6. MAKE WORKSHOP CHILD PROOF withpadlocks, master switches, or by removingstarter keys.

7. DO NOT FORCE TOOL. It will do the jobbetter and safer at the rate for which it wasdesigned.

8. USE RIGHT TOOL. Do not force tool orattachment to do a job for which it was notdesigned.

9. USE PROPER EXTENSION CORD. Makesure your extension cord is in good condi-tion. Conductor size should be in accor-dance with the chart below. The amperagerating should be listed on the motor or toolnameplate. An undersized cord will cause adrop in line voltage resulting in loss of powerand overheating. Your extension cord mustalso contain a ground wire and plug pin.Always repair or replace extension cords ifthey become damaged.

10. WEAR PROPER APPAREL. Do not wearloose clothing, gloves, neckties, rings,bracelets, or other jewelry which may getcaught in moving parts. Non-slip footwear isrecommended. Wear protective hair cover-ing to contain long hair.

11. ALWAYS USE SAFETY GLASSES. Also useface or dust mask if cutting operation is dusty.Everyday eyeglasses only have impact resis-tant lenses, they are NOT safety glasses.

12. SECURE WORK. Use clamps or a vise to holdwork when practical. It’s safer than using yourhand and frees both hands to operate tool.

13. DO NOT OVER-REACH. Keep proper foot-ing and balance at all times.

14. MAINTAIN TOOLS WITH CARE. Keeptools sharp and clean for best and safestperformance. Follow instructions for lubri-cating and changing accessories.

15. USE RECOMMENDED ACCESSORIES.Consult the owner’s manual for recom-mended accessories. The use of improperaccessories may cause risk of injury.

Safety Instructions For Power Tools16. REDUCE THE RISK OF UNINTENTION-

AL STARTING. On machines with mag-netic contact starting switches there is arisk of starting if the machine is bumped orjarred. Always disconnect from powersource before adjusting or servicing. Makesure switch is in OFF position before recon-necting.

17. MANY WOODWORKING TOOLS CAN“KICKBACK” THE WORKPIECE towardthe operator if not handled properly. Knowwhat conditions can create “kickback” andknow how to avoid them.

18. CHECK DAMAGED PARTS. Before fur-ther use of the tool, a guard or other partthat is damaged should be carefullychecked to determine that it will operateproperly and perform its intended function.Check for alignment of moving parts, bind-ing of moving parts, breakage of parts,mounting, and any other conditions thatmay affect its operation. A guard or otherpart that is damaged should be properlyrepaired or replaced.

19. NEVER LEAVE TOOL RUNNING UNAT-TENDED. TURN POWER OFF. Do notleave tool until it comes to a complete stop.

20. NEVER OPERATE A MACHINE WHENTIRED, OR UNDER THE INFLUENCE OFDRUGS OR ALCOHOL. Full mental alert-ness is required at all times when runninga machine.

21. NEVER ALLOW UNSUPERVISED ORINEXPERIENCED PERSONNEL TOOPERATE THE MACHINE. Make sureany instructions you give in regards tomachine operation are approved, correct,safe, and clearly understood.

Additional Safety Instructions For Table Saws1. ALWAYS use blade guard, splitter and

anti-kickback fingers on all ''through-saw-ing'' operations. Through-sawing opera-tions are those when the blade cuts com-pletely through the workpiece as in rippingor crosscutting.

2. AVOID KICKBACKS. A condition in whicha piece of wood is thrown back towards anoperator at a high rate of speed. If you donot have a complete understanding of howkickback occurs, or how to prevent it, DONOT operate this table saw.

3. NEVER reach behind or over the bladewith either hand for any reason.

4. ALWAYS use a push-stick for ripping nar-row stock.

5. NEVER perform any operation ''free-hand,'' which means using only your handsto support or guide the workpiece. Alwaysuse either the fence or the miter gauge toposition and guide the work.

6. NEVER stand or have any part of yourbody in line with the path of the saw blade.

7. USE GREAT CARE WHEN CUTTINGWITH A DADO BLADE. There is a highdegree of risk involved with any dado oper-ation. Slight movement of the stock awayfrom the fence will cause kickback. Nevermake a through cut using a dado blade.

8. MOVE the rip fence out of the way whencrosscutting.

9. NEVER use the miter gauge and rip fenceat the same time.

10. NEVER attempt to free a stalled saw bladewithout first turning the saw OFF.

11. PROVIDE adequate support to the rearand sides of the saw table for wide or longworkpieces.

12. AVOID awkward operations and handpositions where a sudden slip could causeyour hand to move into the blade.

14. ALWAYS LOWER OR REMOVE SAWBLADE WHEN NOT IN USE.

15. NEVER USE A DAMAGED SAW BLADEOR ONE THAT HAS BEEN DROPPED.

16. ALWAYS keep the work firmly against themiter gauge or fence while holding thework down against the table.

No list of safety guidelines can be com-plete. Every shop environment is different.Always consider safety first, as it applies toyour individual working conditions. Usethis and other machinery with caution andrespect. Failure to follow guidelines couldresult in serious personal injury, damage toequipment or poor work results.

Push SticksThe use of push sticks (shown in Figure A), par-ticularly when cutting small or narrow workpieces,provides a double benefit for saw operators. Thepush stick provides added leverage, enabling theoperator to keep the workpiece firmly supportedagainst the fence and table. At the same time, thepush stick keeps the operator’s hand safely awayfrom the rotation of the saw blade. See the tem-plate at the end of the manual for constructiondetails, or purchase one from the Grizzly catalog.

Zero Clearance Table InsertsIdeal for use when ripping thin strips or makingbevel cuts, these prevent tearout and jammedblades by supporting material close to the blade.Use the standard table insert as a template whencreating additional inserts from wood or plywood.Blade slot inserts can be custom cut for specificblade angles by raising the running blade into anuncut insert at the angle you desire. Be sure tomake an additional slot for the blade splitter. Wealso carry a wide selection of table inserts (shownin Figure 1) in the Grizzly catalog. Be sure to holdthe insert firmly in place with a piece of woodwhen creating slots. Never hold the table insertwith your hand while cutting new slots.

