DUCT HEATER CONSTRUCTION
ALL HEATRIX DUCT HEATERS ARE BUILT TOCONFORM TO U. L. AND N. E. C. REQUIREMENTS
AND ARE LISTED FOR ZERO CLEARANCE
HEATING ELEMENTS OPEN COILHeaters shall be built using Type “C” Nichrome wire supported in a ceramic steatite floating bushing. The ceramics are then supported by a galvanized steel frame. Standard spacing for element cross supports is 3 inches on center. Element frame assemblies are then mounted into a galvanized steel wrap. GRADE “A” WIRE IS AvAILABLE WHEN REQUESTED.
OvER TEMPERATURE PROTECTIONAll duct heaters are furnished with an automatic disc type thermal cutout for primary protection, with a manually resetable disc type thermal cutout for secondary protection.
INTERNAL WIRINGAll wiring used shall be U. L. Listed copper105 C stranded wire.
OvER CURRENT PROTECTIONAll heaters shall be fused in accordance with applicable U. L. standards and the national electric code. Circuit fusing is required when a duct heater circuit or circuits exceed 47.9 amps. If the circuit does not exceed 47.9 amps then circuit fusing is not required by code but may be added as a factory installed option.
CONTROLSNumerous control options are available for Heatrix Duct Heaters. All options are listed in this catalog. All components used are U. L./C. S. A. Listed.
CONTRACTORS, MAGNETIC DE-ENERGIZING, DISCONNECTINGAll duct heaters are wired with de-energizing magnetic type contactors, unless specified by customer to be magnetic disconnecting type. (Mercury contactors may be used in lieu of magnetic, but only if specified by customer).
AIRFLOW SAFETY INTERLOCKSAll duct heaters must be provided with one of the following:A) Differential pressure switch (airflow switch which senses from .05” to 12” W. C. +/- .02” W. C.) which is non adjustable. If the pressure in the duct system is less than .07” W. C. we recommend a fan interlocking relay be used in lieu of the pressure switch.B) A fan interlock relay is available in lieu of the standard pressure switch to interlock the heater with the fan circuit.

FIELD WIRINGAll heaters will be furnished with line terminals capable of handling 125% of the connected load. Heaters requiring larger than 500 MCM incoming field feed will be subdivided into smaller feeds to meet U. L. requirements.
CONTROL PANEL CONSTRUCTIONA minimum of 20 gauge galvanized steel is used in construction of all heaters, heavier gauges are used on larger models. Heaters include spot welded construction, false bottom on “M” Models, continuous nickel plated hinged cover for control panels on all models. “M” Models that do not include a door interlock disconnect switch incorporate a spring loaded latching device in the cover assembly.
SPECIAL CONSTRUCTIONRecessed elements for internally lined ducts.Flanged Mounting.Bottom or top mounting in duct.Outdoor enclosures.Modular heaters.HXOB type for mounting directly to the fan discharge.Remote control boxes.
HEATING ELEMENTSHeatrix Heaters use an open coil electric heating element design.Standard elements are made of nickel chromium alloy grade C, which is 60% nickel, 20% chromium and 20% iron. This element has excellent heat resisting properties and is rated up to 1700 degrees fahrenheit. As an option, grade A wire, better known as 80/20 wire, which is 80% nickel and 20% chromium may be used. It is essentially iron free and has rating up to 2100 degrees fahrenheit. Elements are held in place by ceramic steatite floating bushings spot welded into a galvanized steel frame with cross supports no more than 4 inches on center.Elements are terminated with 10-32 zinc plated studs by nuts and bolts interlocked thru ceramics bases. Stainless steel terminals are standard.Unless otherwise specified a watt density of 40-60 watts per square inch is used in the design of Heatrix Heaters. Lower watt density / derated coils are available as an option.

