Adobe Photoshop Repositioning Marquees

If you start to make a Rectangular Marquee tool (M) selection anddiscover that you don’t have the selection positioned where you want it, don’tstart over.Before you finish creating the Marquee, press and hold the Spacebar, repositionthe selection, and then finish making the selection. This trick also works with theCrop tool and the Shape tools.

A Photoshop technique to increase the local contrast in an image.

1. Open your image in Photoshop.2. Make a duplicate layer of your image. It will appear on top of the original.3. Select Hard light as the blending mode for the dupe layer.4. Choose from the filter menu "Other" then "High pass". Try 5 pixels firstand adjust as needed for your image.5. Reduce the opacity of the dupe layer to 75 percent but adjust this as needed.6. Desaturate the dupe layer of all color, this will avoid color shift.7. Click the dupe layer icon off and on to inspect the image, when youâ• ™resatisfied with the effect, merge the two layers.

The image will have enhanced local contrast and also appear to be sharper.Flat colors will also have more tones.

1. Copy the image as a new layer and drag the new layer below the Original.2. Apply a modest 3 pixel median to the new layer.3. Set the mode of the original layer (above the medianed layer) to 'Screen'.

This tip works well for very 'grainy' images that have fairly good detail.

Spring is not too far away now ( almost exactly one month) andas I sit here and finish this edition of the Focal Point waiting forsnow to fall, I think about the meaning of spring.

By definition.............

Spring is the first season of the year in North America, compris-ing March, April and May, following winter and preceedingsummer. It is the time beginning after the vernal equinox approx-imately on March 21, when the sun crosses the equator and dayand night are of equal length all over the world, and lasting untilthe summer solstice, when the sun is at it’s greatest distancefrom from the celestial equator, reaching the northernmost pointon June 21.

It is the time when LIGHT causes the earth’s plants, to “Spring”from their winter sleep in our parts of the woods, and along withthe increased light and warmth of the sun, nature provides uswith photographic opportunities in yet another glorious season.

The beginnings of the tulips have already broken ground hereand the tips of their green leaves are rising higher every day.

I am constantly amazed by the resilience of plants that go dor-mant in winter and SPRING to life when the sun changes in theheavens, bursting forth with beauty and wonder.

The flowers on the cover of this news letter are some of thefinest spring has to offer. The earliest to break ground andbloom, the Hellebore, is a European herb with showy flowers,popularly called “The Christmas Rose.” The sharp blade likeleaves of the Iris are not too far behind the Hellebore. The Pe-ony is an all time favorite and begins it’s rise as the Iris are be-ginning to fail. The ever popular day lilly follows after the Peonyhas past their bloom and takes us into summer. I can not count orname the many other beautiful flowers to SPRING forth, but onething I can say is that SPRING is the time to get out and getsome great shots. But hurry as SPRING can be fleeting in ourtown with the drenching rains, late frost or early heat so whenyou see some flowers blooming, don’t wait! Grab that cameraSPRING from your photographic sleep and get your best shot ofSPRING, before it is gone.

If you wait, you will have to wait another year for the samebeauties to be seen again!

I am having a one person photography exhibition,March 2 – 27, 2005 at the Gallery, Community CulturalCenter, Cecil Community College, One SeahawkDrive, North East, MD 21901.

The opening reception is from 5:30 – 7:30 PM March2, 2005. I will give an “artist’s talk” around 6:30PM.

The Exhibit title is: Love of the Eye, Vision of theHeart. There will be approximately 50 photos in theshow, mostly black and white wet prints.