Safety AccessoriesStatistics prove that most common acci-dents among table saw users can belinked to kickback. Kickback is typicallydefined as the high-speed expulsion ofstock from the table saw toward its opera-tor. In addition to the danger of the opera-tor or others in the area being struck bythe flying stock, it is often the case thatthe operator’s hands are forced into theblade during the kickback. The followingcan help minimize kickbacks.

1. Use your blade guard and splitter.2. Never for any reason place your hand

behind the blade. Should kickbackoccur, your hand will be pulled into theblade.

3. Inspect splitter for alignment between itand your blade.

4. Never use the fence as a guide for cross-cutting.

5. Never attempt freehand cuts.6. Use a pushstick or featherboard to main-

tain control of your workpiece.7. Feed cuts through to completion.8. Stand to the side when ripping.9. Ensure your fence and miter slot are par-

allel to the blade.

If you do not have a clear understanding ofkickback and how it occurs, do not operatethis table saw.

Push PaddlesPush paddles provide added leverage and sup-port when ripping or crosscutting wide work-pieces. We offer a number of push paddles in theGrizzly catalog. See Figure 2.

FeatherboardEasily made from scrap stock, featherboardsprovide an added degree of protection againstkickback. To make a featherboard, cut a 30-40° angle at one end of the board and make anumber of end cuts at approximately 1⁄4" apartand 2" to 3" deep. We also offer a number offeatherboards in the Grizzly catalog. SeeFigure 3.

Common Definitions, Terms and PhrasesThe following is a list of common definitions, terms and phrases used throughout this manual as they relateto this table saw and woodworking in general. It is important that you read and become familiar with thembefore assembling, adjusting or operating this machine. Your safety is VERY important to us at Grizzly!

Arbor: Metal shaft extending from the drivemechanism, to which the cutting blade isattached.

Bevel Edge Cut: Tilting the saw arbor and bladeto an angle between 0° and 45° to perform anangled cutting operation.

Blade Guard: Metal or plastic mechanism thatmounts over the saw blade to prevent acciden-tal contact with the cutting edge.

Crosscut: Table saw operation in which the mitergauge is used to cut across the grain of a pieceof wood.

Dado Blade: Blade or set of blades that attach tothe arbor and are used for cutting grooves andrabbets.

Dado Cut: Table saw operation that uses a dadoblade to cut a flat bottomed groove into theface of wood stock.

Featherboard: Safety device used to keep aboard against the rip fence or table. Allowsoperator to keep hands away from the sawblade.

Kerf: The resulting cut or gap made by a sawblade.

Kickback: A condition in which the wood isthrown back towards an operator at a high rateof speed.

Miter Gauge: A component that controls thewood stock movement while performing acrosscut. Allows for variation of angle cutssuch as miter cuts used on a picture frame.

Moulding Head: A cutterhead attached to thearbor. Accepts interchangeable mouldingknives for profile cutting. We DO NOT recom-mend the use of a moulding head as theyrequire advanced skills in their operation.

Parallel: Being an equal distance apart at everypoint. i.e. the rip fence face is parallel to theside face of the saw blade.

Non-Thru Cut: A sawing operation that requiresthe removal of the blade guard and splitter.Dado and rabbet cuts are considered Non-Thru Cuts because the blade does not pro-trude above the top face of the wood stock.Always remember to reinstall the blade guardand splitter after performing a non-thru cut.

Perpendicular: Intersecting and forming rightangles; at right angles to the vertical and hori-zontal planes. i.e. the blade is perpendicular tothe table surface.

Push Paddle: Safety aid used to push a piece ofwood stock through a cutting operation.

Push Stick: Safety aid used to push a piece ofwood stock through a cutting operation.Usually used when rip cutting.

Rabbet: Cutting operation that creates an L-shaped channel along the edge of wood stock.

Splitter: Metal plate attached to the back of theblade guard that maintains the kerf opening inthe wood when performing a cutting operation.

Standard Kerf: 1⁄8" gap made with a standardblade.

Straightedge: A tool used to check the flatness,parallelness, or consistency of a surface(s).

Thru-Sawing: A sawing operation where thewood stock thickness is completely sawnthrough. Proper blade height usually allows 1⁄4"of the top of the blade to extend above thewood stock.

Thin Kerf: 3⁄32" gap made with a thin kerf blade.

Rip Cut: A cut made along grain of the wood.

Sacrificial Fence: A piece of wood attached tothe face of the rip fence that is designed toextend the fence face away from the metal por-tion of the fence. Used primarily when makingrabbet cuts with a dado blade.

SECTION 2: CIRCUIT REQUIREMENTS

220V Single-Phase 220V Three-Phase

G5959 Only:The Model G5959 has a 5 H.P., 3450 R.P.M.motor which requires a 220V single-phase circuit.The cord set included does not have a plug, asthe style of plug you require will depend upon thetype of service you currently have or plan toinstall. The motor will safely draw about 30 ampsat 220V under load. If you operate the ModelG5959 on any circuit that is already close to itscapacity, it might blow a fuse or trip a circuitbreaker. However, if an unusual load does notexist, and power failure still occurs, have the cir-cuit inspected by a qualified electrician.

In preparing to connect the Model G5959 to yourexisting or new circuit, it will be necessary to con-nect a plug that matches your 220V receptacle. Ifyou will be installing a new receptacle and plug,we recommend using a NEMA-style 6L-30 plugand outlet shown in Figure 4.

The Model G5959 should be fused at 30 amps.Fusing at amperage ratings higher than 30 ampswill not adequately protect the circuit. Make surethat existing electrical wires are capable of han-dling a 30 amp current. If unsure, seek the assis-tance of a qualified electrician.