OvER TEMPERATURE PROTECTIONBoth U.L. and N.E.C. require two types of over temperature protection. The primary system is an automatic reset and is designed to de-energize the control circuit of the heater if an air circulation problem arises in the duct system. The secondary or manual reset is designed to de-energize the heater element at a higher temperature in the event of a failure in the primary system. Manual resets can be put back in operation by pressing the reset button found in the heater terminal box. However, the disc must be at a safe temperature before resetting. Manual resets are wired in the power legs.
Primary and secondary over temperature devices should not be bypassed in the field because of cycling or tripping out. These devices are put there for safety reasons. If a heater has a cycling problem the problem should be eliminated. First check installation of heater, air flow, air blockage, and insufficient air. If the problem still persists, call our engineering staff and they will try to resolve any problem you have in the field.
MAGNETIC CONTACTORSMagnetic contactors are standard in al Heatrix Heaters. One, two and three pole contactors are available with control voltages ranging from 24 volts to 277 bolts. 24 volts is standard unless specified differently. All heaters are wired using de-energizing contacts, unless specified. Disconnecting caution must be taken when using de-energizing contactors, One end of each element remains electrically hot unless a safety disconnect serving the heater is off.
MERCURY CONTACTORSMercury contactors are normally used when a control system requires frequent cycles or when quiet operation is essential. Mercury contactors are more durable and have longer life expectancy than magnetic contactors. Holding coil voltages range from 24 volts to 277 volts. Since mercury contactors are position sensitive, it is of the utmost importance that installation is done according to labels found in every Heatrix Heater. Installer must install heater in position of arrow on the heater.

AIRFLOW SWITCHAirflow switches provide the best heater protection against element failure. Airflow switches are of the pressure differential diaphragm operating type. They have proven reliable in many different operations. The air pressure switch has a built in diaphragm that senses static pressure. A pressure level below the setting of the air pressure switch immediately de-energizes the heater. For proper operation of the switch, there must be at least .03” water pressure difference between the inside and outside of the duct system. Adjustable switches are available, but please specify when ordering. Heaters are set up for a POSITIvE PRESSURE blow thru system. If the heater is mounted before the fan supply (draw thru system) A/P switch must be set up for negative pressure.
FAN INTERLOCKING RELAYIf the air pressure switch is not used, a fan interlocking relay is used to comply to U.L. and N.E.C. requirements. The fan relay coil is wired with the first stage of heat. If for any reason the automatic switch opens due to over heating, the fan circuit will continue to operate. The fan relay must be wired to the external fan circuit to comply with U.L. requirements.
TOLL FREE 1-800-537-4820 9 WWW.DELLHEATRIX.COM
CIRCUIT FUSINGBuilt in circuit fusing can be furnished in all Heatrix Heaters. However, if the total load of the heater exceeds 47.9 amps, there must be sub-circuit over current protection provided either in the heater control panel or the remote panel for the heater. Circuit fusing can be used, but is not required by U.L. or N.E.C. when heaters are under 48 amps total load.
The following chart will help you find the maximum KW that can be used on each heater without the mandatory circuit fusing.
MAXIMUM KW PER HEATER THAT DOES NOT REQUIRE CIRCUIT FUSING

TRANSFORMERSTransformers are required when control voltage sources are not available and the line voltage differs from the control voltage. Primary voltages of 120-600 volts are available with secondary or control voltage 24V - 227V. The primary of the transformer is supplied by the line voltage and the secondary of the transformer furnishes the control voltage.
BOTH CLASS 1 AND CLASS 2 TRANSFORMERS ARE USED IN HEATRIX HEATERS.
CLASS 1 - Class 1 transformers are used when control circuit is over 4 steps of heat, when the secondary voltage is greater than 24 volts or when specified. On Class 1 transformers, primary and secondary fuses are included.
CLASS 2 - Class 2 transformers are used when secondary voltage is 24 volts only. A Class 2 transformer can be up to 4 steps of heat. After 4 steps, a Class 1 transformer is used. Secondary fusing on a Class 2 transformer is internal and cannot be replaced. External primary fusing can be included on Class 2 transformers as an option.

DOOR INTERLOCK DISCONNECTSA door interlock disconnect switch prevents the terminal box cover from being opened unless the switch is first turned off. When in the off position the switch will disconnect all electrical circuits. However in some cases where the control voltage is supplied by an outside source the disconnect will not de-energize this circuit. Disconnects may be fused or unfused per your specifications.NOTE: A fused disconnect does not take place of circuit fusing on heaters which draw over 47.9 AMPS.

