26th November 2015 Newsletter 22
Dear Parents,
Earn and Learn Program
Thank you to all families who supported the school with the recent ‘Earn and Learn’ Program last term. As a result of our school’s
token collection, we were able to order 2 book stands, a set of small whiteboards, alphabet strips and number lines for use in a
homestead. We thank our parent community for this terrific help in gaining additional resources for our students to enjoy.
Parent Payments
At the beginning of the term, all families received their parent payment details for essential fees to be paid. These essential fees
contribute towards the consumable materials children use in all of their learning programs, including their books and stationery
supplies, which are quality items, carefully sourced for their suitability for student use in schools. The computer levy greatly
assists with purchasing or leasing the latest computers or devices for classroom use.
This year 84 brand new notebooks were leased and have been used extensively by the
children for their work. In 2016, the school will be leasing a further 84 new
notebooks, to double the number of computers in the school. This is a great
achievement as computers are an expensive item if purchased outright. The computer
levy, as outlined in the parent payment information, significantly contributes towards
payment of these new computers. With this level of contribution, it enables our school
to continue to provide the best resources for your child’s education.
Christmas Carols
Mrs Theodore has started to rehearse our favourite Christmas Carols with all grades in
preparation for our ‘Carols’ night on Thursday 10th December. All children will be
performing grade and homestead items and putting on a small concert for our
community to enjoy. These nights are always well supported as families and teachers
get into the spirit of celebrating a wonderful year at FHPS. Children will be supervised
by their teachers only for the concert performance and will need to be supervised by at
least one adult member of their family for the remainder of the evening. We encourage
families to plan ahead with their friends to byo food and drink, no alcohol, for what
promises to be a wonderful school community event. Another flyer is attached to this
newsletter with details of the night.
Canteen
Our School Council periodically reviews canteen operations and would like to survey
the students and parents to gather further information about our FHPS Canteen Service.
We thank Linda our canteen manager for her dedication to providing a healthy choice
canteen menu that both appeals to the children and provides fresh healthy choice
meals. Further information about the survey will be forthcoming.
End of Year Special Events
With the end of year fast approaching, many celebratory and special events are being
planned for end of year concerts, excursions and occasions. Please keep abreast of the
communications relevant to your children and return notices and payments promptly to
assist with the planning of these special events.
Have a wonderful weekend.
Kind Regards, Cheryl Clark, Principal

DISMISSAL
Every Day Counts At Frankston Heights Primary School, we support the Victorian Education
Department’s stance on attendance, which states “Going to school every day is
the single most important part of your child’s education. Students learn new
things at school every day - missing school puts them behind.”
We are spreading the message that ‘Every Day Counts’. If your child misses
one day of school per fortnight, they would effectively
miss one whole month of schooling in a year. Now
imagine this over 13 years of their education.
We want every student to have the same wonderful
opportunities that we offer at F.H.P.S., and by working
together we can ensure this is achieved. If you are having
difficulties ensuring your child attends school each day,
or if you have any enquiries, please contact Jodi Craig
(Assistant Principal/Student Wellbeing Coordinator) to
discuss the matter further.

The Senior Homestead
The senior students have begun working on their very own passion projects. These projects are an inquiry-based assignment that involves the students researching a question they have
developed, relating to a topic they are passionate about.
These projects will be presented in a variety of ways, as the students have been given the opportunity to pick how they would like to
present it.
The senior students will be holding a homestead expo to display their projects in the last week of term. Look out for details regarding date and
time.
Some inquiry questions include:
How do you tame your pet bird?
What influenced Snoop Dog’s music?
How do you make electronic music?
What is the history of the AFL?
Why is the Leaning Tower of Pisa leaning?
Why are some people bullied?
How can we help reduce greenhouse gases?
Last Friday 20th November students from Senior School geared up
and set off to Linen House in Seaford for our first annual Bike Day.
Students were broken up into three smaller groups for the ride to
accommodate riding ability. We followed the new Peninsula Track
all the way down to Linen House where St Kilda FC call home. The
students were extremely excited for the ride and behaviour on the
day was tremendous. It was great to see almost all of the students
working together to get everyone home. A special mention to David
Mooney for coming along on the day to help out staff and students.

ALL ABOUT ANCIENT ROME
Have you ever wondered what it was like to live in Ancient Rome? During our Italian lessons we have been
taking a “step back in time” to experience all that ancient Rome had to offer. We are finding out that there
were some pretty gruesome events that took place.
The Year 1 and 2 students have been researching this ancient city and have found out the following:
1B now know that there were one million people living in Rome. They built walls and gates to stop people
from getting in.
1K found out that the Ancient Romans used to have baths together. They went into a big house with lots of
pools and a steam room.
2H have discovered that Rome had lots of people in charge called Emperors. The first Roman Emperor was
called Augustus.
2S now understand that Gladiators were people who fought in the Colosseum.
All of these fantastic facts have been collated into class stories all about Ancient Rome.
The year 3 and 4 students are looking into the folk tale of Androcles and the Lion. The idea that “one
good deed deserves another” has been a fascinating topic of discussion. They are working on short
plays in our class lessons.
Check out these resources with your child online:

The years 5 and 6 have taken a light hearted look at some of the seedier elements of Ancient Rome and
are exploring the death of the roman general Julius Caesar. I highly recommend watching the short
play with your child at home. It is a very funny depiction of one of the worst events in Roman history.

Go for 2 and 5! Most Australians eat only about half the recommended quantity
of fruit and vegetables. You need to eat two serves of fruit and
five serves of vegetables every day (one serve is roughly a hand-
ful of fruit or veg).
Here are some handy tips for getting more fruit and veg into your
day:
Add leftover vegies to an omelette for a healthy and filling
breakfast
Bananas, strawberries or tinned fruits can be blended along
with milk, yoghurt and ice for a delicious fruit smoothie
English muffins topped with diced vegies and cheese can be
turned into a quick mini pizza: a great idea for the lunch-
box!
Have low fat dips with carrot and celery sticks instead of
crackers
Add lots of vegies to stir frys, casseroles and curries
Beans or lentils taste great when added into soups
Chop different fruits and mix them with natural yoghurt for a
sweet and healthy dessert
More great ideas can be found at www.gofor2and5.com.au
Let’s talk about mental health
In Australia, one in six young people aged 16 to 24 years currently experiences anxiety and one in 16 young Australians currently experiences depression.
The University of Melbourne, with funding from BeyondBlue, has developed guidelines to help parents reduce the risk of depression and anxiety in their children. Some of the key things parents can do are:
Establish and maintain a good relationship with your child
Establish family rules and consequences
Encourage good health habits: diet, exercise, appropriate screen time and sleep
Minimise conflict in the home
Help your child to manage emotions
Help them to set goals and solve problems
Provide support when something is bothering them
Encourage professional help when needed
More information about the guidelines and other tips can be found at www.parentingstrategies.net/depression or www.beyondblue.org.au.