G9957 Only:The Model G9957 has a 71⁄2 H.P., 3450 R.P.M.motor which requires a 220V three-phase circuit.The cord set enclosed does not have a plug, asthe style of plug you require will depend upon thetype of service you currently have or plan to install.The motor will safely draw about 22 amps at 220Vunder load. If you operate the Model G9957 onany circuit that is already close to its capacity, itmight blow a fuse or trip a circuit breaker.However, if an unusual load does not exist andpower failure still occurs, have the circuit inspect-ed by a qualified electrician.

In preparing to connect the Model G9957 to yourexisting or new circuit, it will be necessary to con-nect a plug that matches your 220V receptacle. Ifyou will be installing a new receptacle and plug,we recommend using a HBL2711 30A plug andoutlet shown in Figure 5.

The Model G9957 should be fused at 30 amps.Fusing at amperage ratings higher than 30 ampswill not adequately protect the circuit. Make surethat existing electrical wires are capable of han-dling a 30 amp current. If unsure, seek the assis-tance of a qualified electrician.

We do not recommend the use of extension cordson 220V equipment. It is much better to arrangethe placement of your equipment and the installedwiring to eliminate the need for extension cords.Should it be necessary to use an extension, makesure the cord is rated Hard Service (grade S) orbetter. Refer to the chart in Section 1: Safety todetermine the minimum gauge for the extensioncord. The extension cord must also contain aground wire and plug pin. Always repair or replaceextension cords when they become worn or dam-aged.

Extension Cords

A wiring diagram is provided at the back of thismanual should it be necessary to repair or revisethe wiring. Always utilize a qualified electricianwhen doing any electrical work on this equipment.

Wiring Diagram

We have covered some basic electricalrequirements for the safe operation of yourmachine. These requirements are not nec-essarily comprehensive. You must be surethat your particular electrical configurationcomplies with local and state codes.Ensure compliance by checking with yourlocal municipality or a licensed electrician.

Grounding

In the event of a malfunction or breakdown,grounding provides a path of least resistance forelectric current to reduce the risk of electric shock.This tool is equipped with an electric cord havingan equipment-grounding conductor which mustbe properly connected to a grounding plug. Theplug must be plugged into a matching outlet thatis properly installed and grounded in accordancewith all local codes and ordinances.

Improper connections of the electrical-groundingconductor can result in risk of electric shock. Theconductor with green or green and yellow stripedinsulation is the electrical-grounding conductor. Ifrepair or replacement of the electric cord or plugis necessary, do not connect the equipmentgrounding conductor to a live terminal.

This equipment must begrounded. Verify that anyexisting electrical outletand circuit you intend toplug into is actuallygrounded. Under no cir-cumstances should thegrounding pin from anythree-pronged plug beremoved. Serious injurymay occur.

SECTION 3: INTRODUCTION

We are proud to offer the Grizzly Model G5959/9957 12" Table Saw. The Model G5959/9957 ispart of a growing Grizzly family of fine woodwork-ing machinery. When used according to theguidelines set forth in this manual, you can expectyears of trouble-free, enjoyable operation andproof of Grizzly’s commitment to customer satis-faction.

The Model G5959/9957 is an industrial gradetable saw intended for professional use. Featuresinclude cast iron trunnions, 4" dust port, triple V-belt drive, dual arbor (5⁄8" and 1"), cam lever fence,magnetic switch, and a 5 H.P., 220V, single-phase motor (71⁄2 H.P., 220V, 3-phase motor forG9957).

All running parts operate on shielded ball bear-ings and require no maintenance for the life of thebearings. We also offer many accessories for thetable saws including blades, outfeed rollers, asliding table and a mobile base. Please refer toour current catalog for prices and ordering infor-mation.

The Model G5959/9957 is shipped from the man-ufacturer in a carefully packed carton. If you dis-cover the machine is damaged after you havesigned for delivery, please call Customer Serviceimmediately for advice.

When you are completely satisfied with the con-dition of your shipment, you should inventory itsparts.

The G5959/9957 is aheavy machine, 1000lbs. shipping weight.DO NOT over-exertyourself while unpack-ing or moving yourmachine – you will needassistance and powerequipment. Serious per-sonal injury may occurif safe moving methodsare not followed.

Make sure floor structureis capable of supportingthe combined weight ofthe machine parts andpeople.

Some metal parts mayhave sharp edges onthem after they areformed. Please examinethe edges of all metalparts before handlingthem. Failure to do socould result in injury.

Clean up

The table and other unpainted parts of the ModelG5959/9957 are coated with a waxy grease thatprotects them from corrosion during shipment.Clean this grease off with a solvent cleaner or cit-rus-based degreaser such as Grizzly’s G7895Degreaser. Do not use chlorine-based solvents –if you happen to splash some onto a painted sur-face, you will ruin the finish.

Site Considerations

1. Floor Load: Your Model G5959/9957 repre-sents a large weight load in a small footprint.Most commercial floors are suitable for thesaw. Some residential floors may requireadditional bracing to support both machineand operator.

2. Working Clearances: Consider existing andanticipated needs, size of material to beprocessed through each machine, andspace for auxiliary stands, work table orother machinery when establishing a loca-tion for your table saw.

3. Lighting and Outlets: Lighting should bebright enough to eliminate shadows and pre-vent eye strain. Electrical circuits should bededicated or large enough to handle amper-age requirements. Outlets should be locatednear each machine so power or extensioncords are clear of high-traffic areas. Observelocal electrical codes for proper installationof new lighting, outlets, or circuits.

Make your shop “childsafe.” Ensure that yourworkplace is inaccessibleto youngsters by closingand locking all entranceswhen you are away. Neverallow visitors in your shopwhen assembling, adjust-ing or operating equip-ment.

Do not use gasoline orother petroleum-basedsolvents. They have lowflash points which makethem extremely flamma-ble. A risk of explosionand burning exists ifthese products areused. Serious personalinjury may occur if thiswarning is ignored.

Do not smoke while usingsolvents. A risk of explo-sion or fire exists and mayresult in serious personalinjury.

