    THE PLANETARY NODES

    THE PLANETARY NODES

    by Pamela Rowe, LPMAFA, FMFAA

THE PLANETARY NODES by Pamela RoweThe Larousse 'Encyclopedia of Astrology' defines the Nodes as"Any pair of points marking the intersection of two planetaryorbits, especially the orbit of the Earth (that is, the Ecliptic)and that of another planet or the Moon. Nodes are four-dimensional aspects. They express the range of all possible

positions of two planets over time rather than relating theirmomentary position, as do ordinary aspects.

The North or Ascending Node of a planet or the Moon is thepoint where it crosses the ecliptic moving north (in thegeneral direction of the north celestial pole); the South ordescending Node is the point where the body crosses theecliptic moving south. The north node is directly opposite thesouth node, except in the case of geocentric planetary nodes.

The line joining the two nodes is called the nodal line, itrepresents the intersection of the two orbital planes."

Many books have been written depicting the North MoonNodes as having a Jupiter type influence, pointing the way toour positive development in life, whereas the South MoonNodes is depicted as an area of fear, free will in the guise ofhabit, legacy of the past, a person's youth or former lives and

serious lessons to be learnt -- in other words a Saturninfluence. Huber in "Moon Node Astrology" refers to the MoonNodes axis as 'unconscious and later conscious power'.

Despite the importance of the Lunar Nodes in chartinterpretation, the Planetary Nodes seldom rate a mentionthese days. Astrologer Gwen Stiefbold stimulated my interestin the Planetary Nodes in 1988, when I heard her lecture at

an AFA Convention in the USA. I have since researched thetopic, lectured and published articles on the Planetary Nodesin Australia and the USA.The Larousse 'Encyclopedia of Astrology' provides plenty ofuseful information on the Planetary Nodes and I recommendthis book for the astrological reference library .. There aretwo sets of Planetary Nodes -- the Heliocentric North andSouth Nodes, which are always exactly opposite and the

Geocentric Planetary Nodes, which apart from the LunarNodes, are rarely in exact opposition. The North and SouthGeocentric Nodes of Jupiter can vary by as much as two signsfrom opposition. The North and South Nodes of Mercury andVenus can be conjunct - which means that interpretationsbased on nodal polarity for the Geocentric Planetary Nodesare difficult.

The HELIOCENTRIC Planetary Nodes are the points where

two planetary orbits intersect, as considered from theviewpoint of the sun. The GEOCENTRIC Planetary Nodes arepoints where a planet's orbit intersects the ecliptic, from theviewpoint of the earth. This article covers the HeliocentricPlanetary Nodes only.

Both the Heliocentric Mean Nodes and the variable positionsof the ascending and descending Geocentric Planetary Nodes

can be found on 'Solar Fire' astrological software.

The Heliocentric Mean Nodes move very slowly -- atapproximately one degree per century, which may accountfor the fact that they are often overlooked. Their positions aslisted in the Larousse 'Encyclopedia of Astrology' for January

    1, 1980 are as follows:-

HELIOCENTRIC NORTH AND SOUTH NODES - JANUARY 1,1980

    MERCURY 17.59 Taurus (North Nodes) and 17.59 Scorpio(South Nodes)MARS 19.24 Taurus (North Nodes) and 19.24 Scorpio (SouthNodes)URANUS 14.01 Gemini (North Nodes) and 14.01 Sagittarius(South Nodes)VENUS 16.30 Gemini (North Nodes) and 16.30 Sagittarius

    (South Nodes)JUPITER 10.14 Cancer (North Nodes) and 10.15 Capricorn(South Nodes)PLUTO 19.54 Cancer (North Nodes) and 19.54 Capricorn(South Nodes)SATURN 23.30 Cancer (North Nodes) and 23.30 Capricorn(South Nodes)NEPTUNE 11.33 Leo (North Nodes) and ll.33 Aquarius (SouthNodes)

Plus ..CHIRON 29.09 Libra (North Nodes) and 29.09 Aries (SouthNodes)

