    A common belief is that weight training is not recommended for children as it will stunt their growth and it is unsafe.     Growth rate is modified by mechanical loading. Compression slows down growth anddistraction speeds up growth. Heavy compressive exercises like squats and farme

    rs walk cause a lot of compression. Catch up growth has been shown to occur after release from loading. If weight lifting slows down growth then it allows for time for stem cells to head into the hyaline cartilage growth plate line which will result in more final growth.

    Note growth cessation differs from growth fusion. As long as growth is occuring,fusion between the epiphysis and the diaphysis is not possible. Growth cessatio

    n occurs as a result of a lack of new stem cells in the hyaline cartilage growth

    plate line. And how do you get new stem cells into the hyaline cartilage growthplate line?

    There are a bunch of stem cells just hanging out in the bone marrow of the epiphysis. By dynamic loading, you are increasing fluid flow which helps to transportstem cells into the hyaline cartilage growth plate line. You are also helping t

    ransport nutrients and ions into the hypertrophic chondrocytes which results inincreased chondrocyte hypertrophy. Chondrocyte hypertrophy plays a huge role inhow tall you will be.

    Now there are some who say that exercise increases testosterone which aromatasesto estrogen. They also say Estrogen is responsible for growth plate fusion. Est

    rogen is responsible for growth plate fusion. But growth plate fusion cannot occ

    ur until after growth plate cessation has completed and is it's own process. Estrogen during growth regulates cellular proliferation and differentiation. You need estrogen to be in an optimal range to maximize cellular proliferation. Increasing testosterone in kids is good because testosterone inhibits myostatin and myostatin inhibits cellular proliferation!

    Now, the epiphysis of the bone is special. When you lift weights, most of the load is transferred to the diaphysis of the bone. Why not load the epiphysis of the bone directly? For other types of bones, it is easy to load the entire bone. Just use a dumbell or table clamp to put a load on the epiphysis of the bone generating pressure and sending fluids through to the growth plate.

    Weightlifting doesn't stunt development. Not weightlifting stunts development.