Many of the solventscommonly used to cleanmachinery can be toxicwhen inhaled or ingest-ed. Always work in well-ventilated areas far frompotential ignition sourceswhen dealing with sol-vents. Use care when dis-posing of waste rags andtowels to be sure they donot create fire or environ-mental hazards.

SECTION 4: ASSEMBLYBeginning Assembly

Most of your Model G5959/9957 has been assem-bled at the factory, but some parts must beassembled or installed after delivery. We haveorganized the assembly process into steps.Please follow along in the order presented here.

TOOLS REQUIRED: You will need a high qualitysquare, a long straightedge, 10mm, 12mm, 14mmopen end wrenches and a 3mm Allen® wrench.

Extension Wings

Inspect the extension wings for burrs or foreignmaterial that may inhibit assembly. The matingedges of the wings and table must be clean,smooth, and flat. Use a wire brush or file if nec-essary to clean up the edges.

1. Attach the left wing to the table using thethree hex head bolts and flat washers pro-vided. Adjust the wing reasonably flush withthe table. Do not tighten the bolts.

2. Attach the right wing to the table using thethree hex head bolts and flat washers pro-vided. Adjust the wing reasonably flush withthe table. Do not tighten the bolts.

3. Align the top of the wing flush with the tabletop directly above the front bolt, and tightenthe front bolt. The front edge of the extensionwing should also be flush with the front edgeof the table.

4. Raise or lower the rear of the extension winguntil the middle of the wing is flush with thetable top. Tighten the middle bolt.

NOTICEThe right and left wings are not the same.The left wing has two tapped holes on theoutside edge, the right has a tapped hole onthe front and back edge. If the wings are notinstalled in their correct location, the fencecannot be attached.

Masking Tape

5. Raise or lower the rear of the wing until thewing and table are flush. Tighten the bolt.Any adjustment at this point should be mini-mal.

6. Check flushness at the front bolt and read-just if necessary.

7. Repeat Steps 3-4 for the other extensionwing.

8. Now, check the alignment of the table andboth wings with a straightedge. The straight-edge should run flat across both wings andthe table top. If the straightedge contactsboth wings and the table evenly, you are fin-ished with this section. If it does not, contin-ue to Step 9.

9. If the extension wings tilt up or down at theoutside edges, remove the wings and shimthem with masking tape as shown in Figure7.

a. If the wings tilt down, stick layers of mask-ing tape under each bolt near the bottomedge of the wing and retighten.

b. If the wing tilts up, apply layers of maskingtape above each bolt near the top edge ofthe wing and retighten. Allow tape toextend above the table surface and trimwith a sharp knife after final assembly.

10. Replace the wings and check again.

Fence Rails

1. Locate the rear fence rail (the shorter of thetwo rails).

2. Attach the rear rail to the table top using thespacers, hex bolts and lock washers sup-plied as shown in Figure 8. Place a combi-nation square set to 15⁄32" at the edge of thetable, and adjust the rail so it is consistently15⁄32" below the top of the table.

3. Attach the front rail to the table top using thehex socket flathead screws as shown inFigure 9. Place a combination square set at25⁄32", at the edge of the table, and adjust therail so it is consistently 25⁄32" below the top ofthe table.

4. Attach the square fence tube to the front railusing the hex bolts and lock washers asshown in Figure 10A.

5. Attach the fence and slide across the lengthof the rails to ensure smooth, accurate fencemovement.

Installing Saw Blade

Motor Bracket

Please review this section even if your saw bladecame pre-installed. To install the blade:

1. Remove the table insert to gain access to thearbor.

2. Remove the nut and outer arbor flange fromthe arbor.

3. Place the blade on the arbor, making surethat it seats firmly against the inner arborflange. Ensure that the top blade teeth arefacing the front of the saw.

4. Replace the outer arbor flange and rethreadthe arbor nut.

5. Hand tighten the nut and snug with the arborwrench included with the saw. DO NOTovertighten.

IMPORTANT: Make sure the blade is installedwith the teeth facing the front of the saw.

To install the guard support shaft:

1. Push the threaded end of the shaft throughthe hole in the back of the saw (Figure 10B)until the shoulder on the shaft stops it.

2. Secure with the hex nut and washer.

The saw blade is extremely sharp. Use extracare when handling the blade or workingnear it. Serious injury is possible.

2. Set a machinist’s square against the face ofthe blade guard/splitter. Slightly rotate therear bracket to adjust the face of the bladeguard perpendicular to the table top asshown in Figure 13.

Blade Guard/Splitter1. Slip the blade guard/splitter over the mount-

ing bolts as shown in Figure 12. The wash-ers should be between the bolt head and theslots. Tighten the bolts to secure the bladeguard/splitter.

Your saw comes from the factory with a red motorbracket designed to protect the motor assemblyduring shipping. Remove the bracket shown inFigure 11.

4. If the blade guard/splitter is to the right of theblade as shown in Figure 15, simply addwashers between the splitter and frontmounting bracket, and adjust the rear splittersupport as shown in Figure 16.

3. Next, set a straightedge against the face ofthe saw blade and the blade guard/splitter asshown in Figure 14. If the blade guard/split-ter is properly aligned, please skip ahead tothe “Table Insert” instructions; otherwise,continue with the next step.

8. The arbor bracket and motor pulley needsadjusting. Loosen the cap screw and thesetscrew as shown in Figure 17, and slowlyslide the arbor bracket towards the end of theshaft. Only move the arbor bracket a dis-tance equal to the amount of misalignmentbetween the blade and splitter, or a littlemore. You can always adjust the splitter backto the left with washers. Tighten the capscrew and setscrew securely.

9. Moving the arbor bracket moves the V-beltsand pulleys out of alignment, so adjustmentof the motor pulley is required. Simply loosenthe setscrew and slowly slide the pulleytoward the end of the motor shaft. Once theV-belts are back into alignment, tighten thesetscrew securely.

