Just a little note from your Potentate....
This summer’s “FUN IN 2021” started with TSA in sunny San Antonio, Texas. Our units that participated had a great time. Our clowns were funny, our brewers had the right “red eye”, our Provost Guard had some “hot pistols” and the shot guns were “dead on.” Our Directors Staff Band did a great job playing in the “never ending” parade. July brought us to the 2021 Imperial Session in rainy Houston, Texas. Lots of fun with people from all over the world. Thanks to David and Jeanne Sims we had one of the best hospitality rooms anywhere.
What a great job! Thanks for those that helped out. Out of 56 teams competing in the International Corn Hole Tournament, Hella Shrine had two teams that almost took it all. Our High Priest and Prophet, Steve Lang, and his partner Jim Wells, came in 4th. They were beaten by the team that took the championship. Your Potentate, Mike Hall, and his partner, Kevin Finnell, came in 5th. We were beaten by the team that was runner up in the championship. What a great time. Imperial Jim Smith and First Lady Alice had plenty for us to do besides be in session all day. We had a street dance with vendors and games. The Bellamy Brothers put on a tremendous concert, and the rain held off, to once again let us get the parade in the record books on Tuesday evening. First Lady Dianne and I want to thank everyone that participated at TSA and Imperial. We appreciate the effort it took to make these events a success. Fraternally,Mike HallHella Temple Potentate
August Greetings from First Lady Dianne! Hello all! Summer is in full swing! Most of this great United States has opened up and people are going and doing things that they haven’t been able to do in well over a year. We still need to keep vigilant and stay safe, but get out and enjoy! The Kids Fest in Texarkana, Texas, June 19th, at the Elks Club, was a huge success. The audience enjoyed the show and many kids got to take home gifts. I know this big kid, ME, enjoyed the show immensely. Chief Rabban, Nick Fehrenbach, and his Lady Laurie did an outstanding job. The 147th Shriners Imperial Session, July 4 - 8, 2021, in Houston, TX, is a wrap. A great time was had by all who attended and Hella was well represented. It was so good to see so many that we haven’t seen in a while and to be able to give them hugs and handshakes was AWESOME! The outgoing Imperial Sir, Jim Smith and Lady Alice, did a fantastic job of representing Shriners Imperial for 2020-2021 even though it was a challenging year for them. The newly installed Imperial Sir, Bill Bailey and Lady Debby, will do an awesome job in 2021-2022. Congratulations to them and hats off to all! The Hella 7th Shrine Classic was Saturday, July 31, 2021, at the Super Bowl Speedway in Greenville, TX…just down I-30 from Hella. Everyone enjoyed spending time with good friends and all the different races that help the kids. Noble Ricky Randall has done another outstanding job in getting this race up and going. The next Hella Stated Meeting will be Thursday, September 16, 2021, and back by popular demand, my program will be “shop the night away.” It was a huge success in October 2020, so here’s hoping September 2021 will be even better. Numerous vendors have been invited so I know there will be something for everyone. Have a great time the rest of the summer and stay safe. See you all soon.

Chief Rabban Your Divan recently attended the Imperial Session of Shriners International in Houston, Texas. There were still minor COVID-19 protocols in place, but it was good to gather with Shriners from around the world. With the shutdown the prior year and the restrictions on gatherings, I had forgotten what it was like to gather with my brothers and enjoy the fellowship of the Shrine. The old adage that you don’t realize what you have until it is taken away is true. Although the meetings were long and the discussions sometimes intense, the fellowship of my fellow Shriners more than made up for the long days.
In talking with Nobles from other states and other countries, I realized how lucky we are to live in Texas. Many of them had not been able to meet in person since February of 2020. Many of them are still required to wear masks and socially distance anytime they leave their house. They were so grateful to be in Texas where restrictions have relaxed, and we can choose to gather and enjoy the fun and fellowship of the Shrine. Regardless of your personal opinion on the shutdown, and restrictions on in-person meetings, at least in Texas, the Shrine was able to decide for ourselves if we would have meetings. We had to cancel some meetings and events and not have meals at others, but we were able to gather and continue the work of the Shrine and enjoy the fun and fellowship. I know some of you chose not to attend meetings and I respect that choice. But for those that felt comfortable venturing out in public, we were able to have meetings and promote fellowship. Some of our members thought we should have canceled more of our meet-ings out of an abundance of caution and some of our members were angered that we had to cancel any of our meetings and events. Your Divan had to weigh the risks to our membership and the need to conduct our business along with the desire of our members to gather again as Shriners and Masons. These were not responsibilities we took lightly. Talking with Nobles from around the world, many of them did not have to make those decisions for their Shrine. Be-cause of where they were located, the government made those decisions for them and prevented them from gathering. The Im-perial Session in Houston was their first opportunity to meet face to face with other Shriners in 18 months. They were grateful to be able to gather in Houston and their joy was infectious. It helped me to appreciate what we have. Although the pandemic is not over and we still need to be cautious, I encourage you to come out to the Shrine and en-joy the fun and fellowship. If you want to wear a mask and socially distance, that is fine, and no one will give you grief. The main thing is to come out and socialize with our fellow Nobles and their Ladies. You may not even realize how much you have missed the fun and fellowship. We don’t have a Stated Meeting this month, but there are Unit and Club meetings coming up and the Garland Labor Day Parade is just around the corner. Please come out and see what is going on at the Shrine and once again enjoy the fun and fellowship upon which our fraternity is founded. Nick Fehrenbach, Chief Rabban