MINIMUM AIR vELOCITY
For longer coil life and satisfactory heater performance, each heater is labeled with the minimum air velocity. Air velocity should not fall below these figures. If for any reason these figures can not be reached, contact the factory. To find your minimum FPM rating for a heater, follow the steps below.
1) Take outside duct size (H x W) and multiply by 1000.2) Divide that figure by 144.3) Take Watts and divide by figure in step 2. This would give you watts per square feet.4) Go to the chart and find your FPM per inlet air.
EXAMPLE:
Duct size (H x W) 12 x 24 with 20KW
(12 x 24 x 1000)/144 = 2000 square feet 20,000 watts/2000 square feet = 10
10 = 825 FPM at 77º and 1225 FPM at 100ºF
H x W x 1000/144 = square feet watts/square feet = watts per square feet

APPLICATIONSDucted electric heaters can be used as a heat source in many different locations in an air handling system. The features which afford flexibility of application as a heat source are:1 The quick response and ease of control which is provided by the direct conversion of electrical energy to heat energy.2 The ease of installation of a small and compact self- contained unit which requires only electrical connections to power and control circuits.3 The suitability for adaptation in an existing duct system (as well as a new system) to provide additional, supplementary or auxiliary heat for new requirements or present inadequacies-with minimal changes in the existing system.
PRIMARY HEATAn electric heater is considered to supply primary heating when used in conjunction with an air handling unit or air conditioning unit to provide the first or basic heat for the entire system.
PREHEATAn electric heater is considered to provide preheating when it is used to temper air as it enters the air distribution system or in advance of other processes of tempering air. It is often used to raise the temperature of fresh outside air being introduced into the air handling system.
REHEATAn electric heater is considered to provide reheating when it is used in a duct system to raise the temperature of air that has been previously conditioned by other processing. Reheat is often used: a) in individual zone control in air conditioning systems requiring air supplied in different temperatures in various areas of the building; b) in conjunction with cooling coils in the control of humidity. In controlling humidity, it is frequently necessary to remove moisture from the air by lowering the air temperature below the temperature desired to be delivered to the space. Reheating is then used to deliver air at the desired temperature.
SUPPLEMENTAL AUXILIARY HEATAn electric heater is considered to provide supplemental or auxiliary heat when it is used to meet temporary heating load requirements in an air system. The heater may be an emergency or peak-load standby source. Electric heaters are often used with heat pumps to meet peak load demand. An electric duct heater may: a) provide precision heating for proper space control by meeting fluctuating heating load demand; b) maintain desired temperatures in small chambers; and c) have many other applications.
The information and recommendations in this guide are applicable to low velocity (2000 F.P.M. or less) and low pressure (2” w.g. or less) systems.
vELOCITYSince an electric duct heater has a constant BTU output as long as the heater is energized , minimum air velocity through the heater must be maintained in order to : a) achieve good heat transfer, b) prevent overheating and nuisance tripping of the protection devices ; and c) maintain life expectancy.
TOLL FREE 1-800-537-4820 33 WWW.DELLHEATRIX.COM
The average velocity in the duct determined from the formula below should be compared with the minimum velocity recommended by the heater manufacturer for the application. Since most manufacturers relate kilowatts per square foot of duct area and air temperature rise crossing the heater to minimum velocity requirements, the selection can be readily verified in the manufacturer’s catalog date.
vELOCITY = CFM/ DUCT AREAHOWEvER, THE vELOCITY IN THE DUCT SHOULD NOT BE BELOW THE MINIMUM AT ANY POINT ACROSS THE FACE OF THE HEATER.Flow conditions should be studied carefully to determine if localized velocities within the coil face area are likely to be below the minimum.
AIR FLOW DIRECTIONAir flow direction is determined by facing the terminal box side of the duct, and it should be specified for all types of heaters. The manufacturer and installer should know whether the air flow is horizontal ( and to the right or left ) or vertical ( and up or down ) since safety devices are located differently in each case. Furthermore, since terminal boxes vary in width and since space conditions may be limited, the terminal box overhang should be designated as left hand or right hand.
LOCATIONAfter determining the use of a heater, a location in the air system must be selected which will permit satisfactory performance. The heater must be installed in a location having suitable air flow characteristics .Where non-uniform air flow conditions exist at duct fittings, at the equipment connections or at air terminals, etc, minimum lengths of straight runs of duct must be installed before and after the heater. When electric heater are used in preheat or reheat applications in plenums or casings, a special study of the location is recommended. Irregular air flow patterns are often found in the air movement through outside air louvers, filters, mixed air plenums and associated dampers. At fresh air intakes , for example , the air entry should be rain-tight. As a precaution against water damage, it is recommended that the bottom elevation of the electric heater be above the floor. Another important consideration is the safety of individuals entering a plenum or casing chamber. Reasonable provisions for protection should be made and these should include warning signs outside of the electric coil chamber. Other factors to be considered in locating the heaters are: a) Heat loss from the duct before the tempered air reaches its destination.b) The temperature and humidity of the space surrounding the heater. If a section of the duct containing an electric heater is installed in an atmosphere conducive to the collection of moisture either inside the duct or on the outside of the duct, special provisions must be made to insure that moisture does not damage either the heater or the controls.c) The accessibility of the heater and its control panels. Terminal boxes are often integral with the heater and may exceed the height of the duct. The total installation must be designed to accommodate the space and access requirements of this component. Remote control panels may be used where conditions dictate.d) Hazards. To avoid damage and insure safety, special consideration must be given to the proximity of combustible material. Minimum clearance required by the manufacturer or applicable codes, whichever is greater, must be maintained.