10. Recheck guard alignment to the blade and tothe table top. Adjust as necessary and tight-en down all the bolts before use. If the bladeguard is properly aligned, re-attach the table,making sure there is adequate blade clear-ance through all blade adjustments.

11. Adjust the blade to 45° and raise and lower itthrough the full range. Re-adjust the blade to90° and raise and lower it through the fullrange. There should be no contact betweenthe base and the table insert or any otherpart of the saw. If there is, repeat Steps 7-9.

5. Recheck guard alignment to the blade and tothe table top. Adjust as necessary and tight-en all the bolts before use. If the blade guardis properly aligned, please skip ahead tostep 10; otherwise, continue with the nextstep.

6. If the splitter is positioned to the left of theblade, alignment cannot be achieved bywasher placement. Adjustment of the frontsupport bracket is required as shown inFigure 16. Loosen the (2) adjustment screwsand move left or right.

7. If this adjustment does not allow enoughmovement of the splitter, remove the tableand wings, and set them to one side.

Table Insert

The table insert provides access to the blade andarbor when removed. When in place, the insertprovides support for materials being cut.

1. Disconnect the power cord from the outlet.

2. Ensure that all four setscrews are firmly incontact with the table casting.

3. Using a 6mm hex wrench, raise or lowereach of the four setscrews (Figure 18) untilthe insert is flush with the table top.

4. Now make sure the blade will not come intocontact with table insert. Position the blade at90°, then raise and lower the blade through itsfull range of motion. Also, rotate the bladewhile doing this, making sure that the bladenever contacts any part of the table insert. Dothe same with the blade in the 45° position.Wear leather gloves while rotating the bladeto prevent being cut.

5. Be sure to review the “Blade Alignment,”instructions before operating the saw.

SECTION 5: ADJUSTMENTS

Blade Height

Blade Tilt1. Set your blade angle at zero as shown on the

angle indicator on the front of the saw andraise the blade several inches above thetable.

2. Place a machinist’s square flat on the tableand slide it along side the blade. The squareshould contact the blade evenly from bottomto top. Make sure that a blade tooth does notobstruct the movement of the square.

3. Adjust the handwheel until the square isflush with the blade. Loosen the tilt indicatorarrow, set to zero, and retighten. Loosen andadjust the stop bolt on the left side of thefront trunnion (Figure 20) to allow a 90° stoppoint.

4. Turn the blade angle handwheel until theangle indicator points at the desired angle.

5. Tighten the handwheel locking knob.

6. Repeat Steps 1-6 for setting the blade to 45°and adjust the 45° stop bolt on the right sideof the front trunnion as shown in Figure 20.Use the 45° side of a combo square or abevel gauge set at 45°.

When preparing to operate your table saw, youshould adjust the blade height to approximately1⁄4" above the surface of the material you plan oncutting. The handwheel at the front of the sawadjusts blade height. To adjust blade height:

1. Loosen the locking knob at the center of theblade height handwheel.

2. Using a sample of the material you plan oncutting as a gauge, turn the handwheel untilthe blade reaches its intended height.

3. Retighten the locking knob.

4. Recheck your blade height with the samplematerial and re-adjust, if necessary.

5. The difference between the two measure-ments must be equal to or less than 0.004".

6. If the difference is greater than 0.004",loosen the four table mounting bolts as seenin Figure 23 and adjust the table slightly.Repeat Steps 1-5 until satisfactory. Do notforget to tighten the table mounting boltswhen finished.

7. Now check to see if the blade remains paral-lel to the miter slot when tilted to 45°.

8. Tilt the blade to 45° and repeat Steps 1-5. Ifthe blade is still parallel to the miter slot, con-tinue on to the “Miter Gauge” instructions.Otherwise, continue with the next step.

9. If the blade was parallel to the miter slot at90° but not at 45°, the table will need to beshimmed with metal shim stock. The shimsare placed under the table over each of thefour table mounting bolts as shown in Figure23.

Miter Slot to BladeYour table saw will give the best results if themiter slot and rip fence are adjusted parallel tothe blade. If they are not exactly parallel, yourcuts and finished work will be lower in quality, butmore important, it increases the risk of kickback.Take the time to adjust your table saw properly. Afew minutes now will be time well spent.

1. Disconnect the power cord from the out-let. Use a piece of tape to mark the blade inthe gullet between the 2 teeth closest to thetable.

2. Use an adjustable square to measure thedistance from the mark on the blade to theedge of the miter slot as shown in Figure 21.

3. Rotate the blade 180°.

4. Measure the distance from the mark on theblade to the edge of the miter slot as shownin Figure 22.

10. Refer to Figures 24 and 25, for shim place-ment. If the distance of A is longer than B,shim(s) will need to be placed under corners#1 and #2. If the distance of B is longer thanA, shim(s) will need to be placed under cor-ners #3 and #4. Very thin shim stock workswell, just make sure they are all the samethickness, and you put an equal numberunder each of the two corners.

11. Tighten down one bolt a small amount andthen move on to each of the others, tighten-ing each down the same amount. Continueto rotate through the bolts, tightening them alittle each time until they are all secure.

12. Now recheck the blade to the miter slot at90° and 45° by repeating Steps 1-5. If thedistance of A and B are equal to or less than0.004" at both 90° and 45°, continue to the“Miter Gauge” instructions. If the distancesare still off by more than 1⁄64", repeat Steps 9-12.

13. Once you feel you have the miter slot adjust-ed to the blade, recheck all measurementsand be sure the table mounting bolts aresecure. Repeat Step 10 in Section 4:Assembly, “Blade Guard/Splitter.” Also, ifyou ever remove the table in the future, besure to make note of shim placements andre-assemble exactly how it came apart.

Rip Fence

The rip fence included with your ModelG5959/9957 12" Table Saw is designed to pro-vide excellent ripping accuracy when properlyadjusted. There are three main adjustments toconcern yourself with: square, parallelism andclamping pressure.

