Heatwave
Heatwave explores the contrasting feelings of a sweltering hot day. The first
movement, Hot heads, depicts the tense, stressful atmosphere caused by
stifling heat. The music is spiky, with ever-changing time signatures. Siesta
has a sultry, lazy and passionate mood, although a chilly breeze briefly passes
through the scene. Finally, Scorcher captures some of the fun and energy of an
outdoor get-together, with the players having the freedom to ‘improvise’ their
part.
The work was first performed by Juliette Bausor (flute), Daniel Bates (oboe)
and Simon Lepper (piano) at the Royal Over-Seas League House, London on
15th November 2006.
