A holistic approach to educating tomorrow'sbusiness leaders

As we grapple with the ongoing impact of the financial crisis and the challenges of a global marketplace, "hard" business skills are proving insufficient for effective leadership. In an effort to train more well-rounded leaders, the need to introduce a cross section of disciplines such as arts, music, history and philosophy to management curricula has neverbeen more relevant.

HEC Paris sees this approach to business education as not simply a post-recession trend, but a modus operandi. For years now, we have been moving away from a strictly business approach by preparing graduates to look beyond short-term indicators and consider the long-term implications of their business decisions.

To help broaden our students' vision, our courses continue to have strong historical and philosophical foundations that place current thinking in a much wider context. Exposure to different cultures via initiatives such as the Master in Medias, Art and Creation, student exchanges, extra-curricular associations and the HEC Paris Contemporary Art Space encourage our students to consider business problems through different lenses.

One exciting addition to our offering is our new collaboration with the Guimet Museum ofAsian Arts in Paris. The partnership aims to expose HEC Paris students to a widerunderstanding of Asian cultures, which are increasingly influential in the global businessenvironment.

Leadership is neither an innate quality nor something taught in the classroom; it is a skill thatmust be nurtured and strengthened in the right setting. An HEC Paris degree facilitates amulti-dimensional union of business and leadership, with analytical, humanistic and sociologicfacets. Our ongoing partnerships in the arts and humanities course offerings will enable ourstudents to develop different aspects of their management skills, enhancing their capacity tocreate, lead and dare in an ever-changing world.

HEC Paris solidifies its Masters-level businesseducation portfolio

HEC Paris welcomes students from over 95 countries

Nearly 130 years after the launch of its Master of Science (MSc) inManagement Grande Ecole program, HEC Paris offers its mostdiverse Masters-level business education portfolio to date. Today, this wide range of programs enables HEC Paris to meet thechanging needs of tomorrow’s business leaders.

Dynamic programs for a diverse audienceIn 1881, HEC Paris opened its doors to offer the MSc inManagement Grande Ecole degree, an 18-month full-time businessprogram. Beginning in 1986, the school expanded its offering by introducing a range ofMasters programs to appeal to professionally experienced candidates with an advanced-leveldegree unrelated to business, such as engineering. More recently, HEC Paris broadened itsacademic portfolio with 12-month Masters programs to target business-educated candidateswith little to no professional experience. These programs, offering a curriculum entirely inEnglish, allow participants to specialize in one of five areas: International Business, Finance,Managerial and Financial Economics, Sustainable Development and Marketing.

Internationalizing one of Europe’s leading management schoolAccording to Eloïc-Anil Peyrache, Associate Dean of HEC Paris’ MSc in ManagementProgram, this comprehensive portfolio of Masters-level programs is designed to establish HECParis as the leading provider of graduate business education.

“HEC Paris’ goal is to be an international player. To achieve this, we need to make our schoolmore accessible to top-notch candidates from around the world,” he explains. “By offering amore complete program portfolio, we are able to open our doors to a wider range ofparticipants.”

Preparing for an international careerHEC Paris’ latest additions, the 12-month Masters programs, focus on providing theacademic and practical knowledge required for a global career in management. To bolsterparticipants’ international experience, most programs offer internship and placementopportunities in France or abroad. Additionally, several 12-month Masters programs offer adouble degree in partnership with leading international management schools, including theNorwegian School of Economics in Bergen, Norway, and Fundaçao Getulio Vargas in SãoPaolo, Brazil.

“The real strengths of the 12-month Masters programs are their in-depth course coverage ofmajor academic and business trends, placement opportunities all over the world, and HEC

HEC Paris MBA cracks top 10 in TheEconomist's annual rankings

In 2010, HEC Paris moved up to ninth place in The Economist’sannual list of the best business schools. This latest achievementmarks the first time the institution has entered the top 10, joiningother prestigious institutions such as Harvard Business School,Stanford Graduate School and the University of California Berkeley’sHaas School of Business.

Steadily climbing the rankingsThe rankings are based on rigorous criteria that evaluate school graduates’ careerperformance, specifically focusing on position and salary, as well as program curriculum andglobal partner networks. This year’s criteria considered the career performance of graduatesover the last three classes, from 2008 to 2010.

According to HEC Paris Dean Bernard Ramanantsoa, multiple factors contributed to helpingthe program break into the top 10—up from 44th only five years ago: “We are very pleasedwith this performance, but it’s not by chance that we’ve reached this level,” he explains.“Today’s top-10 ranking is a result of vision, strategy and collective involvement for a high-quality MBA.”

Strengthening a solid strategy based on diversityThe HEC Paris program focuses on delivering all the core management competencies alongwith solid leadership abilities. In addition, the placement and recruitment policy is diverse: theprogram attracts 83% non-French participants from 55 countries, and the school offersplacements in organizations around the world. This diversity also applies to sectors: 50% ofplacements are in industry, 20% in consulting, 20% in finance and 10% in services.

Professor Bernard Garrette, who was recently elected as Associate Dean for the HEC ParisMBA and will officially begin his tenure in January 2011, notes that improving students’experience will be key to maintaining momentum in coming years.

“The top-tier position that the school has built in the global, hyper-competitive MBA market isa great achievement that creates obligations. The higher we climb the global MBA-rankingladder, the greater the expectations we create,” he says. “My main objective will therefore beto enhance the MBA participant experience as much as possible.”