MIXING AND MATCHINGComparison of the Heliocentric Planetary Nodes with theGeocentric Natal chart is very effective. The concept ofcomparing Heliocentric planet positions with the geocentric

chart is not new. In "Revolutionizing Astrology withHeliocentric", T.Patrick Davis outlines some fascinatingresearch in this area.It is likely that Heliocentric Planetary Node contacts in yournatal chart pinpoint areas where you relate to the 'world atlarge'. In particular, conjunctions and major aspects to the

natal Ascendant and Midheaven reinforce and add newdimensions of understanding as to what is perceived as yourlife path.Natal planets aspecting a Planetary Node or Nodes will be

coloured by the energy of that Planetary Node, providinganswers to questions not previously explained by planetaryaspects alone. One of my students commented that the"Planetary Nodes fill out the horoscope and reveal ways thatthe otherwise unrepresented parts weave in with thedominant configurations." -- Good observation

    PLANETARY NODES -- ORBS

Obviously the closer the orb the more powerful the influence.Because the Mercury/Mars and Venus/Uranus Nodes areclose pairs, tight orbs are essential. The Saturn and Plutonodes, three and a half degrees apart, are also close. A 2degree orb between a natal planet and a Planetary Nodeposition is considered reasonable.Whilst say a 4 degree orb between an accurately descriptivePlanetary Node to a natal Ascendant and Midheaven may beacceptable for some, it also gives scope for slight rectification

    of a given birth time.

PLANETARY NODES -- INTERPRETATIONTraditionally the North Node of any body represents 'intake'whilst the South Node represents 'release'. Because releasecan be more painful than intake, the South Node does notflow as smoothly as the North Node. As in all successfulinterpretation, the secret of working with the Planetary

Nodes is the same as all our other astrologicalinterpretations, that is to understand the message providedand 'move with the correct flow'.

MERCURY NODES provide further insight into mental facultiesand communication skills.

  • 7/28/2019 Helio Nodes

    5/13

VENUS NODES highlight relationships, extravagance andartistic talents.MARS NODES indicate assertive, aggressive behaviour, sporting prowess, accidents and operations.

JUPITER NODES highlight philosophy, education, travel andthe concept of expansion and protection.SATURN NODES indicate security, sometimes over-emphasised, ambition and hardships.URANUS NODES show clever, inventive and freedom-lovingtraits and determined self-will.NEPTUNE NODES indicate artistic and theatrical talents, plusareas of sensitivity and emotional confusion.

PLUTO NODES highlight determination, domination andexploration.CHIRON NODES express care for the wounded soul, lessonslearnt or taught.

If for example the Mercury North Nodes is conjunction theAscendant, it would enhance the communicative skills andmobility, whereas the Mercury South Nodes suggest thatthere may be slightly more difficulty in that area.

If for example the Mars North or South Nodes is conjunct orin hard aspect to the natal Mars, competitiveness would beincreased, but the tendency towards argumentativeness andaccidents may also be noticed. This phenomenom comesunder the category of 'maximum effectiveness'.

MAXIMUM EFFECTIVENESS occurs when a transitingGeocentric planet forms a conjunction or hard aspect to the

Heliocentric Nodes of that same planet. In the case of natalastrology, if the Heliocentric Nodes of a planet is conjunctthat particular planet in the geocentric natal chart and theplanet in question happens to be the chart ruler, orsignificantly placed in the natal chart, the effect of thatplanet increases dramatically -- see World Events and

    examples listed below.

WORLD EVENTS AND FAMOUS PEOPLEIf the theory holds water we can expect, when glancing down

the list of dates when the Geocentric Sun is conjunct theindividual Heliocentric Planetary Nodes, that the dates areclose to pivotal world events. Also the birthdays of famousand infamous people, who made or continue to make, animpact on the group consciousness of society. The type ofimpact made is described by the interpretation of theparticular Planetary Node. Some interesting world events areARMISTICE DAY November 11, 1918, the news that World

War I had finished, coincides with the Sun conjunct MercurySouth Nodes. The D-DAY INVASION OF EUROPE LANDINGSon June 6, 1944, coincides with the Sun conjunct UranusNorth Nodes.

TITANIC HITS ICEBERG AND SINKS - April 14, 1912 - Sun andMercury square Saturn Nodes, Midheaven conjunct ChironNorth Nodes, Geocentric Moon Nodes are square the PlutoNodes, Jupiter conjunct the Venus and Uranus South Nodes.

TERRORISTS ATTACK TRADE TOWERS NEW YORK -September 11, 2001 - Saturn conjunct Venus and UranusNorth Nodes, Uranux quincunx Saturn North Nodes, Plutoconjunct Uranus South Nodes, Venus square Mercury andMars North Nodes, Jupiter conjunct Jupiter North Nodes.

