Hello! I am Tomochichi.

When I was 90 years old, I decided to build a new town on the Savannah River. We called ourselves the Yamacraws. I later became the mico of the village, because I was honest.

To welcome the settlers, I gave Oglethorpe a gift. It was a bison hide with an eagle painted on it and an eagle feather.

The eagle feather stood for peace.

For the rest of my life I made sure that there was peace between the settlers, the Creek, and the Yamacraw. We all learned many things from each other.

Because of our friendships, the growing colony of Georgia stayed a peaceful place.

Click on PictureKeeping track of time was very important to the Yamacraw tribe. We needed to always know how many hours of sunlight we had.

We grew our own crops for food, so we needed sunlight to work in the fields.

The hunters needed to know how many hours of sunlight they had to hunt for food.

How did we tell time before we had clocks?

Click on the TelevisionHistory Of The ClockLets Do Some Math

Click on the PictureThe Yamacraw tribe used the sun to tell time.

They would watch shadows made by the light from the sun. Like the shadows made by trees or other objects on earth.

Look at the trees shadow!!

Imagine your day without clocks and calendars. See the sun peeking through your windows? Its time to get up. Notice the sky darkening? Almost time for bed. This is how people once livedwithout knowing the time or the day.

Write about how your day would be without clocks!!

When you have finished discuss the type of day you would have with your table.

In your scrapbook you will write a letter to someone in the future. In your letter you will explain to them how to tell time by using the sun and making a sundial.

Each letter will include the following:Directions to making a sundialExplaining how a shadow is formedExplaining why shadows change positionsAnd how all of these can be used to tell time without having a clock.