CONTROL PANEL
** DO NOT INSULATE OR ENCLOSE HEATER CONTROL BOX**Installation of the slip-in heater consist of cutting an opening in the duct that will clear the heater frame enclosure. Insert heater and fasten to the duct through the mounting holes in the control box.
For installation of the flange mount heater, the heater will have a flange turned out on the duct. This arrangement makes the heater actually become a part of the duct. Air flow and patterns of air flow are very important to the heater working correctly. This is to insure the life of the heating elements and to prevent nuisance tripping. Heatrix Heaters carry a label showing minimum air flow that can be used to operate heaters correctly by showing entering air at two different temperatures. These minimum air velocities or C.F.M. must be in a pattern that covers the entire surface of the heater.
Field wire the supply and control circuit in accordance with national and local electrical codes. Each heater carries a wiring diagram designed for that particular heater showing the manner in which each duct heater must be connected externally to be properly inter-locked with the blower motor (if the blower motor control is not actually a part of the duct heater assembly), unless the duct heater is provided with an integral air pressure switch. INSTALLER MUST TIGHTEN ALL ELECTRICAL CONNECTIONS IN CONTROL PANEL.
The air duct should be installed in accordance with standards of the National Fire Protec-tion Association for the installation of air conditioning and ventilating systems of other than residence-type NFPA #90A and residence-type warm air heating and air conditioning systems NFPA #90B.
INSULATED DUCTWhen duct is lined with insulation inside or outside, please specify. Heatrix Heaters can be built with a recessed control panel, the thickness of the insulation. This recess of the limit control part of the heater will insure the limits being in position to receive the air pattern across the entire surface of the heater. To install this type of heater, cut an opening in the duct and insulation, the required size to re-ceive the wrapper, slip heater in and mount the control box with screws. If fiber duct is used, the same steps must be followed. The heater must be braced with straps or other means of support to prevent the duct from sagging.

To install slip-in heater: cut an opening in the side of the duct. Slide heater in the duct; used control compartments as template to drill mounting screw holes. Attach heater to duct with sheet metal screws. Connect high and low voltage and fan interlock lead wires. Larger heaters may require hanger straps or other suitable reinforcement. Seal joints with duct tape, if required. Concentric power supply knockouts are 7/8”, 1 1/4”, 1 3/8”,1 3/4”. Control knockout if 7/8”.
To install flange heater: at heater location, layout duct work to match heater frame dimensions (W and H). Form mounting flanges on edges of duct. For additional strength, the duct flange should be doubled as show in the drawing. Position heater in duct and attach duct flanges to theater flanges with sheet metal screws. For large heater, the additional with may require hinge strap or other suitable reinforcement. When required, the joint between the duct and heater flanges may be sealed with duct tape. Concentric power supply knock outs are 7/8”, 1 1/4”, 1 3/8”, 1 3/4”. Control knockout if 7/8”.
Duct heaters should be installed at least 2” on either side of an elbow. Turning vanes installed in the elbow will reduce pressure losses and insure that the air velocity is uniformly distributed over the cross section of the duct.
Duct heaters should be installed at least 4’ downstream or upstream from any air conditioner or heat pump. They should be installed at least 2’ upstream or downstream from any air handler., forced air system, filer, humidifier or changes in duct size, or directional change of duct. When flexible duct connector is used to dampen equipment vibrations the duct heater should be installed at least 18” away upstream or downstream. Any and all connections should be installed per local codes and national codes meeting NFPA 90A or NFPA 90B standards.