    - Ascendant and Chiron conjunct Saturn South Nodes, Saturnconjunct Saturn North Nodes, Neptune conjunct NeptuneSouth Nodes, Midheaven conjunct Chiron North Nodes. NOTE:This natural disaster reinforces my theory of maximum

effectiveness regarding the incidence of transiting planetsconjunct or in hard aspect to their Heliocentric PlanetaryNodes.

FAMOUS PEOPLEPeople born with Heliocentric Planetary Nodes conjunct theirnatal geocentric Sun position are PRINCESS DIANA ofEngland with Sun conjunct the Jupiter North Nodes (=the

golden child). Diana's Ascendant is conjunct the Venus andUranus South Nodes (=abrupt relationship conflicts, endings, release). The planets Venus and Uranus are also square inDiana's natal chart. At the time of the accident that led to herdeath, Diana's natal Ascendant/Descendant axis andconsequently the Venus/Uranus Nodes axis, was activated.PRINCE CHARLES and PRINCESS GRACE OF MONACO havetheir natal Sun conjunct the Mercury and Mars South Nodes.CHRISTINA ONASSIS, the wealthy but tragic heiress

daughter of Greek shipping leader Aristotle Onassis, has hernatal Sun conjunct the Venus South Nodes.

Computer whiz BILL GATES has the Jupiter Nodes axis squarehis natal Moon in Aries in the 10th house, opposition Mars in4th (=birth of new ventures, good fortune through themasses, comfortable home environment, legal and financialissues). His Ascendant is conjunct the Saturn North Node

(=discipline, perseverance, the Father figure, success throughacting and working alone).

The Great Australian swimmer IAN THORPE has Saturn as theruler of his natal chart. His natal Saturn is square the SaturnNodes axis, natal Sun square the Pluto Nodes axis. In his

natal chart Saturn is conjunct Pluto. His natal Mars isconjunct the Venus South Nodes and natal Ascendant trinethe Mars North Nodes. Ian's chart is an excellent example ofpositive reinforcement of powerful natal configurations,

suggesting enormous strength and determination to workhard and succeed.

Australian Prime Minister JOHN HOWARD has natal Venusconjunct the Saturn North Node (=love of order andstructure), Uranus conjunct the Mars North Node(=determination, inflammatory or aggressive action, successthrough positive exercise regime) and Ascendant conjunct

the Uranus North Node (=unexpected developments, initiating changes, personal inner change, variableenvironment).

COSMOBIOLOGISTS considering the planetary structurepatterns of the Heliocentric Planetary Nodes, as they relate toworld trends, will notice that the Venus and Uranus Nodes areconjunct the Midpoint of the Mars/Jupiter Nodes (=goodfortune, successful technology and breakthroughs, artistic

success). Venus Nodes is semi-square the midpoint ofNeptune/Pluto Nodes (=financial transformation andspeculation). The degrees of these midpoints are well worthwatching in natal and mundane charts for potential activationof these areas.

The close proximity of the Saturn and Pluto Nodes means thatthe Saturn/Neptune Node midpoint (2.31 Leo/Aquarius) is

close to conjunct the Pluto/Neptune Node midpoint (0.43Leo/Aquarius). These early degrees of the fixed signs becomevulnerable points for transits. For those feeling the pinch, theSaturn/Chiron oppositions were prevalent at these degrees inJuly 2005. Even the Saturn/Chiron oppositions in these signsin the first half of 2006, although wide, could be felt by many.

There is so much more information and research to sharewith the reader, but this will be included in a later article.

As we know, the effects of Solar Eclipses can manifest for

years. The August 11, 1999 Solar Eclipse at 18.21 Leo wassquare to the Mercury and Mars Nodes, reinforcing theemphasis on world-wide communication tests. Onemanifestation was the exaggeration of aggressive disputesand confrontations, which has been evident over the globe. However, the more inspiring interpretation of jointenterprises and advancement through team spirit andinternational co-operation, has also been part of the world

    scene in recent years.

YOUR OWN CHARTSI would be interested to hear from anyone who compares theHeliocentric Planetary Nodes (listed above in this article),with their own Geocentric natal chart positions and discoverssome interesting synchronicity not previously explained bytraditional interpretations.
