This is your homework booklet for the third half term. Your teachers will explain to you your homework and the tasks set in the lessons. If there are things about the booklet that you don’t understand then you can talk to your tutor or your subject teacher who will be able to help you.

How to Use Your Booklet:

This booklet contains your homework for all subjects other than Maths, English, Languages and Art. These subjects will set you homework to put in your planner.

Some of the subjects in the booklet are set on a rotation basis, so you may not be doing these until later in the year.

Each task has a date that you must complete it by. If the box is empty, your teacher will tell you a date to put in.

On occasions, some subjects will ask you to complete homework tasks in your school books. If not, please complete on a separate piece of paper which will be added to your class books once finished.

Your subject teacher will mark your homework and provide you with feedback.

Parent Page

This booklet contains all the homework for the third half term for every subject other than English, Maths, Art and Languages. These subjects set their homework more regularly and students enter these subject tasks into their planner.

We hope that being able to see their whole half terms homework upfront will allow students to plan and organise their time more effectively.

Homework pages are dissected into tasks which each have a deadline. These tasks tie in with their lessons at school so to ensure that the homework tasks compliment the learning done in class.

Your son or daughter can manage their own time to ensure that they complete all of the tasks in the various subjects in the homework books.

Your son and daughter should never have the excuse that they’ve not got any homework to do!

DT and Performing Art are on a rotation basis so not ALL tasks will need to be completed. If you have any concerns, please do not hesitate to contact the subject teacher to discuss any issues

In class we will start our initial ideas You will need to complete all 3 ideas and include arrows to show the types of movement you intend to make.

There are many different ways to produce movement in the mechanical toy project including pulleys, cranks, pivots and cams. Find at least 10 different mechanical projects. Produce an A4 mood board of the best ones and label them to explain what parts you like and why.

We used CAD and CAM to produce the designs (moving parts) on top of our project. CAD was the design and CAM was the use of the laser cutter. Produce an A4 poster showing other examples of CAM machines and how they are used in industry.

Produce a fact sheet on 5 different types of cam that could be used in your design. You need to show with diagrams what type of moment each of the cams produce. Must include: 2 small diagrams for each one showing high / low point Labels on diagrams Arrows showing movement

Task Four - CAD - CAM

The mechanical toy project that you will be working on is based upon the mecha-nism above. Your job as the lead designer is to develop a toy that has 3 cam’s producing atleast 3 different movements. The movements that these make are up to you. you have 3 spaces to do your initial designs. You do not need to draw out the designs for the cams, but you do need to draw the designs for the parts that will move on top of the box holding the mechanism. For example you would have to draw Snoopy and show which bits move with arrows and an explination if you were going to make the Snoopy version on the right. These are just for inspiration and show different types of movement. You can choose what ever you wish for your toy.

Topic - BBQ Spatula

Task 1: Research Due:

Research using ‘Google Images’ between 10 to 15 interesting designs for barbecue spatulas, forks and tongs. Copy and paste these images onto 1 side of A4 paper and add technical information on sizes, materials and construction methods.

Remember to add a title, border and label the homework with your name.

Task 2: Component drawing Due:

Complete the component design drawing using ‘Techsoft 2D Design’ for your barbecue spatula adding labels and dimensions as well as your individual design ideas.

Remember to click ‘printer properties’ and choose landscape and ‘fit drawing to media print area’.

Task 3: Production Plan Due:

Complete and print your Production Plan with all tasks, possible problems and quality checks listed as well as adding images of sketches for each practical task.

Task 4: Evaluation Due:

Complete a final Evaluation for your design and practical work using the 9 questions on the work sheet provided. Ensure you answer all of the questions in as much detail as you can explaining your answer well.

Remember to use punctuation, spell check and grammar in your work.

Topic - Photograph Frames

Task 1 - Laser Cutter Create a leafl et about using the laser cutter to create products. Task 3: Isometric DrawingChoose a product at home that interests you, try to keep the product simple, maybe an ipad or an electronic device, an accessory in the home or in your bedroom.

Look at the layout opposite, this is how your page should be presented out with the title in the middle of the title block, your name and date either side of this.

TIP - remember to follow the rules of anisometric, 30 degree angle, follow the construction lines on the grid paper only.

Textiles Topic—Sock Monkeys

Task 1—Toy Safety

In lesson you watched a video based on toy safety and started a PowerPoint Presentation to ex-plain some of the tests they do in the industry. Using this information and further research, design a poster to explain how to make sure a toy is safe.

Vivienne Westwood, Zandra Rhodes and Stella McCartney are all British fashion designers. You will need to use the internet or books to research the work of one of the designers from the list. Use images and text to present the infor-mation in the form of a poster, booklet or PowerPoint Presentation.

Task 3—Design

From your research you must now design a soft toy in the style of the designer you picked to research for your previ-ous homework, (e.g Vivienne Westwood, Zandra Rhodes or Stella McCartney.) This must be designed on A4 plain pa-per in full colour with as much detail as you can include. Include annotation using ACCESS FM to explain your idea.

Task 4— Step by step construction of toy

Now you have made your soft toy prototype, you will need to create a flowchart or a step by step instruction manual of how your toy was made. It will need to include pictures and diagrams as well as text to explain how to put your toy together. Present this nicely with colour and it make it clear so that others would be able to make your toy!

Year 8 Geography Homework

Third half term - Rivers

This half term there is one main research task. However, in addition to this you should review each week the new words that we have learnt in class. Make sure you know what they mean and how to spell them. Your geography teacher might give you extra resources or warn you to expect a vocabulary test next lesson. Research task Due in: Find out about a river of your choosing or a river landform. You could conquer the River Colne, dive into Angel Falls, or paddle across the Nile Delta. Show your understanding of the river or river landform by mocking up a facebook page for it. (You can just do this on paper or draw text boxes into a word document). Consider the status of the landform, who it has for friends, how old it is, how it was made and what it is made of, who would ‘like’ it and how it interacts with people. Be creative but include facts and figures, images, maps, and of course key geographical terminology.

You will need to think about what you are going to change and what you are going to measure during the practical.

Once you know what you are changing you need to consider all the things that you will need to keep the same so that the test is fair.

You will need to write up the plan so that you know exactly what to do and if someone wanted to repeat the experiment they will know how to do it.

Task 3: Performing the practical Due in: 28.01.15

You need to come up with a results table – think about how many repeats you will do so that your experiment is reliable.

You will follow your plan and write down your results in a table. You might need to work out averages of your results. Make a note of any changes in your plan – sometimes things do not go as

intended!

Task 4: Present your data and Conclude Due in: 10.02.15 You should use your data to draw a line graph. You will then use your results to write a conclusion – what did you find out? If there were things that you think could have been improved say what they

were, how you would change them and why it would make your experiment better.

Dance Homework

TOPIC: Free Running

Aim/Context of Project

Your homework project will link to the dance knowledge you developed in year 7 and your first dance rotation in year 8. You will complete each task in relation to your current topic in this rotation – Free Running. There are many aspects which need to be consider when creating, learning and performing Free Running/

You will develop your dance appreciation skills in this project, which will link in with the choreography and performance skills developed over your dance lessons.

Free running can be extremely dangerous and a lot of healthy and safety requirements need to be consider when learning, creating and performing. You need to create a health and safety poster for the use of props/free running in dance. Consider the different aspects that have been spoken about in your lessons so far.

Complete the evaluation sheet provided to you by your teacher. This sheet requires you to reflect upon the skills you have developed through this rotation. Consider the performance skills and choreographic skills discussed in this lesson. What are your strengths and areas of development? Can you set targets from your areas of development?