HEATRIX ELECTRIC DUCT HEATER
HXOB INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS
GENERALHeatrix HXOB style electric duct heater has been tested and listed for close-coupled application with a forced air system (straight cool, heat pump or fan coil). To insure proper operation of the heater, installation instruction must be carefully followed. Failure to do so will result in an unsafe condition and nuisance tripping of the automatic reset and manual backup switches. These instructions cover the installation of the HXOB style electric duct hearer. Heaters will vary from KW, voltage, phase and physical opening (see heater label for information and specific applications).
INSTALLATION PROCEDURESThe Heatrix HXOB style electric duct heater is designed for zero clearance to combustible material. However, we recommend a minimum clearance of one inch be maintained on all sides of the supply duct for three feet. For extra protection where a discharge plenum forms part of the duct work, it too should have a one inch clearance on all sides. Before starting electric heater installation ,be assured that available power supply (voltage, phase and frequency) corresponds to that specified n electric heater rating plate. In addition, check power supply available to make certain that the service capacity is sufficient to handle the load imposed by the equipment.
MOUNTING THE UNITThe Heatrix HXOB style electric duct heater is designed for close-coupled application to the unit for either vertical or horizontal airflow. The control box should be positioned for easy access when servicing. On units where the air handler is located in a closet, heater control box should be accessible from front of the unit. Check heater element section for baffled side of discharge. The baffled side must corresponding to the blanked-off section of unit fan discharge. Incorrect alignment of baffled section of the heater and the fan discharge blanked-off section will cause incorrect operation of unit and heater (see Figure #1 for heater installation). After determining alignment of heater to unit, fasten heater to air handler with at least six (6) #8 sheet metal screws, being careful not to drill any important components in the unit.
The heater cover should open freely for maintenance or service. If electric heater is equipped with circuit fusing, a hinged door for easy access is provided. There is a locking latch that holds the door onto the control box and/or locking disconnect switch handle. For locking latch, use a screwdriver to open door. For disconnect handle, simply turn to “OFF” position. For ease of installation, the door should be locked closed when installing unit package. Connect duct work down over 1” of heater lip or down over heater plenum. Don’t insulate heater control box.
WIRING PROCEDURESA. LINE vOLTAGE WIRING: Adhere to all local building codes, ordinances and/or the National Electric Code pertaining to installation of equipment. Disconnect all power to the unit before servicing. The electric heater has a 7/8” diameter pilot hole for enlarging to proper size opening for line voltage entrance. Run power lines from disconnect through entrance hole to labeled disconnect or line voltage block.Copper wire must be used from the disconnect switch to the unit. Always use a good grade of wire, such as 75-degrees C material for electric heater. See attached diagrams.
B. GROUND: The heater cabinet must have an uninterrupted or unbroken electrical ground to minimize the chance of injury should an electrical fault occur. This may consist of an electrical wire or approved conduit when installed in accordance with existing electrical codes.
C. DISCONNECT SWITCH: A separate branch electrical circuit containing a field supplied disconnect switch mounted at or within sight of the unit must be run from the heater section. (for single line feed of heater, the power wire size for both heater and fan motor must be supplied). See Diagram #3If the disconnect switch is to be mounted on the unit, select a location where the drill or fasteners will not contact electrical or refrigerant components. If the unit was installed before the addition of the electric heat package, it will probably be necessary to bring in a new line voltage power supply because the original power supply may not be sufficient to handle the load.
D. CONTROL vOLTAGE WIRING: In some cases the electric heat package is equipped with a low voltage control transformer. Standard control voltage is 24V (120V-277V is available upon special request). If unit is equipped with a transformer, isolation must be maintained from the external Class II output of ay transformer in the unit equipment. Use a thermostat with isolating contact to prevent interconnecting of Class II output. The heater is equipped with a low voltage control terminal strip. A 7/8” or 1/2” round hole with a bushing is used for the entrance of the control wire. The terminal strip is marked with the proper control connection for the thermostat.
E. THERMOSTAT SETTING: The indoor thermostat heat anticipator setting should agree with the current draw of the heating controls of the control circuit. Some power can be saved by lowering the thermostat setting at night, but it is not recommended to lower it more than 5 or 10 degrees because4 the recovery time is the morning may offset any savings accomplished during the setback period
F. FAN INTERLOCK: Per U.L. and N.E.C., the heater has a fan interlock circuit built into it. The interlocking relay circuit insures that the fan is operating whenever the heater is energized.
G. OPTIONAL AIR PRESSURE SWITCH: Circuit only allows the heater to operate under an air moving condition.