SQUAREPlace a machinist’s square against the side of thefence. If the square does not remain flush againstboth the fence and the table, adjust the nylonscrews (Figure 27) on top of the bracket at thefront of the fence until square.

Miter Gauge

To adjust the miter gauge so it is perpendicular tothe saw blade:

1. Loosen the lock knob on the miter gauge andplace a square against the face of the miterbody and the blade.

2. Adjust the miter body until there is no spacebetween the square and the blade. Tightenthe lock knob.

3. With the stop link in the up position, loosenthe jam nut (Figure 26) and adjust the stopscrew until it is seated against the stop link.

4. Now loosen the setscrew on the left frontside of the miter bar, adjust the pointer to 90°and tighten the setscrew.

5. To adjust to 45°, follow Steps 1-4 using anadjustable square set to 45°.

6. After rotating the miter body from 45° to 90°and back a few times, double-check youradjustments at both angles to assure thatyou have accurately set your miter gauge.

CLAMPING PRESSUREThe fence-clamping mechanism has been adjust-ed at the factory to provide the right amount ofclamping pressure to hold your fence securely.Should it eventually need adjustment:

1. Loosen the clamping arm.

2. Remove the fence from the saw and adjustthe setscrews equally on the rear side of thefront bracket as shown in Figure 28.

3. Replace the fence and check the clampingstrength. Re-adjust until proper pressure isensured.

PARALLELISMAlign the fence alongside the miter slot as shownin Figure 29, and lock it down. If the fence is notperfectly parallel to the miter slot:

1. Release the clamping mechanism.

2. Remove the fence from the saw and adjustthe setscrews on the rear side of the frontbracket as shown in Figure 28. Make veryminor adjustments and recheck by reclamp-ing the fence along the miter slot after eachadjustment. Keep in mind that a small turn ofthe setscrew can make a large differenceover the length of the fence. Be sure clamp-ing pressure is still adequate.

Blade Alignment

The blade position can be adjusted slightly incase it contacts the table insert when raised ortilted. This adjustment can be made by movingthe table, the whole trunnion assemble, or by justmoving the arbor bracket. Try adjusting by mov-ing the table first as this is the easiest way. If thatdoesn’t work, try adjusting the whole trunionassembly. If that still doesn’t work, try moving thearbor bracket.

To adjust the blade position by moving the table:

1. Disconnect plug from power source.

2. Loosen the four table mounting bolts.

3. Nudge the table to either the left or rightdepending on where the blade is hitting thesaw. Tighten all mounting bolts.

4. If the blade is still contacting the insert,repeat Steps 1-3. Check all other adjust-ments.

5. Recheck the blade to miter slot adjustments,and adjust as necessary.

To adjust the blade position by moving the trun-nion:

1. Disconnect plug from power source.

To adjust the blade position by moving the arborbracket:

1. Disconnect plug from power source.

2. Remove the table and wings and set them toone side.

3. Loosen the blade adjustment cap screwshown in Figure 30B.

4. To adjust the arbor bracket, loosen the capscrew and the setscrew. Slowly slide thearbor bracket towards the end of the shaft.

5. Moving the arbor bracket moves the V-beltsand pulleys out of alignment, so adjustmentof the motor pulley is required. Simply loosenthe setscrew and slowly slide the pulleytowards the end of the motor shaft. Once theV-belts are back into alignment, tighten thesetscrew securely.

6. Reattach the table, making sure there is ade-quate blade clearance through all bladeadjustments. Recheck guard alignment tothe blade and to the table top. Adjust as nec-essary and tighten down all the bolts beforeuse.

7. If the blade is still contacting the insert,repeat Steps 1-6. Check all other adjust-ments.

8. Recheck the blade to miter slot adjustments,and adjust as necessary.

2. Remove the table and wings and set them toone side.

3. Loosen the four trunnion mounting bolts asshown in Figure 30A, and nudge to eitherthe left or right depending on where theblade is hitting the saw.

4. Reattach the table, making sure there isadequate blade clearance through all bladeadjustments. Recheck guard alignment tothe blade and to the table top. Adjust as nec-essary and tighten down all the bolts beforeuse.

5. If the blade is still contacting the insert,repeat Steps 1-4. Check all other adjust-ments.

6. Recheck the blade to miter slot adjustments,and adjust as necessary.

Pre-Run Check Test Run

1. Face the table saw and stand to the left ofthe blade path.

2. With one finger on the START button andone finger on the STOP button, turn the sawon. Be ready to turn it off in case of mishap.

3. Watch and listen to the saw. Note whetherthere are any unusual sounds or excessivevibrations.

SECTION 6: OPERATIONS

Before you begin to use your Model G5959/995712" Table Saw, you should give it a thoroughinspection. While making your inspection, askyourself the following questions:

1. Are all the fasteners tight?

2. Is the blade mounted correctly?

3. Is the saw stable?

4. Is it wired properly?

5. Is your electrical system properly config-ured?

6. Have you checked your work piece for obvi-ous defects?

7. Are the V-belts properly tensioned and thepulleys properly aligned?

8. Is the guard assembly installed and func-tional?

9. Have you checked the saw blade clearancewhen it is adjusted to varying angles anddepths?

10. Have you read all warnings and directionsregarding the operation of this machine?

Disconnect power to themachine when perform-ing any maintenance,assembly or adjust-ments. Failure to do thismay result in seriouspersonal injury.

4. If anything appears abnormal, immediatelyturn off the saw and fix the problem. If aproblem exists that is beyond the scope ofthis manual, call our service department.

5. If the saw is behaving normally, turn it off andprepare to make a cut according to theinstructions outlined in the following sec-tions.

Blade Selection

Choosing the correct blade for the job is essentialfor the safe and efficient use of your table saw.Ignoring this important step could result in dam-age to the saw and serious injury to the operator.Documented below are the most common sawblades and their uses.

1. Rip Blade: Used for cutting with the grain.Typically, 14" rip blades have between 30-40teeth, flat-top ground tooth profile and largegullets to allow for large chip removal. SeeFigure 31.

