PREFACK.Tlie " Hebrew Vocabularies '' is intended for students who

desire to gain a living familiarity with the Hebrew language. The chief difficulty to overcome in the mastery of the Hebrewlanguage is the acquisition of a vocabulary. There are butfew words in Hebrew with which corresponding ones inEnglish, of similar sound and signification, maybe associated. The old method of acquiring a vocabulary, that is, by lookingup a word in a Lexicon every time it occurs until it becomesfamiliarfor this, life is too short. The average student willlook for the same word twenty times before he will reallyknow it ; meanwhile he might have memorized ticenty tcords.Yet it is not well for a beginner to attempt to memorize theLexicon. He should be given lists of the words which occurmost frequently. Of the seven or eight thousand vocableswhich occur in the Hebrew language, about one thousandoccur over twentj-five times ; about eight hundred betweenten and twenty-five times. If the learner will memorize fiveor six words a day, within six or eight months he will havemastered a vocabulary sufficient to enable him to read anyportion of the Hebrew of the Old Testament with considera-ble ease. Three words, those meaning to say, God, Son,occupy sixty pages of the Hebrew text. The sixty-threeverbs given in Lists I. and II. occupy tivo hundred pages, andthe first sixty nouns given in Lists YIL and VIII. occupy tivohundred and twenty-five pagestogether about one-third ofthe entire Old Testament, and in this calculation derivativesare not included. The book may be used in many ways. The author has

found one plan especially helpful. When the class has fin-ished the first chapter of Genesis, the first lists of both verbsand nouns are examined and the words occurring in the

    14/196

vi Preface.chapter just studied are checked. This aids in impressingthe several words upon the mind of the student. The samething is done when the second, third and fourth chaptershave been studied. In connection with sight-reading theyanie plan may be adopted with good results. The "Yerbs arranged according to their stems'' (Lists

XYIII.-XXIY.), and "verbs arranged according to the char-acter of their radicals " (Lists XXY.-XLT.) may be used inconnection with grammatical study. This use may also bemade of the " Nouns arranged according to their Formation."The following points deserve attention :1) The " Yocabularies " is not intended as, in any manner,

a substitute for the lexicon, but to be used with constantreference to it.

    2) In the Lists of Nouns arranged according to their Sig-nification (XCY.-CXXY.) rare words are occasionally given, but only when it has seemed best to make the list compara-tively exhaustive.

    3) Since it has always been the aim to present the mostusual meaning of a word, secondary instead of primary mean-ings will often be found given.

    4) The Lists of Nouns arranged according to Formation, will be found convenient fur the study of that much neg-lected, yet very important part of Hebrew Grammar, Noun-formation. When the origin of a noun is uncertain, it isoften difficult to decide upon its formation ; in general, how-ever, the classification will be found satisfactory.

    5) In the List of Nouns derived from the most commonroots, the arrangement is intended (a) to assist the pupil ingetting more firmly fixed the meaning of the root by asso-ciating with it one or more derivatives ; (b) to show theparticular meanings of the various formations. In order toaccomplish both these things a-a^ leyuixva are frequentlythough not always inserted. The treatment does not aim tobe exhaustive ; and yet it will be found practically to be so.Space has been left in the printing of the rare formations inorder that the student may insert similar forms found in hisreading.

Preface. vi)6) The " List of Commoii Idioms," if thoroughly mastered,

will aid greatly both in a better understanding of the Hebrewtext and in a better expression of its moaning in English.

In Lists I.-XYIL, and in List CXXXI., the Hebrew andEnglish are given on different pages in order that the bookmay thus be more easily made use of in the class-room.

It was proposed to include other material than that heregiven ; but the demand for the book has been so pressing, andthe delay of publication has already been so great, that it isthought best to leave this additional material for a later edi-tion.The principal lexicons, concordances and similar bookshave been used in making out these lists. In former editions(1882, 1883) my brother, Mr. Robert F. Harper, and in thisedition my friend, Mr. A. S. Carrier, have rendered valuableaid in the work of collecting and arranging words.Great care has been taken to make the lists accurate ; but

it is reasonable to suppose that omissions and errors will befound. Corrections will be thankfully received.WILLIAM R. HARPER.Yale University i