OPERATION - GENERALIn the HXOB style electric duct heaters, the heating elements and primary fan interlock are switched “ON” and “OFF” through the one or more controls that operate through a low voltage thermostat circuit. These controls consist of a number of switches and a low voltage (24V) resistance bimetal heater (sequencer) or contactor. In the case of the sequencer, when the thermostat contactor closes, the control heater is energized and the heat in the bimetal cause it to move, closing the switches in a times sequence. The is a initial time delay while the bimetal is heating. With a contactor, the switch closes immediately. The timed sequence will operate at 30-45 second intervals. On the initial startup of the heater, there will be a 45 second delay of operation. The fan will energize with the first heating element. Fan interlock wire must be used to insure proper operation of the heater. Failure to do so may result in over temperature of the heater element area.
AIR vELOCITYSince electric heaters have constant BTU outputs as long as the heater is energized, minimum airflow through the heater must be maintained in order to: 1) Achieve good heat transfer 2) Prevent overheating and nuisance tripping of the protection devices 3) Maintain life expectancyAir velocity is important for the electric heater to operate efficiently. Loss or impedance of air flow may result in nuisance tripping or short element life. Too high of air flow will result in low air temperature rise. We recommend at least 50 CFM per KW for proper operation of the heater.
HEATER LIMIT SWITCHES AND RELAY COMPONENTSTemperature limit switches are special combination recycling and single operation limit controls. When an over temperature condition exists, the primary SPST device will open the circuit to the heater elements. This will occur without opening the fan circuit, thus facilitating quick cooling of the automatic reset limit. When sufficiently cooled, the heater elements will be re-energized. The heater is also equipped with secondary limits that must be manually reset in the event of an over temperature condition.
SERvICEOnly licensed, qualified installer and service mechanics should install, start up or service this equipment. When working on this heater, observe precautions in the literature, tags or labels that are attached to the heater.Service access to the various components of the HXOB style electric duct heater assembly may be obtained as follows: 1) Disconnect all electrical power to the unit before performing any maintenance or service to the unit. Unit may have more than one disconnect switch. 2) Open hinged cover with screwdriver. 3) All components are available in the control box. 4) Components may be checked and serviced in the control box. Replace defective parts with identical parts only. Check wiring diagrams for proper wiring before turning power back on. 5) Don’t jump out secondary of transformer. This may result in short occurring in the secondary of the transformer. 6) Heater may employ time sequence. Please give unit the proper amount of time for heater to energize and de-energize. 7) INSTALLER MUST TIGHTEN ALL ELECTRICAL CONNECTIONS

STAINLESS STEEL FINNED TUBULAR ELEMENTS
The stainless steel finned tubular elements supplied by Dell Corporation are similar to the standard finned tubular element construction except that a high temp corrosion resistant #304 grade stainless steel is utilized, versus carbon steel.
The heating element construction incorporates a premium grade, helical wound, 80/20 nickel chromium resistance wire imbedded in compacted, high purity, magnesium oxide. The heater sheath consists of a rugged 7/16" diameter #304 stainless steel tube. The heater tube, in combination with internal element construction, provides an optimum of internal electrical spacings and thermal profile features. The outer fin consists of 3/8" wide x 1/32" thick, continuous edge wound #304 stainless steel strip, configured at 4 - 5 fins per linear inch to ensure maximum heat transfer, heat dissipation and uniform heating.
Stainless steel finned tubular elements are rated for high temperatures up to 1200ºF. These elements are to be used where superior corrosion resistance is required eg. high humidity or moist environments. Terminals are stainless steel.
Lead time on heaters with stainless steel finned tubular elements is 4 - 5 weeks after receipt of order, same as carbon steel.

INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS FOR MODULARELECTRIC HEATERS WITH PLENUM ASSEMBLY
WARNINGDanger of bodily injury or death!
Disconnect Electric Power Before Installation.Where there is more than one circuit, be sure
All circuits are turned off!
HEATER INSTALLATION
1. First determine position of electric coil preheat or reheat position
2. Determine location of heating elements in relation to modular unit. There must be at least 24” from the center line of element section to the center line of the filter section.
3. Blower motors must have insulation class listing in excess or 175 degrees Fahrenheit. After determining the above, you’re ready to begin installation.
INSTALLATION OF MODULAR HEATER WITH MODULAR PLENUM
1. Remove electric heater section from plenum. This will make installation easier. Plenum section is shipped without gasket material on leaving-air and entering-air sides. You will find this material inside heater terminal enclosure.
2. Make sure all bare metal on flanges has gaskets to prevent air leaks. Plenum assembly should match up to existing equipment modules. It is the installing contractor’s responsibility to supply any hardware necessary to connect sections (i.e. bolts, nut, sheet metal screws or corner brackets).
3. Once modules are connected, the heater section may be reinstalled into plenum assembly by positioning element area on supplied tracks and sliding into plenum assembly; reattach with screws removed previously.
4. To do this, you must remove sheet metal screws from terminal enclosure that attache control box to plenum assembly.