3. Combination Blade: Used for cutting withand across the grain. A compromisebetween a rip blade and a cross-cut blade, a12" combination blade will typically havebetween 50-60 teeth, an alternate top beveland flat or alternate top bevel and raker toothprofile. The teeth are arranged in groups offive. The gullets are small and shallow withinthe groups of five teeth, similar to a cross-cutblade; then large and deep between thegroups, like a ripping blade. See Figure 33.

2. Cross-cut Blade: Used for cutting acrossthe grain. 12" cross-cut blades havebetween 60-80 teeth, alternate top bevel orsteep alternate top bevel tooth profiles, smallhook angle and a shallow gullet. See Figure32.

4. Plywood Blade: Used for cutting plywood orveneers. A 12" plywood blade will have 60-80 teeth, a steep alternate top bevel toothprofile and very shallow gullet. See Figure34.

5. Thin-kerf: Most types of saw blades areavailable in a thin-kerf style. Used primarilyto minimize stock wastage. It is recommend-ed thin-kerf blades be used in conjunctionwith a blade stabilizer to reduce blade wob-ble. Note: Most blade guards/splitters arethicker than most thin-kerf blades. Makesure the stock will pass by the guard/splitterbefore beginning a cut.

6. Dado Blades: There are two types of dadoblades: stack and wobble. Stack dadoes areexpensive and time consuming to set up butleave a clean and smooth finish. Stackdadoes are used for fine furniture and cabi-net making. Wobble dadoes are inexpensiveand easy to set up, but leave a rough finish.

7. Moulding Heads: A moulding head is a cut-terhead that attaches to the arbor and holdsindividual moulding knives. We do not rec-ommend their use. They are very dangerousand require training beyond the scope of thismanual.

This section on blade selection is by no meanscomprehensive. Always follow the saw blademanufacturer's recommendations to assure safeand efficient operation of your table saw.

Triple Chip Blade

CrosscuttingCrosscutting means cutting across the grain ofthe wood. In wood products without grain (i.e.MDF, particleboard) it simply means cuttingacross the width of the stock.

Crosscuts are made with the miter gauge. Thereare two miter gauge slots in the table top. Use theone that works best for the piece being crosscut.To make a crosscut using the miter gauge:

1. Inspect the board for soundness. You do notnecessarily need a square edge to crosscutwith accuracy.

2. Inspect the miter gauge. Is it properly set andtight? Move the rip fence completely out ofthe way.

3. Turn on the saw and allow it to come to fullspeed.

4. Hold the workpiece firmly against the face ofthe miter gauge and ease it into the blade asshown in Figure 36.

5. Turn off the saw and allow the blade to cometo a full stop.

Ripping

Ripping means to cut with the grain of the wood.In other materials such as MDF or plywood, rip-ping simply means to cut lengthwise. To rip aboard:

1. Inspect the board for soundness. You willneed a straight edge to rip with accuracy.Your workpiece may need to be jointed flatbefore attempting to cut on the table saw.

2. Set the rip fence to the desired distance fromthe blade. IF YOU ARE MAKING NARROWCUTS, USE A PUSH-STICK. It is unsafe toput your hands close to the blade. A push-stick pattern has been included in this man-ual on Page 45, or you can purchase theG3445 or G1411 push stick from the Grizzlycatalog. Use them to hold the workpieceagainst the table and fence, and push the

workpiece fully past the blade. When a smallwidth is to be ripped and a push-stick can-not be safely put between the blade and ripfence, rip a larger piece to obtain the desiredpiece.

3. Turn on the saw and allow it to reach fullspeed. Place the trued edge of the boardagainst the rip fence. Feed the workpieceslowly and evenly into the blade. Do notstand behind the board as shown in Figure37.

Stand out of the line of potential kickback.Hold the workpiece firmly against the fenceand table. Do not allow your fingers to getclose to the blade! Do not reach over theblade to off-load the workpiece.Never attempt to rip a board that does not

have one perfectly straight edge on it.Always run the straight edge of the boardagainst the rip fence. Failure to do thiscould result in kickback and serious per-sonal injury.

Dado OperationsIn addition to its ability to rip and crosscut lumber,the table saw is also an invaluable tool for creat-ing a variety of dadoes. These non-through cutscan be created with a regular saw blade or withspecially-designed dado blade as shown inFigure 38.

Always use push sticks, featherboards,push paddles and other safety accessorieswhenever possible to increase safety andcontrol during operations which require theblade guard and splitter to be removed fromthe saw. ALWAYS replace the blade guardafter dadoing is complete.

Proper dado operations will differ depending onthe blade system you choose. Consult theinstructions included with your dado blades fordirections regarding attachment and adjustment.To use a dado blade:

1. Ensure that the saw is switched off and dis-connected from its power source.

2. Remove the table insert, splitter guard, regu-lar saw blade, and 1" arbor. Install the long5⁄8" dado arbor.

3. Attach and adjust the dado blade system asrecommended in the dado blade instruc-tions.

4. Install the dado table insert.

5. Raise the blade system up to the desireddepth of the dado. Make sure the dado bladewill not cut through the work piece.

6. If dadoing along the length of your work-piece, adjust the distance between the fenceand the inside edge of the blade to suit yourneeds. When cutting across the wood grain,use the miter gauge as a guide while dado-ing. Remember: never use the fence as astop in conjunction with your miter gauge.

7. Reconnect the saw to the power source.

8. Using a scrap as a test piece, switch on thesaw and take a pass over the dado blade.

9. If the cut is satisfactory, repeat with your fin-ish stock.

10. Reinstall the blade guard.

Never allow hands or arms to be above orbehind the saw blade. Should kickbackoccur, your hands and arms can be pulledinto the saw blade. Serious injury willresult.

Dado operations present very real hazardsrequiring proper procedures to avoid seri-ous injury. The chance of kickback isalways greater when dado blades are usedso extra precautions must be used. Anymovement of the stock away from the fencewill cause kickback. Be certain that stock isflat and straight. Failure to follow thesewarnings could result in serious personalinjury.

