Mobility Concepts for Young Researchers
KANNO Chiyoko
Kyoto University – Kyoto University European Center, Heidelberg Office
Mission Statement (Excerpt)
that universities should provide education and training to
students and young researchers which prepare them for
the demands and challenges of a globalized world
to cooperate in the training of young researchers and to
develop joint programmes for graduate / doctoral students
to promote the mobility of academic staff, young
researchers and students within in the consortium
1st Students’ Workshop: Concept
“Bridging Cultures through Mobility in
Research, Higher Education and Innovation”
• Held at the 5th
Presidents’ Conference
• 15 Participants
(9 German students / 6
Japanese students)
• 2 x half day discussion
1st Students’ Workshop: Discussions
• Which added-value could HeKKSaGOn provide to students
and young researchers?
• Which incentives should/could HeKKSaGOn provide to
students?
• How does international experience contribute to the
development of students and young researchers?
• How should universities promote international cooperation
to students and young researchers?
“Bridging Cultures through Mobility in
Research, Higher Education and Innovation”
Final presentation in front of the 6 presidents
1st Students’ Workshop: Results
• Is there a chance to create HeKKSaGOn scholarships?
• Would it be possible to provide equal student status?
Questions addressed to the HeKKSaGOn Presidents:
To be discussed until the next meeting

Promotion Project for Foreign Language and Cultural Studies
Term: between 2 to 3 weeks (February – March, 2016)
Participants: 3 graduate students from Heidelberg University and KIT
Purpose: to promote their own studies in Applied Linguistics,
Speech/Natural Language Processing or Natural Sciences including Biology
and Zoology utilizing the academic environment in Kyoto
“What experience could this experience have on you as young
researchers as yourself?”
- “I could build networks with researchers at Kyoto University.”
- “I got an insight into many new fields of research, which had great impact
on me.”
- “From now on I know about the potential of HeKKSaGOn and JSPS
programs.”
- “I will search for opportunities to go to Japan as part of research
exchange.”
Structured exchange programmes for students shall be
established between the HeKKSaGOn member
universities.
“Structured exchange” means that the partner universities
have examined [...] the teaching content [...] on both sides
and agreed on its equivalence, so that full credit transfer to
the home university is guaranteed for the students
participating in the exchange.

Presidents’ Meeting 2016: Joint Statement
HeKKSaGOn –The German-Japanese University Network
The Future Vision of HeKKSaGOn
YONEZAWA Yukako
Tohoku University
Long-standing and solid relations between Japan and
Germany are essential
Long-lasting successful collaboration amongst
research institutions is imperative
Major global problems can only be solved by
interdisciplinary and international cooperation in
research and by the open and free exchange of
knowledge
Changes in one part of the world have effects in other parts
It is the responsibility of the scientifically and technologically
advanced nations to find solutions domestically and
internationally for the betterment of the world
Commitments and Convictions

Research and Educational Excellence

Member Universities’ Characteristics
• 6 member universities are research-oriented comprehensive
universities
• We promote initiatives for research and educational excellence
with government grants: Eagerness in developing
interdisciplinary research collaboration and graduate education
programs
• Germany and Japan have a potential to present
internationalization initiatives from a non-English-speaking
countries perspective
• Both nation states are seeking sustainability in ageing
societies
Future Visions of HeKKSaGOn
To maximize our potential…
•Keep a good balance of centralization and decentralization: Unit-based development with a bird’s-eye view
•Review and assessment of research/education activities
•Internal networking at each member university: Integrate and involve different stakeholders inside (senior leaders, researchers, students, administrators,…)
•External networking: Connect closer with different
stakeholders (government and quasi-government institutions,
research institutions, private institutes, local groups, NGOs,…)