INSTALLATION OF MODULAR HEATERS BY HEATRIX INTO OEMFACTORY BLANK ACCESS SECTIONS – DRAW THRU OR BLOWTHRU APPLICATIONS INvOLvING CENTRAL STATION AHU’S IN ACCORDANCE WITH SMACNA DUCTED ELECTRIC HEAT GUIDE FOR AIR HANDLING SYSTEMS, SECOND EDITION, SECTION 4.7
SPECIAL LOCATIONS, AS WELL AS NFPA 70,NATIONAL ELECTRIC CODE - SECTION 300.22B.
WARNINGDanger of bodily injury or death!
Disconnect Electric Power Before Installation.Where there is more than one circuit, be sure
All circuits are turned off!
The factory blank access section will be ordered with a flat panel on the side that the heater is to be installed through, with an access door on the opposite side for service, if desired.
Tracks and fixtures to support the heater within the access section, are to be supplied by the installer. The alignment of the heating coils are to be that the full face be in the airstream.
There must be at least 24” from the center line of element section to the center line of the filter section.
The installer will cut a slot into the flat panel side to assure proper alignment as the heater is installed into the blank access section. Gasket and sealant material supplied by the installer is to be used to seal the cut edge of the slot and the mounting surface of the control panel of the heater.
Heatrix Heaters have a required minimum feet per minute on the data label. This requirement must be met so that the heater will operate properly.
All heaters have a wiring diagram. All power & control wire specifications are per N.E.C. All heaters are to be interlocked with the blower via air switch or relay.
INSTALLATION INSTRUCTION FOR INSTALLING MODULARELECTRIC HEATERS TOTALLY INSIDE FACTORY OEM
ELECTRIC OR BLANK ACCESS SECTIONSIN ACCORDANCE WITH NFPA 70,
NATIONAL ELECTRIC CODE – SECTION 300.22B.
This type of modular electric heater has been designed to fit entirely into the factory OEM electric or Blank Access Section.
This type modular electric heater is to be a minimum of 24” from a filter section. The installation of the heater should be done by a qualified sheet metal contractor, who would supply the sheet metal tracks and support fastening fixtures. To insure proper airflow through the heater, the heater should be in alignment with all other components in the air handling system where airflow is also a consideration.
ALL HEATERS ARE LABELED ON THE HINGED COVER WITH THE MIN. FPMAn air balance contractor should verify the proper FPM on start up. Full face of the heating coil should be entirely covered . Most heaters are set up for negative pressure. The pitot tube in the airstream is tubed to the low pressure port of the air switch. This pitot tube is factory positioned so that the airflow will hit the back of the neck of the pitot tube in the airstream. A secondary pitot tube assembly is supplied with the heater, to be field connected to the high pressure port on the air switch and the attached pitot tube to be field installed in a manner so as to sense atmospheric pressure outside the heater section. This will enable the air switch to sense differential pressure so as the switch will make and interlock the heater with the fan.
Field wire the supply & control circuits in accordance with NEC and local codes. Each electric heater has a wiring diagram affixed the inside of the hinged cover. The electrical data is to be found on the outside of the hinged cover of the heater. Blower motors should have an insulation class listing in excess of 175 degrees F.

INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS BOTTOM/TOP MOUNT INSTALLATION M1, MF, MH1, MHF1, OMH1, DAS, DFS
ELECTRIC DUCT HEATERS
THE ABOVE DUCT HEATERS MAY BE USED WITH HEAT PUMPS, COOLING UNITS OR WITH ANY FORCED AIR SYSTEM. THEY HAVE BEEN TESTED IN ACCORDANCE WITH U.L. 1996 AND THE NATIONAL ELECTRIC CODE FOR ZERO CLEARANCE INSTALLATIONS
INSTALLATIONSFor best performance, all models except the DAS Series (2 Ft) should be mounted a minimum of 4 feet downstream or upstream from the air moving device. Follow all SMACNA guidelines for installations. All eaters carry an air flow direction label that must be followed. Heaters are labeled in accordance with mounting configuration. If mercury contactors are present, heater will carry a label mount with this side up.
FOR M1, MF, OH1, OMH1, DAS, ODS, DASR, ODASR, DFR SERIESThese models are slip in type heaters which requires cutting a slot to allow for the heating element section to slide into the duct work. Make sure to use an approved duct sealant to create an air tight seal between the control box an duct work. On OM Series you must use an approved outdoor sealant to prevent water seepage between the control box and the duct work.
MR1, MHF1, DAF, DAFR, DFF SERIESThese models are flange mount heaters. The heaters carry a turned out flange which actually becomes part of the duct work. Flanges do not need to be exactly the same size as the existing duct flanges. Measure the airway length of the heater to determine the portion of the duct to be replaced. The heater will be attached to 3 sides of the duct by the flanges. The portion of the duct where the control box is located should be attached directly to the control panel. A flange is not required here.
REMOTE PANEL MODELRemotes are used when access or size constraint is a problem. Remote panels house all of the operations components of the electric heater. The terminal enclosure houses all of the element terminals, air pressure switch and all primary and secondary overloads. Remote panels should not be attached to duct work. When a NEMA remote panel is used it must be installed indoors, only a NEMA 4 rated remote panel can be installed outdoors.
INSULATED DUCTHeater must be designed specifically for internally insulated duct work.
ACCESS FOR MANUAL SWITCHESIt is recommended that the installer cut an access opening in the duct work that coincides with the access plate on the bottom mount heater. This will ensure accessibility to the limits for resetting without removing the heater from the duct work.
KNOCK OUTSIt is the responsibility of the electrician to install the knock out for field supplied conductors. Knock out size must be determined by the table 14.1/14.2 on the National Electric Code. Knock out placement is marked by the manufacturer. Field wire the supply and control circuits in accordance with local and national codes. All heaters carry a wire diagram attached to the inside cover.
INSTALLER RESPONSIBILITYIt is the responsibility of the installer to make sure all electrical connections in the control panel are tight. Do not insulate or enclose the control panel. All heaters are intended for use in duct work only. Duct work should be constructed in accordance with the National Fire Protection Association. NFPA #90A/NFPA #90B and the SMACNA ducted electric heat guide.

INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS FOR NEMA 4/12/13 TYPE ENCLOSURES
These duct heaters are suitable for outdoor installations in vertical or horizontal duct systems. They may be used with heat pumps, cooling units or any forced air system and are suitable for zero clearance installations.
MODEL NUMBERS
OMH1 - Outdoor manual heater, slip-in, requiring MR Series Remote Panel.OMHF1 - Outdoor manual heater, flange mount, requiring MR Series Remote Panel.OM1 - Outdoor slip-in type, no remote panel required.OMF1 - Outdoor flange mount type, no remote panel required.
INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONSFor best performance, the duct heater should be installed 4’ downstream or upstream of the air-moving equipment.
Install the slip-in type heater by cutting correct size opening in duct work. Insert heater and fasten accordingly. On an extremely long heater, a support foot may be needed at opposite end of control panel to support weight of heating elements.
For installation of flange-mount heaters, the heater will have a turned-out flange which should match up to flanges of existing duct work. In this application, the heater actually becomes part of the duct work.
Although the control panel is for outdoor use, this will not prevent water seepage at installation point in the duct system. IT IS THE INSTALLER’S RESPONSIBILITY TO INSURE A WATERPROOF SEAL OF ALL SEAMS IN FLANGE-MOUNT SYSTEMS AND BETWEEN PANEL AND DUCT IN SLIP-IN MODELS. TO ACCOMPLISH THIS, INSTALLER MUST USE AN APPROvED OUTDOOR SEALANT.
Air flow and patterns of air flow are very important for the heater to work correctly. This is to insure the life of the heating elements, and to prevent nuisance tripping. Heatrix Heaters carry a label showing minimum air flow that can be used to operate heaters correctly by showing entering air at two different temperatures. These minimum air velocities or C.F.M. must be in a pattern that covers the entire surface of the heater.
Field wire the supply and control circuit in accordance with national and local electrical codes for outdoor power supplies. Each heater carries a wiring diagram designed for that particular heater, showing the manner in which each duct heater must be connected externally to be properly interlocked with the blower motor, if the blower motor control is not actually a part of the duct heater assembly, unless the duct heater is provided with an integral air pressure switch. INSTALLER MUST TIGHTEN ALL ELECTRICAL CONNECTION IN CONTROL PANEL.
The air duct should be installed in accordance with standards of the National Fire Protection Association for the installation of air conditioning and ventilating systems of other than residence type; NFPA #90A, and residence-type warm air heating and air condition systems, NFPA #90B.