We continue to encourage each of you to be safe, and hopefully the Covid THING is history!
Upcoming Meetings and Events:
§ Full Ceremonial is scheduled for October 23, 2021. Registration is at 8:00 am, Ceremonial to begin at 9:00 am.§ All Units, Clubs and Daughters of the Nile are encouraged to attend, and be prepared to represent your activity and welcome our new Nobles and their Ladies!§ Membership Meeting will reconvene on August 25, 2021, to discuss possible candidates for the October 23rd (Fall) Ceremonial. Watch the Camels Calf for updates on Membership activity.
The plan is still to visit as many lodges as possible, encouraging all Master Masons to become Nobles of the Shrine, by enlightening them of our activities and Fun and Fellowship that awaits them and their families! Hella needs your help, please get involved at your Blue Lodges and visitation at others when possible. I have peti-tions, available upon request (via email).
If you need a list of those lodges within a 40-mile radius of the Temple, let me know, I’ll send an email ASAP.
We need your assistance! I’ll speak to the overall plan during our Membership meetings… please come and participate! We’ll need to begin assembly of the Ceremonial Team as well as the ARCH presentation team.
All Nobles must continue to exhibit an Ambassador role when communicating our purpose and activities to all Master Masons within the appendage bodies that we attend. This is VERY important!
We are HELLA, and we serve the greatest purpose in support of our Shriners Children’s Hospital and your Temple.
Please stand up and be counted when called upon to lead or participate.

High Priest and ProphetGreetings Nobles and Ladies! It was a pleasure to get to attend my first Imperial Session, and I was honored to do that as a member of the Hella Divan. Houston was....well....it was Houston! LOL! But I will say that the downtown area we were in was really cool! Dee and I had a great time at our first Imperial and learned alot too. I got to spend time with alot of other Divan members from all over the US. I got a lot of fresh ideas on how to get the Nobility more involved, and how to spread out the responsibilities and tasks we need to do to bring back the comradery and fun to what we do for the hospitals and our kids!
We need to develop new units that can help us draw in the younger Master Masons, their Ladies and their families. I would challenge anyone that reads this article to email me ONE idea for a new unit that you think would be popular among the 30-45 year old demographic. Email it to [email protected]. I would love to get a bunch of fresh new ideas on units to look at starting for the younger Nobles. They will be the next generation of leadership for Hella. Let’s see how many new units we can have at the fall Ceremonial on October 23rd. We have one more month of being “dark” before we get back to a regular schedule in September. We have some great events coming up though, so be on the watch and check the Temple calendar to stay in touch. The Clowns had a Family Day 7/23, we had the Hella Classic in Greenville on 7/31, and we have a Temple Party coming up on 8/14, and we have the Labor Day Parade in Garland on 9/6. Invite your family, friends and even co-workers to one of these events and let them see what we do for the kids and why we are Shriners. I’ll leave you with a quote..... “The price of success is hard work, dedication to the job at hand, and the determina-tion that whether we win or lose, we have applied the best of ourselves to the task at hand.”......Vince Lombardi Success..is the feeling we get when we see the kids our hospitals have helped. We get that feeling because we do the hard work, we’re dedicated to what we do, and we are determined to do good for our kids. Doing all this is how we apply our talents to the task at hand. I love being a Shriner, and I love Hella and my brothers and their ladies. I don’t want us to EVER lose that feeling!