Never perform a through cut operation witha dado blade. A dado blade was designed tomake non-through cuts only. Failure to fol-low these directions could result in seriousinjury.

Dadoing operations can also be accomplishedusing a conventional saw blade. To create a sin-gle-blade dado:

1. Clearly mark the width of the dado cut onyour workpiece. Include marks on the edgeof your workpiece so you can clearly identifyyour intended cut while the material is layingflat on the saw table.

2. Set the blade height to the depth of cut youwish to create.

3. If the dado runs the length of the material,adjust the fence so the blade is aligned withthe inside of your dado channel as shown inFigure 39.

4. Turn on your saw and make the first cut.

5. Turn off the saw and re-adjust the fence sothe blade is aligned with the other edge ofthe intended dado channel. Be sure to keepthe cuts within your marks; otherwise, yourdado will be too large.

6. Turn on the saw and make a second cut.

7. Move toward the center of the dado with yoursubsequent cuts until the dado is complete.

8. Reinstall the blade guard.

In addition to its ability to create a variety ofdadoes, this table saw can be used to cut L-shaped rabbets. These cuts can be created witha regular saw blade or with specially designedstacking or wobbling dado blades.

Proper rabbet operations will differ depending onthe blade system you choose. Consult theinstructions included with your dado blades fordirections regarding attachment and adjustment.To use a dado blade for rabbeting operations:

1. Rabbet cutting on the edge of a piece ofstock requires the use of a sacrificial fenceattachment as shown in Figure 40. Thesacrificial fence can be made from a pieceof wood that is as long as the metal fenceand 3⁄4" thick. Once the sacrificial fence hasbeen cut, attach it to the metal fence withscrews or clamps, making sure they are allsecure and tight.

6. Using a scrap as a test piece, switch on thesaw and take a pass over the dado blade.

7. If the cut is satisfactory, repeat with your fin-ish stock.

8. Re-install the blade guard.

Always use push sticks, featherboards,push paddles and other safety accessorieswhenever possible to increase safety andcontrol during operations which requirethat the blade guard and splitter must beremoved from the saw. ALWAYS replace theblade guard after dadoing is complete.

Instructions on using moulding heads havebeen intentionally left out. They are verydangerous when not used properly.Considerable skill and training beyond thescope of this manual are required to safelyoperate a moulding head. Serious personalinjury could result if this warning is not fol-lowed.

Rabbeting operations can also be accomplishedusing a conventional saw blade. To create a sin-gle-blade rabbet:

1. Clearly mark the width of the rabbet cut onyour workpiece. Include marks on the edgeof your workpiece so you can clearly identifyyour intended cut while the material is layingflat on the saw table.

2. Set the blade height to the depth of cut youwish to create.

3. If the rabbet runs the length of the material,adjust the fence so the blade is aligned withthe inside of your rabbet channel.

4. Turn on your saw and make the first cut.

5. Turn off the saw and re-adjust the fence sothat the next cut will remove another portionof the wood stock between the inside edge ofthe rabbet and the edge of the wood.

6. Turn on the saw and make a second cut.

7. Continue to re-adjust the blade and cut untilthe entire rabbet is made.

8. Re-install the blade guard.

SECTION 7: MAINTENANCE

V-BeltTo ensure optimum power transmission from themotor to the blade, the V-belts must be in goodcondition and operate under proper tension.When replacing V-belts, it is important to replaceall four at the same time - even if they do not allappear worn.

Belt tension should be checked at least every 3months; more often if using the table saw inten-sively.

The V-belts are accessed through the cavity onthe right side of the saw. They link the arbor andmotor pulleys. To check V-belt tension:

1. Squeeze the center of each V-belt.

2. Note the amount of deflection. Deflectionshould be approximately 3⁄4" as shown inFigure 42.

Regular periodic maintenance on your ModelG5959/9957 will ensure its optimum performance.Make a habit of inspecting your machine eachtime you use it. Check for the following conditionsand repair or replace when necessary:

1. Loose mounting bolts.

2. Worn switch.

3. Worn or damaged cords and plugs.

4. Damaged V-belt.

5. Any other condition that could hamper thesafe operation of this machine.

6. Inspect blades for damage.

7. Guard alignment and operation.

General

Disconnect power to themachine when perform-ing any maintenance orrepairs. Failure to do thismay result in seriouspersonal injury.

The shielded ball bearings in the motor andthroughout the Model G5959/9957 require no fur-ther lubrication during their lifetime. When they dowear out, replacements can be obtained throughthe Grizzly Parts Department.

Lubricate the areas indicated below every 12months.

1. Blade angling trunnions. These should belubricated with 6 or 7 drops of light machineoil.

2. Blade height trunnion. This should also belubricated with 6 or 7 drops of light machineoil.

3. The two worm gears should be lubricatedwith an automotive wheel bearing grease.The blade angle worm gear is not shown inFigure 43.

These points can be reached by removing thetable. Check all adjustments when finished lubri-cating.

LubricationTo adjust V-belt tension:

1. Loosen the motor mount bolt.

2. Shift the motor up or down to increase ordecrease the V-belt tension. Tighten themotor mount bolt.

3. Check the V-belt tension again. Ensure thatthe motor pulley and arbor pulley are linedup.

To replace the V-belts:

1. Remove the blade.

2. Adjust the arbor so it is up all the way and inthe 90° position.

3. Place a board under the motor and loosenthe motor mount bolt. Slowly lower the arboruntil the motor rests on the board, allowingthe belts to be loose on the pulleys.

4. Pull off the old V-belts and replace them withnew ones. Have the number from the beltready when calling the service departmentfor replacements.

5. Raise the arbor and remove the board toadjust the V-belt tension.

6. Tighten the motor mount bolt.

Wear safety glasses dur-ing the entire mainte-nance process. Failureto comply may result inserious personal injury.

SYMPTOM

Motor will not start.
