of care to patients while getting the best out of NHS staff, facilities and resources.

During the consultation local NHS clinical leaders explained the challenges around the way some services are currently being delivered, the different ways local doctors, nurses and hospital-based therapy staff think these services could be provided both now and in the future, and listened to public feedback about these different proposals.

Public feedback will be analysed into themes and publicly reported to ensure it influences the final decisions which will be made by the two NHS clinical commissioning groups early in 2018.

Any future changes to the way services are organised would only be made in order to improve the quality and safety of those services, make the best of our staff, as well as making the best use of public money and meet the needs of our population both now and in the future.

How to get involved:There are a number of ways you can keep involved and receive updates on future public meetings. All information about the different ways to be involved is hosted on our website www.pathtoexcellence.org

GP extended accessNHS South Tyneside Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) is investing an extra £860,000 per year in local services which includes increased access to GP appointments during early evenings and weekends.

Since 1 September, South Tyneside residents have had extended access to GP appointments, with an additional 312 appointments a week, during early evenings and weekends.

The extended access aims to make it easier for many patients who find it hard to get an appointment during the day, especially if they are self-employed or their shift pattern makes it difficult to get away from the workplace.

This service will be provided by South Tyneside Health Collaboration - formed from 17 GP practices in South Tyneside - and will work with all 22 practices in the area to make sure that patients are able to book appointments.

Appointments are available between 7am and 8am and 6.30pm and 8pm weekdays and 10am till 2pm on Saturdays and 10am till 1pm on Sundays.

There will be three hours of appointments on each Bank Holiday, between 10am and 1pm including Christmas, Boxing Day, Good Friday and Easter Monday.

To book an appointment outside of your practice's normal opening hours simply call your practice in the usual way.

Appointments during normal working hours will not be affected in any way.

Be prepared for winterWinter can bring all sorts of seasonal bugs and illnesses, including coughs and colds, sickness and upset stomachs. Although these are pretty unpleasant, they usually clear up within a few days to a week and there’s no need to visit your GP.You can get quick, expert advice from your local pharmacist, who can tell you the best medicines or treatment to use.At home, try to keep a good supply of over-the-counter medicines, such as paracetamol, ibuprofen and rehydration salts, to help manage symptoms while you recover. If your child is poorly with a cold, sore throat or poorly tummy, use the downloadable NHS child health app to check their symptoms and the best treatment. If you’re over 65, have a long term health condition like asthma or diabetes, or are pregnant, make sure to get your flu vaccine. Flu can cause severe illness so it’s important to book an appointment with your GP practice or pharmacy as soon as you can.