Oriental Guide Hello all Nobles and Ladies First of all thank you to all the Nobility for electing me to the office of Oriental Guide in May. Since May, my lady, Sheila, and I have had the opportunity to visit only a few Units and Shrine Clubs. My plan extending over the next several weeks is to meet with as many of the Units and Clubs possible. Shortly after being elected we had the opportunity to travel to TSA held in San An-tonio this year. At TSA I was able to watch some of the competitions and participate in
the meetings. During the meetings all the Oriental Guides from all over the state are put through an “initiation” where our introduction skills are put to the test. After TSA we traveled to Houston for our Imperial Session. Where I learned many things. No initiation here, I did meet people from many different places. From the Treasurer’s Chest I trust everyone is having a fabulous Summer! Your Divan members have been busy bees as we attended the Texas Shrine Association Meeting in June in San Antonio and in Houston for Imperial the first week of July. Although we have been Dark for the Summer months, your Divan members are still meeting at our Financial/Divan business meetings. The business of Hella never stops. Good news to all. We are starting to make a profit with our rentals picking up as we knew it would. We’re not out of the Covid woods yet, but getting there. Lots of new prospects are on the horizon with the expectation to make budget this year. Needless to
say, but I’ll say it anyway, we will not be asking the Nobility to draw out of the reserve accounts. With the efforts of our Recorder, PP Wayne Osborn, we are at our leanest in terms of costs to run the Temple than we have been in years. Additional work is still needed and when you come back to regular stated meeting in September, you’ll see the work already accomplished by our Directors’ Staff. This past summer, I posted Hella’s financial situation outside of the ballroom. I will continue that posting and look forward to presenting on a big screen during our meetings. For September, I will also post, for your review, the financials of Imperial. Let’s have fun in 2021!! Summer is not over yet. And September will be here before we know it. Until then, stay healthy, stay safe, complete that bikini tan and….always, remain Shriner Strong!!

Suggested Blue Lodge Program Shriners International, also commonly known as The Shriners or formerly known as the Ancient Arabic Order of the Nobles of the Mystic Shrine, (AAONMS) is a Masonic society established in 1870 and is headquartered in Tampa, Florida. Shriners International describes itself as a fraternity based on fun, fellowship, and the Masonic principles of brotherly love, relief, and truth.
In The Beginning… In 1870 a group of Masons gathered frequently for lunch in New York City. Among the regulars were Walter M. Fleming, M.D. and William J. “Billy” Florence, an actor. The group frequently talked about starting a new fraternity for Masons – one centered on fun and fellowship, more than ritual. Fleming and Florence took this idea seriously enough to do some-thing about it. Billy Florence had been on tour in France, and had been invited to a party given by an Arabian diplomat. The exotic style, flavors and music of the Arabian-themed party inspired him to suggest this as a theme for the new fraternity. Walter Fleming, a de-voted fraternity brother, built on Florence’s ideas and used his knowledge of fraternal ritual to transform the Arabian theme into the Ancient Arabic Order of the Nobles of the Mystic Shrine (A.A.O.N.M.S.). By June 1922 the cornerstone had been laid for the first Shriners Hospitals for Children® in Shreveport, La. The first patient to be admitted in 1922 was a little girl with a clubfoot, who had learned to walk on the top of her foot rather than the sole. In 1926 the Hella Shrine Hospital for Crippled Children in Dallas, Texas, became the Scottish Rite Children’s Hospital and the oversight and support was assumed by the Scottish Rite Bodies. Never does a Shriner stand so tall as when he stoops to help a child. Through the remarkable foresight, commitment and fundraising skills of the Shriners International (Headquarters in Tampa) nearly one million children have been treated at one of the 21 Shriners Hospitals for Children across the United States, and in Canada and Mexico. There are 196 Temples worldwide and approximately 350k members. Shriners International is a fraternity based on fun, fellowship and the Masonic principles of brotherly love, relief and truth. We strive to continue support and provide care for our Hospitals for Children with a worldwide network, no matter the families ability to pay. Shriners International is among the greatest Philanthropy’s on the planet! Shriners Hospitals for Children has 21 health systems within the United States!
Hella Hospital Fund Raisers include (not limited to): • IHOP Day - members staff the restaurants within our jurisdiction and take donations for the purpose of supporting our kids, while IHOP offers all free pancakes on this one-day event.• Bucket Drive - Annual Collection Brigades, staff designated street locations to collect money for our hospitals (Fez on the corner, branding at its best!) Usually a two-day event. Shifts are available, any time increments from 30 min to 8 hours.• Hella Classic Dirt Track Race - Usually taking place at the Greenville Super Bowl Speedway. This event usually raises 20-30k dollars for our kids. Toys and Bicycles are drawn by tickets obtained at the box office and handed out by Nobles of the Shrine. It’s always a great family activity!• Clubs and Units around the jurisdiction of Hella will conduct annual fund raisers as well, and contribute to the Hospitals, Hospital Transportation, etc.• We raised more than 75k dollars in 2020 through these events!
Fun and Fellowship activities include (not limited to):• Potentates Ball - Formal party, well decorated with live music, dancing, dinner and open bar!• New Year’s Party - Decorated Ball Room, live music, dancing, and dinner, Champagne and Black-Eyed peas at mid night!• Super Bowl Party!• Jalapeno Cook-Off!• Easter Egg Hunt!• Hella Golf Tournament!• Sanctioned BBQ Contest!• Corn Hole Tournaments!• Halloween Party• Christmas Party!• City Parade participation, at least 3 times per year (every night of the State Fair of Texas)