HEC Europe Institute helps map the EU'seconomic future

Noëlle Lenoir speaks at the “Europe 2020 and France: preparing for the future beyond the crisis” conference

On September 10, 2010, the HEC Europe Institute and the FrenchRepresentation of the European Commission in partnership with theCercle des Européens hosted a conference titled “Europe 2020 andFrance: preparing for the future beyond the crisis”. The Paris-basedevent launched a national debate on Europe 2020, the neweconomic strategy for the European Union (EU) that member statesadopted in June.

Noëlle Lenoir, HEC Europe Institute President, Chair of the Cercle des Européens and formerFrench Minister of European Affairs, talks about Europe 2020 and the conference’s role insupporting its success.

What is the current state of Europe and how will this new economic strategyadvance its future?Europe is one of the most peaceful, democratic and open markets in the world and Europeansenjoy a high quality of life, but we’re losing steam. Today, Europe is facing tremendouseconomic and social pressures as a result of the global financial crisis, increased economiccompetition from emerging international leaders like China, and growing environmentalconcerns.

To be a global power, we need to unite and create a real European government to advanceour competitiveness. Europe 2020 is a roadmap for Europe’s future. Each member state hasobjectives in five key areas—research and innovation, employment, education, theenvironment and the fight against poverty—and is working toward achieving them at anational level.

How did the conference support Europe 2020?The conference raised awareness of Europe’s challenges and how Europe 2020 addressesthose issues. Based on the event’s success, we hope French EC representatives will continueto organize similar debates in communities and universities across the country.

Why did the EC select the HEC Europe Institute to co-organize this event? The EC chose the HEC Europe Institute for a number of reasons. In 2006, HEC Paris hostedEC President José Manuel Barroso’s “Europe on Campus” conference. Secondly, as aninternationally renowned business school based in France, HEC Paris actively takes part indiscussions on Europe’s economic competiveness. Finally, I co-founded the institute with HECParis Deputy Dean in charge of Executive Education and Academic Development BertrandMoingeon in 2004 to facilitate a dialogue between Europe and the rest of the world.

What are your hopes for 2011?In Europe, I would like to see the launch of the Galileo project, a European version of theUnited States’ Global Positioning System. In France, I hope that the government can continuewith reforms in retirement and education, while increasing investments in biotechnology.

A passion for research excellenceWorld-renowned as a founder of neuropharmacology in France, Glowinski has a 40-yearhistory in neurotransmission research. His illustrious research career began at the PasteurInstitute and the National Institutes of Health in the United States, where he trained alongsideNobel Prize winner J. Axelrod. Paving the road for brain researchAddressing a packed amphitheater of new HEC Paris students, Glowinski spoke on “The brain:the state of current research”. During his speech, he highlighted significant developments inthe neurosciences since the 1960s and his early years as one of the first Frenchneuropharmacologists. Specifically, he noted the impact of molecular biology and genetics onneurosciences in the 1980s, a period when multiple disciplines began to take a greaterinterest in the brain.

“Neurological illnesses are not simply a research and development issue, but a problem forsociety: 5 million people are affected directly or indirectly by disorders such as Alzheimer’sand Parkinson’s,” he noted.

An opening into the world of Asian artand culture

Left: Musée Guimet’s Asian arts collectionRight: Dean Bernard Ramanantsoa and Musée Guimet Director Jacques Giès sign the new partnership agreement

HEC Paris recently signed a three-year exclusive partnership withthe Guimet Museum of Asian Arts to promote Asian arts to theschool’s students from a managerial and multicultural perspective.According to HEC Paris Dean Bernard Ramanantsoa, the twoinstitutions share a similar purpose and ambition: “It is well knownthat an appreciation of art encourages a more profoundunderstanding of how societies have evolved. This collaboration withthe Musée Guimet will provide our students, as well as our teachingand research staff, with a new and stimulating arena for reflection”.

A fitting backdrop for Asian civilizationsThe Musée Guimet owes its existence to the vision of 19th-century French industrialist EmileGuimet (1836-1918), who envisioned a museum devoted to ancient Egypt, classical antiquityand Asia. This vision stemmed from his travels to Egypt, Greece, Japan, China and India, from which he amassed a large collection of artifacts. Originally displayed in Lyon, these itemswere eventually transferred to Paris, where a new building was inaugurated in 1889. As theyears passed, the museum increasingly focused on Asian civilizations following a series ofsuccessful expeditions in the Far East.

Facilitating a cross-cultural appreciationOver a century later, a renovation transformed the Musée Guimet into a major Europeancenter for the appreciation and understanding of Asian civilizations. This vast undertaking, initiated in 1996, aimed to incorporate the latest developments in museum science and meetnew requirements for the display and conservation of artworks. The 5,500 m2 of permanentgallery space gives priority to natural lighting and open perspectives, and is designed toencourage links between the different Asian artistic traditions.

Where culture and management meetAs part of the agreement, HEC Paris MSc and MBA students can enrol in courses taught bysome of the museum’s experts and curators that are centered on the permanent collections.Through these learning sessions, HEC Paris students will be able to gain a deeper knowledgeof Asian culture and history.

“The museum is much more than a safe-deposit box for antiques. The value of the Asiandynamic in our modern-day world is changing: Asian cultures are, for the first time in Westernhistory, making a place for themselves that grows larger every day. We believe that the timehas come to reflect on and reconsider our notion of Musée Guimet,” concludes Musée Guimet