Hella Shrine is in NO WAY trying to attract your attention away from your Blue Lodge commitment, but instead offer additional fraternal options that include your family. 101 Jalapeño Cook-off June 12, 2021
The Hella 101s held their 15th Jalapeño Cook-off on Saturday, June 12th in the ballroom. This is a Temple Fund Raiser and all proceeds from the raffle and silent auction are donated to the Temple Building Fund. A check will be presented at the September Stated Meeting. There were 44 entries for the four categories; 14 Stuffed, 11 Sweets, 9 Main and Sides, and 10 Appetizers and Snacks. The $5 entry fee is used to cover event expenses. By any measure, the event was a huge success with 70 in attendance. After a hot dog lunch, all were invited to sample the various entries (after judging). Judging was blind with a separate panel of five judges sampling each of the categories. Winners this year were: First Place: Sweets Main/Sides Stuffed Appetizers/Snacks

Top O’ DallasThe Top O’ Dallas Shrine Club celebrated its second post Covid meeting on May 27. Smaller crowd than before but still we had great music and good time had by all by the entertainment of the band, GATORBAIT!! See pics! The night began with President Wayne Walker conducting the meeting. Most of the Divan attended the meeting. A good time had by all!!We go Dark during the summer. However, we plan on attending a Frisco Roughriders and the local production of the Wizard of Oz in Richardson at the RCT before our next meeting.The next scheduled Top O’ Dallas meeting will be on Thursday, September 23, 2021. Hella Flying FezzesHella Flying Fezzes
TO ALL NOBLES INTERESTED IN FLYING OR AVIATION
We apologize for not making the Ennis and Denison Parades. Our renovation of our plane float trailer went longer than expected. Catch us in September as appear in the Garland Labor Day Parade. It’s definitely worth the wait. The Flying Fezzes were originally formed in 1976 to assist in transporting burned children and those with orthopedic needs to the Shrine Hospitals. Today, we assist in raising money for the transportation fund and help bring awareness for the hospitals through active participation in parades. However, we still look to the skies as a unit as we continue to fly our own aircraft. Comprised of pilots and those interested in flying or avia-tion, an open invitation is extended to who wish to join us to complete our mission. Our next Unit meeting for September will be at the Directors’ Staff Fish Fry after the parade. Annual dues are $25.00. All Nobles and their lovely Ladies are invited. Dear Noble Sirs, At the Imperial Session, we saw the unveiling of new Imperial Potentate Jeff Sowder’s “Just One” campaign to increase Shriner membership. A simple but powerful idea drives this initiative: If every current Shriner commits to recruiting or restoring “just one” noble to his temple, the ranks of our brotherhood will swell tremendously. In order to build enthusiasm for the Just One initiative and keep it going, we are instituting a multi-level program for recognizing and rewarding top-line signers in the creation/restoration process for their successful efforts bringing in new members or restoring suspended members. These are:• Level 1 – Upon creation or restoration of one member, the top-line signer will receive a postcard and Just One pin from Imperial Potentate Jeff Sowder.• Level 2 – Upon bringing in two members, the top-line signer will be listed in the Shriner Magazine.• Level 3 – With three new creations or restorations, the top-line signer will receive a certificate of appreciation and a letter of commendation from Imperial Sir Sowder.• Level 4 – After five creations or restorations, the top-line signer will receive a personal phone call from the Imperial Potentate.• Level 5 – Top-line signers responsible for 10 additional Shriner brothers will receive a special invitation to attend a Just One VIP reception with the Imperial Divan at the 2020 Imperial Session. Along with these points of recognition, your temple will probably also want to honor your brothers who embrace the challenge of helping grow local membership. As a record-keeping aid, “Just One” prospect cards were presented at Imperial Session, and will be made available to temples to share with their members. If your temple has members using the cards, you will either need to assign someone to collect them and enter the information into the WebFez MDS, or have the member enter the information himself.
